The amount of detail and all the research you put into these homes never fails to impress me. This one was no exception. So special! And I love the delightful touch of placing Ricky's drums in the bedroom closet! And I want that dresser!
I always assumed that kitchen door led to a closet or small pantry. Years later, when I bought a house built in the 50’s, it had a door just like it in the same location as compared to the entry door. It was a small closet pantry and was very convenient to have. It was a very efficient use of space.
I thought about that at first too. But even if it was just a standard depth of a coat closet [2 ft] and then you add studs and drywall, you end up with it protruding out about 2'6" into the hallway. If the hallway is 4 ft, that only leaves 18 inches to get around. I love when others get into the details of these homes and try to figure them out.
Sorry, one more question. Was your pantry flush with the wall or did that wall bump out into the kitchen? I'm trying to figure out how there would be depth to the pantry and yet not have it protrude into the hallway. Thanks.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane even with all the irregular angles and such? My 1950’s house had little closets tucked in wherever they could fit a little extra storage space. 😎
We lived in NYC. I was born late 1940’s. I remember my parents watching the show and saying an apartment that big, in Manhattan, would be unusual and cost a fortune.
No washer and dryer, no laundry room in bldg, washer outside on porch drying clothes by hanging in the kitchen. That would make people crazy especially in winter! By today's laws little Ricky's bedroom could not be called a bedroom because you had to go through another room to get to it. That's a no-no in NYC.
Meee too!👌 love the nooks, crannies, built ins. I don’t live there, but Burbank and Glendale have a lot of houses, apts. like this. I’d actually like to live there JUST because of that reason. I could never convince my other though.🙁 And a lot of the furniture back then was so practical. I actually used to have a drop leaf table that when done using, there were four folding chairs that stored into it when done, a little drawer for your utensils in an (when stored) area that was about 3x18 space. The wings were a great size. When it was set up, it seated 4 easy, 5-6 a bit crowded, but you could do it, a regular size table. I’m SOOO sorry now I passed it on. It was great for sewing, buffets, too lol.
Except for the green tones, I would gladly live in an apartment just like this! I don't see this 70+ year old place as outdated at all. I'd probably use rich, deep colors to define the spaces.
Wow! Just wow! We grew up watching this show. You did an incredible job of reminding us of all the good times we had watching the “I love Lucy” shows. Those were good days.
This was my favorite apartment of the two. However, my favorite living space they inhabited was the hotel suite they stayed in while in Hollywood. There was something so quintessential mid-20th century L.A about it. You spoke of the picture that found its way into several other TV programs. One thing I noticed about Paramount Studios from the late 60's and into the 70's was how a lot of the artwork and furniture from The Brady Bunch made its way into at least two other TV shows: Love American Style, and Mannix. In fact, there is one episode of Love American Style where the head shots of the entire Brady Bunch made an appearance in one scene (I believe the episode was titled, "Love and the Dummies?"). The Brady couch even made an appearance in an episode, and also their curio cabinet in another. I'm sure stuff like that has happened a lot over the years, often escaping our notice. This was so much fun - especially with our two guests!
Studios repurpose sets furniture all the time. They will reuse a defunct series entire sets verbatim when a new rolls out. The logic behind it I'm guessing would be, If it gets the axe after the first season at least money wasn't wasted on a new set. Most of the pieces of a set look showroom new even though they were acquired years ago.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Hi Marina! Here's something else you may find interesting. I commented before, a while ago, that I used to work at Universal Studios in the 80s as my Day Job when I was a young actor. One thing I had noticed was that they would trash an extraordinary amount of new sets and wood etc once they were done with them! I asked my friend, who worked in a different department and had worked there longer than me, about it and his explanation was very interesting. On the humongous Dumpsters where they trashed the set materials I couldn't help but notice that the company stamped on the trash bins was called Universal Refuse Company.. My friend confirmed that Universal Studios owned the Refuse Company separately and would collect the set materials, recycle them and then the Studio part would claim the sets as a loss come Tax Time! What a Hat Trick that was!! Ahh, good times..
A fond Memory for me is showing the nursery. Notice the wall hangings in Little Ricky’s room. The character of Little Bow Peep on the wall was the the exact wall hanging I had in my bedroom as a little girl.

