Listening. It was the American Record in the 100 fly for a "get out" swim. She probably doesn't remember because we didn't think she was going to make it... then we thought Denny would change his mind... so we all just ran for the locker room when she finished!!! :) Wonderful job and we had a great weekend celebrating Craig Beardsley's induction into ISHOF. Always great to see T.

So nice to hear the back story of Mary T. As a coach I have always used her videos from the Gold Medal series when teaching my swimmers FANTASTIC butterfly technique. So amazing and beautiful! Thanks Mary T for all you've done, and for the inspiration you still provide. Blessings Aplenty to you and your family.

I am so very grateful for this interview. As a fellow swimmer - who also originally dreamt of competing in the 1984 Games - I could not be happier for you and all of your commitment and adventures! May God bless you both and your families.

Attended her Campbellsville, Ky in 92 and it was a life changing experience. She was so kind and humble. Her speech about going “harder than hard” was a game changer. Taught us about wake up heart rate & swim journals. She even let us hold her medal. The medal looked aged because she allowed everyone in the room to have a moment and dream. I bet millions have held it. What a treat. I was 11.
    Great interview

I am fortunate enough to know Mary T and watch her break those World Records in Brown Deer, WI. She dropped all of our jaws in watching. In previous meets where I attended, Mary T's times were compared to the men's times than the women's. Mary T is a great person as well and this shows through in the interview. Thank Brett!

Great interview, Brett. I don't normally remember things I read 40 years ago, but I remember reading in Swimming World magazine an article about her 57.9 100 fly WR at Brown Deer. It mentioned another swimmer who was on deck at the time of the race. The swimmer said he wasn't paying attention and didn't watch the race, so when he saw the time on the scoreboard he assumed it was a men's prelim swim.

Another fun fact about Mary T is that if not for East Germans, she would have won six gold medals at the 1986 World Championships, beating Missy Franklin to the punch by 20+ years, and she would have also been World Champion in the 200m free.

Thanks so much for this, Brett, and thank you Mary T for sharing your story!
When I was around 10, I went to a Mary T Meagher Swim Camp in Connecticut. This would have been around 1990 or 1991. I remember Mary being very humble, like she is here. But I also remember her seeming down about her Olympic medals, which now makes sense given that this would have been around when she noted that she hit "rock bottom". However, she was very warm and encouraging for us young swimmers. It's great to have so much more context to one of my early swimming memories!

AND no super suit/spanx suit and ONLY two dolphin kicks off each wall. . IMAGINE what her time would have been with extended dolphin kicks and super suit ¨priviledge¨(lol).. Madame B would still have the US and American records even after the recent Regan Smith time June 2023. I swam the 200 fly during this time and you wer IT. It bothers me that Mary T´s name isn´t brought up at EVERY 200 M fly major/national/international event.
