Man phil Hartman was such a legend.
I'll love to see what he'd be doing today.
Without peer. I still watch Newsradio, with Phil Hartman, Stephen Root, Maura Tierney, Dave Foley, Joe Rogan, Khandi Alexander…what a knockout cast of talent, one of the best sitcoms ever produced (as low as that bar might be).
Mr Smiling, laughing joking around man!! 😂
@@silverXnoiseAgree 💯
I loved him with all my heart.
As a former Marine Drill Instructor, I have to say super props for nailing that salute wearing a campaign cover (smokey the bear hat). It's not easy to touch the bill, you have to practice in the mirror.
Wearing dress greens as a D.I. with the campaign hat--is that correct?
is wearing a lid indoors normal?
Phil's dressed as an Army
drill sergeant, not a Marine drill
instructor.
I actually saw this *before* FULL METAL JACKET, and therefore had to ask myself what self-respecting Georgia town would name itself after the Union's most dreaded Civil War general; I now get the joke.
I'm also sorry the powers-that-be stopped here, instead of giving us an FMJ-themed Pace picante sauce commercial:
[The DIs and recruits are having dinner in the mess hall when GUNNERY SERGEANT HARTMAN calls for more picante sauce; LEONARD "PRIVATE PYLE" LAWRENCE brings him a jar of "El Salsa de Mexico", then is promptly called back. Hartman gets in his face...]
HARTMAN: Private Pyle, does this look like Pace Picante Sauce to you!?
PYLE: Sir; No, Sir!
HARTMAN: You are dumb, Private Pyle, but are you asking me to believe that you didn't know we serve Pace Picante Sauce on a daily basis in my mess hall!?
PYLE: Sir; Of course we do, Sir!
HARTMAN: Well, outstanding! And I'll bet you also know why that is; don't you, Private Pyle!?
PYLE: Sir; I do, Sir!
HARTMAN: [roaring] WHY IS THAT, PRIVATE PYLE!!?
PYLE: Sir; Because Pace Picante Sauce is made in San Antonio, Texas -- with fresh vegetables and spices, by people who know what picante sauce is supposed to taste like, Sir!
[PRIVATE JOKER, who has been sitting nearby, peers at the jar of "El Salsa de Mexico". A look of horror crosses his face...]
JOKER: Sir; It's my duty to inform the Senior Drill Instructor that Private Pyle's picante sauce is made in New York City, Sir!
[All the other DIs and recruits, clearly appalled, jump to their feet in dead sync]
RECRUITS & D.I.S: [save Pyle, Joker, & Hartman; in unison] NEW YORK CITY!!?
[Hartman glares at the jar of "El Salsa de Mexico" which he's been holding]
HARTMAN: Jumping Jehovah's Witnesses...! [He crushes the jar in his hand; then, to Pyle] ...Who's your squad leader, Dirt-bag!?
PYLE: Sir; my squad leader is Private Cowboy, Sir!
HARTMAN: [bellowing] PRIVATE COWBOY!
[PRIVATE COWBOY comes running up from the far end of the mess hall]
COWBOY: Sir; Private Cowboy reporting as ordered, Sir!
HARTMAN: Private Cowboy, you're fired! Private Pyle is promoted to squad leader!
[Cue SCARE CHORD as Cowboy and Joker grip each other in terror, as do all the other recruits -- save Pyle, who swallows hard -- and even the two Junior Drill Instructors]
CADENCE: [from off-screen] Pick up the o-ri-gi-nal / Pi-can-te sauce; Pick up the Pace!
How does that read to you, njaneardude?
That was a hilarious skit. And he kept a straight face. I miss him. RIP Phil Hartman.
They all kept straight faces. Not easy to do when stuff is this funny!
SNL would be so much better today if the actors could 1) keep a straight face and 2) not be obviously reading from queue cards. All of that is happening here flawlessly
@@kraftyDevilX Adam Sandler was the first person I noticed who would frequently laugh during sketches. But at least he attempted to hide it. But Jimmy Fallon ruined SNL, and the ripple effects have lasted for decades. He essentially made it "okay" to laugh during sketches, and he wouldn't even try to cover it. And cast members have been doing it ever since. It's really unprofessional for a performer to laugh during sketches. The audience is supposed to be ones laughing. I can barely take show seriously anymore because "professional" performers seem like amateurs.
