I'm one year ...and a bit ....older ( 57 going 58 ) . Feels like my life has always had The Stranglers to accompany . Not any more though I feel . Now , it will be all back catalogue and nothing new , unless JJ does carry on with the stuff they had written recently . It would be for the memory of Dave IMO . so sudden , so unexpected ....so ........ SHITTY . I'm gutted , a huge chunk of my life is gone , but more importantly gutted for Dave family and friends , that's far more important .
Yeah, I know how you feel mate. Massively important to me both as a kid in the 70s and 80s (particularly 78 to 83) but now also. I ran out of steam with The Stranglers after "Aural Sculpture" and have never been impressed by Cornwell's solo years (not inclusive of the amazing "Nosferatu" of course). Nor have I bothered with the band themselves after Cornwell left (although, I've got to say, I've seen quite a bit of them live on RUclips over the past decade or so and they didn't sound half bad). Irrespective of all that, they will always have a place in my heart for the work they produced in the first 8 or 9 years of their existence. To my mind, once their 1977 Punk Rock stage was behind them (which was always great of course), they were one of the first and best Post Punk bands. That run of singles (inclusive of B-Sides) and albums between "Black And White" and "(The Gospel According To) The MenInBlack" (inclusive of Burnel's and Cornwell's solo work in that era) is absolutely superlative. R.I.P.
I was 7 years old when my brother SWOB came in with there rat album.Thats what I called it and still do.My dad let him play it on the big stereo and I was hooked. So sad .
Well done Ben, Dave Greenfield was brilliant. The Stranglers were the outsider's band. The were even anti-establishment to the anti-establishment. Notable tracks for me, back in the those days: 'Go Buddy Go', 'Grip', 'English Towns' and the epic 'Down in the Sewer'
I have said from day one that down in the sewer is a absolute classic.listen carefully and all 4 of them are at the top of their game.how this song was not brought out as a single is a tragedy.RIP Dave.💔
you summed them up perfectly there. thats why i always liked them, because I was a genuine outsider and didnt fit into any trendy scene or into the general populace lol
It feels like I have lost a family member, a best friend. Have followed and watched the Stranglers for over 40 years. They are part of my DNA. Dave was just a true keyboard legend. No one could touch him. I am so shocked and saddened that I will never see this genius play again. Rest in peace Dave. Condolences to Pam and the rest of band.
Dave’s passing is an almighty loss. So glad there are people like you keeping these amazing songs alive - Thank you for a wonderful tribute to an awesome talent.
Well done Benjamin Bloom.a nice tribute to the late and great Dave Greenfield.and a cracking tune to end with strange little girl one of my all time favourites.he will be sadly missed by all strangler's fans.thanks for posting this this tribute Mr.Bloom.goodbye genius Dave. Will never be forgotten.R.I.P. 💕
I first saw the stranglers live on the raven tour , and I thought they were the greatest live band I'd ever seen, I met Dave on 2 occasions, both in Birmingham with the rest of the band , I've seen the stranglers live nearly every year since 1979 right up to last year 2019 and they were still the best live band I'd ever seen. Dave Greenfield for me was the greatest keyboards player I'd ever heard. A very sad day .
Great tribute Ben👍The Stranglers have always been my favourite band. As a 14yr old kid in 1984 I remember listening to 'hanging around' on an old cassette lying around my house. From then on I spent most of my pocket money on their entire LP back catalogue. And when Cd's came out in the early 80's I stole all the inlay cards from a well known high st chain....just for the lyrics😂😂 Dave Greenfield's announced death yesterday on 5live stunned me to silence. His unique playing style on the old hammond is what sucked me into the band...and I can't believe I won't see him again at a gig, swigging the beer down whilst playing his amazing solos. Cheers Ben...and R.I.P DAVE GREENFIELD🍺🍺
Well said and nice words Mick.I still can't believe he's gone.I feel like I have lost a close friend.I only met him once after a stranglers gig he was a gentleman.he will be sadly missed.RIP genius Dave.💔
Nice tribute Benjamin I last saw the stranglers supporting Alice cooper in October in Cardiff they had put on an amazing show at the packed motorpoint arena, but they all came on stage for Alice's encore schools out and I can still remember Dave up on stage enjoying the moment and hugging mr nice guy Alice cooper. A great memory of a very unique musician. R.I.P David Greenfield.
Lovely tribute to a great musician. Have followed The Stranglers from my late teens and seen them many times. Great memories. Their concerts are the best I have ever been to... brilliant live. RIP Dave.
Regardless of fame, this is the closest I can feel to losing a member of my family, just an amazing musician. I only have one signature on any of my collection and it's Dave's, only one I had managed to bump into in Livingston. The Stranglers were my youth and thru them I was encouraged to broaden my field into many other genres and not least was classical, Dave was responsible for that. JJ is responsible for my love of bass and my love of bass in other music.
I thought it was strange last night, feeling the way I did about the loss of Dave Greenfield, but it's comforting to see I'm not the only one affected in such a strong way by his loss. End of an era.
Well said mate.I feel the same way as you.I still can't believe he is gone.it's like a bad dream.I met him and his wife Pam after a stranglers gig in the mid.80's and he was an absolute gentleman. we have lost a true legend in the music business.RIP genius Dave.
Well said, I was 14 when I purchase the Raven album, the bass and keyboards complement each other so well, and to this day I still play the album, and certainly it encourage me to explore more
Stunning. I think he’d have been moved to tears. Well done buddy that was beautiful. Their finest song. What was so lovely about the man , he was so low key. And played like a god. Thanks for posting.
