This is from the movie Tommy. Also in the production, Eric Clapton doing "Eyesight to the Blind", Tina Turner doing "The Acid Queen", Jack Nicholson doing "Go to the Mirror" and Ann Margret doing "Tommy, Can You Hear Me?".
@@KenMinor-ek1xs Keith Moon was great in the movie "Tommy" along with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Ann Margret, Jack Nicholson, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, Oliver Reed, etc. Saw it in 1975 we cut school.
According to Peter Townsend, Elton and the band arrived at the studio to create this version of the song. They wrote and recorded this version in its entirety (vocals, solos, overdubs, backing vocals, everything) in less than four hours. He said in his autobiography that he was blown away at how fast and efficient Elton and the band were.
Done by Elton with his original Elton John band featuring Davey Johnstone on Guitars, Dee Murray on Bass, Nigel Olsson on drums and Ray Cooper, Percussion. Performed at the height of Elton's popularity where everything he touched turned into gold records.
Originally written by Pete Townshend for the 1969 Rock Opera album, " Tommy" performed by The Who, Elton released his version for the movie " Tommy" in 1974. Elton uses his unmistakable piano style to replace the great accoustic guitar work of Pete on The Who's version. Elton's performance in the movie is phenomenal and needs to be seen. So far out and unforgettable, as is this performance. I saw The Who play this great tune in concert, 1976 in Toronto, it was such a blast and I have to say I love both renditions. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Great memory DJ 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
Tommy was a called a “rock opera”, if I remember correctly. I love both versions. It’s a great rock song. Thanks so much for this submission, BJ! And thank you, Harri, for your enjoyment and reaction 🥳
I had totally forgotten that Sir Elton had covered this! I played the Who’s “Tommy” so much I think I wore out the vinyl! Great request and reaction. Thanks Harri and DJ Bilodeau 🌸💐✌️
A thing no one talks about is Elton's ability to sing a song sincerely, like a role in a mini-play. Here he IS the Pinball Wizard. The other thing is how amazing his band is.
You should see Elton in the movie Tommy. He wears 4 foot platform shoes playing an oversized pinball machine. Singing this song. Loved Tina Turner as the Acid Queen. Ann Margaret looked hot . And Roger Daltrey was Tommy.
I love this film and bought the soundtrack album when it came out , it's worth checking out the film, it's fantastic, Oliver Reed and Anne Margaret ( amazing voice) are brilliantly casted in it . The soundtrack is excellent.I really hope you check out film Tommy on your channel. You'll love this song even more when you see this scene in the film.
Elton John played the Pinball Wizard in the 1975 film adaptation of Tommy and did so, reportedly, on the promise that he could keep the Doc Martin boots specially crafted for his character. His performance in the film is a hoot. Check it out when you can, if for no other reason than to get a load of his boots. Also check out Tina Turner's performance in the movie as The Acid Queen. Fire!
When the movie came out, I was unfamiliar with the album and had limited knowledge of The Who due to limited availability of decent radio stations. I was a freshman in college and I wasn't going to spend $3 on a movie that I didn't know if I'd like it. A year later, after this song had been played to death on the local radio, the on campus student union offered the movie to be seen either for free, or certainly no more than a dollar, so I went. I loved the entire movie, and Elton John's performance was the best highlight for me.
Elton took this tune and said to the Who "this is how to do this song" then he took Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and said the same thing to the Beatles.
Great reaction Harri! Did you notice the singers in the background during the guitar solo singing "Can't Explain"? That and the outro riff were a nice homage to another song by The Who.
I have always considered this version the better of the two, for me the way he chose to handle the "sure plays a mean pinball"is more pleasing to the ear
@@TT-wb3ke It came right out of 'TOMMY' Elton's character wore these enormous elevator shoes & a strange outfit ~ I never forgot that movie it literally put the Who on the map ~ Overnight they went from competing for a piece of the market to owning it ~ Eric Clapton was also featured in the movie ~ the dual lead segments with Pete Townsend were incredible ~ lest we forget Tina Turner as the 'Acid Queen?' WOWWWW!!! YOU LOOK COMPLETELYYYY DIFFERENT NOW HARRI 💯😊A BIGGGGG DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU GET RID OF THE HAIR HUH? 👍 AND YES HARRI, THIS VERSION IS SO MUCH MORE OF A BANGER THEN THE WHO'S VERSION, AND OF COURSE ELTON PLAYED THE PINBALL WIZARD IN THE ROCK OPERA ( TOMMY ) SO!
I remember this from ‘Tommy’. I can’t say I appreciated the movie but I was only 10 when it came out out so was probably too young to fully understand it. It was weird.
Not sure why the cover of Caribou is up there, but this was a single not included on any album, until it was added later as a bonus track to Captain Fantastic
Huge Who and Elton fan here. Elton out-rocked the Who on this tune (they tried to cover his "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" but didn't match his original in my opinion).
prefer the Who' version . But with much respect would you do a react to Britain's most under look blue's singer Elle's Bailey. song What's the matter with you ❤or Elle's Bailey - Stones (Acoustic Version) Live at Production Park( stunning) or at least her song Howling Wolf a respect song to all the past legends or the blue's Please brother.
This is all thanks to Elton. Elton had the same producer Gus Dudgeon until the end of the 90s. In the 80s Elton had bad times and boring songs and that days Gus did not change anything in his songs😆 On the contrary the production was even worse😅