I started watching I Love Lucy when I was sick from school in the early 70s and during the summers. Thank you for posting my memories in color. Your videos always bring a smile to my face.
I used to watch I Love Lucy as a kid with my grandparents. always loved I Love Lucy. The Lucy show. it was simple times and you're right it was like family. those are the good old days🥰 literally thank you for the tour. I really enjoyed it!!!!
Thanks for the tours. Maybe that "Mystery door" is a kitchen closet for a broom or vaccum cleaner, a utility closet or pantry for more canned goods like many kitchens have and like I have. I like that they didn't put TV screens over a fireplace back then! I much prefer a big mirror or artwork. Since I'm a professional artist/illustrator and now painter, most of the artwork on my walls are my own, saves a lot of money from having to buy artwork. I have an upright piano similar to theirs that I've had since I956 when I was 8 and have been a lifelong pianist and am composer as well and have performed my work in public locally. Looking forward to more fascinating videos of homes from movies etc. I also love drawing floor plans, but it must be real fun to do the computerization of rooms and decorate them, too!
@brendadrew834 I'm glad you're enjoying these. Upcoming tours: "White Christmas" on Thanksgiving. "Pillow Talk" hopefully in December or January and "Laverne & Shirley" in February.
It is amazing how the houses/apartments featured on your channel are such a part of my life---as mentioned in the video, I also thought about how these people are essentially family since I know them so well and have spent so much time with them in their homes.
You are so correct. These homes you do are like my second home. I watched them religiously and still catch them on tv. Thank you for doing what you do.
Wow, I loved everything about this tour! You actually brought a tear to my eye talking about why we love seeing these tours and the nostalgia and comfort they bring. I was born in 1958 and have such fond childhood memories of those simpler times. Thank you so much for what you do, and I cannot wait until you do the country house some day! ❤
Such an important person in any script is the person who makes sure the consistency of the sets. It takes a meticulous eye. Brilliant Rick and great presentation

I just love the details you add, like Ricky's bongo drums in the closet. 17:54 It's just a glimpse but that made me smile. Thanks for another wonderful video.
You put in an amazing effort to provide such detailed information and to be as accurate as possible. I appreciate you and your talent so much. AND - you put Ricky's conga drums in the walk-in closet. Until I saw them just now - I would have thought he kept them at the club. Thank you, Marina for another tour. Oh - and thank you for mentioning the Jamestown, New York Lucy/Desi Museum. I've been there and it's just a world of fun to visit. There's an entire tour of "Lucy" places to visit. Just a hint for travelers through that area - it's less than a day's journey to Indiana, Pennsylvania to see the Jimmy Stewart Museum and 1/2 way between the two cities is Puxatawney where that rascal of a groundhog predicts a longer or shorter winter each year. That is a worthwhile place to also visit.
What a treat, Marina! I have the whole series, including the color episodes, on DVD and run an episode every night. The show is so much funnier than any of the “sophisticated” junk comedies aired today. I wish you could do the Ricardos’ Connecticut house in color-but that might be a real challenge, since I never could figure out the floor plan! But then, you probably could. Thanks again!
This was a treat. I’ve always loved APT. 3 D. I try to pay attention to the props used. I’ve never seen the asian figurines, or candlesticks or vases with the long prisms hanging down. I have a few of the brown Saks hat boxes the are always visible on the top shelf of the closet. Sometimes Lucy is carrying it in, with the top altered with paper so you can’t read the logo. After many years of searching, I finally found out what company made the tablecloth that Lucy used often, even in their Connecticut home. It was a California linen company called Cala Art or Cala Print. It came in several different colors. They hardly ever come up, so when one popped up on eBay, I made sure I would be the owner. I’ve tried to figure out what the pottery vase that looks like it has a feather on the front of it. Maybe someday.
Your choice of so much minty green in Lucy's apartment would have warmed the cockles of ol' Max Factor's heart. The "For Redheads" room of his studio is decorated in pale green because he felt that color was most complimentary to redheads -- and Max Factor, of course, is credited with turning Lucille Ball into one of us "gingers".
Another beautifully rendered tour! Just fabulous! I love the mid century details of the furniture on the show. I love that you found the exact images of the little fairytale characters in little Ricky’s nursery. That set was such a great representation of the “dream home” of middle America at the time. I was having a conversation today about how the concept of the dream home has changed over time. Then it was very functional but not huge in square footage. They had some great details too. Recently nearby my neighborhood in Nashville, Patsy Cline’s “dream home” sold. It was a modest mid century ranch but very comfortable. Nowadays, no country music star would consider that their dream, they would need at minimum of 3000 square feet, a stable for horses, a guest house, and five acres, lol!
Interesting insights! Rick Carl provided the images of the nursery decals to me. He found all of the art for me. I loved getting to work with those two I Love Lucy experts. It really helped me with accuracy. Glad you liked the tour.

