- Yes you seen correctly this week i am restoring one of the most iconic rocker covers out there the Honda Civic Type R B16 rocker / cam / valve cover... Let the fun begin!
LINKS TO THE PRODUCTS USED BELOW.
Now with this restoration i could have went over the top and smoothed it all out and painted it a wild colour but instead i decided to get as close as i could to the stock finish as i possibly could ( carbon plug cover excluded ) so anyone interested in a lesson / tutorial on how to use wrinkle paint to achieve a factory look and not be left with a loosely wrinkled mess should give this video a watch.
First things first lets get in unboxed in my usual style with box cutter cam. ( Yes that is a Subaru Impreza EJ20 engine in the background click subscribe to be notified when that video comes out ;) ) As you can see the paint or whats left of the paint is ruined and flaking off and the exposed aluminum alloy has begun to corrode over time also the underside has the usual oil and carbon staining from years of use and hitting VTEC :) The gaskets have also seen much better days so they will be replaced as well when the time comes.
I got my pick from my Snap-on toolbox to prise old rocker cover gasket free then it was off to the parts washer for a thorough cleaning to remove all traces of oil grease and any other films that may be lurking on the surface. This step is vital as the next stage of paint stripping wont work to its full effectiveness if there is oil on the paint creating a barrier between the paint stripper and the paint.
So once the valve cover was fully dried i broke out the Paint Panther ( Did you like the Anchorman reference? ) and covered the full cover and left it to do its thing as you can see by the time lapse its a very satisfying process. After the paint stripper had done its job the paint was easily scraped off using a scraper and a wire brush after that it was a case of cleaning up all the excess paint stripper and moving over to the blasting cabinet.
Once in the blaster the cover was lightly blasted to remove all oxide layers and any remaining paint. A lower pressure was used on this rocker cover as its aluminium and too high a pressure would create craters in the metal and we really want to avoid that.
After blasting im left with a bare alloy cover that is starting to look a bit better than it did when i first took it out of the box. Next job on the list is to restore the lettering using a mix of wire wheels on the Dremel / Draper multi-tool and then finish it off with a light sanding in one direction to restore the factory brushed effect. Then is was a case of masking up i chose to just do a cut scene for this process as you've seen me do it a million times and it is a very tedious process.
When all masked up i moved over to the painting table and gave the rocker cover a good de-greasing to ensure all oils from my skin or the blades i was using would not contaminate the painting process. For this paint job i am using a can of VHT red wrinkle paint to match the OEM finish the Type R had from the factory. The key to this paint is consistent heavy coats in a pattern that ensures even coverage. Once coated and left to flash off for a few minutes it was time to bake the cover at 75 degrees Celsius for and hour to get nice tight wrinkles if you dont bake the part the wrinkles end up all loose and saggy and you end up with a real amateur looking job. Heat is the key... but no too much of it!
After curing overnight i came back to remove the masking and fit the next gasket set. At this point i also lightly sanded the logos again to restore the clean edges and remove any markings from the masking tape again its the attention to these small details that give your project a professional look ;)
Once all of that was done the oil cap and plug cover were reinstalled along with all new stainless steel mounting hardware and i think you'll agree the finished result looks absolutely stunning, Its a real shame to hide it away under a bonnet / hood but oh well at least it will look lovely when checking the fluid levels haha!

Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.
How much you charge?

you prolly dont care but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot the password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Blake Brycen thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Blake Brycen it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass!
that is, without a doubt, the most beautiful shade of red I have ever seen. God damn.
Glad you liked it :)
I'd call it sensuous. Sad I got my SOHC cover done in black..

Well, now you know how to do it in red 😉
exactly! now I want everything I own to be painted in this color
@@RRCRestoration It is actually the 75C baking that makes that finish???Ifyou didn't;t bake it???what would be the outcome??
This is perhaps the most iconic, beautiful and regconisable engine cover.
Dont forget the rb26 valvecovers
K20 Type R/Spoon Valve Cover might be the most iconic nowadays lol
These vidoes are brilliant and a breath of fresh air ! No awful music, no silly animations or pointless graphics,no sound effects and finally most important of all no Inane rambling voice over!!!! just the job in hand from start to finish no nonsense!
Thank you so much for your kind comment i means a lot to me :)
Restoration add 50 horse power to Honda engine !
Red ALWAYS adds power! Lol
yea its a really neon almost.
Imagine if he applied some stickers
And if you add stickers even more horse power
actually because he painted it, he added an extra weight, meaning his 0-60 time has been reduced by 0.000001 seconds, what a blistering loss
Thank FK..no talking..just a man and his tools
that's the best part, and no music either.
I dont know much about how professional you ought to be to clean a piece of a car, But watching other people do what they do best it’s actually very satisfying. Btw, love the color 😎💪💪
This vintage Honda were just excellent, even the cam cover is engineered beautifully, and as a bonus it looks great too.
Is the mid-late 90's considered vintage these days? I was born in '85, am I antique? lol
@@kjpete3 Vintage just means the time they come from, it does not suggest they are really old. And at 34 years old you are just a nipper :)
This is a pleasure to watch. My best friend lost his battle with cancer 2 years ago at the age of 20 and his dream car is a Honda Civic Type R. He loved pushing the VTEC for that power.
Love the action. Definitely need a hydroblast cabinet. Cut half that prep down with ten times the result.
how you put this video together, simple yet creative, no music just asmr. i like.
Thank you, Im very glad you like it :)
That new 710 cap really sets it off
Beat me to it!

