    A few more recommendations from my experience:
    - If you do have an "extra" SSD, consider making it your dedicated scratch disc to do your transcoding. Transcoding can be very hard on SSDs and it would be better to not put that wear and tear on your primary drive.
    - An Nvidia Shield Pro and a 8-14TB external drive is a surprisingly compact and a relatively cheap starting point. The Shield is still one of the best Plex players, but also makes a surprisingly good server.
    - Synology NAS with Quicksync enabled processor would be the next most compact and efficient storage/server combination while being scalable.
    - Think about your internet upload speed before you get too carried away with how many transcode streams you want to support. Your CPU may be able to transcode 10 but your internet bandwidth may only allow 2-3.

      @@ThatWilsonGuyvids Interesting. All these years and I never gave performance much thought. It's always done what I've asked it to do. When 4K HDR took off and I started adding that content, and when LiveTV and DVR were added, and I jumped on and bought a tuner. Never had performance issues with the 3-5 TVs and several mobile devices attached. The only thing I have problems with is Amazon devices crashing the plex app. Or locking up while fast-forwarding, but from my readings, this is totally just an issue with the Amazon Plex app. And on Roku, PC, and IOS, there are never any issues.

  • @andrewskaterrr
    @andrewskaterrr 3 года назад +12

    Important notes:
    1. Last I checked only Windows supports multicore subtitle encoding
    2. Use software like Macrium Reect Free to backup your Plex drive (mine is all on NVME OS drive so everything is backed up)
    3. GTX/RTX cards have the encoding limit locked so use the unlimited cracked drivers. GTX 1660 has Turing encoder for best quality.
    4. Get better performance and be able to add drives to your Raid array with an Adaptec ASR 71605 Raid Controller with 1GB Ram, battery, and cables for ~$90 on eBay. But strap a 40mm fan to it because it will overheat (it pumps out heat)
    5. Transcoding DTS-HD MA or Dolby True HD audio to when streaming to a device uses quite a bit of CPU, especially during the first couple seconds when it’s loading your videos buffer. If you have over ~8 streams then be sure to get at least a medium level CPU like an R3/5 or i3/5, not an Intel Atom or Pentium.

    • @UnkyjoesPlayhouse
      @UnkyjoesPlayhouse 3 года назад +2

      That's one 1 of the reasons I run Plex under Windows - better performance. You can also use an AMD RX card as it offers great decoding-encoding as well.

      @@UnkyjoesPlayhouse yes but last I checked AMD has still not fixed their x264 encoder, and it looks bad compared to Intel/Nvidia. I originally bought a 2200G and it streams looked terrible. I thought I was bad at nearly $0.19/Kwh. I just created a Raspberry PI 4 to run my Plex Server. Not the fastest thing in the world, but guess what? IT WORKS. We don't stream in 10 areas, matter of fact, I'm about the only person using the server in the family. Regardless, I moved to the PI because of power consumption. Running a desktop machine eating up $0.80 per day in power for something we use once in a while was kind of stupid. The PI eats up like 0.08/day or less.
      Will this work when you have multiple people streaming? Well, at 1080P we can stream two at a time without issue, which would be the MAX ever. MOST of my media is old TV Shows, and older movies that we owned and I ripped to the NAS, so quite a bit of it is 480p, and guess what...I ran 4 streams without a single issue.

    Thanks for the video. I share my Plex server on the same laptop PC that I run the PLEX operating program. I have a 1 TB SSD on a I7 processor with Windows 10. My internet speed is around 250 Mbps. I am a single user and use PLEX to DVD record some local TV Antenna channels that get saved to my MEDIA storage area on my server. So far I have not had any problems doing this. I edit the TV shows and remove the commercials, save it to another EXT hard drive and then remove the original content from the server storage. So another words, I do not store and keep allot of personal content on the server storage area- I have other EXT hard drives that do this. There is no way to record their PLEX movie content or TV shows other than to watch them later. Once I am done watching the movie, etc, I remove it from the watch later function.
    Setup was easy to do for my PC. Only thing I needed to buy extra was the HDHomerun Tuner box and few coax cables. Everything else I already had.
    Overall, everything works great with PLEX and I now have a way to record my local Digital TV channels from my Antenna. Quality of the recordings are pretty good. take care.

Just built a TrueNAS server to replace it and it's a whole different world. Took a while to configure but once it was up and running it's an absolute dream! Budget wise it only cost like $600AUD - a Shield is like $350AUD. Worth the price difference if you can afford it and are up for the tinkering required to get it running. This is just my opinion of course, but at some point you're gonna want to bite the bullet and do it 'properly' - I recommend doing it now - the Shield will be half the budget. Makes a great Android TV box as well though.

    I went the FreeNAS route, but when I built it I didn't even know about Plex..... just needed storage with protection (redundancy). That said, as a non-linux guy..... it's easy to get going but harder to tweak. For example, and this is where I'm stuck (internets no help). I made Plex in the plug-ins and gave myself ownership. Mounted a pool named "Media" for it and have folders for Music, Movies, TV shows...ect in the Pool. My issue is the scheduled back-ups via Plex. I point the back-up directory to "/Media/Plex BACKUPS" so that the back-ups will be in a folder by itself on the media pool...... yet the folder is empty when I open it in win windows (network locations/NAS/Media/Plex BACKUPS". So, while it's nice to have all in one box, having it as a plug in defiantly complicates things if your not a linux guru....

    I notice that all the PMS build guides recommend using an NVIDIA Quadro PXXX card for hardware transcoding. But I've also seen videos and forums saying graphics cards are useless. I have an old GTX660 in my PMS build. I have no idea how to tell if it's being utilised or not without just ripping it out and seeing the difference.
    My question is this... Why the Quadro over other cards? Is my GTX useless in this scenario? Help a sister out.

    • @dustinvanantwerp4917
      @dustinvanantwerp4917 3 года назад

      From my experience, the GTX and the Quadro equivalent work very much the same. For what PMS users use it for (Nvenc) so a GP107 is a GP107 if it's branded as a GTX1050TI or a P400. I've used both for encoding/decoding never noticed a difference. However, I can say. P400 is much cheaper now and has the added benefit of only taking up a single slot.
      The GTX660 does not support Nvenc, see developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-and-decode-gpu-support-matrix-new
      An easy way to tell if Plex is HW transcoding is looking at the dashboard while a stream is running, it will say Transcoding(HW).

    I look at it like this, the new 11th gen intel 730/750 IGP are good enough to transcode a bunch of 1080 streams. Transcoding 4k is a waste of time, even with a p2000. I have been using jellyfin for going on 2 years now, the only thing that is causing me to consider switching to plex is 4k direct play issues on some devices with JF.... also jellyfin stores your metadata on the actual raid array with the media in each media item's folder.. I don't like that plex saves all the metadata to a separate drive. Seems backwards and may be a dealbreaker for me.
