Hey Shawn, nice toter you got there! I'm 46 yr veteran driver so i think i can speak with confidence here.. To start, guages are good, the more components you can monitor the better off you are, just pay attention to what they are telling you, to nip a problem in the bud before its too late. Secondly, 24.5's are good, they'll actually help with weight and fuel economy if you have them on the drives aswell. Just like a race car, the bigger diameter works. That Cat motor for the later Cat's is the better one. I personally preferred the old 3406B a mechanical motor not electronic. I love all these want a be's that think they know what they're talking about. If that Cat ever goes down with a major problem just throw a Cat 6NZ in it and you'll be even more impressed!
Well happy trails, be safe and have a great season guys!

6NZ is my favorite CAT engine. Drove over a million miles on one. Only ever left me stranded once and that was due to dealer service tech left a ratchet in the engine compartment and it took out some electricals and the fan. Driving in downtown Philadelphia in the dead heat of summer 95+ degrees ambient, you kinda need a fan or you’re going to overheat sitting at light after light.

@@justindelvalle9179 hell try sitting in NYC or Boston in the middle of the summer time I'm almost 36 and my Dad drove up and down the East Coast 3/4 of my child hood and then in my early teens he started going from East to West and sitting in any big city traffic is no fun at all unless you have good "scenery" to look at and to be honest trucker's these days don't really know what real trucking is compared to back in the day and don't get me wrong next to the military for keeping our country safe I have the most respect for all truck driver's but back nowadays you hardly ever see a truck with a CB radio and now trucks have automatic transmissions, cruise control, power steering, power brakes, power windows, back up cameras, and not only air ride seats but air ride suspension and back then you had crank windows, one air seat and those were leather or vinyl and the passenger seat was cloth velour or like a crushed velvet material and if you were lucky to have a 13in tv the passenger could only watch a movie on VHS and later on DVD but then they came out with them packages you could buy at the truck stops where it came with a cord phone, a coaxial cable cord and a phone/cable tv card for you to call and get cable tv airtime kind of like a prepaid phone card but for tv and depending on which truck stop you were at depended on how many channels you got and how good they came in and if I'm not mistaken you could also use that card for a shower card as well and I know you could make long distance calls with it as well but then my dad started carrying his cell phone so then we just used it for a tv card and shower card and with that whole setup you had to be parked at a truck stop with the wire going through the vent window all the way down the side of your truck to a little box on the white line for the parking spot and you damn sure didn't want your big window down for the cord to go through just in case the truck stop was notorious for Lot Lizards you didn't want a Lot Lizard jumping on the side of your truck in the middle of the night looking to get a date because she might end up giving you something AJAX and a Brillo pad won't wash off and as a kid you loved being at the truck stops for the arcade games and you was able to watch something else besides movies but as a truck driver if the wheels aren't moving you ain't making any money sitting at a truck stop you're just wasting it but while you're going down the road the CB radio was the best entertainment you would get because if you were lucky you would run into a Lady Trucker or Co-pilot and she would be looking for some entertainment as well and their husbands wouldn't give two shits about them showing off anything they wanted to other trucker's because they would get a show at the same time and at the end of the day they're going home together and we would end up running in a convoy or roll race while going down the highway just to see who had the faster truck and I've been to almost all of the lower 48 so I have seen some scenery and I have seen some "scenery" and even woman in cars if they caught you looking at them while going down the road they would show you some stuff too sitting in traffic or moving it didn't matter and it didn't matter what time of day it was either but it's not like that anymore there is too many Karen's out there and if you gave them the motion to flash you they are more than likely going to write your tag number down and your company name and call the state boys for harassment and don't even think about trying to show them what you are working with you'll definitely go to jail no doubt about it

