  • This is my tribute to Dave Greenfield, keyboard player of the band The Stranglers. He was a major influence on me, and I use this video to explore his distinctive playing style and the keyboard sounds he used. RIP Dave.
(Apologies for the inconstant quality sound, my mic was playing up so I did my best to boost the volume when I'm talking)

A Lovely Soul That was Dave. I spent a night in his company with his Wife Pam drinking pints with him after a Gig in 89. Such a generous lovely Soul that went out of his way to give me personal momentos that he had in his Bag that night including the sheet of keyboard sounds that he was using in his Keyboard for the gig that night.
That was a very very special memory that I'll always hold dear to me.
    R.I.P Dave

This band firmly shaped my DNA - The lose of Dave is like loosing a member of my family. my fondest memory of Dave was when I was invited to an after show party. I was at the bar with Dave, his wife and his oldest friend who was his best man at his wedding. Dave was a truly lovely nature individual, he kept his taxi waiting for over an hour to spend time with us and have a drink.

I suppose anyone in the 50-70 age group will pity the young people today who never had the privilege to have genius like this around to inspire them. As someone who is rediscovering a lot of 70-80’s music (well there was so much good stuff and we were all a little bit partisan) listening to the Stranglers back catalogue sends shivers down my spine. Golden Brown in particular is a proper work of art that deserves much more recognition than it got at the time (and it got a lot don't get me wrong).
Thank you for such a fantastic tribute to Dave Greenfield, it's a pity it wasn't an hour long!

I first saw the Stranglers at the Brighton Centre in 1978 at the tender age of 14 and was hooked from then on. I’d already bought No More Heroes and then their first album Rattus and was mesmerised by Dave’s swirling sounds and melodies. Black and White is also a classic. I was so upset when Hugh left but such is life. Dave however was a master of his trade, a true genius and will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace you true hero.

Lovely tribute to a wonderful musician and personal hero of mine(and thousands others) . Your rendition of Golden Brown took me straight back to the early '80s when I learned to play it on a Spinnet in a friend's music room. There was also a pipe organ where my friend and I could play Waltzinblack , well as far as you could with two pairs and hands and feet !! Dave's keyboard parts were the trickiest to play of all the band's individual parts but by far the most complete, melodic and satisfying to recreate. Nearly all my favourite Stranglers "bits" are Dave's , his cembalet work on the second part of the intro to Toiler , the No More Heroes solo , the Walk on By solo and my all time favourite which is his Hammond work throughout Down in the Sewer . The triplets and arpeggios in his solo are beautifully crafted and really remind me of JS Bach .
I really apreciate the time you spent constructing your tribute and it's always great to hear about Dave Greenfield . He was the best

@@aidanbrennan6587 Agreed Aiden, Down in the Sewer is an absolute masterpiece, I got to say I was gob-smacked to see a Stranglers tribute band at Birdwell WM Club in Barnsley, no less, last month and they nailed every song they did D. I. T, S as an encore , I thought the chances of any keyboard player replicating the great man and their songs was zero but great to see their music lives on

Big Stranglers fan here. My older brother introduced them to me by playing their first album repeatedly. I hated them at first because of the aggressive vocals but got hooked after the umpteenth playing. Largely because of the melodic keyboards, courtesy of the amazing Dave Greenfield.
I saw them live in the late 70’s, early 80’s and mid-80’s. My favourite concert was Sheffield around the late 70s. My brother and I rushed the stage when the lights went down and spent the whole concert front and center crushed against the stage. Fantastic gig.
If there’s a worthy replacement for Dave, it’s Toby. You must be a lifelong fan and well skilled keyboard player to match Dave’s fast arpeggio techniques. Typically these things are replicated in MIDI in the studio but take a next level of skill to perform live.

