STRANGLERS | JJ BURNELL | PUNK | P BASS | PRECISION BASS
The Stranglers sound built around a lead bass and organ, perfection !
Tank! Finally someone plays it like it should be played. Hard, pick, hammer it!
Agree totally
...and also kick the front of your cab in for authenticity! 🤟😂
Jjs tone is unique but hitting too hard you get a death rattle jjs just hits hard enough including his tone .
How talented is this guy. Brilliant
The stranglers will always be my favourite band. Amazing music.
JJ Burnel has one of the most iconic punk bass tones in my opinion, it’s so biting it’s absolutely awesome. Great job, man
His tone is insane, I love ‘Nice and Sleazy!!!’
For me, JJ Burnel perpetrates THE greatest bass sound of any kind, anywhere. It's just catalysmic.
JJ Burnel my ultimate musical hero, closely followed by Chris Squire. If only more musicians could understand that the bass isn't just there to set a rhythm but is a characterful musical instrument in its own right. With both JJ and Squire the tune is driven by the bass guitar rather than it being some sort of metronomic accompaniment as it so often is.
I should mention Glenn Hughes here too - he's definitely my No.3, sharing that position with you, Danny, of course. Thank you for this beautifully played JJ tribute. mate - it's made me smile.
The bass and drums are the sponge, the guitar and keyboards are the cream and icing sugar. One is no good without the other!
John Entwistle of the Who was one of the greatest exponents of playing "lead guitar" with a bass.
McCartney turned the bass into a true musical instrument - most of his melodies on it are better than many lead guitarists.
Almost as much a celebration of the late, great Dave Greenfield - JJ's bass and Dave's keyboards ARE The Stranglers. Bass and keyboards are all that's needed to create that utterly distinctive sound
Stranglers have been on my playlist since 77. Awesome Stuff.
same here....
Absolutely
When you were a glint in your dad's eye... I was watching the strangers live. Your posting is absolutely.brilliant. As another poster says "you nailed it !"
i went twice when they were on raven tour, hammersmith and i think Camden was the other venue
Thank you so much. Made my day! ❤ Stranglers forever! Greatest songs. Sweet est memories.
Yes!!! J. J. Burnell is one of the greatest behs players ever! I’m loving your channel Danny!❤
Fucking excellent. The Stranglers are my favourite band, and the reason why l took up bass- you NAILED it. Solid.
Thanks for posting.
Love the fact that you're grinning your head off throughout the video. Your bass guitar & keyboard playing are excellent 👌... seriously if you ever need an old school Stranglers / Damned/ Velvet Underground Doorsy style singer for recording? I'm your man. Another Stranglers video please?..... failing that one on Paul Gray of the Damned? Keep rocking 😎
I was Lucky enough to meet JJ in September 93 in Dartmoor prison when we won this music competition and got a 10k sound system from Bose as a prize. Jj and the new lead singer came up and did a gig to which we played support, still have the VHS tape. First time they played Sugar bullets live. JJ played my bass 😁😁😁
@@nigelpearce703 Nice one. That story trumps the times I've met him.
I think Danny has raised the bar on these play a long vids and I might do one like this soon. Luckily the song I picked is not in his repertoire. "Nice and Sleazy" is a real pain in the ass to nail. Was gonna wimp out with "No More Heroes" instead as it is a lot easier to play even with that crazy intro.
Great great great comment,mine too......
Such great basslines. People are so wrapped up in technical ability these days that they forget about the creative side of writing a great (quite often fairly simple) bassline.
Too right, I hear quite a few guys on bass who are technically brilliant who can play really fast with all that tapping stuff going on......
But give me a simple punchy sounding bass line to a good song anyday.
Absolutely outstanding. I could have sworn it was the legend himself playing.
Excellent showcase on the unique brilliance of JJ. Saw those badboys back in 78, still buzzin😎🎶
JJ Burnell's bass lines were the hook for me back in the day... of course the greatness of the Stranglers was much more than that but it was the bass line that drew me in.
Me too! First heard Peaches on Radio Luxembourg and I was hooked back in ‘77
All the punk attitude but critically the Stranglers had so much more. Great musicians and song writers. One of the greatest bass tones married superbly to the superb rippling arpeggios of Dave's keyboards.
correct👌
Brilliant job. I would have loved to see the bass run at the end of Straighten Out just to see how he played it. Another fav was the bass solo at the end of genetics or the Raven bass line. Don't get me started. What a band they were live.
