I recently started machine quilting after years of hand work. It's about to kill me lol but I got a panel like this recently for $2 at a yard sale. Think I will follow along even though I'm several years late lmao!
I began free motion quilting on my domestic machine years ago by watching your early videos. I love how you go over the basics, set up, thread, tools...again at the beginning of this video. Thank you for your patience and teaching skills!
Leah, would you consider doing this Big Dream quilt on a longarm? I love the panel and have a longarm (new to the longarm world) and would love to learn tips and tricks and also a step by step tutorial on a long arm.
Sorry if I missed this but did you also echo the small center blobs? Do you ever feel they get too small for echoes? I’ve had my dream big panels so long, thanks for the inspiration to dive in!!! Do you have a hard copy to follow? Like book or pamphlet?
Love your instructions they are so helpful. My question is about the Isacord thread, I have a ton but have never quilted with it. What about washing the quilts? Does it hold up? Tension also? Needle size etc... Thank you for all you do :)
Yep, I've been using Isacord for more than 10 years and all of my quilts are looking great. Lots of washing, lots of wear and the thread still looks gorgeous. I use a Universal 80/12 needle. Tension is different for every machine. On a longarm I use a size 18 needle.
Leah?Do you outline all of the petals etc with one colour of thread? and then change your colours according to the change in petal colour to use the other colours of threads?
Yes, I quilted the entire quilt with all one color of light blue thread. You can find a guidebook to help you understand more here: leahday.com/products/dream-big-guidebook
Hi Leah, I noticed you said to wash the flannel 3 x because it shrinks so much. But then do you also wash the panel and backing as well, because that also will shrink, and if the flannel doesn’t, it will still pucker, right? I’ve actually been wondering about using two layers of flannel as a batting in a quilt. I didn’t realize it shrinks so much more than quilting cotton.
Yes, I wash all fabric for the quilt, and the flannel 3 times. The flannel has a lot more shrink than regular cotton and will really shrivel if you don't wash it hot!
Leah, thank you so much for tip! I like the crinkled, old fashioned look, but that might be too much! Wait, do you know how flannel compares to 100% cotton batting? Does the flannel shrink a lot more than batting would?
Thank you for sharing the details about how you use your slider. I have pieced two quilt tops this week while on quarantine, and I thought my slider would make it easier. I can’t wait to try it on the next one. I have the ivory dream big panel that I plan to quilt this summer. I plan to do it on my longarm. Do you have plans to demonstrate how to quilt one on the longarm?
Wonderful Stephanie! Unfortunately I don't have an accessible longarm right now to film on. My house flooded in February and it's really difficult to film on my longarm due to the renovation. I hope to be able to make new videos in June and will likely pick a different panel to focus on longarm quilting over the summer.
No, I'm only filming Dream Big on a home machine, but you can absolutely take the ideas and designs and quilt them on a longarm. I don't have an accessible longarm right now to film on. My house flooded in February and it's really difficult to film on my longarm due to the renovation. I hope to be able to make new videos in June and will likely pick a different panel to focus on longarm quilting over the summer.
I too would like to know what thread and thread weight you use in the bobbin please? I love Isacord as well but seem to have more problems balancing the tension with it. Thank you for your great videos. Moira A
I'm turning my Dream Big Quilt into a jacket, so I used flannel as the batting. If you want the designs to stand out, use a puffy batting like Quilter's Dream Puff or Hobbs Heirloom Wool. If you also want to make a jacket, definitely use something thinner like flannel.
I made a quilt from the Kabloom panels last year and loved working on it. I'm ready to do the full panel. Thank you for offering your tutorial. Guess I better get my panel!!
I did a coral one with feathers inspired by Jean Truelove’s channel. My daughter claimed it and it hangs in her apartment. I used a facing instead of binding on it that I learned about from the Quilting Roadie. I really like the color way you are doing
I've been wanting to make a special jacket for myself. I've been looking at boiled wool but I'm so intrigued by the idea of a quilted jacket done with one of these beautiful panels. I hope you share all of the details. What jacket pattern are you going to be using?
I'm using Butterick 4610. I have ended up needing to quilt TWO panels though! The details can making the jacket ended up being quite involved, which is why I shared them in the guidebook - leahday.com/dreamguide
I just found these Dream Big video's. Love the technique your using very different than all feathers. I have done three with feathers but I will try out your leaf effect. Have you seen the New Leaf Panels by Hoffman? This technique would be perfect for those too! Thanks Leah for sharing so much with us quilters.
I hope you did a beautiful quilt. I can't believe it took me until now to find this panel. I got six of them because they are so beautiful. I'm gonna start mine now.
Have you ever tried a sitdown quilting machine like the Tiara? Love mine. I can't FMQ on a domestic machine to save my soul. You've got some talent there.
Yes, I have a whole series of Sit Down Sunday videos on a Grace Qnique 14+. Unfortunate we no longer offer that machine as a sit down model. leahday.com/blogs/machinequilting/frame-quilting-friday-machine-quilting-fun-on-a-longarm
Please check the instructions in the Block 1 Pattern and you can see how the technique works in this video: leahday.com/blogs/machinequilting/how-to-connect-supersized-quilt-blocks-quilt-as-you-go-tutorial

pro trick: watch series at kaldroStream. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Hassan Yael Yea, been using flixzone} for years myself =)
@Hassan Yael definitely, have been using Flixzone} for since december myself :)

I'm thinking about it! It would be fun to make one more as a baby quilt since I'm expecting a baby girl in August!
@@LeahDay Congratulations Leah. How exciting for you and your family. I'm game for any longarm quilting lessons on panel fabric.
So happy you did this 🙏👯♀️
do you suggest FMG on a regular machine instead of doing the quilting on a long arm machine??
Are there still people discovering your house wonderful teaching? It’s no’s 2021 and. I am almost ready to jump in
Sorry if I missed this but did you also echo the small center blobs? Do you ever feel they get too small for echoes?

🙄🤦🏻♀️ I’m so stupid! You do have a guide!
Yep! You can find the Dream Big Guidebook here - leahday.com/products/dream-big-guidebook
Got it!!! Thanks, very through and helpful 😉
You are amazing at your tutorials. Thank you so much!!! I'm starting mine now. I know I'm late to the party, but better late than never.

Leah Day thank you so much I forgot to ask about bobbin thread
Leah Day What about the bobbin? Do you use isacord in there as well? Thank You
That is going to be very pretty. What a great way to practice. Thank you Leah!

Lots of great ideas here, have had the panel for a year trying to decide what to do with it, thank you Leah.

Former Bluprint follower, now a new subscriber. Interested in FMQ on this beautiful panel.
Welcome aboard!

Leah, will you be doing this quilt a long with a LONGARM option? I really appreciate all your lesson videos.

I use Isacord in the bobbin too. I always match thread as that is what's easier for me.
Will try to get it done before next lesson, thank you Leah
Can you tell us what batting you chose?

@@LeahDay will you share with us how you do that? What an awesome idea
I wish I was joining you on this quilt along. It is beautiful. I hope we get to see your jacket!
Soon! Right now it doesn't have sleeves! LOL!

Oh my goodness. That looks phenomenal. I was going to sit this out due to ruler expenses, but we'll...I think I need to play along.
Thank you Jessi! I'm so happy you're joining in the fun!
Ooh I need to get rulers, do you have longarm rulers?
Absolutely! leahday.com/products/basic-ruler-quilting-kit?variant=12299537383496
