Listening to alligator babies calling for their mothers in the night while all you have defend yourself with is a tiny knife, and then having no trouble saying that you like to hug. Did you ever imagine that you would be able to pick a trail, grab some food and gear and go 55 miles even a few years ago ;or even that you would have cause to use that number in any sentence not related to highway speed limits. I imagine that if set your mind to accomplishing anything, put a little planning into it that you most definitely would succeed.

Some reason, more than we know of, they are sure he is there. They don't want to look like fools twice on this case IMO. Thanks for ur expert opinion! Law enforcement is searching nationwide and worldwide in states and countries they get tips in, but if Florida police on any level got tips that he was in another state or country, they couldn't go searching there themselves as they don't have jurisdiction in other states or countries but sorry I have a 147 IQ and critically think about everything and see the bigger picture while people keep complaining about Florida officials who don't have jurisdiction outside of Florida! I did all but the last ~100 miles of the Appalachian trail in 2010. For the first few nights I was borderline terrified of the sounds I’d hear around my camp at night. In the mountains, away from cities, the nights are so black it was really scary. Even raccoons and possums sounded like a black bear in my head. But as time went on I got to the point where I could sleep soundly. I was always cognizant of bears - never let my guard down. I saw quite a few but they’d always vanish before I got too close. I think I heard them around my camp a few times around dusk but fortunately they never bothered my tent.

How do you avoid foot rot?

Kinda makes one wonder if anyone makes a lightweight 5×7 or even slightly larger inflateable. Portable dry spot.
Then again something like that might just be too inviting for critters that swim and crawl.

The swamp is our snowy mountains just like this it is a hard trek but that is the choices we make when we hike. When you hike the Florida trail you just have to except that the swamp is hard but you get the hardest part done first if you are northbound.

You're making the Florida Trail look more like a prison escape movie!

So, the swamp is deserted with no houses for miles? It's just trees and water with small patches of land?

Yes this was in big cypress preserve. The trail is 30 miles with no structures inbetween. Floridas population mostly lives on the coast. That being said many natives still live in southern Florida area and have structures on islands out in the swamps however I did not see any exploring this preserve.

@@SecondChanceHiker Wow, that's incredible. I live in Jacksonville so I've never seen something like this in real life. It's crazy to think that it exists and I definitely want to see it for myself 😀 Great video, man.

Congrats on finishing the swamp section. It would make me very, very nervous hearing splashing noises and feeling like something was aware of my presence and in the area. What does an alligators diet consist of, besides the random hiker hiking the Florida Trail. I would think they like to eat fish. So maybe the splashing sound was made by a fish and the thing moving around out there, loves to eat fish. Looking forward to seeing more of your journey.

Cory, just out of curiosity, is this sort of 'real time' (something you are doing currently) or is it from December? Just wondering how much I should worry about you :) It's so interesting how hiking and camping can be quite miserable at times but is worth it anyway. It means we love the outdoors. When ex and I were living in South Carolina (before Florida and then Tennessee) I read a book about Bartram's travels. Ex was interested in William Bartram and I got him a book for his birthday and ended up reading it first. When I see you hiking the trail there it comes to mind. Winter in Florida is so beautiful. Forgot last time commenting about the good times on the water with John. We did a fair amount of kayaking in Florida and that was wonderful, on rivers with springs and such. (Scary whitewater experiences in West Virginia and Tennessee, though some good canoing). You are a fantastic role model for your kids! Yes, for sure keep your guard up!! I feel like it's unlikely you'd be eaten by an alligator, but I understand the fear. I remember John saying something about running perpendicular at them. One of our friends has a cousin who's an alligator wrestler and has scars on his head from being chomped!
