Hello, Quick question, is the 220+ able to transcode 4k with HDR tone mapping with hardware accélération ? It seems so but i'm looking for a confirmation before upgrading ! Thks
I turned my old 2012 Mac mini into a Plex server (as well as a file server via Samba) running on Ubuntu LTS & I love it! I really need to organize my media though because it’s all just thrown in there.
I built my own home server awhile ago(i5-9500k+16GB RAM), I use Windows for the ease of use (lack of knowledge on my part) and the ability to have a computer in the living room, just in case. I don't use RAID, but I have 2 - 14TB drives in the server, and I just manually copy new media to the fallback drive. I figure this would be easy enough to fix if the main drive fails. I can just pop a new drive in and copy the contents over. I've also just enabled direct play to all devices, no problem.
You can setup raid 1 pretty easily in windows with (manage storage spaces). Only problem is your disks will need to be formatted to set them up. So not possible to keep your data on them unless you backup your data to a separate drive or to cloud beforehand.
Hi, if you’ve got the duplicate media on another drive and one fails, just rename the replacement drive with the same drive letter and rescan, Plex will “link” to the same files. There’s no need to copy the files again. e.g. You have both drives D: and E: connected, D holds your media and E is the backup. D then fails. Remove drive D and rename E to D ( files won’t be affected ). Run the scan again. Everything will be intact - provided you have exact duplicates. If anything is missing in the backup HDD, those content will be “removed” from your Plex library. 👍🏼

Most of the stuff I have are DVD rips, and I've been meaning to upgrade a lot of them because now I have a reason to. It'll give me an excuse to go through my movie library and retool it.

The reason I know is my Denon shows "information" and I can be playing a 24/96 or 16/44 Flac audio as well as Atmos, and it always shows 48kHz on my receiver. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it Plex or the Shield? Does the new Shield also convert to 48kHz? I run Twonky on my WD and can dlna the audio to the receiver and get the correct playback, so it's one or the other converting it. Thanks!

I took an old Intel i7 with 16gigs of ram that was my main pc maybe 9 years ago and converted it to an Ubuntu server which I run Plex and Jellyfin on and watch on the Nvidia Shield. I really like Jellyfin more than Plex now but both are good options.
Be careful of low-end processors if you watch videos with SSA/ASS subtitles. Most media players don't support it and forces transcoding, which it does not do well. My DS920+ struggles with 1080P videos even with HW Transcoding.
@@cappy2112 DS920+ and DS1520+ has the same CPU. The most popular subtitle format is SRT, which just has Plain Text and Timing. SSA/ASS are feature rich formats, where you can specify positioning, sizing, font, etc. It's almost like Notepad Vs Microsoft Word. There are some workarounds, but they're not ideal.
In my country, these HDD’s are kind of pricey. I have come across with Wd Mybook duo, and there is 40% difference in price between my cloud pro. My question is how about I just plug my book duo into the shield and have a network option from my computer since it is the only device I will send my movies and tv series to? I have loved my Shield since day 1. But this latest Android 12 update has really killed the vibe. There are so many bugs it's almost unbearable. Even with Plex. I'm so sad. I hope they fix this soon

Hi Lon, love the channel!! Quick question, I am sharing my plex library with some friends and would like to know if there is a way that remote share 4K content on Apple TV, it always seem to transcoded to a lower version like 480p
How many similitaneous transcodes will that device support? I built an i7 server that supports 6-7 so that I can share my content with family and friends.
Hi bud… have been a long time subscriber and do enjoy your videos on Plex topics, I have a lifetime Plex pass and also have PR2100 as my server, I have noticed that a lot of photos that are taken with the latest IPhones don’t populate through Plex even though you can see them in the device app, do you have any solution to fix this in Plex?
Like a lot of us, I tend to get my music from RUclips, however Plex does not like the AV1 (extension) that RUclips is now favoring. Is there any way to get around that short of converting a lot of files? Isn't there a Codec out there? Any help you offer I will take gladly and I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.
Great overview. I love Plex for existing movies and tv but I have found the live tv interface doesn’t work great for me. It could be a function of my setup because I’m running Plex on an older machine. The issues I have is with fast forwarding and rewinding while a show is recording, delay while switching channels etc. I have subscribed to Channels DVR instead. As for my Plex setup, I run it on a well worn Core i5 machine that was a business desktop in a previous life. I have a 4tb spinning hard drive in the machine for content plus an SSD for the OS. It can run 2 1080p streams smoothly. It is pretty rare that we need to stream even two things at once.