Loved it! Especially that you chose that particular episode as I also love Ricky’s rendition of Little Red Riding Hood. Plus I love the wall decorations in Little Ricky’s room.
They had such a realistic home in my eyes. The combination of old and new furniture, the way it was arranged to be comfortable, and how it didn't always have the best/newest of appliances and electronics. It's comforting in a way since it feels like people actually lived there.
Yes. I know what you mean. It's like they collected furniture slowly over time, like most people. Love this apartment. And, you're right. It feels so comforting.

Incredible as always!! I loved this so much. All of the detail you include is just amazing: the Degas Ballerina painting that I always used to notice when watching the show, the mystery door in their first kitchen, and the image of Lucy and Ricky on the bedding in little Ricky’s crib! I had forgotten about the episode when Lucy and Ethyl went to see the bigger apartment, and did not remember that the former tenant had a grown daughter in what would become the nursery. Here’s a thought - maybe the nursery was a few feet longer, and the daughter could enter the tiny hallway that leads into the bathroom without having to go through her parents’ room?? You got me thinking about that! 😂 Thank you Marina!
I’ve always daydreamed about the floor plans of different tv homes. In the 2nd apartment, when they came back from Europe, little Ricky had grown from a mere toddler to a preschooler. That season he had his own room, entering from a hall. I had always imagined that Ricky got permission from Uncle Fred to close off the door into the nursery by Lucy’s bed, then construct a short hall beginning from the left of Lucy’s chest of drawers, then extending it slightly to lead to little Ricky’s big-boy bedroom door on the right, and somehow connecting it with the bathroom hall. That scenario would allow for the bathroom to remain where it is in the video, I guess. 🤷♀️ You imagined the apartment beautifully.
I love this! I have 'I Love Lucy' playing everyday for my mom. She's 94 and has dementia, she loves that show. I daydream about living in the Ricardo's apartment sometimes. I would love to see the apartment for 'Three is Company'. Thanks!
I never knew there were two apartments. I always noticed the window in the living room, sometimes there, sometimes not. I never saw the episode where they discussed getting a larger apartment. So very interesting. I love your work. It always evokes memories of my childhood. Heartwarming ❤️ Thank you for sharing your dreams with us.
Hello Marina,I Love Lucy has always been one of my favorite shows. Thank you,for taking us on a tour. Please can you take us on a tour of there country house. It was beautiful in TV. Thanks again😊
My grandmother grew up in my “grandparents” home. Originally a 1 bedroom but my grandfather added 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The tight closed cozy feel is real. Wall sconces and real wood trim. Same era quality built. The living room decor was early American, red carpet, white ornate furniture. Grandpa built a small bar separating the living room and kitchen. The front porch was similar to a home 2 houses over, a French style iron arbor. Tiled and ferned. It was on a small property, detached garage and gramps, sectioned off the yard brilliantly. So much pride and imagination people had with their homes. Many years later I finally appreciate what my grandparents did with what they had. By today’s standards, it was chic 😂.

So interesting. Very nice video. You can see why they were a beloved series. There was so much detail put into their “ home” that it truly enhanced the family feeling of love we had watching the ricardo’s and the Mertz’s.
I just LOVE your home tours and the information and detail you provide, especially this one, Lucy's apartment. I, too, grew up with 'I Love Lucy" and like you said, it provides a getaway to the past, an escape from the issues we face today in this sometimes crazy world. I love the nooks and crannies in this apartment, the various angles of the walls instead of a perfectly square room. I realize that in reality, it might be difficult in the real world to achieve such an actual building, but I still love it. Thanks so much for all the work you do on your videos.