I have been fans of Murder Nova for a while now. Met you guys in Boise this last year. Just FYI so you know I am not full of crap. I have been driving truck for 36 years since I was 17 years old when I joined the Army in 1985. Now I own a small fleet of trucks, and we mainly run Peterbilts. A 98 or 99 cat is an E-model cat. C15 did not come out until the later of 2000. Your motor is probably a 1LW, or a 5EK. Both are great motors. One thing about CAT that might be helpful for you when you are driving, is that they are low rpm motors, meaning you do not need to get your rpms high to get the horsepower out of them. They can pretty much pull themselves out of a hole in lower rpms, (1150-1300), because of the torque they produce. We have a custom 2001 Peterbilt that we take to shows, and it is an absolute great truck to own. Since I am writing this to you, I do need to mention to you what you said Trucker Matt told you about the Duck. I call BS, and I have the years to back it up. He needs to do his history on the Duck. I have one on our show truck, and the truck I drive every day. The Duck is a symbol. It means when you're looking at a duck on the water, it's smooth as hell. Hardly ever shows what it's really doing. And that is paddling like hell under the water. I love the symbol of the Duck. Being a business owner, I am constantly looking as calm as I can for my customers and employees. But believe me, under the water I am usually paddling like hell. It seems to me you guys are often doing the same. So please do a little history on the Duck, don't take my word for it. and see for yourself what it means. After, if you change your mind, I would be honored if you would let me purchase one for you to place on the hood of that Peterbilt. FYI, I am also a fellow racer with a 1963 Chevy 2. Have a great evening guys!

The way I was taught to drive then is remember 10 to 15 on shift. And on the high low splitter you can flip it up on the low side before you shift to go to the high side. It will not change until you go into neutral. Outside of that the truck is beautiful, and csnt wait to see it on the circuit of npk. Good luck on America's list and og for number 1!

After 2 years of that bullshit, had it deleted & had the DPF taken off & tuned. What a difference. Before 100kph loaded. After 120kph loaded. Fuel mileage went up 60 %. You will love the Cat motor. When turning five miles an hour per gear is a good place to start so 35 is 7th gear and so on.
When you downshift take 2 or 3 gears at a time using the same principle just Rev it 1350 or so before you catch the lower gear.

As a cat trained mechanic. I can tell you if it’s the original engine for a late 90s truck. Then it’s will be a 3406E which is a great engine. They were available in either 475hp or 550hp. There was also a 600hp version available, but the internals were different.
The C15 is the replacement for the 3406E, they are basically the same engine, just with a few upgrades. They physically look almost the same.
And that turbo whistle is normal for that engine. They all do it. Cummins guys always complain about that when they have to drive a cat. Lol

Hell ya bro. Iv been a truck driver for 18 years. Still love it. If u need any info or help lmk. Learning a big rig is easy just ask a few questions an u can learn real quick. Double clutching on ur downshift helps. An if u don't come off the throttle all the way the engine brake won't activate. Or if u just rest ur foot on the clutch a lil bit during shifting the engine brake won't activate. Lil things like that will help. Keep the rpms under 18 hundo or u will wear out that motor... 17 hundo is a good shift point an then hold the next gear close an it'll drop in when rpm matches...easy stuff guys...good luck

Nothing wrong with the 24.5 tires! I, personally, don’t like the Firestone tires! I remember blowing 2 of them out on the steering axle, not at the same time, but they weren’t steel belted tires. They were the old bias ply! Haven’t run any Firestones since then. Figured that the 3rd time might be bad since I held the first 2. Was on an older COE without power steering too! Need to put you a 14” drop visor over that windshield to help with the coolness factor! That is a very nice truck Shawn! I drove one of these for 35 years before having to give it up! Still miss it until I see the type of driver that is out there today!

Blinkers in those older trucks won’t automatically turn off like the newer ones will. You’ll get better at shifting and knowing what gear you’ll downshift into the more you drive it, just takes practice. Just glad to see you don’t use the clutch to shift into every gear like a lot of these rookies do! You needed to match the 24.5 tired all the way around so that your tires wear better.

Learn to downshift by memorizing the miles per hour range for each gear. For example turning through an intersection will require between 15 to 25 mph. Making an immediate right turn will probably be 10 mph. Learn which gear coincides with those speeds. There’s only a couple to remember. If you’re skipping gears when you downshift, checking your speedometer will tell you which gear to go to. I hope this helps.

All in the driver or owners quest for power and what they were accustomed too given their experience and wallet would allow.

The trick to leaving the Jake on while floating the gears is to rest your toe on the clutch pedal rod where it bends just above the floor to disengage the micro switch at the top of the clutch pedal’s travel. If there isn’t a few inches of free play it won’t work and a sign the clutch needs adjustment.