Refresh Rate Switching causes problems on my Firestick 4k (which has the same settings as they are both based on Android). It was causing random transcoding of files that were properly encoded as H264 in a MKV container at 1080p 24fps. And it was forcing audio from EAC3 to Opus. Sometimes when I played the file everything was direct playing. Then I could stop and start the playback and it would switch to transcoding. With rate switching it was probably 1/10 times it would work properly and not transcode. Turned off rate switching and it no longer transcodes ever. Tested it a good 50 times back to back.
Great content is really helpful for beginners and pros. Any chance you can make a video about the issues Nvidia Plex is having lately with their updates. My plex server keeps stopping and I find myself having to reboot the Nvidea every time. I tried so many things but nothing seemed to stick. I even when as far as to factory resetting my Nvidia shield and set up everything from the scratch. But that didn't work either. Anyhow, thank you for all the great content.
I love Plex but I recently updated it and since have not been able to access it anywhere and it hasn't been working for a couple of weeks now, I gave up trying to get access to it, I use Unraid and that also is great.
Just letting you know they are working on a brand new player for Plex there's been problems with the one that's been out now for a while and they're working on it for a brand new player just for the shield so everything works flawlessly again
I Use an Nvidia Shield Pro (latest version) as my Plex server with an external HD attached. However I find when trying to watch 4K movies from the rest of TVs thru their native Plex apps, they either stuter or just stay loading. What can I do?
Hi Lon, I am running a Plex media server from a WD MyCloudHome 20TB edition for the most part it works fine however lately I am getting issues with media not playing, skipping and buffering but also stuttering from the media and audio out of sync and it is driving me crazy I have tried nearly every single guide and tip to fix this issue and nothing seems to work, I am aware that WD are not pushing updates to the Plex media software regularly or at least this is what was being said on reddit so I am currently at a loss as to how to fix this, Any advice on this issue or have you experienced this yourself as you are also using a WD NAS? (I also have hardware acceleration on via Plex Pass and this did nothing to fix my issue I have also replaced the media several times but it is effecting all media regardless of the settings I configure or replace)
It sounds like it might be trying to transcode video. The Home does not support hardware transcoding so that is likely the issue. Check the client and make sure that it's playing original quality.
@@LonSeidman I’ll give this a try. I am tempted to abandon the wd drive and build a better server from the parts I have lying around it’s just frustrating atm to keep dealing with these issues. Thanks again
Are there many problems with using the Nividia shield tv as a Plex server, I’ve heard some people say that running it from the computer is the better option
It usually works but it's not perfect. Last Shield update broke it completely for a couple weeks for instance. It can do some hardware transcoding (1080p, even a light 4K, no HDR though), but i sometimes have trouble if there are multiple streams at the same time
My nvidia shield was my first server, and it was fine for at the house, but couldn't handle many streams if you're sharing. I also had the problem of having too much content and got tired of just adding portable hard drives lol. And the biggest issue I had is that it would randomly not show my content and I would have to reboot my shield all the time.
Can you make videos about emby and jellyfin too? I feel like plex gets shilled a lot. but in reality emby or jelly looks really awesome(UI is better than plex and customizable) and works better sometime (Ex: when loading subtitle plex reloads the video but in jellyfin or emby it immediately works without hampering video playback)
I'm a big fan of Plex and running it on my Nvidia Shield Pro because it can run uncompressed 4K video. What I'm not a fan of are NAS drives. Beyond network lag, every one I've owned has failed. Either both drives fail at the same time or a new drive replacement won't rebuild properly. I've even had the NAS main board die and couldn't get a replacement. If much rather use a USB NAS but those don't seem common. Any suggestions?
I'm currently without traditional internet and only have a WiFi hotspot and phone. Is there any way to download local channel TV guides to Plex with this setup?

Took way too many hours to figure it out but I can't believe we've had about a 9-year Journey with the hdhomerun prime! Can't believe the WD PR4100 sells for more NOW than when I bought it! Can't believe how well it still works so exciting getting my library back online after so much downtime! Even put TV shows in my WATCHLIST!! 🙂
I took an old Intel i7 with 16gigs of ram that was my main pc maybe 9 years ago and converted it to an Ubuntu server which I run Plex and Jellyfin on and watch on the Nvidia Shield. I really like Jellyfin more than Plex now but both are good options.