I love everything about the movie Tommy. Elton John is a definite highlight in his scene.
This was a huge hit for Elton John. The fact that he opened his Glastonbury gig last year with it shows how important this song was for him.

Elton had a way with covers. He really made them his own. His band was firing on all cylinders by this point.
I love this version of the song. The energy from the piano completely demonstrates the action of the pinball game.

This is a great one DJ. What an amazing song by Elton and The Who. Thank. you and Harri.

Elton John was the Pinball Wizard in “Tommy”
Always preferred this version tbh. This was the version in Tommy the movie.

I don't remember movies costing $3 in 1975, I don't think I could've afforded to see it in a NYC borough.
Elton can really hit those high notes even now
Elton sung this in the movie Tommy, and it was the only 'hit' version in America
this song wasn't a single it was a DJ promotion copy in the U.S. for radio play. They played it a lot on the radio.
Great song!
I saw Tommy as a boy and I fell in love with Eltons music then...Love this version.
Elton took this tune and said to the Who "this is how to do this song" then he took Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and said the same thing to the Beatles.

I like that version. Thst csme out while I was in high school. On the radio sll the time
Who ever said that Elton and his band couldn't flat out rock
I had forgotten how good this was ! 🎉🎉🎉
Elton John played the pinball wizard in the Who's Rock Opera Tommy.
I was hoping by the thumbnail you were going to do the video. It is awsome and i love the costuming and set pieces.

You HAVE to see the VIDEO of Elton John singing this in the movie TOMMY wearing four and a half foot tall BOOTs and on STILTS!
What I loved is that his pinball machine had a piano keyboard.

Tommy was about the fifth album I ever bought, ca 1982. I was naive about what the story was. Thankfully.
I got this album on RSD, it's a 2 record set in blue vinyl. Limited to 3,000 copies I believe. ❤
Gus Dudgeon produced this. That was Elton’s producer in the 70s.
I've seen Tommy by The Who in concert ... so this well always belong to The Who ...
I'm sure you're already aware the back up musicians on this are in fact the Who ~ from their movie 'Tommy' still a great movie

It was actually better than The Who.....so rarely can I say that about such a classic song (as originally done).

I must confess that I don't appreciate his voice here....😀😀
This is one terrible cover, and that movie was awful.
I think he adapted a "bratty" tone for the scene in the movie...
Another better cover version of a song is AC/DC's rendition of a blues classic, "Baby Please Don't Go"
