I love how you EQ the 7 string, not cranking the bass and toning it down a bit to tighten it up. You'd handle an 8 string pretty well. 😉😉 LOL. Posted at the 415 mark.
I really like your videos and your way of explaining things.I don't usually get much out of videos like these the way people make them but with yours I feel like I always learn something valuable and helpful and you do very well in making sense of a complex nuanced subject matter.
It's so funny, I just checked the settings on my 5150 and they're almost identical to yours. I pulled my bass back a bit and upped the treble. Also, great explanation of presence/resonance. I also use a BOSS GE-1 pedal to just pull back the highest highs (6.4k) a lil bit to remove some of the "scratchiness". Great video man
That was a jam Jason. I bought a 7 string multiscale about 9 months ago and barely play it. It was just too good of a deal to pass up and it supported a local shop instead of the big box. This was inspiring and I have a song that has some very similar parts back in the mid 90's when I got my B.C. Rich Warlock and put a DiMarzio in the bridge. (It was basically attempt at what if Slayer, Sepultura, and Deicide were all in the same band.) I'm going to have to rearrange it to make good use of my 7 string. I think it will be perfect. Thanks for sharing your tuning and string gauge. I also play 9's in standard tuning, I switch to 10's if I'm down tuning. I also enjoyed your discussion on subjective tone. You can take the same head and plug it into a different cab and it's not going to sound the same. Sometimes I think people don't understand the complete signal chain: input jack -> EVERYTHING in between-> speakers. That's what you hear. Even in the most simplest of setups there are a lot of variables. Thanks again. \m/
Perfect tone and 7 string guitar Jason! it doesn't instantly 'sound' to me like a 7 string - you know ridiculous muddy booming bottom end and nothing else, this sounds more like a baritone guitar - a full even mix of the tonal range across all strings without the low B overpowering all the others!
Awesome video, very helpful! Could you do one on metal tone using Logic and a digital amp, mic etc? Just the guitar tone? Including Bus and how to use it? \m/
Thank you for talking about equaliser and for explaining how to set up a good tone!! I've recently been looking to upgrade my tones and my setup for myself. I'm playing fishman pickups on a Strandberg and have noticed the active pickups are really different to the passive pickups on all my other guitars. Out of curiosity Jason, I notice you mainly talk about real amps, pedals and guitars. I personally really like that approach . I have tried modellers and a Headrush unit and am still unsure if I'll go back to something like that. If I'm looking for something to improve my setup, would you recommend the Blackstar amped for a nice thick metal tone? I like to play clean guitar tone too ! I mainly go for a prog metal tone a bit like John Petrucci from Dream Theater mixed with a modern prog metal sound ( the contortionist) but not super duper djent like periphery. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I love your playing and keep on shredding Jason :) thank you for the really informative video!!
Some say it does impact the tone but man, I’ve always preferred low action. I was really surprised to hear Yngwie (in the recent interview with Rick Beato) say his action isn’t super low. I’m thinking the scalloped frets help compensate for ease of playability though
This was a great demonstration of how you have achieved a very good guitar tone using a real amplifier, a real cabinet, and a real mic. I am wondering if you have a similar type tutorial while using a digital counterpart? I am struggling to find a seven string tone that I am pleased with, I have access to many tools and gadgets but keep feeling like I'm falling short in clarity. Any help or advice you have would be great.
Yes, I still have the EVH head and 212 but will more than likely be selling it. It's a great amp but I don't have the need for it and really want to continue working exclusively with Balckstar
I wish I had the money to get a nice 7 string like that! I have a lower end schecter and a dean that sounds ok but the strings feel like they’re really close together.
You may just need a guitar with a different style neck. I prefer Ibanez wizard necks as my hands fit those better. And some prefer thicker necks so you have to find what works best for you

@@jasonstallworth really like your style. It's a mix of a lot of my favorite artists. You are clearly well cultured! Looking forward to getting your music and learning more!
Dude there's so much to amplifiers that I just don't understand! I feel like I've gotten decent at playing but I just don't understand pedals, amps and amp heads. All so confusing.

Yeah man the bass cranked sounds great in the room but not so much in the mix
I'm really glad to find out you've decided to keep the 7 string!

Agreed 100%. Found Jason’s metal mastermind channel and it is awesome.

DevilDriver vibes with some of them riffs 🤘😤🤘🔥🔥
🤘🤘🤘
I would say more of a Nevermore vibe. Jeff Loomis would be proud. RIP Warrel Dane🤘🏻
Great vid as always.
Takes a bit of getting used to that seventh string, but once you do it adds so much depth to tonal harmony!
I’m still not used to it, if I’m being honest 😂
Bro I feel the same. As a huge fan of Nevermore, but a lifelong 6-stringer, that added B is something I gotta wrap my head around still!!

Yeah cabs make a huge difference!! 🤘
Very cool! I love the sound of those 707s. They are honestly my favorite 7 string pickup.
It’s got a nice and brutal tone!
Would love a vid like this for that 80’s Hair Band tone 😊

Metal and beer? Yes please. New sub over there, ill be binging over the weekend to catch up. 🍻
Oh man thank you! I’m hoping to have a new one on there next week!
I recently picked up this Blackstar head! It's fantastic. Tried your settings in Drop C and it was perfect! Great demo my friend!
It’s a killer amp!

Yeah man that’s the danger of lower tunings…the notes can quickly lose clarity
NICE you had me head-tapping to those opening riffs. Good job.
:)

Hell yeah! Agreed!
Absolutely amazing!!

Sounds fire and could totally be used on a record!

Awe inspiring Jason!

I like the Amped 3 but I do recommend getting an additional OD pedal, and once you do that you’ll also need a noise gate. But that setup sounds great!
HEY MAN! I'M YOUR FAN! LIVE LONGER AND PROSPER!
🙏🏻🤘
Love your style man

I couldn’t imagine a better metal tone than this. Bravo and thank you man.

Cool intro song Jason 😎What are your thoughts on how action and pickup height affect rhythm tone? (For a mix context, not live)

Jason, you have a 212 EVH cab, right? I just got the 412 in white and was wondering how you like it in general.

@@jasonstallworth the schecter 7 I have isn’t terrible, but it could definitely use new strings. I think 2 of the higher strings are mixed up.
SICK
🤘
Scale length and string material affects tone way more than string guage. The other big tone changer is plain v wound.
That’s true..that can make a huge difference
hey Jason, no more EVH ?
I still have it for now
Did you sell the EVH head ?
I still have it but considering sellling it
Sounds a lot like Demon Hunter. (nice)
Haven’t heard them in a while! 🤘

Try these settings in the video and see if that helps