Excellent video!
What is an Nvidia Sheild Pro? How would I use it? Why should I use it? Please advise.
I love Plex, thank you 🙂
Be careful of low-end processors if you watch videos with SSA/ASS subtitles.
Most media players don't support it and forces transcoding, which it does not do well. My DS920+ struggles with 1080P videos even with HW Transcoding.
Not sure what SSA/ASS subtitles are, I have a DS1520+. Is that a low end model?
@@cappy2112 DS920+ and DS1520+ has the same CPU. The most popular subtitle format is SRT, which just has Plain Text and Timing. SSA/ASS are feature rich formats, where you can specify positioning, sizing, font, etc. It's almost like Notepad Vs Microsoft Word.
There are some workarounds, but they're not ideal.
Shield Love!
In my country, these HDD’s are kind of pricey.
I have come across with Wd Mybook duo, and there is 40% difference in price between my cloud pro.
My question is how about I just plug my book duo into the shield and have a network option from my computer since it is the only device I will send my movies and tv series to?
Do you think PR2100 is worth the upgrade in my case?
I have loved my Shield since day 1. But this latest Android 12 update has really killed the vibe. There are so many bugs it's almost unbearable. Even with Plex. I'm so sad. I hope they fix this soon
Can you please tell me the pc requirements?
Does it has to have someone many ram, storage?
I also use dizque tv with plex to stream my content like tv channels with logos and adverts.
Hey buddy great info. Where do you put plugins, the option has gone from the quick menu thank you
Are you running plex on WD Nas or on shield?
I set up my Nvidia Shield using your instructions. Works great, but now I am trying to upgrade a USB 1-TB HD to a 2-TB. I copied all media to the 2TB. How do I change which drive Plex on the N-S is looking for?
I'm using the Synology 2 bay Ds720+ just upgraded my 8tb to a 16tb should be enough for me for a few years at least
Can I attach multiple external drives to my shield pro Plex server? I have 5 10tb drives connected to a usb dock.
Hi Lon, thanks for your quality videos. I have some multi channel music audio files and I'm not able to play them in 5.1 on plex on Nvidia shield pro 2019 with Yamaha RX-A860 receiver and when I play them, I have always pcm 2.0 on receiver info! Can anyone help me please?
When will plex bring out video rotate for home movies?
Lon do you have a link on best STEP BY STEP instructions on how to upgrade the WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra from OS3 to OS5 without breaking/messing up all the work I have done to setup my Plex server (I'm a lifetime Plex pass member) which I use for my HUGE library of FLAC audio files (CD rips). I need to know what to do in the right order on both the Plex side and the WD MyCloud UI side so that it all goes smooth with so so many horror stories of folks messing up months of their work to get their Plex setup up they way they wanted. I dont want to have the headaches. Thanks
I have a question I have two plex servers in the same network?
Can you do a video on going over HDR with Plex (specifically Dolby Vision)?
I am new to these things. I got WD ULTRA EX2 as NAS and plex is running on my Sony TV Google TV has Plex App and WD also has Plex app downloaded on it. Do I still need NV Shield?
Hi Lon, love the channel!! Quick question, I am sharing my plex library with some friends and would like to know if there is a way that remote share 4K content on Apple TV, it always seem to transcoded to a lower version like 480p
old shield is transcoding E-AC-3 only the new plays direct audio
*How is Plex better than just playing videos stored in a NAS folder?*
Would you ever consider a Pi4 and Was setup for the Plex server?
Raspberry Pi's are not good for Plex serving as they don't support hardware transcoding.
Thank you
Refresh Rate Switching causes problems on my Firestick 4k (which has the same settings as they are both based on Android).
I love Plex but I recently updated it and since have not been able to access it anywhere and it hasn't been working for a couple of weeks now, I gave up trying to get access to it,
I use Unraid and that also is great.
Just letting you know they are working on a brand new player for Plex there's been problems with the one that's been out now for a while and they're working on it for a brand new player just for the shield so everything works flawlessly again
Plex on TrueNAS works well.
And the new Nvidia shield 2019 and 2017 both support HDR10
How does the Mac mini work as a plex server/htpc?
Plex still struggling with 4k remux mkv files, any tips or back to Kodi LOL 😆
That's the issue I'm having right now. Did you figure out which setup to get? D.A.S or N.A.S?
I'm currently without traditional internet and only have a WiFi hotspot and phone. Is there any way to download local channel TV guides to Plex with this setup?
