I'm a guy and I grew up watching this show and loving it, and I get weirdly choked up seeing this apartment in such detail. I don't know why, maybe because being a little kid in the 70's is something I look back on so fondly.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Why don't you do a vid on all the different layouts? You say it changes over the years, so make a vid showing how it changes, and compare them. I saw one yesterday where she was really cold, and was trying to get the stove to give off heat, it goes unnoticed, otherwise.
@RedheadLondon That's a good idea. I wouldn't create a tour for each version, but I could show screen grabs from the show of the different set design changes. Each of these tours takes me about 100 hours to create. So I woukd just show screen shots. Thanks for the idea.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I'm watching series 3 now, and trying to spot differences. I'm not very observant, so don't notice them, but the change in MARY is amazing. She looks better with the shorter hair and it is lighter.
thank you for this! When the first season came on the air, I loved the yellow wicker chair, so my mom suggested I write to the set decorator. He was kind enough to answer my letter and told me where they purchased it. Lucky for me (and my dad's convertable car!) we went to the Los Angeles store Rappaport, and the salesman told me yes, there were two chairs originally, the designer bought one, and I got the other! Many years later, I gave it to my niece, with the strict instructions "mary's chair" is to stay in the family!
Oh my goodness! I wish I could have interviewed the set designers. I wish he was still around.. I checked when making this episode. How smart of you to write and ask back then. Thanks for sharing your story.

Love what you did with this! So true that design is personal and tells a story. The Victorian vibe crossing over with the 70s is sort of Bohemian but tells the story perfectly! Great point about scale being slightly larger. Too bad not so as often in real life. You made Mary’s apartment even more beautiful! Thanks!!
I am 57. I watched the entire series first run. Those Saturday nights at my grandparents house is/was/and will always be so magical to me with MTMS, Newhart, Burnette. @@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I had severe abuse but my grandparents treated me like their son. I am thankful to this day for love, kindness and respect they gave me.
Rhoda's apartment always reminded me a little bit of the inside of Jeannie's bottle. Full bright colors and similarly shaped. Sad to think that so many of the cast are now gone. We do still have Dick Van Dyke ❤ This made my day!
I'm a guy and I watch the show every Saturday. For me, it was an event. Mary was definitely a role model for many, including me. While I didn't want to be her (I'm a guy) she did make me want to be a better person. Our lives sort of paralleled each other. I had just moved out on my own and rented my first apartment. Her best friend lived in her building. My best friend lived in my building I didn't have many funds, so I had to decorate my apartment on a shoestring budget. I went with style over expensive. All of my friends just loved my apartment and what I did with it, just like Marys'. In fact, my best friend dropped in unannounced and he brought along his sister. It was the first time she had seen my apartment. She asked me if I had hired a professional decorator! Anyway, Mary and the show did have a positive influence on my life and it did make (with some effort) make me a better person.

