+geese you clearly don't know anything about cars. He's not smiling "like if..", he actually gained AT LEAST 15hp with this + 15hp for the red calipers but if you do both you actually get +50hp total...MAAAD!
***** damn be MCM, I'm pretty sure they tricked us into this red, aggressive, Ferrari-like color so they could keep that yellow secret for themselves...I'll go buy yellow paint and put it ON TOP OF THE RED ONE! Pretty sure that's an extra combo level which triples your hp gain :P
its actually not that simple. +50hp plus when you paint both rocker cover and brake calipers is only when you paint them red. Other colors will add just 30hp, tho coloring them using plastidip doubles that. Also painting it like the Rising Sun flag gives you 100 extra horses.
I feel like this was one of the few mods they did to this poor Civic that wasn't 100% troll.

11 years ago, when I had my first car, I used to watch MCM to do some upgrades, such as the all so useful push to start ignition, adding some HP by spray painting the calipers and so on. Today, I am still watching MCM videos to restore the rocker cover for my 1990 Hilux!
Nice vid. It is possible to use vaseline on the logo to prevent the paint from adhering then when you're done, just wipe it away. No filing necessary :)

Did this to my Prelude but used a sanding block instead of a file. Turned out beautifully. Easy to get an even finish on the logo.

You forgot to mention to put sealant on the gasket otherwise it will have oil leak. Also it's best to bake the rocker cover in the oven for the paint to harden.
Good points. I put mine in the oven on 400 for about 20-30 minutes. I also used gasket sealant on the corners.
Gotta say I love seeing how far you've come, but at the same time these old school cheap ass DIY videos take me back to when I didn't know a thing about cars and would watch these to learn.

i did this step by step and it looked amazing at the end on my 1992 Honda accord. used a hot-rod red

Red gives the most.

@mattcolorz They made this video before the final battle. If you noticed in the honda civic video the valve cover is already red. Meaning they painted it before they made that civic video which was before the final battle.

@mattcolorz this video was made before they sold the s15, they just uploaded it now. Because if you notice, the honda civic video had the cover painted in red already.

I think it's great that you guys are doing thoroughly detailed work with your notible expertise. Also, it's even better that you guys are using an underrated great tuner car, that I will luckily inherit once I get my liscense. The model I am inheriting is a '94 Civic EX, which I know is very similar to your Civic model.
@TheNizzmo If you have a manual, and you mean when you put your foot down the revs jump up and 'hold' for a moment then drop back down as the car speeds up and then continues to climb with the car as it normally would. I'd say you're clutch is due for replacement. My rex did that. If felt like driving an auto with a high stall converter. New clutch and it was good to do though.
The best way to get the paint off of the letters is to use a stick of lip chap. Spread it over the letters before painting. Once it's dry just pick the paint of the letters, easier than using a file and risking scratching the newly painted surface.
That was an awful lesson. You guys didnt even remove the original wrinkle paint.

Thats an alright way of painting your valve cover if your in the backyard and your a do it yourselfer, however I would just powder coat it a lot easier and dont have to worry about paint peeling cuz their is no paint lol, but keep in mind you get what u pay for so not everyone can powder coat. cheers.

Its a valve cover gasket and grommets, yeah I would definitely change them while they're off most over long periods of time they start cracking. Easy as hell to do and cheap.

@mattcolorz if you watch the civic video they made it had the red rocker cover so it means they made this before it was sold.

It is the gasket. It can stick a bit but just give it a good yank and it will come off. Also replace the gasket :)

you can see the old paint especially where it chipped and flaked off thats how.
Pro tip: Aircraft aluminum paint stripper, once you got clean alloy, get it POWDERCOATED. Then, it will truly be a job well done.

diesel bath the rocker cover makes cleaning it 10 times easier, u only need like 5 liters at best and a tub

I did my rocker cover different to that.. I used paint stripper and sanded it all back to smooth.. Then couple of sprays BLAAACK then a clear coat. :)
'Next time' is such a tease, but was that a roof respray I saw? PLEEAASE show that one next! I have SOOO much clear coat damage on my roof.

No. In OHC engines the camshafts operate the valves directly.
im gonna get a r34 with lime green and carbon hood and trunk so will a lime green cover with the rest of the engine chrome look cool?

I have a 2004 Chevy Impala and have big plans to modify the interior look.
I would like to know if I can replace my power buttons on the door with new and sleeker looking buttons.
Are most of them universal? (because most of them tilt up and down, click side to side etc.)

It might have been worth mentioning that when you take off the leads, yiu should note which spark plug they were connected to. On some cars the cable length doesn't make it obvious... And putting them back on in the wrong order = nightmare.
When I first took my cover off my '91 Toyota Tercel, it was completely covered in a mess of paint/rust/corrosion. After a major FUCKton of sanding/going over w/ wire brush, i have 95% of it down to bare metal, with the crevices still a bit corroded. Am I fine to paint it like that, or do I have to the whole cover absolutely clean? Cause I've been scrubbing for a while, and I'm starting to get tired. I've been told stories that enamel paint wont stick to corroded surface

You're probably talking about the Fuel Rail Covers. You can paint those too, just find the right paint.
PROTIP: chapstick/vasaline the logo's before painting then wipe off easily after painted for a clean easy job with no filing or sanding

Okay i admit i was a little mistaken, but OHC engines can either operate the valves with rocker arms or without. And how could the lifter fly out of the engine when the camshaft is in on the way?

I don't know...sometimes the things they do seem very well done. In this case it's just aesthetics. And i know it's a need, but really, cleaning that rocker cover inside would of had made the job so much more pleasing.
Why didnt you strip the paint back? Use paint stripper and you'll get a much better finish or you could polish it while the paint has been removed. (thats what alot of the guys with VLs do and it comes up really good)

What if you've got VVT/VTEC? I've got an NB8B MX5 with VVT and it looks like it'd be more complicated to take the rocker cover off without fucking with the cam controller/actuator thing.
Vtec solenoids aren't mounted to the cover of D, B or H series

can i use any anti rust paint on my engine head, like a tiffinay blue - rustoleom spray paint, then coat it with a high tempurature engine paint?

Replacing gaskets never hurts, so long as it's done right.
Just wondering, why do you guys call it a rocker cover? Is it because of the rocking motion of the valves? Because over in america we call it a valve cover.
