  • In this video I show how I use the "baggie" method to get seeds germinated prior to placing them in seed trays.

I wish I had learned this last year. You just answered all of my "What did I do wrong?" questions. This year I will follow your lead, and hopefully have some success. Thank you.

Usually I mix my own seed-starting mix, but this year I ran out of peat moss. Knowing that peat has environmental issues, I started looking around for alternatives. So far, the bagged stuff I bought as an alternative has failed me completely.
But, I've also started playing around with cold-processed, sifted compost from the garden and excellent results with: peas, kale, favas, garbanzos, spinach, lettuce, green onion. Right now I'm trialing some solanums side by side, compost and traditional bagged seed-starting mix, to see if there is really any difference.
The only bummer thus far is that the compost is full of critters. i think I've devised a plan to evict them prior to bring it in the house for seed-starting purposes. :)

Yes sir , reusable containers and paper towel . Cost nearly nothing and works great . I set mine on top of the hot water heater where its always slightly warm and they pop fairly quickly. Happy growing season ! 😎👍🫑🌶🍅🧄🧅

Oh I forgot to mention - I like to use a clear bottom container , put the seeds straight onto the bottom , cover with one sheet of PT - this lets me see the seeds clearly and quickly just by looking at the bottom side of the container and the roots don't try to poke through the paper so much . Cheers.

To sterilize the soil, I add boiling water to the seed starting mix. I let the soil cool before I plant the seed. As questions: do you put the sprout down in the soil? How deep do you plant the seed? What’s your success rate? What’s the easiest seed to germinate? What’s the hardest seed to germinate?

Thanks. Some seed packets are not just expensive, but have shockilly few inside., e.g. 12 ! I bought stevia seeds with only 5.
I am just as amazed by the ammount of seeds provided for some perenial vegetables, e.g. 2,000 seeds for perenial spinach.
Good luck, and try some glasses. They let you see a lot more detail when you need it.

I germinate my seeds in little containers too. I hate wasting plastic bags. I use a china wax marker to label my container and it wipes off easily with a dry paper towel. Several years ago I found some salad dressing containers at the dollar store. They work great as little germination pods. I put them next to a heater for heat loving seeds. Works great for tomato, pepper & squash seeds. The squash seeds generally go straight to the garden as soon as the seed coat cracks.

Great! Thanks Greg. I've just started doing this cz i had seeds that needed to go in the fridge before they'd sprout. Good to know I can do it with other seeds too - that don't need the cold start
Autumn here in NZ & I'm about to get some brassicas going

    Hey Greg
Excellent video...yep Peppers are definitely the worst at germinating in my seed pots! Will give this a shot, I have always put 3 seeds in every cell and then just hoped at least one sprouts!
Never had any problem with tomatoes or pretty much anything else!
    Great video...Cheers

Very helpful. I'm going to try this but wouldn't it be easier to wet the paper strips before putting them in the container? That way you can avoid having to drip water in using a spoon. Just a thought that came to me as I was watching the video

Only way I have started seeds this year and no more guessing, started fennel bulb, radishes and turnips like this today. Peas may have been the only one that got confused, I put the sprouted seed in their seed tray and a week later it seemed like the seed was at the bottom, digging their way to China haha

All of them? You're not that far north (from my point of view as a canadian). I think there's all kinds of things you can direct seed - and many things will actually perform better if you direct seed them.

Awesome suggestion. I currently have trays where 1/2 of the cells are germinated, but not the others. I’m going to give your method a try and see what happens.

From what I've read lavender seed needs 'cold stratification' before sowing and then pretty cool soil temperatures, 60-70°F for best germination results.

@@davec1117I’ve done some more research and you’re right my heat mat must be too warm, I have cold stratified my seeds for 3 weeks and will try a new batch and see what happens, thanks for the advice!

Thank you for this tip! I am trying it for the first time right now. Is it okay for me to place the containers directly on my shelf that is in my window? I have covers on them, as you recommended. I get sun for the first few hours in the morning. I am using regular white paper towel, not the brown stuff. Are these things okay? Thanks, again! 🙂

Do you use this method for onion seeds? They seem small and I am not sure how you would get them off the paper so just wonder if you have had success with them. Thanks.

Here in Newfoundland having a lot of misses with onion seed so today my last attempt - I soaked the seeds for 24 hour then laid the seeds on damp soil in the seed pot and just laid a piece of toilet paper on top and spritzed it wet into a plastic ziploc by the woodstove
