Thank you all so much for supporting my channel! Check out the AMS Neve 1073 SPX here: sweetwater.sjv.io/9gEOj5
Nice video! I saw that you also have a Shelford Pre. Can you obtain the same kind of sound when using the silk option or is the Neve SPX that unique?
Bought that Neve 1073 spx and don’t regret it one bit 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I totally understand why, lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Great job on the shootout against Cole on the Sweetwater Rig Builders! I voted for you because the simplistic way that you used the LA-2A and the 1073 to achieve sonic greatness coupled with the Telefunkin, made her vocals sound pristine and dynamic. You're repping your brand well @archiebeatz
This is the video we've all been waiting for, for years
could you review the Bae 1073
Loved seeing you on the RIG BUILD video at Sweetwater with Colt. Both of your rigs were wonderful, but your sound was a bit rounder and earned my vote, but it was a close match.
Hi David! Thanks David. It was fun. Colt is a very talented and gifted dude. I really appreciate this.
didn't know you could use your beard as a pop filter
Hey Archie, Thanks for the video. I recently got this bad boy for my setup. I would be grateful if you could make an in depth video on how to use the EQ section on this thing to get that modern mid heavy hip hop vocal sound. Thanks man. God Bless!
Great Video, and I really enjoy your content at SweetWater with Rig Builders. You got my vote, Atlanta baby.
Thanks brother. I really appreciate it man... Yes sirrrr!!!!
I’ve had the 1073DPX for a few years now. Love it
Nice!!! I'm glad you are enjoying it!
Have you checked different types of Pop filters ? I seem a Video last week where the one you use is too Thick. Stedman is great the Gader GM pop Filter is unbelievable for sweet water price 24.99. Hopefully you do a Show on Pop-filters if you Haven't already. I couldn't believe how pop filter can rob your Vocals a little
Do you use Mogami cables all throughout your hardware form mic to pre to pre to compressor??
Mogami is at least 95% of all my cabling.
Personally I think the great river is way better than the Neve 1073s especially when stacking
Saving up right now for a 1073 SPX! But also looking into a slightly cheaper alternative like the Rupert Neve 511 or SSL 500 series. Any advice on how to get a WARMER vocal chain?
I currently run my Lauten Audio Atlantis or my TLM 103 into my Apollo Twin X (Avalon737 Unison), and it sounds good on my crispy voice, but I wanna FATTEN the signal some. Any Advice appreciated as I’m currently stuck in the PREAMP RABBIT HOLE 😂
Hey what's up man? Nice. The Neve 511 are nice but with this chain setup, I would warm it up with a optical tube compressor at the end of your chain. You could even hit the UA apollo console software with a Tubetech C1B plugin on the insert. NIce setup btw. Hahahahaha, I see. It happens. I hope this helps tho.
@@archiebeatz I currently go 1176 + 2A at the end. Again very CRISPY but I need that WEIGHT! Lol appreciate the response I’ll watch your channel 4 Life!
Yessir!!!!!!!!!! Neve is always king!
Would you recommend cutting the eq on and playing with those frequencies?
can u please make a video of showing how to plug in the analog and combine it with the chain in the daw? i would appreciate it alot. god bless
Brown Edward Lewis Christopher Davis Dorothy
What’s the best settings for vocal recording.
My signal chain is Neve 1073 to warm audio wa2a comp to Apollo x8
Honestly, you have to use your ears. I would have the preamp at a good level on it's own and tame/shape transients with the WA2A... I hope this helps.
What’s your take on newton or shellford channel do you recommend either of them ?
The 1073 SPX is good, but not 1:1 authentic. If you want a 1073 that sounds most like Vintage Modul, then you need to buy the 1073 Classic (handwired), (and I'm not talking about the Neve 1073N) with an 80's Series chassis. The 1073 Classic + 80's Series Chassis costs around 5k.
How much of a difference is there honestly cause one is 1.8k one is 5k plus like you said can this version still get the job done well for someone with a less budget?
That is a waste of time and money. The maintenance and repairs far outweigh the fact that’s its vintage. If you want something nearly 1:1 identical to the original, and it’s hardwired with original components, get a BAE 1073 EQ. BAE makes better units than neve right now.
So happy I bought one it’s amazing, my vocal chain is almost complete
NICE!!!!! I'm glad you are loving it!
What else do you need to finish your chain?
@@fantaztikbeatz at the time I only had a Neve 1073 and a Tube Tech CL1B but I needed an upgrade from my Neumann TLM 193 Microphone. Last month I decided to purchase a Launten Audio Eden LT 386 and I'm satisfied with my decision, a Sony C800g and 251E are not in my price range at the moment but eventually one day I might go for one of them.
After the heritage, where then are you going is it through some type of interface?
Bro how is the combo ? I'm thinking on tubesessor?
Yo Archie! Just wanted to say I think you won the sweetwater challenge :)
Yooo! That would be dope, lol.
Id love to hear this various stages of gain in the preamp knob, man.... It would be awesome to hear this thing cranked up to finally hear it's drive as it is ✌🏻
Currently have the RND Newton Channel… but it’s sounding a bit cold/digital. Sad to say I’m disappointed…
Would you suggest a Neve1073 or BAE 1073 would give a thicker/warmer tone?
Bae
@@MaliciousBeats ended up getting the BAE and DAMN it’s nice
You got the Image 2 speakers ?
Hahahaha! I do. I just dropped the video like 20 secs ago, lol. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/4wvhofKCtj4/видео.html
im not jealous. i love my vocal chain. i was trying to get this first before i got the 737... but getting this from the sweetwater build my rig contest for free is such a W.
A 737 is another solid channel strip, did you get a separate compressor?