i never have seen this thing so damaged before. i hope it never will look like that again. great work!
Another outstanding video from the "silent craftsman" your work is so detailed orientated, well done sir, well done!
Thank you for your kind comment :)
If you take a flat file to the lettering, just go in one single direction, it gives it a really crisp machined look. I've done this on a few D16 valve covers.
Thanks for the tip ill be sure to give that a go in the future :)
An anchor man joke, clearly a man of good taste and high society
Thank you ;)
The visuals, camera angles, sounds, VERY soothing. Plus the end product, very satisfying. 👍👍👍
Thank you very much! :)
@@RRCRestoration yep, earned yourself a new sub brother!!! Keep up the great work and restos coming! Very ASMER-esque!!
Nice video great finish on the wrinkle
People should be aware though that washing should have been done after blasting
There are windage trays inaccesible to the eye that could have damaging media left stuck there its a real risk
Not shitting on sand blasting its just all about being as safe as possible when its the rocker cover.
I completely agree with your comment.
Why is this so satisfying....
I ALWAYS recommend flushing a valve cover with water after sand blasting. I've seen motors spin bearings due to the sand getting into the oil...
First thing i thought of was dam hope he flushed it thoroughly cause if not 😂
Fantastic Video, very clear and precise. This is the right and proper way to restore that famous Honda D.O.H.C, V-TEC rocker cover. One should always stick to the original paint colour of the rocker cover. OH, and always use genuine Honda rocker cover gasket parts! They are the best. Trust me.
Bonjours, i from France , sorry for my Bad english , i love this RUclips Channel thanks for vidéo it's very great jobs
En effet , c'est propre
The prepping method, requiring the amount of equipment, is unheard of on YT - good job w/ the craftsmanship ... quite a rarity
Back in the day. I put the cover in my mom's oven. Did the trick :D. but this heater seems to work as well.
I did this myself a couple years back as well. didn't have as many tools n machines to use...
It was July in Texas so I just left it outside in the sun and you bet your ass it did the job...looked 100% oem and all it cost me was $58. I see rocker covers like that selling for 3 figures left and right
I was skeptical since it's a clone of other VERY well known DIY resto-channels but the result was great. Have my sub.

Absolutely amazing work. This is my first time seeing your channel and this video definitely has me hooked. Keep up the good work!

Did this with my Peugeot Mi16 magnesium rocker cover. Can be a bit painful at times, but when you get a factory finish it's so so worth it
Hi thanks for leaving a comment. yeah it can be a bit tedious but when you stand back and see your results its well worth the pain and effort :)
This is like ASMR for car enthusiast
one of the best restoration videos I have ever seen
The lettering is aluminium so they are going to get dark if you dont apply some kind of lacquer/varnish.👍
there's always that one comment 🤦

Almost followed your process to a "T." I didn't have the parts washer nor did I have the media blaster so the prep work was much longer. I stripped the covers a few times with paint stripper, washed them with mineral spirits and used the sponge type and wool pad on my angle grinder for the remaining removal. Used the "Dremel-like" tool for the hard to reach spots. Masked the covers after a second wash of mineral spirits, applied the paint and after each coat gently warmed it with a heat gun on low.
The golden age of Honda. We need more VTEC, yo! Not this turbo, CVT crap lol
Great job. Happy to see you taped off the holes for the ignition coils. You see so many of then redone where they don't do this step.
That moment when you realize you should have hammered in the spark plug seals before you painted the valve cover.
Or you just put a beach towel under it so the paint takes no damage ...
I love seeing people that take pride in what they do
Thank you, i certainly am proud of this cover :)
Honda Civic - my first love. Forever!