Interesting, when I watched the show as a kid (in the 70’s) I never wondered about that door in the kitchen because it was just like the door my grandparents had in their kitchen that went into the mop closet. It’s where all of the brooms and mops and large cleaning supplies went. It’s also where we were measured every 6 months (I wonder if the marks on the door jam are still there… 🤔).
Thanks for sharing that. My grandma marked our growth on a door jam, too. You can see all of the other TV and movie home tours I've made here: ruclips.net/user/MarinaCoavideos?view_as=subscriber
I've just discovered your channel..what a treasure trove of beauty and fun! I grew up in the 70's and 80's and have to say how impressed I am by the amount of time and detail you put into your projects! Did you study architecture? I have some suggestions; Could you possibly do the Connecticut home from the later seasons of " I love Lucy/Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" and also the " Lucy Show" home, which I've always loved (and looks suspiciously like the Cunningham's home in "Happy Days?!") Thanks You so much! Bill R.
I ran into that exact same bedroom suite at an estate sale. It was called Fashion Trend by Johnson Carper. My favorite was their apartment or hotel suite was the one when they went to Hollywood for Ricky's film tests. That suite was so mid century modern.
Even tho tv home layouts are unrealistic its still fun to wonder about. Ricky Minds the Baby is one of my favorite episodes partly because we get to see more of the apartment with poor Lucy going back and forth (wonder how many steps that would’ve been on a fitness watch 😆) Ricky acting out the story was my favorite part. Thanks for these videos cause layouts was something I always thought about watching the shows growing up
This was SO much fun. Yes, to revisit these apartments is like going back to your own past, frozen in time. Back to the womb almost I guess. I always felt the door in the kitchen of the first apartment was a shallow pantry. I've had those, only about a foot deep. In the 2nd apartment, I felt the nursery was impractical as a bedroom of the previous tenant. And, I only recently noticed that the bedroom window in the 2nd apartment completely disappeared just before the move to the country. The constantly changing back porches as seen from the kitchen in both apartments always bugged me, as well as the hallway out the apartment door. Sometimes a picture, even a table, other times nothing. It seemed they had no continuity editor.
Last Saturday night I met a friend for dinner and the first thing that we both started talking about was your channel (Mary Tyler Moore episode). It's such an amazing program becuase it's so smart, realistic and thoughtfully presented. I just finished watching the I Love Luch episode: I really appreciate all the homework and thought that you put into these videos. Espeically Lucy. This show was from the 50's so I never saw it during the original run but in reruns that were continually shown. I believe I saw all the episodes at one time or another. Interesting to learn that little Ricky's bedroom was beyond his parents' room so he'd have had the same problem as the previous renter in having to go through his parents' room to get to the bathroom. It's good they eventually moved to the country since I doubt he'd have wanted to put up with that for long. I mostly remember the first apartment. Thanks again for all the detail you put into these. I look forward to watching them.
I wasn't around for it's original run either and yet know every episode as well. I bet there are a lot of us like that. It's been 70 years and is still known and loved worldwide. 😊

on the show they paid 125.00 a month rent. In reality 1200 sq ft on E. 68th Street would probably go for about 4K a month possibly a little less but more likely a little more. The Connecticut house in Westport today would be every bit of a million to 1.6 million. On an aside, remember the 70's show "Family" with Sada Thompson, Meredith Baxter (pre Birney) and Matthew Brodericks father - cant remember his first name, well in an episode they considered selling their home in Pasadena and the agent said, I'm confident we should list this at 65K and Sada Thompsons character, Kate, was taken aback "THAT much really?" LOL that house with a guest house would have a 2.0 in front of that 65! LOL
I just found your channel and I love it!!! I thought I was the only one who made floor plans and wondered what the homes in my favorite shows would look like if real. My favorite show is Road to Avonlea. I always tried to figure out the floor plan of Rose Cottage. One day I will build it.