@@gobsmacked230 It's a nostalgic thing for me, too. I sat under the hair dryer watching it on Saturday nights, with my hair in pink sponge curlers, trying to get the little flip she had at the bottom of her hair. I was little, but I wanted to be like Mary. 😊
Exactly!!! I was entranced. I was 9 years old at the time the show began. I already loved Mary Tyler Moore from the Dick Van Dyke show, and suddenly here she was on my TV again, single, oh so fashionable, and with that incredible dream apartment. As girls we got nice, classy, capable, articulate Mary Richards as our role model. It really shaped who I wanted and thought I could be. It's so sad to me that today's girls get the low class, trashy Kardashians.
Mary Richards was my role model too as a little girl and I also wanted her apartment, her wardrobe and her job! I did go into broadcasting and lived on my own for a long time and I thought of Mary every step of the way. I loved her apartment so much. Just 2 years ago while visiting my aunt in Minneapolis, we found the actual house that they filmed the outside from. It has changed some but still a grande home. I was in awe and took so many photos as it was one of my favorite shows and I loved her kitchen as small as it was it was cute.
....That home was for Sale, at various times ,and it was q u i te Pricey. ... in 2017, it was listed for 1.65 Million ... it was built in the 1900's and its a really large Home...I think around 9,000 + square feet.
Mary's apartment didn't exactly whisper the 70's, itself! 😂 With the sunken living room and plush (almost shag) carpeting of mustard yellow and brown. And the olive walls. (I think the simulation modernized it a little bit by removing the carpeting and replacing it with what looks like hardwood or hard vynle flooring?) In any case, Mary's apartment was chic- but definitely 70's chic. Come to think of it, I think Rhoda's apartment screamed the 60's! With all the day glow colors. I know a lot of people still decorated with day-glow colors in the 70's (Especially hot pink and shocking orange)... but I think that was a holdover from the 60's. Rhoda's aesthetic didn't fully join the neutral tones of the 70's until she got married, moved to New York, and got her own show. I'm really geeking out on this! 🤓😂 I just love that whole era of my early childhood and this subject makes me happy! ❤
This show was such a classic. One of the best TV sets of all time. The Saturday night CBS lineup was epic in the 1970s. I would love to see you do The Bob Newhart Show.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I loved her apartment too. My own home reflects exactly who I am. I am a single (divorced) mom, my son moved out ten years ago but lives nearby. I can do what I want to it and I think that is one reason Mary's place appealed to so many of us women. It was hers, she didn't share it with a man.
I think it’s interesting how we’ve sort of harkened back to a Mary Richards way of life, in that the average apartment in a modern high rise is very small and as Mary did, utilizing space is crucial.
MTM show was 1970 to 1977. I was 13 thru 20 at 1977. Before Mary, there was That Girl (1966 -1971) Marlo Thomas. A daring concept of women's liberation. I always loved the step down into Mary's apartment as well as the built-in bookshelf. It is interesting how the set was changed over the seasons, but I never noticed. I wonder if the little wooden steps were an afterthought as the first season progressed giving the actors more options for movement? The progression from no steps to one that is permanently built in is a natural one. This is such a familiar space, having grown up watching MTM every Saturday night. No, you are not alone..I dreamed of being Mary and living in that beautiful apartment too! I love everything about that apt and to this day(I'm in my early 60's)I could live there:) This was an awesome episode! Thank you!
At 64 now, I was a 9-year old when The Mary Tyler Moore Show debuted. That apartment was magical!!! It was a character all on its own. I relished every second we got to see of it and every item of architecture and furnishings. Thank you so much for the tour down memory lane. When I turned 40, I got to move to Minneapolis. I ended up renting a studio apartment very close to the home used in the show. It was just a few blocks away and it was complete with the same giant windows with terrace on the front that Mary had. I was living my best fantasy life! I even got to walk around the same lake that Mary did in the credits. I was so shaped by Mary and Rhoda that, thank goodness, these characters were great role models. I was never so sad as when Mary moved out of that fabulous house and into her new cookie cutter one-bedroom high rise apartment. I truly missed that iconic studio apartment and really wished that the writers had just moved her into an equally fabulous one-bedroom apartment in the same house. One day when I first arrived in Minneapolis, I decided to take a liesurely drive through my new neighborhood. I suddenly gasped loudly, got chills, and nearly ran myself off the road!!! Right in front of me was Mary's unmistakeable house!!! I was in heaven! Thanks again for a great video. I am subscribed.
I would love to see the apartments from the show Rhoda. It always fascinated me that they were all in the same building. Your videos are amazing and show how hard you work on them. I love watching your take on the 4th walls too.
This was awesome, thanks for including Rhods's apartment. For me, it has always been about Rhoda, she was so pretty and had just a great sense of style.
I absolutely loved this!! You are not alone in Mary being such an inspiration. The series took me from age 12 to age 19 and I fell in love with her character and apartment instantly! I decided that I wanted to be just like her and ended up putting myself through 4 years of nursing school with student loans and hard work. I had a series of 4 apartments and was single until the age of 36. I used all of the colors she had at the time in my first couple of apartments with brown, orange, yellow and olive green. I loved my life, my career and my independence and when I finally got married, I was truly ready! 😊