@@scarteca yeah i have a distressor that i use as an opto tube compressor. telefunken tf51 mic
@@FromTheHippthat’s 🔥🔥🔥distressor always comes in clutch
Lol, I understand. The 737 is a hitter for sure. Yeah, I was actually about to purchase the BAE 1073 to have a solid 1073 style unit with my Neve 5211 & UA 6176 but there isn't a need now. I originally purchased the Neve 5211 with Red Silk maxed out to emulate the 1073 and have more versatility. This totally worked out, lol.. Thanks for commenting and I want to hear what you did with the Avalon.. It's a TRUE BEAST!
@@archiebeatz finishing up my album so i'll plug you in once its finished. keep winning my guy.
clear and sounds like a pro
Thank you!
Love your videos you’ve helped me learn so much
This is why I do this. I'm glad I can help!
My favourite preamp of all time. I did about 3 weeks of overtime to be able to afford one. I then had to wait over a month for them to make the next batch but it was worth the wait!
I have x8p and u87 which pre amp would you suggest me ?
I would definitely rock with the Neve 1073, WA-73 or Rupert Neve Design 5211. I own all of them and they are rock solid as a preamp paired with my U87 Ai. This combo works with pretty much everything. I hope this helps.
What does class A electronics mean?
Do you record dry, then apply the EQ on the neve? Or EQ while recording? Seems like the EQ is basic on the neve, and that an EQ in your DAW is better?
That output level actually goes through a transformer and apparently you're meant to have it up high with the input gain feeding in a bit lower to get the intended sound.
You sure so have the red knob set lower if using mic and turn the level all the way up
@@breadmakingplays716 Yeah, from what i've seen, have the trim up, red input knob down, and then increase the red knob and lower the trim to balance them to taste.
People tend to only use that trim knob thinking its a clean output. As a result they have more of the input transformer and hardly any of that output transformer in their signal.
I haven't personally done this because I don't have one and plugins don't model it. So mind you, i'm not talking from experience - just info i've found. There's people making videos on it too.
After using the classic and the N version for a few years, I would say the sound sculpting ability is soo great that you just need to experiment. In use, it feels and sounds like the balance act with its tones brings in harmonics in both directions soo I ended up getting started with half of the gain and using trim to flavour more.
how are we supposed to balance the red line knob vs the gray line knob?
Thank you
Is it possible for a video tutorial how to connect the Neve 1073 eq with the audio card and explain all the buttons?
Could you do video using the Slate Mic into the Neve going into the MBOX Studio? Not sure if you still have them but I seen you review them and I have slate mic and Mbox studio and just wanna know if it’s worth getting the neve
Neve 1073
True enough, much love but not the hand wired more loved from the day
I find the Bae closer to original neve then the newer actual neve ams
After the Neuman Mic we go into the neve, then to the compressor.. and if i want to add an cloudlifter should it put it after the compressor & then into an apollo interface as example?
I’m looking to get started with using analog gear for my pre amp. I currently use digital preamps with universal. But I want to build a rack. But I don’t know where to start.
Check out the Stam Audio SA 1073EQ+MK2 preamp. It's basically an identical clone of the Neve 1073 all the way down to the Sowter output transformer, but at a fraction of the price of the Neve.
Why hasn’t anyone done a review on the Avalon v5?..🤷🏾♂️ do one…
Curious though, do you have two beasties for stereo
I went Bae but could only swing one box due to the obvious $$$$ issue
Bought this preamp from sweet water but unfortunately, haven’t put it to use yet!
Dude. Let me know when you set it up and thoughts.
@@archiebeatz I will be letting you know for sure!
@@daviekaymusic8987what’s your ig? i would love to here abt ur experience with it
How does the HA73EQ compare to this? ...
Great voice.
Thank you! I really appreciate it.
Awesome video per usual Archie!! Do you use the -10db setting on your U87 by chance? I have the same mic and pre as you and that seems to work well for my signal. Thoughts on this?
I would love to hear an AB of this and their pricier hand built 1073's on drums would be great.
I love your review archi but what would make this the review of neve 1073 review of the year is if you had record multiple vocalist through this so we could hear the various nuance of this preamp.
definitely a fav of mine next to the chandler Redd
Love the battle with you and Cole!
Thanks brother!
Just bought a pair of them last week, getting delivered tomorrow.
Alctron👌
I have to check them out!
I dont own a ams neve ...but i do have a RND 511 and Heritage audio ha73... love those pre amps... a c414 xl 2 through a neve is straight butter. Highly recommended.
Hey man! Which one do you prefer for vocals? The RND or the Heritage?
I Have a Question: Do you know how to use the EQ ONLY when you want to PRINT a track on your session. I'm using the Apollo Twin MKII with the spx
You need to send a signal back out to the neve then back into your DAW.
@@anthonyrock5039 thanks
still trying to figure out if its better to have the gain high and level down or the oposit
High in order to get more sound of the circuit (the trim used just to control signal clipping) vs low level and high trim to have a clean sound. You will have the most control over tone if you have an analog mixer between the unit and your daw.
is the insert in out for external compressor or fx to be used?i am ordering this item..so can i use my fmr really nice compressor on those insert points?
You can have absolutely anything in between
How to connect this preamp to a computer?
Either order with the digital card installed or use any digital interface.
I have a Avalon 737 but I'm not obtaining the texture for smooth vocals. Thinking about making a switch.
Maybe a mic change...? What do you use now?
UA87@@galgogergo
your vocals sounded really dope bro
Hi! Does the line part of the knob add and subtract gain from line signals?
Mic in one direction the line in the other.
@@anthonyrock5039Thank you
I love them. However, how different is it to the warm audio version?
You want the Heritage Audio neve clone. Trust me.
