  • Mary T. Meagher, “Madame Butterfly,” was the defending champion. She had not been beaten at an international meet since 1982, and is considered the greatest butterfly swimmer of all-time. Her world record of 2:05.96 in this event, set in 1981, would not be bettered until 2000. Meagher had won the butterfly events at the 1987 NCAA meet and then took a brief retirement, although planning on returning for Seoul. She had struggled a few days earlier in the 100 fly, finishing only seventh, and her form was uncertain.
    The other challengers were the East Germans Birte Weigang and Kathleen Nord. Weigang had won silver in the 100 fly, while Nord was the 1987 European Champion in this event, although she was primarily an IM swimmer, having won Worlds in 1986 400 IM. Weigang started the final at an insane pace, actually being 8/10ths ahead of Meagher’s world record pace at 100 metres. She would have nothing left, stating, “I simply couldn’t pull my arms through the water on the last lap,” although she would hang on for silver. The gold went to Nord, who finished quickly to win. Meagher was third throughout most of the race and that is where she would finish, ending her brilliant career with a bronze medal.

    Mary T. Meagher should have won three gold medals in this event alone. She lost out on her first gold at the age of 15 when the US boycotted the 1980 Games, and in 1988, she had the fastest time in the world heading into the Olympics, only to finish third...behind two East Germans who were a part of the government-sponsored performance enhanced swimming machine. Those who know the history of the sport acknowledge and recognize her status as an all-time great.

      You must be so proud of your Mom! Such an amazing swimmer! I saw her swim in Australia and she was incredible. It was such a difficult time for the athletes of East Germany with their coutnry breaking down and all of the news about steroid use coming into the open. But we know that all of the DDR athletes also trained very hard and most did not know what was happening to them. Please congratualte your Mom from me and say hello from Australia! Richard x

    Her best time would have placed 4th in the 200 fly final in Tokyo won gold at this year’s world championships!

    Seeing Kathleen Nord's reaction to winning was sweet. We all knew since the 1973 World Championships that the DDR was cheating. At the time, I assumed they knew they were being drugged, which we now know isn't true. They believed their coaches who said they were winning because they worked harder than anyone else. The fact that these girls were used as expendable experiments by a wide network of men coaches and officials really makes me mad! Many of the DDR swimmers have had long-term medical problems, I feel sorry for them.

    メアリー・マーハーは、最初の世界記録樹立から9年経っていて、全盛時を過ぎていたのが残念。それでも東独の、ノルト、ヴァイガング、オットー、と比べると、フォームの良さは群を抜いていた。彼女の世界記録が破られたのは、100、200共、この10年以上あとの事であり、彼女は最高のスイマーの一人だと、今でも思う。

    Did OIC conducted any drug test for this event?

    • @Sargebri
      @Sargebri 7 лет назад +5

      They probably did, but the East Germans knew how to cycle their drug used and knew when to stop giving their swimmers drugs so that they wouldn't get popped on a doping violation.

      I suspect the same obstruction of testing could be attributed to the Americans. I'm pretty sure Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky have something up their sleeves. They swim so many events and set numerous records. Their domination is more jaw dropping than anything done by the East Germans!

      Please, take a look at US swimmers in the 90s. Exactly the same look as GDRs. Hence... guess yourself

      @natazeze That's an ignorant comment. Occasional random individuals cheating isn't the same as systematic cheating by an entire country for decades!