I firmly believe my life and career and my own independence was heavily influenced by Mary. I dreamed of having an apartment just like that. I vaguely remember this show from my childhood but I have no memory of Rhoda’s vibrant apt. Wow! What a colorful space! How could I forget that?? I’m impressed that she painted the exposed lath and plaster. I think it’s the unfinishedness of the walls that give it an attic feel to me. This is fantastic! My mom loved the Mary Tyler Moore show and, since we had only one TV when I was growing up, we watched what our parents watched. I have been an interior designer for the past 35 years and, more than any other visual experience I had as a kid, Mary's apartment without a doubt birthed my own interest in interior design. I hadn't seen the set in years but remembered everything about it - from the stained glass "garage door" at the kitchen breakfast bar to the bookcase "step" to the M on the wall. Thank you so much for doing this! (As a side note, I even remembered thinking that the plaster weeping between the lath in Rhoda's apartment meant there was no insulation - a really bad idea considering Minneapolis winters :-).
How cool that the show inspired a future interior designer! I bet you are not alone. I also find it interesting that even as a child you noticed the plaster between the laths! You were born to be a designer. 😊
I loved this show. I had the etc letters like Rhoda had in her apartment. I loved what you did with the 4th wall in Mary’s apartment. Ps...I love the missing walls you put in. It is so on point and it answers our questions. And to me, the show captured the feel of Minneapolis very well. Minneapolis back in the day had a certain feeling and this show captured it.
Fantastic work. Thank you. I will be visiting Minneapolis for the first time this summer and of course I will be driving by Mary's old apartment. I too have had an M on my wall since my first name is Mark. This may sound weird but I love that TV house interiors don't match the house exteriors. The REAL house in Minneapolis on Kenwood parkway, is just enormous beyond words. IT's a MANSION. 7 bedrooms. We never saw Phyllis' apartment more than a couple of times, and not enough to get a good feel for the place. Phyllis' apartment was on the first floor, and Babrara Gardner lived in the apartment on the second floor (She was played by Yvonne Wilder, and only appeared in one episode) Then Mary's was obviosuly the third floor. Since the real house was built in 1900, like many of that time, it had no driveway, so that's why scenes at the beginning always had Mary pulling up out front on the street. Today, the house has a 3 car garage that was added, but at a price... the house no longer has a backyard because of that. They installed a driveway, which I thought was not wise.... since the front yard is already quite small (Corner lot has a nice big side yard, but not much front) that driveway comes in at an angle and goes right up to the side porch of the house, and not the main entry. In it's original form, I'm almost certain that was a sleeping porch on that side of the house, which common in home before A/C really happened. To me, the driveway looks awkward on the lot, with it's skewed angle, and you'd have easy enough access to the garage in back by using the alley which has always been there between that house and the neighbors.
Thanks for letting us know all this. I understand wanting convenience (and off-street parking) but it is a shame to see these grand old homes defiled. Of course, people were no doubt saying the same thing when they were broken up into apartments.

Thank you for the tour! The MTM show was such an inspiration to me as a young girl that I had a career in both News and Visual Merchandising windows in NYC. I loved watching it with my Mom, and binge-watch it any chance I can get. The theme song says it all and it remains an anthem in my life. I was thrilled to have worked with Director Jay Sandrich on an episode of another series when I worked in set design and props. I can't believe how much her show shaped my life and always wondered how the rest of her apartment would have been.
I loved The Mary Tyler Moore Show when I was a kid. She was a huge inspiration to me. She was a working woman whose life never revolved around a man, her focus was her job and her relationships with her female friends, and I loved that. I always loved her apartment, and was very disappointed when Mary moved into the second apartment. To this day, I have a little wooden "etc." that is displayed on a shelf in my living room. That's my homage to the show, and reminds me to embrace my inner Mary and Rhoda.
LOVE! This tour was so fantastic. Without a doubt, Mary's apartment is my absolute favorite of all TV settings. You did a wonderful job touring it. I took a woodworking class in high school and yes, I made an M. It's my initial and as a little girl I always watched the show and loved that M on her wall. I never spotted the R though. Did you notice in the scene of Lou taking too much of the dinner there was a guy sitting behind the dining table at the little table by the window? That actor is Henry Winkler before he became famous as the Fonz.
So, you had an M too? But, you even made yours. Cool. Yes, I thought about pointing out "The Fonz." I just watched an interview with him about doing that episode. It's kind of sad and funny, because it lines up with what happened to him in that episode. He was new there, obviously, and everyone else knew each other. So, when they broke for lunch, he said the whole cast went off to wherever they go and he didn't have a clue where to get any lunch. He said that after that, when guest actors were on any show he was a part of, that he made sure that they knew where they could get some lunch.
My best friend and I like to borrow the "I'm the Mary, you're the Rhoda" line from Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion. They fought over who was the Mary, but in our case my friend is the Mary and I'm the Rhoda....and we're both totally cool with that! 👌 BTW I've even heard Oprah say she had an "O" on her wall!
I love that line, too! It was Oprah's favorite show and she received a "O" signed on the back by the whole cast when she had them on her show. What a treasure! ✨❤️✨
What a treat to see Rhoda's Apartment. I have always loved her place with the vibrant colors. It is so her and she's one of my all time favorite TV characters of all time. Valarie Harper made and created her, I can't see anyone else playing that role. Thank you for this. The bookcase in Mary's living area has such a charm. I think that is what made me fall in love with that apartment. Sometimes I like to watch the show just to see this apartment. In many ways I was sad when she moved to the new apartment, but I do understand that it was about Mary Richards moving forward in her life.