@@I_WANT_MY_SLAW Totally agree
he actually cracks a smile at 3:56 but he's too far away and they cut away
I am a Full Metal Jacket fanatic & laughed so hard at this that my stomach hurts 🤣🤣🤣
Man I wish the guy in that movie was in SNL 😭😭😂😂😂😂😂
What makes this funnier was that the DI in FMJ was named Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in the movie.
Watched this as it aired in 1988, and started quoting it with all my friends in high school the next day.
Phil Hartman was a comedy god. ❤
That long ago!?
Absolute genius! Such a sad and tragic loss. How they kept it together with that going on before them is beyond me.
I really miss Mr. Always Hilarious in Every Single Skit He Ever Did Especially The Colon Blow Commercial Guy.
Phil Hartman was awesome...RIP
I have been looking for this skit for YEARS. I loved this when I first saw it. One that my dad and I have quoted many times over the years.
Mr. Smilin', laughin', jokin' around man!
SIR, YES SIR!
I had a Philippine company commander that was just like this guy. He said all kinds of things but we were scratching our heads saying “ what is this guy talking about.” He would say “ if you get your recruit pencil and your recruit notebook and then you put your recruit notebook back…” in the end we would ask our selves “what the heck is he trying to tells us.” He would also make us do exercises that were so easy it was like a vacation from the real company commander that scared us to death.
This is just about the greatest comedy skit I've Ever seen!
In my opinion, Phil Hartman is the greatest Saturday Night Live cast member of all time!
Very possible
Anything with Jan Hook and him is great.
What gives, Cueball? Im looking at you and Im thinking "14 in the side pocket."
“Hair head!” used to crack me up as a kid.
the genius of Phil was he could take any role/sketch, and just by his performance alone, make it funny..this was, at best, a mediocre sketch..but it works cus of him.Still THE greatest SNL performer of all time....
Hartman went all in so he made you feel like you were watching a completely different person
How in the world did he keep a straight face?! What a legend. Thanks to Fly on the Wall for bringing me back here.
Gen Z needs to know Phil Hartman. ♡
Edit: Nealon, Carvey, Miller, and Lovitz were all perfect here, with Modine giving great support.
This scared me like a little scared person
I love the cadence part. "Army army army army army army army!" 😁
Rest In Peace Phil Hartman.
True comic genius taken way too soon. Mathew Modine indicates this was soon after Full Metal Jacket😎😎👍🏻
Amazing movie, too! One of my faves! ☺️
I didn't know Modine ever hosted on SNL. I want to see the rest of the show now
@@ChaosMechanica they are now in season 48. Search for SNL - Matthew Modine. Bet you didn’t know back in the day Both John McCain and Al Gore each starred in episodes they hosted and were in multiple sketches
@@ChaosMechanica idk if he ever did either...and I'm pretty old lol I'll have to look it up.
Yeah, Phil Hartman as Ace London became a spirit of the air.
Matthew Modine from "Full Metal Jacket".
I can honestly say that i miss this man very much. the world is not quite the same without him around.
With such good acting you forget the fantastic writing, even at the start "it will seem as if all the people who are normally around you 'army'"
Good catch! "Army army army army army army army!"
Good thing about this sketch is that Phil is the only one who can't break.
"Feet attached to legs" lmao I sure hope so 🤣
Phil Hartman very much showing us how it’s done. F’ing legend.
Always glad to see genuine vintage content. Phil was just wonderful in this sketch. Perfect timing, phrasing, everything. How I miss him.
Jon Lovitz was something else back in the days.
Yeah, he was no Albert Schweitzer back in the day. But then again, how could he be. He was someone else. He was Jon Lovitz.
All the legends of comedy. All in one place. I think they had not heard the nicknames before.
I remember this episode when it first aired. I loved Phil, he always made me laugh. I was so saddened when I found out he was killed by his wife.
Phil Hartman was the best...this was my SNL...and he stood out from Day One.
The singing at the end sounded like a Cab Calloway song lol
@@TheGollyLlama Yup!
@@TheGollyLlama Hm...I wonder if anyone on the SNL set does that to Heidi Gardner?🤔
@@TheGollyLlama Sorry, I don't quite follow you there?
