  • After the 1986 World Championships, Bulgaria’s Tanya Dangalakova took a year off from competition, giving birth to a daughter, Anna, born in June 1987. She required further surgery in October 1987, and was hoping just to win a medal in Seoul, as the gold medal in the 100 breast was conceded to East German Silke Hörner, who had already won the 200 breaststroke in world record time, with Dangalakova fourth. In qualifying Dangalakova and Hörner tied for the best time with 1:08.35. Dangalakova realized that the prelims had felt easy and actually predicted that she could break the world record in the final.
That was not to be, but she did win the gold medal. Hörner led the final at 50 metres in world record pace, but Dangalakova was on her shoulder, and the Bulgarian had much more left, coming home for gold in 1:07.95, the second fastest time ever, behind Hörner’s world record. Dangalakova’s teammate Antoaneta Frenkova also finished strongly and passed Hörner for the silver.

Two years before at the World Swimming Championships, Then Tanya Bogomolovia , not sure if last spelled correctly, almost beat Horner in the 200m Breast. Two years later, now Tanya Dangalakova beat Horner here in the Olympic Final. Not really a surprise in this final. Her emotions spilled over after her victory, and she was one of the 3 Women who denied the East Germans total dominance in terms of Gold Medals

She did though defeat the GDR girls the year before the race you mention- the 86 Worlds in Madrid. The year before Madrid, her home country hosted the European Championships in Sofia and her upset over the East Germans in the 200 breast, IMHO, may actually have been an even greater upset than this 100 race in Seoul. Based on two thoughts: first by winning thr race it prevented the GDR from attempting to win every female swim race that year.. also earlier that year, one of those 2 GDR girls she beat in the 85 Championship's 200 breast race and actually the same she beats here Silke Hoerner, swam the ONLY women's world record for '85, dipping under by just several hundredths the 5 yr old former WR set by Lina Kachushite of the Soviet Union in 4/1979.

what a moment for Bulgaria...both gold and silver..Tanya had it tough against the East Germans but she managed together with teammate Frenkeva...also because in breaststroke technique is paramount over strength

Dangalakova annihilated the questionably successful East Germans. She coached me for a few months when I was in year Five at school. Well done, girl!

I remember that race, I was 14yo and thought (among other more swimming-related things) that she was very pretty.