I was rewatching an episode of "I love Lucy" as I always do lmfao. In particular, the episode where they switch apartments. The owner, Mrs. Benson said that there's an empty room now that her daughter went off to college. So you'd think that room was an average sized room not connected to the master bedroom. However, the show depicts the room as a nursery, larger than a closet but smaller than an actual room and the nursery being connected to the master bedroom. It's kinda funny and makes you think "Damn that poor benson daugher in that small ass room haha
I had those same thoughts. And how odd that she had to walk through their room to get to hers. 🤷♀️ You can see all of the other TV and movie home tours I've made here: ruclips.net/user/MarinaCoavideos?view_as=subscriber
Marina! This just popped on my screen (11/2024). The window by the piano overlooks tall (apartment) buildings and it implies they live on a higher floor of a modern apartment building. BUT when they dropped the washer, it looked like they live in a multi-unit house… Interesting. These videos are very well done and are such an escape.🌸🌸🌸
I love your CGI recreations, Marina. What I realized in this video is how much larger the set looks on camera opposed to how it is when In (or on) the set. I worked in theatre for eighteen years and from being on the stage or operating lights and sound from the booth, I realized the same thing. Luckily we had on set photos taken for many of the productions and even comparing them not in person to photos of the set from the audience, it's amazing the perception difference.
I love the incredible simplicity and ergonomic layout of Lucy's apartment. It's small and efficient but doesn't cut corners on light and space. Today, multimillion dollar NYC apartments have galley kitchens without windows, or "open" kitchens to save builders on time and materials, gaslighting renters that open kitchens are a benefit so parents can watch their children while cooking. No. Lucy's apartment is the way it should be.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Ahh... thank you for the message. Yes, I'm excited to see the rendering of your other apartments. Well done! If Lucy's apartment were for sale today it would probably be at least a $2 million apartment. Even if paid in full, building maintenance would be another $3,000 a month, forever. You can't be middle-class in NY anymore. There are too many nice bonus spaces, the detailing is great, there's a real wood burning fireplace, and the kitchen is to die for, with a balcony too!

I'm curious, did the one in your apartment jut out into the hallway or was it just the depth of the wall, like 4.5 - 6 inches?
Sorry, one more question. Was your pantry flush with the wall or did that wall bump out into the kitchen? I'm trying to figure out how there would be depth to the pantry and yet not have it protrude into the hallway. Thanks.

😊
I'm practically in tears watching and remembering the show and the good old days❤😊
Oh, I love that a picture of the Bradys even showed up. So funny. Sounds like I'm not the only one that likes to play detective with these shows.
Well, that certainly did not escape your notice! Good job!
@@antman5972 Thanks for the additional info.
Oh, how fun! Thanks for sharing.

So simple yet so charming, the best years we’re the best, I grew up in New York, best memories of the 1950’s 😊
😊
You are so correct. These homes you do are like my second home. I watched them religiously and still catch them on tv. Thank you for doing what you do.
Wow, I loved everything about this tour! You actually brought a tear to my eye talking about why we love seeing these tours and the nostalgia and comfort they bring. I just love the details you add, like Ricky's bongo drums in the closet. 17:54 It's just a glimpse but that made me smile. Thanks for another wonderful video.
Glad you noticed 😊I love adding little almost hidden surprises.
Oooh! Excellent information to add.
Thanks for the info! I would love to see that museum!
A wonderful visit with the Ricardos and Mertzes...It does take us back to a time when things seemed alot simpler. :-)
😊
I wish I was born in those times for that reason ♥️ I just love this era 😊 such great memories with I love Lucy and my mom
I'm definitely going to be doing that home. I love it.
I can’t wait, Marina! Thank you!
Goof for you on finding that and snatching it up. 😊
And, glad you liked the tour.
Well, that made me smile.
This was absolutely fantastic, Marina! Thank you for another great tour. I loved this so much!❤️
Thank you!
I love your videos. Not only do we get to see TV homes, but each video is chuck-full of information about the show.
Thank you. I'm glad you found the channel.
I never understood the floor plan for this show. I love your videos. You bring so much joy to me by talking about my favorite shows
You made my day 😊
It is so awesome to see every angle of the TV homes that are not seen on the show.

Me too! Such a cute nursery.
Cute, yes. But then I think of that full grown daughter from the previous tenants staying in such a tiny room.