@@TheGollyLlama Lol. A valiant effort nonetheless! 😆
Rest in powerful peace

Phil was amazing 😢
One the best skits ever😭
Phil Hartmen was amazing. The tragedy of losing him is honestly not right. He is one of the best actors that will be truly missed. RIP Mr. Hartman.
I miss Phil Hartman so much. He is still the gold standard for sketch comedy, movies, and everything! One of my favorites was Phil in the Chris Rock movie *CB4.* RIP 🙏
Yes and the the 4d break the fourth wall comedy satirizing the rap and hip hop scene of the time, with Chris Elliot obsessively filming them the whole time. Great cast and definitely Chris Rock's best piece, ahead of it's time
Yeah, Phil Hartman as Ace London became a spirit of the air.
I've searched for this video periodically for years now.... *Very* happy to get to relive it at last! I love Phil Hartman and miss him so much.
Me too, glad it's finally here!
Agree! It was SO depressing to just see all the other less funny SNL drill seargent bits (of which there are quite a few).
Phil Hartman will forever be the legend the goat master impressionist/full of characters. From Saturday night live, movies . And television
Thank you SNL for this gem of a skit. But of course all of Phil Hartman skits are gems.
Good touch having Matt Modine in the line up as well
He actually would have made a pretty good drill sergeant
Brilliant! Although at the end he could’ve said:
LIVE FROM THAT BIG CITY PLACE THAT’S IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK, IT’S THE NIGHTTIME OF THAT FIRST DAY OF THE WEEKEND!!!
R.I.P Phil Hartman
I have looked for this sketch on YT for years!!!
I can finally die happy!
Same! You remind me of my doggie!
Aaaaaaa...
Rmyyyyyyy!
😂😂😂
Phil Hartman will always be Capt. Carl to me. Thanks for posting this.
Phil was incredible talent R.I.P.
Phil was an absolute dedicated craftsman. Legendary
Mr. Eyes-in-face man! 😂 I can't 🤣🤣
Just ONE more thing.. Having been in the Army and watching this epic SNL classic brought stiches to my sides.. Just plain funny comedy. We can look back at this and see how our world has changed..and not for the better. Thank you for reminding me what funny is..
Have you seen the one from Drill Sergeant Suel 😅 ruclips.net/video/I8CxEPg2cpQ/видео.html
Not yet!!😆
What exactly has changed not for the better? Because you wish the Army was still like this, or because Phil died, or ...?
@@ichoudhury007 Hilarious!!
@@JakeAviator Look around.. Today everyone is "Offended" about everything.. Yes things change, I get it. I grew up in the 60's and 70's. So my outlook may be different than yours, which is ok. When SNL first aired, no Saturday Night was over until this show was watched. This is just my humble opinion.. By the way. When I was in the Army, it was hands on. Our D.I. kicked our ..., 25/8, but then we expected it. No calling mommy or daddy. You sucked it up, and in 3 months you were brand new.
4:33 Foreshadowing Hiking With Kevin.
Maybe put "vintage" in the title. All these guys were fantastic. Miss them on SNL, though SNL is still great with their present cast. Cheers!
One big joke building 😂
This makes me wish I'd known about this skit before enlisting in the army. It would have been hilarious to start this cadence while in AIT.
Only Phil Hartman could have made this work!
I still say "Mr Smilin', laughin' jokin' around man" to people to this day
This video was funny, I guess I'll call it... Mr. Funny Making Me Laugh Video
Man!
omfg...and matt modeine is there!
Hartman also name dropped Ermee in the end. Lee Ermee played his drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket.
He was actually such a great actor.
Taken too soon!!! Rest Easy Mr. Hilariously Funny Man on SNL!!! 😜💜🤗
From Phil Hartman, a cool cold open… legend!
Social Anxiety > Vocabulary
Could you guys release the Rick Moranis one with him as Merv Griffin working at Trump Castle? One of the lost great ones.
Phil Hartman was one of the best SNL cast members of all time.
Y'all can upload old skits randomly like this, then y'all can upload the giant lobsters attacking the cast, crew and audience from the Robert Klein episode in the 1970s. Somebody there knows what I've talking about. PLEASE. Shit was unhinged. Saw it on a VHS tape a few years ago. I want everyone else to see it, too.
There are more sketches on their website, have you checked there?