Hi! I'm so happy your channel was in my "recommendation"...I love it! Watching Rhoda as a young girl inspired me to become a window dresser. As a little girl, my parents would take us kids to see the Christmas display windows in our city's downtown. Back then, there were no malls...but every city had fabulous old department stores with huge windows. The windows displayed everything from fashion to animated Santa Claus, his elves, & a steamer model train. When I saw those amazing displays, I wondered who designed all the detail & beauty? All I knew was that someday I would do that too. So when I saw the character "Rhoda" and heard the job-title "window-dresser"...From that day on, I called myself a window-dresser! Lol! After high school, (college was never an option for me)...I just needed to get myself to a department store & do my thing! And that's exactly what I did! I had no training. I had no experience...Not even a portfolio of pictures. What I had was confidence in my ability to do the work...I just knew it! In the beginning of my career, I sometimes would work for free...Just to get my foot in the door. Once I showed my skill, and my window displays = foot traffic & profit for the stores...Well my reputation was one of " Oh Dee Dee, she's the best!...Hire her immediately!" Eventually, I traveled all over the country designing displays for: department & specialty stores...and later, even airport shops. I even became a "visual display trainer"...(Training on the corporate level) So you see, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is near & dear to my heart. I loved both their apartments...But to this day my home is sooooo inspired but Rhoda's bright, fun & whimsical space...(with just a bit more square footage. Lol!) Sorry for the long comment...but I loved my work for 40+ years...it was a fabulous ride! Thank you so much for posting these 2 apartment who has inspired so many of us gals to dream (&) actually live our dreams. Peace friend. ❤💃 (BTW, As of tonight, I'm a new subscriber to your amazing channel🙂❤)
People (mainly men) underestimate what a life changer that series was for us. An independent woman (they tried with "That Girl" but that show was still a generic sit-com) who sleeps with the men she dates, cares more for her career than the men she dates and spends all her most important moments with her found family. A whole generation of young women aspired to the lives Mary and Rhoda modelled. I, too, wanted to live Rhoda's life more than Mary's. And did.
I know this doesn't qualify with your quality of work, but I have always wondered what the Flintstones House and the Jetsons Apartment really looked like. I would daydream about living in the Jetsons fabulous apartment. Would you ever consider doing that just for fun??

I just wanted to say that I really love the 4th wall and bathroom you created for Rhoda's apartment. I particularly love the niche over the bathroom door. I've seen a lot of old homes with those. Rhoda often joked about how tiny her apartment was so it was definitely a small space.

Hi! Would love to see any of the homes featured in any movie director Nancy Myers...her sets are amazing! Thank you!...And have a fabulous Memorial day weekend!🇺🇸❤💃
I love this. This show inspired me so much as a teen. I use to watch this show as a rerun as a teen in the 90s. I was def inspired. I think subconsciously I became a little bit Rhoda and a little bit Mary as an adult. I had a very unique apartment in my early to mid 30s that I called my Mary Tyler Moore apartment. It had a loft and I painted one wall bright orange. This was a joy to see! One of my favorite episodes was when Rhoda redecorated Lou’s apt. To this day I think it was amazing design. It was very modern but also retro. I’m the episode Lou hated it which was of course hilarious.

Another great job, i also wondered how cold Rhoda apartment was especially since they were in Minnesota 🥶 how about the farm house from Green Acres? I know it was part of the plot but it always bugged me they never fixed up the house. It would be cool if you showed it as it was on the show then how it could've been if they fixed it up.
Great idea. It would a great to see how the farm house would look if they finished...I understand why they couldn't never finish their home since such an integral part of most weekly plots shows
Heh heh ... you reminded me of ... I lived in Malibu for a while with two housemates, in a little house a quick walk up from Pacific Coast Highway. We did not arrange for telephone service right away, and it was fine with us -- even in the days before phones you could carry around with you. But then one day we had a visit from one of our friends from school, and when he asked if he could use the phone we told him how to get to the pay phones in front of the party store down on PCH. When he returned, he commented: "At least on Green Acres they only had to climb the telephone pole."
I too looked forward to every Saturday evening to see “Mary”. I would love to see The Jefferson’s uptown apartment and perhaps the Bunker’s house from the old neighborhood next door. What fun!