Better than OEM! 👍

wrinkle red is THE only colour for a rocker/camcover ! as always, excellent work sir.
Agreed :) Thanks for the comment :)
I would never allow that part to go anywhere near a motor of mine, unless he used baking soda as a blast media.
Guy on the Miata forum bought a 94r who the PO sandblasted the valve cover. Sand was still in baffles. Ruined the motor.
Just clean it off
Could just put it back in the wash?
I brought my H22 valve covers in to be sandblasted and powder coated Honda type R red and it came back with just a little bit of material under the baffle but it was easy to clean out, they looks awesome in red. A little over 2 hundred dollars cad. Not a bad price in my books
Love the anchorman reference
I love to see it on a Civic type R
Wow.. same as that. As im working in a car shop..reparing that from civic . I remove paint grease b4 painting a hight temp red. Then cover o carbonfiber with resin.. then the logo i buffing .. love to see that..
I hope you cover the inside of the cover before sandblasting... Otherwise you probably kill the engine that cover will be put on. Thats a quite "common" mistake, there is plate for oil separation and ventilation of the head. No matter how you do it, it its not covered the sand will "hide" there, and over time it will find its way to oil pump and bearings. I know few engines that got fucked up this way... After full rebuild or just the cover respray, engine seized.... If the cover was sandblasted without thinking, there was always sand in oil pump that caused the engine failure. (There was also someone youtube, who did restoration of brake calipers and sandblasted them, without covering the cylinder? (sorry, english is my 2nd...) and have to use force to put the piston back, its supposed to slide easily in... wasnt that you? :D )
Hi, Thanks for leaving a comment. I can assure you that there is no sand left in this cover, I do a lot of work off camera to ensure whatever i am restoring is fully functional again and i would never let this cover be used again if i thought it was in anyway going to cause engine failure. As for the brake calipers i know the video you mean and i wasn't me. When i restored my calipers the piston was left in place until the blasting was over to protect the machined surface.
@@RRCRestoration Glad to hear. :-) I like watching these "no music/talking. just work" type of videos. Buuut there is a few YT channels who doing this (car parts especially) and with similar format (to be honest, there is not much ways how to to this), and sometimes i lost track of what i saw and where. So if you take it personally in any way, im sorry.
I hope you are right with the cover, as i said a know about few engines wasted because of this. The only way to make sure there is no sand, is to cover it up before blasting (the easiest and fastest way by the way...) or drill out the vapor plate, clean it perfectly (people still find there some sand left after Hours of cleaning , i remmenber when i did cover for my Honda, it wasnt blasted, chamber is too small.... But when i cleaning it, there was still some oil left under the plate. And that was oil, something that can be dissolved, i use several degreasers, but there was always oil left every time i pour some cleaner in. And this is a sand, you have to remove it mechanically... ), and rivet it back in place. Best way to make sure there is no sand left without removing the plate, would be a ultrasound cleaner, put cover in, tilted on one side, allowing the sand to fall off. Clean it, put it back in, tilted on other side, and repeat until there is no sand in water ( i would filter it and look for sand etc.). But sooo much time and effort wasted, when you can spend only 30 minutes masking the inside and save a lot of time.
No doubt, its the best restoration i've ever seen...
Thank you very much :)
Can I just send you my entire damn car?
😂 yeah he does good work 😯
That is extremely satisfying to watch
it has atleast 10 extra hp now!

Thank you, Its actually an EJ20 from my Impreza. There will be more info on it in the next video.
I must have seen this video 20 times now. Damn, it's so good.
Nice! Im glad you really enjoy my video :)
Is it just me or should he have masked off all the ports and threaded regions before blasting?
he shouldnt have blasted it in general imo, its very difficult to get all of the blasting media out of the baffles on the back, it might be okay but i think just using sandpaper would have gotten the same results just more work
Bro Finally a new video, life is boring without one of your videos.

I had to go back and check. Looks like masking tape if you take a screenshot and zoom in.
@@ro63rto Yeah, I think you're right. It threw me when he wiped it down just before applying the paint.

Hi, I just want to leave a comment here to clear up a few issues that people have been having with the restoration. Yes the cover was sandblasted and did have blast media in behind the vapor plate but what i didn't show on camera was the time i took to ensure the every spec of sand was cleaned out from every nook and cranny of that cover especially from behind the vapor barrier. I would not allow this cover to go back into service without being absolutely certain that there was no debris left inside.
The paint used in the video is specifically formulated to be used on bare metal, No primer needed. I have used this paint for years and never had an issue with paint failure.
I also did not mask the grommet recesses deliberately and that is because once the paint has fully cured if you use the correct sized wire wheel and a quick spin in a drill you get a totally clean edge and perfect mating surface for the rubber grommet unlike the sharp jagged edge you always get when masking round grommet recesses. Again i didn't show this on camera as i didn't think you would be interested in a small detail like that.
So i hope this comment helps you all out and clears up a few of the issues people have been having.
See you all in the next video :)
Which Paint do you used? Link to Amazon? Thanks!
