Ford Ranger Raptor Vs. Wildtrak | DoneDeal Comparison Review | Off Road Pick-Up Truck

  • This week on the DoneDeal RUclips channel we have been set a challenge by Spirit FordStore in Sandyford. They wanted both David OC and Bob Flavin to spend a day in the Dublin/Wicklow Mountains testing both the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and Ranger Raptor.
Both pick-ups are very similar mechanically, they share the same 2.0 diesel bi-turbo 213bhp engine and to the blind eye aren't extremly different visually.
The big differences are all to do with the suspension. The Raptor offers a smoother ride with more ground clearance making it a better choice for an off roading enthusiast, whilst the Wildtrak is better suited to someone who would be putting the SUV to work. It has a larger towing capacity as well as payload.
The two options are great for a buyer who is interested in having a good work vehicle that can also do the school run.
Overall it was a tough decision, and neither Bob nor Dave could agree on which one they would choose, so it begs the question, which would you buy?
    Thanks for watching.

In Australia they have just release the FX4 Max, which is pretty much a cross between the Raptor and Wildtrack... still has the fox shocks, but $12k less than a Raptor

The only reason the tow rating is different is because of the soft plush suspension on the raptor. I've seen the fx4 up close. Totally different suspension. Not on the same page just the same as wildtrak but with slightly better shocks. The raptor is built much stronger in the suspension department. It has to be able to handle Hugh speed off road and jumps.

Before you comment that the 2 litre is not as capable as the 3.2 in towing you should have tested them. Can assure you the 2 litre does a far better job than the 3.2 litre engine.

But the engine apparently has to work 70% harder meaning its longevity is much less than the 3.2. The difference isn't enough to make me be wanting to swap out engines further down the line so it's the 3.2 for me.

Brakes are crap on the wildtrack and are so much better on the Raptor. Wildtrack you will rapidly run out of braking power with a long pedal after a few short straights and even worse when towing. Had a few 3.2 wildtracks and now a raptor and for what I use it for, towing small trailers with race bikes, fishing equipment/ camping etc a far superior vehicle.

One of the biggest misunderstanding about these vehicles if you buy one through the business is you cannot bring the kids to school like the presenter suggests if you tax it as a commercial vehicle. Buy it through the business it has to used solely for the business. The BIK is different also. No driving on Sundays with the family etc. It's a minefield. I know loads do it but if you meet a sticky Gaurd you're in for a hefty bill.

Ireland is an extreme tax society as the welfare state that the government loves to expand is very expensive.
And the irony is the taxes are aimed at every day living that makes it very difficult for the local economy to grow. The Irish international economy is going through the roof and is a shining example.
Most Irish Vehicles are probably 40% international market values.

I had Nissan Navara from new,,don't even go there it came with its own issues from start but thing got me was when it came to servicing it was minimal. These pick ups are built to withstand the rough so ideal on Irish potholed roads. Previous I had cars,,bmw etc and cried when paying for service the amount of broken components needing replacing all from Irish roads ffs. Get a pick up,,Toyota Hilux esp as realible and capable. Sorry guys, but the Raptor is not a commercial vehicle. In order to qualify as a commercial it has to be able to carry ! tonne payload. The soft coil springs rule that out, so VAT can't be claimed back and can't claim running expenses if it's for business use. Also, if they are taxed as commercial vehicles you can't take the kids to school, or anywhere else!

A stock Raptor doesn't actually look good in person. It looks like a person that is holding his poop and walking hardly going to the toilet. While this Wildtrak's has a better stance if you see it on person. And the ride comfort is not that bad, I have a Ranger XLT which is just a few difference from the wildtrak variant and it's comfortable and has a suspension as stiff/smooth as my Honda Civic. Like it's a great all around, anywhere, anytime car. I'd rather get a Nissan Navarra and modify a little bit than getting a Raptor. It's 2.0 bi-turbo engine, injectors and all these electronics issues was the daily issues in my country. It's a buggy car. 2.0 bi turbo sucks.. My Ranger XLT is 2.2, and the other older 3.2 wildtrak runs fine it doesnt suck as the 2.0 bi-turbos.

  • @ElGoogKO
    @ElGoogKO 2 года назад

They cannibalized the Raptor market with the Wildtrack...well, pretty much because the raptor was a scam to start with.
Raptor should have gotten a diesel 3l v6 with over 300 hp to be called a raptor in the first place.
The boing boing suspension isn't used by many primarily. In fact only a handful may do that as a base activity. So the wildtrack is sufficient for most people. Just add a DOOD grille with the optional change of letters, (just like the f150 raptors) and call it a day because it will rarely be used off the road and most likely never in a competitive situation where a Raptor specific suspension is really felt doing it's job vs the wildtrack.