I’m absolutely gutted by the news of what I would consider the greatest keyboardist ever, thank you for this amazing tribute to a amazing man, r,I,p Dave fly straight with perfection.
Benjamin thanks for that! Met him at a gig once as a giddy fan! He was just lovely and down to earth! I'm getting really pissed off with losing all these good people..ahh what can I say!
I agree Paul, this band kept me sane during my childhood at school. I look back with cherished memories at a band that is part of my life. God bless Dave.
Thanks for a nice tribute, a massive part of my teenage years. Not really followed the Meninblack since the mid 90's. But still, feel like I have lost a close relation. RIP Dave
Dave was the best keyboard player ever.Nobody could play fast melodic arpeggios like he did and make the them look effortless...while swigging a bottle of beer live on stage and not even looking at the keyboards.Sadly missed.
Hi Ben, greetings from Killarney, Ireland. Thanks for introducing me to the participation of Dave in The Stranglers set-up. I am a "Greatest Hits, The Stranglers" fan...., "No more Hero's"...and all the well known songs. At least, now that I have listened to your tribute, I will have a better understanding of the full concept of what makes great music, and Dave's contribution in making it so. Thanks Ben, and R.I.P. Dave.
I envy your talent Ben, nice tribute to a great keyboard player. I've followed the Stranglers since 1979 when I was 18, and wish I'd got into them earlier. The whole band are very talented, just listen to JJ's bass riffs, especially Genetix (see AL G on RUclips). RIP Dave.
Wow what's a lovely tribute to Dave Greenfield. That's also one of my favourite songs from The Stranglers. Dave was Such a brilliant keyboard player how is Master to play all of the keyboards at once and in sequence absolutely brilliant. Really loved your tribute and to say that you performed that song perfectly. You also have a great singing voice too. RIP Dave Greenfield you will be sadly missed by all. 💕😞
Nice tribute, thanks for uploading this... Yeah, he was the leading sonic force of The Stranglers, have all their albums during 1977-86, plus the epic live album released in 1988. R.I.P. Dave!!!
For me the end part of Down in the Sewer was an amazing piece of keyboard playing by Dave Greenfield . And when it came to singing Dave Greenfield had that unique voice that made you sit up and listen , peasant in the big Shitty, Ginetix, to name a couple . RIP Dave
Bravo man 👏🏻 What a lovely and moving tribute to an unsung hero. A better obituary than anything you will see or hear in the papers today. Thank you. Amazing.
Amazing Tribute pal! I am an original 'punk' from 1977! I am 56 now, and adore the Stranglers ! Dave Greenfield was the 'Ray Manzarek' of the 'punk scene', the whole band were amazing musicians, but Dave Greenfield was very special , to the point of being 'unique' God Rest his Soul! Superb tribute, thanks Ben. The terrible news of Dave Greenfield has brought this situation home to me. SLG is credited to both Hans Warming, also keyboard player, and Dave. The song predates Dave's joining the band but I strongly suspect it is his keyboard arrangement that shaped the song before its later release. Whatever now happens to the Stranglers , things can never, ever be the same. RIP Dave Greenfield.
Really sorry to hear that. Thanks for the video. I liked the earlier solos best e.g. Straighten Out and Go Buddy Go (outro). Shame that his Hammond was stolen but he overcame that with the later classics you highlighted.
I totally agree. Earlier this year I decided to book tickets to see the Stranglers and to see Dave performing live whilst there was still time was my main reason. Ultimately it wasn't to be, so more fool me for leaving it too late. It's amazing not only how prolific they were in the early years (same as lots of bands from that era), but how different they still sound to this day. It's worth a read how Jet Black (drummer and founder) started the group (can be found on their website). He was in his late 30s. To anyone around my age that's a nice thought.
Great tribute man, if Daves up there looking down i think he would be very happy with this, your playing is beautiful. I grew up in this era of exceptional, exciting music and slowly these bands are disapearing, Motorhead and the Ramones being examples where they are literally all gone. As a teenager hearing no more heroes for the first time absolutely blew my mind, it was one of the first singles i bought and that was me hooked on punk, The Stranglers had a unique sound largely down to Dave and they really stood out in the fact it was obvious they were all musicians, there were not many bands around at that time with the skill levels of Greenfield, Burnel, Cornwell, thanks for bringing back some great memories 🙂
Normally watch your Championship podcasts......but Bravo Ben, this popped up on my youtube feed, and I have to say you did him proud....saw The Stranglers a few times, the last time at Brixton Academy, there was a delay in them starting that night, but my god they had lost nothing when they finally played..I took my son and a daughter and will always be special night RIP Dave Greenfield

Love your footy channel and though I often see a keyboard sat behind you I had no idea you were that good. Excellent tribute to a unique player from a unique band.
The greatest keyboard player in rock history.
Love the profile picture. You clearly have great taste. Rest in Peace, David Greenfield.

Loved how he drank a beer during his No more hero’s solo, so cool. RIP
Followed the stranglers since I was a kid (56 now!) Lost count how many times I've seen them. Goodbye dave. You helped give me the best years
I am also 56 Paul you wrote my tribute for me
I'm 56 too lol, Stranglers always played at very high volume so as to educate others about really fantastic music.

Love your footy channel and though I often see a keyboard sat behind you I had no idea you were that good. Excellent tribute to a unique player from a unique band.
Awesome mate. Me mum was a huge fan of this band, she's passed the torch to me now.