I always wondered about the establishing shot showing Mary's apartment on the 3rd floor but Rhoda always goes up to hers. Was there 4 floors from the back? Not as bad a Full House having Uncle Jesse( who's last name changes from Cockran to Kotsopolis after season 1). He moves to an attic that never existed( per establishing shot) after marriage. If the extra floor was there. Joey & Jesse wouldn't have initially needed to live in the stair alcove ,& basement, respectively. Rhoda ' apartment had attoc walls with no insulation....in Minneapolis?
Right now, kids are living their midcentury modern style, but maybe thr next generation will adopt the 70s as their favorite. Also--bless you for giving credit to the art director and set designer by name.

@RedheadLondon That's a good idea. I wouldn't create a tour for each version, but I could show screen grabs from the show of the different set design changes. Each of these tours takes me about 100 hours to create. So I woukd just show screen shots. Thanks for the idea.

thank you for this!

Mary’s apartment was ICONIC and felt more fabulous and upscale than it was.
It was swoon-worthy for sure.
Thanks!!

I think it’s interesting how we’ve sort of harkened back to a Mary Richards way of life, in that the average apartment in a modern high rise is very small and as Mary did, utilizing space is crucial.

So were his wife and daughter, very down to earth people. Thank you for this clip. May the entire Mary Tyler Moore Show cast all rest in peace.

No, you are not alone..I dreamed of being Mary and living in that beautiful apartment too! I love everything about that apt and to this day(I'm in my early 60's)I could live there:) This was an awesome episode! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it. Brings back so many memories for me as I make these tours. I'm glad it does for others too.
I'm the same age and I never missed an episode. My dad was a fan and got all of us our initials one Christmas. My "M" is still on display.
Same!

I was not even a preteen when the show first came out. I HAD to watch it each week, by myself, every week. I share the sentiments as you do regarding Mary, her life, her job, her independence, her clothes, and THAT apartment. I loved it then and still do now. I firmly believe my life and career and my own independence was heavily influenced by Mary. I dreamed of having an apartment just like that. I was just talking about it with my hubby the other day, and told him I could draw an accurate rendering of that apartment by memory. I studied it. In my opinion it’s the best home of any show I’ve ever seen, I just loved it that much. Thank you so much for all of the time you spent doing this, and the walk down memory lane. Me tooooo!
As always thank you so much for your dedication to bringing us insight into iconic movie homes. It is truly a bright spot in my day to sit with you and hear your thoughts on the set itself as well as imaginings of the spaces we don’t have much information about.

Thank you! Yes, I wonder how many people have their initial on the wall.
I had an "etc" on my wall.
I couldn't find letter M wall decor but I did find an M keychain made from sturdy leather. It must be from the 1980s or even late seventies and I still use it !

It was a unique place with the entrance and book shelves and closet going to the bathroom. I was always curious about that bathroom. Surprised it was as large as you’ve shown. Thank You Marina. I love watching your work

❤❤❤ lived in Minneapolis for many years and loved driving past Mary's and Rhoda's apartment house. It is a beautiful home. The chain link fence around the house from the 70s in the show doesn't exist now. It is actually a swanky neighborhood. I loved the kitchen and the roll down stain glass window.
Cool that you got to see it so often. It's on my bucket list to go there someday.

It kinda like they're from an alternate universe that has a different set of physical laws than ours universe. This is probably why I love your channel so much.

Omg as a teen Mary’s apartment was the blueprint 😊

BTW I've even heard Oprah say she had an "O" on her wall!
I was sad when she moved to that 2nd apartment too.
That apartment was so dull by comparison.
When I’m an elderly woman who has already “made it” Mary’s apartment will be my dream home! Thank you for this fantastic tour and insights about the show that formed my values and aspirations as a 12 year old girl

I even became a "visual display trainer"...(Training on the corporate level)
So you see, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is near & dear to my heart. I loved both their apartments...But to this day my home is sooooo inspired but Rhoda's bright, fun & whimsical space...(with just a bit more square footage. Lol!)
Sorry for the long comment...but I loved my work for 40+ years...it was a fabulous ride!

If the extra floor was there. Joey & Jesse wouldn't have initially needed to live in the stair alcove ,& basement, respectively.
Rhoda ' apartment had attoc walls with no insulation....in Minneapolis?
That house is impossible. I want to explore it someday. I made a tour of the main floor, but haven't ventured upstairs yet.
The apartment from 'That Girl!'
I plan on it. I loved that show!

A viewer gave me that suggestion!
Me, too‼️
Right now, kids are living their midcentury modern style, but maybe thr next generation will adopt the 70s as their favorite.
Also--bless you for giving credit to the art director and set designer by name.
