JJ Burnel my ultimate musical hero, closely followed by Chris Squire. If only more musicians could understand that the bass isn't just there to set a rhythm but is a characterful musical instrument in its own right. With both JJ and Squire the tune is driven by the bass guitar rather than it being some sort of metronomic accompaniment as it so often is.
I should mention Glenn Hughes here too - he's definitely my No.3, sharing that position with you, Danny, of course. Thank you for this beautifully played JJ tribute. mate - it's made me smile.

The bass and drums are the sponge, the guitar and keyboards are the cream and icing sugar. One is no good without the other!

John Entwistle of the Who was one of the greatest exponents of playing "lead guitar" with a bass.

    • @NigelThompson-hb5jg

McCartney turned the bass into a true musical instrument - most of his melodies on it are better than many lead guitarists.

Almost as much a celebration of the late, great Dave Greenfield - JJ's bass and Dave's keyboards ARE The Stranglers. Bass and keyboards are all that's needed to create that utterly distinctive sound

Love the fact that you're grinning your head off throughout the video. Your bass guitar & keyboard playing are excellent 👌... seriously if you ever need an old school Stranglers / Damned/ Velvet Underground Doorsy style singer for recording? I'm your man. Another Stranglers video please?..... failing that one on Paul Gray of the Damned? Keep rocking 😎

I was Lucky enough to meet JJ in September 93 in Dartmoor prison when we won this music competition and got a 10k sound system from Bose as a prize. Jj and the new lead singer came up and did a gig to which we played support, still have the VHS tape. First time they played Sugar bullets live. JJ played my bass 😁😁😁

I think Danny has raised the bar on these play a long vids and I might do one like this soon. Luckily the song I picked is not in his repertoire. "Nice and Sleazy" is a real pain in the ass to nail. Was gonna wimp out with "No More Heroes" instead as it is a lot easier to play even with that crazy intro.

Too right, I hear quite a few guys on bass who are technically brilliant who can play really fast with all that tapping stuff going on......
But give me a simple punchy sounding bass line to a good song anyday.

Bass was always my favorite instrument, first hearing Entwhistle in HS and Chris Squire, but it wasn't until I heard the Stanglers at about 18 that I had to learn it myself. Burnel had such a powerful crunchy attack and the band themselves were and still my remain one of my all time favorites almost forty years later. Great video, solid playing.

Thanks for giving this criminally underrated band some exposure.
I happened to meet the band during a holiday stay with a Brighton couple in '83 as a payin' guest. I was in my early teens and had merely just discovered the variety of punk. Never had heard of them before and was blown away by their music as much as their personalities. Been a fan ever since but their early phase creativity and energy will remain unsurpassed 4ever.
PS: As a guitarist I do some occasional bass for recordings and I think soundwise I always end up with some kind of weird mashup of JJ Burnel and Lemmy. :-D