Excellent ! The bass sound is spot on. You even look like young JJ Burnel !
There’s no rock’n’roll without danger and he always delivered
totally brilliant, could listen all day
Brilliant had it with me breakfast !!!
Amazing. Just bloody amazing.
Great to see you enjoying playing The Stranglers music as much as I enjoy listening - absolutely brilliant 😁👏👌🖤
JJ. Burnell had a strong style and gave it some . Very good !! Xxx
Brilliant stuff mate. This is what got me into The Stranglers......Burnels amazing basslines and Daves stunning hammond, keyboards. R.I.P DAVE😇.....Great work fella👍🍺
Go Buddy Go 👍, bloody good .The Great Elmyr has some serious competition.
I don't normally like these type of cover videos, but this one is well played Sir. Thumbs up.
fantastic treat ! cheers !
massive respect to John's basslines
probably the most underrated band in the UK music history
That was awesome . I've been listening to The Stranglers for 44 yrs now - LOVE JJ:s bass , clearly you do too . And that start of No More Heroes - brilliant ! Thanks .
You are so good,lad.. i first saw the Stranglers in 1978 in Hamburg and they are still the greatest for me...thank you so much for your Chanel..
I love the fact that he is so happy for playing JJs basslines welldone!!!!!
Outstanding tribute! JJB and the Stranglers are always deserving of more recognition. (You left out Nice N Sleazy tho..;) )
Fr the best bassline of them all in my opinion
That was the first song I hear when I went to my first club and I went crazy flipping on my back i was just a kid, in heaven back then, Sleazy drove me insane as I never heard anything like that before.
It is one of the greatest bass lines ever written
Strangles..... So much more then what the radio plays of them. (Golden Brown/ There's always the sun)
Beautiful thing that a great young talent appreciates this iconic band, well done you are great, and thanks (:
The bit during Grip where you look at your invisible watch cracks me up every time 😂😂
Excellent , love jj bass lines , also Dave Greenfields keyboards were great too
The "4 hats on the coatstand" is a nice touch :)
Ha absolutely brilliant, can't believe the base start to no more heroes...keep it coming lad, more please!!!!
JJ is the best.I love how you have chosen the keyboard to play along with the baselines as that seems to be the dynamic with those Stranglers songs the bass really playing hard in unison with the keys..seems to be the key to most of their best songs.
Excellent musicianship. 👍
The Stranglers' sound was so bassful. ❤
I to jest właśnie muzyka: rytm + melodia. Dziękuję Ci bardzo.
love this mate..first saw the stranglers in 1980 at the Glasgow Apollo then again in 81 same venue then numerous places after, my fav band of all time..
Brilliant! Thanks mate. Stranglers were, and still are fantastic. Top man.
I love Tank. Great JJ, great Dave. Loved Hugh too
One of the main reasons I started playing bass. Good video!
Wow! This is brilliant. Exactly like the originals.
Bloody Brilliant you are a one man Stranglers tribute act..you Nailed it
Can't stop playing this brilliant
Amazing, very talented. Loved the Stranglers. Fantastic band. Particularly J J Burnel, he's gorgeous. Wish he was my man
Excellent kick ass clip. You nailed all the song from my favourite album..plus No More Heros. I enjoyed every second😎👍.
Bass was always my favorite instrument, first hearing Entwhistle in HS and Chris Squire, but it wasn't until I heard the Stanglers at about 18 that I had to learn it myself. Burnel had such a powerful crunchy attack and the band themselves were and still my remain one of my all time favorites almost forty years later. Great video, solid playing.
That bass tone is spot on - nice work.
Dude!!! YOU KILLED IT!!!! Awesome!!!! Stanglers fanatic here since the 70s.
Simply the best bassist to ever grace music.
Seriously, seriously good stuff. As another commenter said, you've nailed JJ's tone.
Jj burnell world's greatest bass player
If only I could play like that!
JJ literally the coolest bloke to pick up a bass
I first saw the Stranglers in 1978, Finsbury Park Rainbow, London. Nice job here showing us how complex much of it was from the bass-lines through DaveG's soaring riffs.
bass beer naked girls and a punch up describes JJ
his bass tone and style got me into bass back when I was a kid in the 90's
Great bass and keyboards!
