    I am going to try out your dandelion-planting scheme. Normally, I don't start things before April, and I have a pretty reliable planting guide that I have developed over the years. But it is always nice to try something new.

    Great information! I live in a similar climate (long winters) except its high altitude, low rainfall climate in Colorado. Your common sense, low budget way of gardening is so my jam. I also love your recipes and cooking videos. Thanks for all you offer to the backyard gardeners.

    Thank you for this incredibly valuable information and what a brilliant strategy for figuring out the best time to plant seeds. My husband and I just moved from British Columbia where with the exception of maybe two or three months you can always have some thing growing in your garden. Growing season in Cape Breton and the climate here is so drastically different than British Columbia so I look forward to watching more of your videos. 😊❤

    I have high hopes for this gardening season with all the snow cover we’ve had. I also wait until April for my tomatoes, will start peppers probably during March break.

    This winter has been weird. About a month ago I saw a dandelion flower and some wild strawberries flowering, then we got a big freeze. I'm looking forward to your 2024 garden videos. 🎉

    This is really a good guide in a normal year. Here in Hamilton we have had almost no winter. So crazy as it may seem, I planted seeds outside in the last few days. I used some of my older seeds, of the early peas, spinach turnip and broccoli, so it wasn't much of a risk, and the ground is completely diggable with only a crust of ice in the mornings.
    I fully expect that now that I've done that we should get hit hard with winter storms in March. But last year my garden had green growth through much of winter. This year there virtually has not been any winter except in spurts. I wonder what your take is on how to adjust to the changing climate.

      "I wonder what your take is on how to adjust to the changing climate."
      That's why I go by the dandelions instead of calendar dates.

    I’ve been pushing earlier and earlier with my peppers, but it’s also because I cut back very aggressively several times indoors, to maximize branching and ultimately keep the pepper plant lower to the soil (for heat and avoiding wind). I’m also planting out peppers at least a month ahead of you because of your frost curse.

    Great video and great timing. Totally agree with not starting things too early - although I push the season a bit by covering my beds with hoops and plastic. When I saw your video I had finished setting up a shelving unit in my south facing window and sorted my seeds. I label them on the bottom back with the year I purchased them and sort by type where type relates to when they are planted. After I finish watching your video I’ll be starting parsley, rosemary, peppers, and onions. I’ll be changing to the baggie method for the peppers - thank you for that tip. I’m fortunate and have a small lean-to greenhouse up against a south back door and I transplant the peppers at least once so they can live in the greenhouse before I put them in the ground. Regarding seed starting I use promix to start seeds and the make my own mix for transplants with compost, vermiculite, promix, and I reuse soil as well. I buy a bale of promix every two to three years. Lol this is the first winter video I’ve seen where you have more snow than NW Ontario.

      We had snow like this more often when I was young - but its pretty rare now. Last good winter I recall was 2015.

    No snow here. I'll be pruning my blueberries and cleaning up my strawberries tomorrow in mid 50's F warmth. I'm surprised you start your peppers the same time I do and I put mine out in mid May. I'm also trying overwintered peppers this year. I trimmed a couple back last year and put them in small pots with some potting mix and they've been sitting in my cold garage all winter. Not sure how they will work out but it's an experiment. Hopefully they'll give me an early start.

    LOVE the Dandelion System. I am going to slightly "borrow" it.
    Our schedules are slightly off. My last frost date, averages about a month before you. But otherwise, the system works.

    Hey! I love your videos, I’m learning a lot. I live on the south shore of NS and I’m wondering how much of a jump on the season I can get. What if I have a small (6x8) heated greenhouse, row covers and frost cloth. I haven’t set up the hoops for the rows yet but I have started some seeds 😬 I’m worried I started too soon, I thought our last frost date was April 1st! I’m only growing cool annual flowers right now fyi

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887  4 месяца назад +1

      You can do a lot with a small (6x8) heated greenhouse, row covers and frost cloth. As a rough rule - everything can go ahead of schedule according to my "dandelion" schedule - such that the dandelion yellow things can go out during "dandelion green" under cover, and the "dandelion white" things can go out during "dandelion yellow" under cover,

      Things are going well and I haven’t lost anything planted so far. I’m putting my dahlias out this weekend, uncovered, and I’m guessing they qualify as a potato on your guide as it’s the tuber that can’t freeze. What’s the * for beside potato on your chart? Thanks!