Someone else brought up making the nursery a little longer. I like that idea. I love when others get into the details of these homes.
You imagined the apartment beautifully.
I wondered the same thing. I like your explanation. 19:21 I would love to hear Marina's response.
Oh! I love this idea. ❤
I love this! I have 'I Love Lucy' playing everyday for my mom. She's 94 and has dementia, she loves that show. I daydream about living in the Ricardo's apartment sometimes.

Sounds amazing. 😊

I've just discovered your channel..what a treasure trove of beauty and fun! I grew up in the 70's and 80's and have to say how impressed I am by the amount of time and detail you put into your projects! Did you study architecture? I have some suggestions; Could you possibly do the Connecticut home from the later seasons of " I love Lucy/Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" and also the " Lucy Show" home, which I've always loved (and looks suspiciously like the Cunningham's home in "Happy Days?!")
Thanks You so much! Bill R.

Thanks for these videos cause layouts was something I always thought about watching the shows growing up
Glad you like these tours. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great insights 😊

This show was from the 50's so I never saw it during the original run but in reruns that were continually shown. I believe I saw all the episodes at one time or another. Interesting to learn that little Ricky's bedroom was beyond his parents' room so he'd have had the same problem as the previous renter in having to go through his parents' room to get to the bathroom. This is another one that I'd like to actually live in. I didn't know that I want to live in the I love Lucy set until now. Great job!
I love it too!
Great Job? So enjoyable to watch.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I'll have to check out Andy Griffith. Thanks!
Marina your channel is amazing, priceless videos and detail. Thank you to your guests also
Thank you! It was great having Rick Carl and Tom Watson on board. They helped a great deal with the accuracy.
I am always awestruck with how well done each of these videos are!! Thank you so much for all your amazing detailed hard work!
Thank you. I sure love making them. Glad to know there's others out there that love exploring these homes.
Excellent work! Fascinating! I loved seeing the color choices, 4th wall and furniture placement.
Thank you! Glad you liked it.

I LOVE your videos of TV and movie homes!! I see so many things that I simply had not noticed before, even after watching these shows many times. It’s obvious that you’ve put in a lot of work into each of them. Thank you!!
Thank you!
This is the first time I have seen this excellent presentation. Thank you.
Glad you liked it.

Fantastic work!! Loved every second of it! Well done!!
Thank you!
on the show they paid 125.00 a month rent.
LOL
@@grdn02100 So true. And I learned something. I didn't know the dad on that show was Matthew Brodderick's father. Thanks.
I just found your channel and I love it!!! I thought I was the only one who made floor plans and wondered what the homes in my favorite shows would look like if real. My favorite show is Road to Avonlea. I always tried to figure out the floor plan of Rose Cottage. One day I will build it.
Maybe I'll get to that one someday. 😍

Interesting. Thanks for adding that information from someone who knows.
@davidhunternyc1 I see by your profile name that you must know NYC well. It's one of my favorite places, but I've never lived there.

@davidhunternyc1 I had no idea about the maintenance fees. Wow.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Yep. 😩
I love your videos! I love dollhouses and history, and this is like the best of both! My paternal grandmother had a mahogany drop leaf table exactly like that coffee table 4:31, but as far as we know, it only sits at one height. My aunt has it now, and I’m going to ask her to check it!
Its so nostalgic like you said to see these shows and their homes. I watched this show every night it came on and even after seeing the same episode over and over, it would still make me laugh. Like when in the country Lucy's wax flowers melted in the garden or her neighbor's garden that she ran over with the lawmower.
You know a show is a classic when you can watch it over and over and still laugh. Lucy was one in a million. 😍
This was great I enjoyed this so much!!!! Love watching your channel!!!!!
Glad you're enjoying the channel.
Even tho I grew up in a perfect size 3 bedroom family size townhouse. My entire life I always loved small, cozy homes and apartments so the Lucy set was always one of my favorites. This is so cool and I'm still waiting on that Different Strokes Tour😃👍🏾
I recently finished Lucy's country home too. Hopefully you saw that. But, if you like small and cozy - well, that thing is huge. 😊
This is an amazing tour! Thank you for the effort and great attention to detail.

Great video. This may have been mentioned already but I would think the door in the kitchen was a pantry.
I do love what looks like an exclamation point just past the living room closet into the hall.
Glad you liked the tour. 😊