Excellent! Just excellent.
Thanks for giving this criminally underrated band some exposure.
I happened to meet the band during a holiday stay with a Brighton couple in '83 as a payin' guest. I was in my early teens and had merely just discovered the variety of punk. Never had heard of them before and was blown away by their music as much as their personalities. Been a fan ever since but their early phase creativity and energy will remain unsurpassed 4ever.
PS: As a guitarist I do some occasional bass for recordings and I think soundwise I always end up with some kind of weird mashup of JJ Burnel and Lemmy. :-D
I both admire your level of talent and loathe your level of talent in equal measure! 😂 Absolutely stunning job....on all 3 instruments. And believe me, I grew up on all of these tracks and lucky enough to hear and meet the Stranglers on quite a few occasions. Really wonderful tribute to them, man. Thank you so much for sharing and the work you put into each track. It's as faithful as you'll find anywhere. 👍
I like the Andy Partridge look more than the later grebo aesthetic. I didn't even know you were the same guy!
Awesome stuff! Nailed the bass and the Dave Greenfield keys was amazing too!
Wow, how did you get that JJ distorted bass sound? I know JJ's bass amp speaker had a tear in it creating that distinctive distortion. Great versions, you really captured their sound and can play guitar, bass and keyboards - very impressive
so amazing this band and the black and white album blew me away when i was 12 or 13. bass player is a hard fecker lol love
My first taste of the Stranglers was a c90 cassette with the No More Heroes album and most of Ian Dury- New Boots and Panties filling up the bit of spare tape at the end… happy days 😁 awesome stuff mate.
How the hell is Everybody loves you when you're dead not on here. Best bass line I've heard by them
I have loved the Stranglers music since I first heard them in the 70's and always wanted to hear the first 3 albums without the vocals just to appreciate the music.
Thanks for doing this
So pleased you included Hanging Around’! Filthy, SEXY base tone….!!
Brilliant-used to be an avid stranglers fan, back in the day !!
Brilliant, nicely done, some classic Stranglers riffs back-to-back the soundtrack to my youth, thoroughly enjoyed that.
The music of my childhood. Fu**ing fantastic! Superb bass lines. Saw the Stranglers in Battersea Park back in the late 70's
Me, too. Still got the badge 😜
This is a great tribute. JJ was the reason I played bass, the reason I rode a motorcycle, and the reason that punk never dies 😎
I’ve been listening to the “Black and White” album since my teens. Absolutely LOVE IT. Oddly, never checked out other Stranglers albums because I’m afraid they’d only disappoint me, I love B&W so much.
Like a breath of fresh air! Takes me back to the seventies.
Brilliant. Nailed it 100%. JJ is a Bass god.
You nailed it. Excellent.
Luv the dave reference to casually doing something else through a tricky solo eg looking at watch ordrinking beer
That was BRILLIANT.
So good to see Tank in the list. More please :)
Great tone and awesome playing.
That was like a little karaoke! That was excellent!
I can remember my mum taking me to petticoat lane back in 1977 and I was just hoping to pick up any stranglers 45 on 7 inch . Yes I got Hanging Around and later all of the 45s from a shop in Stratford a HMV shop
One of the best clips on youtube!
Eventually I got round to listening to this and what a pleasure it was. Amazing sound. I’d like to hear much more!
Sounding good dude. Love peaches.
The man in black.... Excellent!
Dang Man the best thing I've seen and heard on RUclips in years.
String companies should have used JJ Burnel to test the ruggedness of their products.
JJ: a giant of a man in so many ways
I can’t stop watching this, haha!
I've always loved la folie
That was fantastic! Took me down memory lane. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Good job! I've been a stranglers fan since the beginning, and you captured the "feel" but missed the magic of Dave's keys.
That is just amazing. You've even somehow managed to capture his early sound which was a burst speaker. The other instruments are also spot on too. I'm a massive Stranglers fan and also a vocalist is there anyway i could hear the full songs? I'd love to put a vocal onto them.
Danny, that was awesome. Nailed it and looked good doing it
Well done...you must have spent some time on this and its really good.
what an amazing sound!!
Fkn brought a tear to my eye mate .. all those songs I could never play cos I’m nowhere near as good as JJ and now I can slow down your vid and have a go myself . Merci mon ami , you cool as Fk btw and you def can play them instruments AND look like your just having the best time , 👍🏴