That’s a great engine. I would run Cat or Baldwin oil and fuel filters. I’m a 30 year veteran over the road truck driver. Horsepower will be between 475 and 550 from the factory the tag is on the side of the engine driver side right below the valve cover. And no, the more power you have the less work the truck has to do. Which means better fuel mileage. You need someone to drive it around for you just give me a call lol I’ll teach y’all all you need to know about that truck. Top to bottom. Y’all have a good one. Very nice ride

Well as someone whos an automotive machinist I can tell you that your lucky its an e model. The c15s are scalloped in between the valve seats and are terrible about cracking Seat to seat. I'm not big on the overhead cam cats just because they are so so heavy and roadside repair is significantly more diffacult instead of a multiple cylinder head setup. All in all though the 3406 family is a good one. Congrats guys hopefully it gets you years and years of trouble free use.

For shifting and determining what gear should you be in. Pretend your gear splitter doesn't exist and you have a 10 speed. 5low/5high. If the speed limit is 35mpg. Add the numbers together. 3+5=8thgr.. 45mph/ 4+5=9th. This is a rough est based on gearing but start there. Your side switch is only a 1/2 gear. So think of it as a 10sp with an assist for when pulling weight.

Engine serial is on a tag passenger side rear of the block. It will tell you anything you need to know about the engine. If the tag is gone it will be stamped on the block under the exhaust manifold halfway between pan and manifold. 24.5s have more rubber and last the longest . The Pete’s don’t have as much cab room as others. That’s a jam up truck !! Good luck this year

The big handle on the center of the hood is to pull your hood open, you will torque it and twist it lifting from one side, the hardest thing ever is guessing catching a gear while your rolling , just downshift and you the engine brake as much as you can, plus brakes get hot and fade so the engine brake is your friend. You sure have a nice rig for you and family to travel and pull your car, you look like your doing fine and you will get used to it all eventually, keep doing what your doing, living a dream. Racing for a living and travel with family and friends 🇺🇸

you can leave the jake brake on while shifting, have a toe on the gas stops it from engaging. an instructor can pass a fail mark on a test for hearing the brake at the wrong time after instructing to have it turned on, called under improper coordination.

all semi's have blinkers like that. that's why they always leave them on. usually when you press down on the clutch just a little the jakes are supposed to go off when your shifting but I noticed on my peterbuilt the jakes don't go off. I have to turn the switch off so maybe its a newer pete thing for the jakes to not turn off when you hit the clutch.

CAT C-15 3406E awesome engine. I loved mine would make oversized loads seem like there was nothing back there. You can NEVER have too much horsepower especially in a big rig. You could have 1500hp and its would just be a whole lot of fun. Bostrom low ride seats, and set it back farther from where it sits now to stretch the legs and be low with air in the seat.👌

  • @Work_For_It_Customs

General rule of thumb for ten speeds and others with some play is. When you don’t know what gear look at your speed. If your doing 25 then 2+5 =7. So 7 gear. 35=8th gear. 45= 9th gear. And when down shifting there is 500rpms between each gear always. So rev match up 500 and it will fall in place. Also don’t let your foot all the way off the gas or lightly cover the clutch to keep the jake brake from engaging on shifts. Good luck out there.

The 3406e is the previous model right before the c15 was made. 3406e is almost 16 liter and a great engine. Later on in 2006 the c15 accert was made twin turbo for emission purposes. The single turbo 6nz c15 is supposed to have a stronger block for 1000 hp drag racing trucks so for what you have a 3406e is a great engine i have one in my driveway set at 600 hp in a kenworth. Cool truck
A 2015 with a 3406e is a glider truck that is emissions exempt no def fluid or dpf crap that way. The Jake on when you shift will come with practice its all about letting off the go pedal just not all the way so the jake hits

Shawn and Phantom you guys have the best Cat motor, its a 475 stock from the factory to Max 550. It is the c15 3406E 6NZ engine, I had one in the 03 Pete 379 I used to drive for 7 years. I miss that truck, the ACERT motor is the twin turbo after the 6NZ engine that one had 600hp. It was Cat’s way to be “environmental” friendly.