  • @stationers
    @stationers 4 года назад +11

Great tribute. Whilst Dave didn't take full on writing duties he was the Great Embellisher of the Stranglers music. There is stuff of real beauty hidden in every Stranglers song - even on the most aggressive of their early music- Grip, to me, is a beautiful song massively underrated and shows the beauty of Dave's keyboard playing - I am amazed it never gets more airplay as it is a wonderful song. I remember Hugh Cornwell at a live 'in conversation with' talking about 'Souls' from the Aural Sculpture album and saying it was Dave who came up with the distinctive keyboard embellishment that really lifted the song to something else. Anyway as I say, a wonderful tribute.

Great tribute. Agreed, people forget the dimension Dave brought to synthesizers in that era - everyone had a Minimoog but not many people used it like him - think of the solos on Tank, Shut Up and Nice 'n' Sleazy.
He did the same with the Oberheims and Wasps later on...Dave was obviously a Progger but within the confines of The Stranglers, he was never excessive.

No band is so good that a keyboard rig wouldn't improve it. Nice to hear Dave was a Wakeman fan. Wakeman's "White Rock soundtrack" was one of my favourite albums in addition to the many Stranglers albums I bought on vinyl since the 70s. Briefly met Dave and the rest of the band in Scotland a few times. Hugh and Jet offered my mate and me a lift from Dunfermline to Edinburgh because we were a couple of schoolkids who missed the last train after the gig. But unfortunately Dave kicked us back out the vehicle! Didn't hold it against him though. If memory serves, it was the Skids supporting them.

Love you Dave. So many incredible moments of playing in their songs. One of my favourites is the lead back into the last verse on Sweden, it always seems like he's not going to fit all the notes in!

Wow....fantastic video. Shows exactly why the Stranglers were much better than what some people gave them credit for.

I remember seeing The Hype live at the Cricketers pub in Westfield back in the mid eighties; it was a great to hear No More Heroes played in a tiny venue. Well done Toby for getting this gig with my favourite band of all time.

Thank you! That was a great music pub. I remember the Hype were described by a journalist as ‘a poor man’s Doors’ though ‘a poor man’s Stranglers’ would have been more accurate!

A wonderful tribute and great insight into Dave's playing. I was hooked by the Stranglers aged 13 with their release of Straighten Out/Something Better Change and have been a huge fan ever since. Have seen them live many times......every year in Brighton or Brixton in more recent years and enjoyed every era. Still can't believe Dave is no longer with us. It was an incredible and emotional show at Brighton last week..... didn't think anyone could step into Dave's shoes but you are the perfect fit! (shame about your in ear problems but that didn't stop you)!! I hope the journey continues..........

Loved your 'Don't Bring Harry.' Such an underrated song and way too clever for mainstream. Incidentally, there's another rough demo of it on youtube with Hugh singing and Dave on electric keys. I would loved to have heard a finished version of that too. It would have been equally as good but less dreamy and more menacing.

Thank you for your tribute to Dave Greenfield. Your playing so magically like Dave's, its quite emotional to hear those parts in isolation especially having been a fan since the mid 70s. Especially loved the examples you played Tank, Duchess and Strange Little Girl and the absolutely equally wonderful Don't Bring Harry. Someone commented about playing Waltzinblack and that one I always felt had a feel of the fairground yet in mood that escalated in eerie the meninblack cackling joining the track...pure genius.

They were a punk band, but with a very melodic keyboard player!

Sam Kerridge They weren’t really a Punk band at all but the Punks liked them for a while mainly because of Cornwell and Burnell’s attitude and lyrics. The band were far too musical to be a ‘punk band’. I was 16 when their first album was released and really into the Who, the Doors and a lot of Prog rock bands. The Stranglers were the most exciting band of 1977 and are still one of favourite bands.Dave Greenfield, as Hugh Cornwell said was ‘the difference’.May he rest in peace.

Nice work. I differ - The Stranglers were a punk band all day long! In 77 Norvegicus swept all aside - and every young Kiwi shouted "This IS punk rock....yay!" THANK YOU Barry Jenkin.