I should add, that I view my media on Plex with a wifi connection that has no internet. So maybe I can download the guide with the hotspot, then go offline for viewing. I haven't been able to make it work yet. Any tips would be appreciated.
Hi There,
Great video, I have a plex lifetime account and currently run plex on 1 of my proxmox servers. I want to install plex on my other proxmox server but inside truenas scale. Is this something I can do? I don't want to run them both all the time, I just want to run one as development for the other.
also where can I look to find examples of plex layout?
thx
Hayward
I use a Synology 6 bay that I almost filled up already.
I have an nvidia shield pro that i use for kodi to stream movies from real debrid. My issue is when streaming large files (70gb+) my movies will eventually start stuttering for a split second throughout the movie. Restarting or reinstalling kodi seems to fix it for a while until the stuttering comes back. Any recommendations are appreciated Thanks
Can someone answer a question for an old guy that has archived his collection?
My TV show are in a TV file and each show has its own file , each episode has the show title and episode number
Example
That 70's Show
S1-E3
But only season 1 shows up on my plex server.
What am I doing wrong?
How much does plex cost?
So far I have been unable to get plex media server to automatically update my local guide on my synology server. Yes I have set the "perform refresh of program guide data".😒 A second server on a windows 10 system auto updates without issues.
can you get plex photos to work long-term? i havent found a person that it does work for. ive had a plexpass for years. tried all media server software's over past couple decades. im assuming its working for you. and would like to know your secret.
Hello from a 49" 32:9 monitor.
What would you call a network attached storage that doesn't have a CPU??? Does that even exist? I'm looking for and external storage like device i can plug into the network
Plex has been acting weird for me lately on my PC & the client version on the Shield. On my PC, the server would randomly stop running. Been happening for about 3 weeks now. On the Shield, it would start a Dolby Vision movie in a random place & stutter badly. Strange.
I can be a billionaire and I'll still use plex
What software do you use for ripping CDs into FLAC? Looking for something that will attach album artwork, etc.
Look for Exact Audio Copy...its freeware and has a bit of a learning curve but you can embed the artwork.
I used Emby as their things absolutely hate in Plex like I can not separate my TV/Movie OTA recordings from my Rip DVD recordings and really need M3U Tuner support for HD-PVR 2 device
My TV recordings go to their own directories, which are tied to their own TV Recordings and TV Movies libraries.
@@CantankerousDave Far I know of there no Library for just OTA Recording I should know I req that many years ago and last I check it still not there when I last check which petty much give up on.
I use Plex to stream media downloaded by Sonarr and Radarr totally legal and not completely not illegal
So do you use the Plex DVR to record programs? You said your wife still uses the HD Homerun app and you add that folder to the Plex library.
Please show how to watch an in progress recording from the beginning using the Plex DVR.
Thank you
Why wont movies I put in a collection, stay in a collection?
I wish that downloads was not completely broken. Sync at least functioned at about a 95% capacity. Downloads is just utter trash.
I'm using the Synology DS220J as my server although my libraries are on USB external drives JUST IN CASE my internal hard drives [knock on wood] crash. Even though they're RAID systems, I don't want to take any chances with them.
By the way, I'd given up on WD NAS after it "bricked" because it couldn't support WD OS5.
Anyway, with my ever-expanding library collection I've added a 20TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro to the NAS. However, instead of attaching the HDD directly into the NAS itself I'm using the ORICO 3588US3 docking station and plugging it into the NAS via USB.
So you are a content creator , a father , and yet you still have time to watch plex content . And outside your house...lol
Wow, I'm surprised Lon is running a MyCloud
Why? He's been using one for many years now
@@HChristoph I would think he'd be running a Synology or Qnap server. Also all the hack issues with MyCloud lately seems risky.
@@riopato2009 Agreed, my thoughts exactly
I keep mine locked behind the firewall with no outside access and it’s media only. My synology is used for everything else.
don't upgrade that shield up from the current level you got. 8.31. everyone after that can't play true hd.
Plex is dissiponting, I am a lifetime Plex pass holder, their maintinance of the program guide is terrible. I live in a rapidly changing local Nashville TN and many new stations are coming on air. Plex is totally unresponsive to getting new station added to the EPG. I have filled out their forms numerous time to no avail. If you want to use the DVR as a cord cutter look for another product.
What's your opinion on using plex on a router? RT-AX82U whenever it decides to support WRTMERLIN.