Watch the full episode. DVD, Peacock, other sources... You really need the whole plot line, not just the end of the show.
I have peacock..every episode ever..(tho due to copyrights music edited out)
@Douglas Lowe Not for the first 5 seasons.
@@bleepiestofbloops I did watch the whole episode. Like I said, it was on a VHS tape.
A silly, nonsense skit handled brilliantly by Phil Hartman. The man could do anything.
I miss Mr Hartman. I also laughed at Kevin Nealon failing to keep a straight face. I see this aired in 1988, the year I was born. I wonder if this was before after September.
November 5, 1988
~ Matthew Modine / Edie Brickell
The Marine in me Keeps seeing these Army Ranks and Army Base while using a Marine title (Senior Drill INSTRUCTOR) instead of Drill Sgt which the Army uses. Laughed my face off at the skit, tho. Great job!
I know this is like my third post but thank you gentlemen for the cold open there I really do appreciate that I was actually starting to have a bad day there in that brighten me up significantly so thank you for the cold open presentation
Wow it is really amazing how they stay in character. Especially the part where Phil Hartman is yelling in Dennis Miller's face saying "That's your new name, Mr. The guy I bet is a homoSEXUAL." That's what killed me the more, the fact that Dennis keeps a straight face.
Based on the beginning of "Full Metal Jacket,"set in a Marines boot camp, The guy who played the drill sergeant had really been Marines drill argent, so he. Knew all sorts.of clever insults to give to his men. This guy didn't
LMAO! Hell yes I loved this ! LOL
Seeing this from my viewpoint of a military veteran, that was really well done- nostalgia triggered!
Plus, it was spot-on, and really freaking funny!
Reminds me of my basic training. RIP Phil Hartman
So sad that we lost Phil Hartman in such a violent and cruel way. A true talent.
Got real "Full Metal Jacket" vibes watching this..
I think the guy who played Einstein was in Full Metal Jacket.
You got the vibes of the thing it was referencing?
@@Ginsu131 What I meant was that is that they did a great parody of that part of the movie. Also, if used that term incorrectly it was bcuz I was taking the piss for people who constantly use that expression..
I didn't realize that's Matthew Modine at first.😂
I was with my family in Naples Florida on vacation, I distinctly remember being with my son in the hotel gym, on the treadmill, CNN was on the big screen TV on the wall in front of me when they announced that Phil Hartman was murdered in his sleep by his wife who shot him multiple times. RIP Phil.
I guess this wasn't analogy or metaphor boot camp.
I've been looking for this sketch for years.
0:41 you can see the mic at the top right corner of the screen lmao
I remember watching this live with my cousin who was leaving for army basic training the next week. All he could do was shake his head.
That was Joker at the end from Full Metal Jacket.
Yes...and that was a good movie.
It just hit me at 2am and I had to come back and comment this. They did a full metal jacket parody, and they got Phil Hartman to play drill instructor Hartman(n). Fucking genius move.
Now that is an actual cold open. I find the political stuff gets old after awhile & sketches like these are the funniest in my personal opinion.
Its like a business meeting at work!
Phil Hartman was great in Bilko, but skit was blah…even the audience barely snickered. 😞
How is it that nobody is mentioning Matthew Modine from Full Metal Jacket playing the recruit. Hartman got him to break character a couple of times 😂😂
Matthew Modine's like: "Here we go again"
One of the best to ever do it! Hilarious!
Modine almost losing it - hilarious. I mean, Phil, the Glue Hartman is yelling comedy in your face - I would've lost it.
Why are they calling their Drill Sergeant "sir"? This is suppose to be the Army right? And not the Marines???
Fun Fact: The shortest guy in my Basic Training company was named Frye.
Did you call him small Frye or Mr. Shortest guy in Basic Training company?
You're not a Futurama fan?
He nailed it 👏 👌 they were not in step at the end lol 😆
These were my years.
It took me probably 20 times in my life watching this sketch to notice....
MOCHA JOE!!
If you know you know.
You know he thinks of clever things he could've said while he's trying to fall asleep
Can’t believe private Joker was able to keep a straight face
He is actually very intimidating as a DI. It would be hard to remember and recite those nicknames with a straight face.
Hair head! I love calling people that.
Phil Hartman was great
David nebel was here
