About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

you said nut, impregnated and g string within the span of 15 seconds
This stuff is X rated!
he also said slippery and fucking around that time 🤔
Brollic Riffz hamburger
Misfit Massacre A man and woman were fucking and the man was going to nut on her g string but she was slippery so he slipped and accidentally impregnated her
The drums in that pickup comparison sounded so perfect that I could barely pay any attention to the guitar sound. Good job Glenn.
+Ulaş Gürsoy thank you very much!
You still using that Sound Radix Drum Leveler vst? They sound great. Punchy, but natrual and roomy.
Powerful sound, especially during the double bass beat.
what? drums were WAY too loud. it's metal, not a dishwasher with a microwave in it
To answer to whether you should upgrade or replace your guitar, you have to ask "Do I like how the neck feels?"
If you do, mod away, put in pickups worth more than the guitar itself if you want to.
If you do not like the feel then by the time you have modded to the point of it being comfortable you could have just bought a new guitar all together.
You can easily make a guitar sound better, there is only so much you can do to make it play better.
I was thinking of something along the same lines, despite not playing guitar myself.
+The10000lbGorilla true. The Legator feels pretty great, and was worth the upgrade
Seems like fair advice. there's millions of pickups, amps, pedals, and other devices to change tone that you can DIY install, but recarving a neck is generally beyond most people.
I have an old Washburn Force 3 strat style guitar with an incredible maple neck. I decided to upgrade the pick ups to humbuckers, added a third slim humbucker and added coil split switches for all the pickups.
The guitar has a ton of different tones now for not a lot of money.
Plus I learned a crap load about guitar modding!
Would love to see more vids like these!
The10000lbGorilla
Pretty much. If you can find a good feeling used "expensive new" guitar that feels great for a couple hundred bucks then put in another couple hundred towards some upgrades (if needed) you can procure a rather killer guitar for less than a new one of equal feel.
I recently upgraded all the electronics in my 1991 Ibanez RBM-1 Voyager. My mom bought it used 15 years ago and it was in rough shape but man it played so smooth. 15 years later it got a new paint job (thanks Marty Bell) all new dimarzios and upgraded switches and proper soldering work. They went for $1200 new in '91. I put about $700 into it (mostly the finish and pickups, the body was raw mahogany when I got it) but now it's back to new and plays like a beast!
“The nut makes life so much simpler”
Anyone with children would disagree with you
Aah, until there old enough to now the lawn, and do the dishes, then it all comes full circle.
Honestly, I don't think the fishmans sound that much better. Maybe slightly, but I wouldn't have bothered to change them. Since you're so fussy about tuning (much like myself) I would've used that money on an evertune, personally.
The Fishman's benefit can't be heard too well on just low-chuggy parts. It's the clarity when you are really overdriven and playing complex chords across 7 and 8 string guitars where you really hear what the big deal is. You should also check out Tosin's video showing his Fluence pickups. You'll really notice it then.
Deathrape2001 nobody wants to buy new guitars if you can upgrade the one you have for cheap
while youre talking shit go listen to mark knopfler on a non anything you just said and learn to play. Im all about setnecks and mahogany. But youre just a dude who read some shit on the internet and joined a cult
mark the problem is he insists on this ultracrunch garbage because the studio expert seems to think shit sound you can produce on a midi guitar can demo anything. someone needs to take away the bass string on his guitars and 2 or 3 of the fuzz pedals he puts in front of his amp
It was a bad riff choice and patch for a comparison video
The drums sounded so amazing that I completely forgot about the guitar...
Ty Tabor was telling about his experience with the Fishman Fluence pickups after the show with King's X in Battle Creek, MI! Last night. Great video.
i don't think the difference in pickups is worth the cost - you may as well just put the normal ones through an eq pedal and shape it that way
the fishman pickups of all pickups are well worth the upgrade cost. They don't suffer from any potential noise issue making them fucking stellar for tracking guitar.
@@kmw5100 eh the Fishman pickups were very unimpressive in this video and now owning a guitar with them they are by far the worst sounding pickups I have. I'm not sure what all the fuss is. I think the Fishman are over hyped and sound like total garbage.
Not downplaying the clarity of those pickups they're awesome. I just can't wait to see what other manufacturers come out with as a response to this, particularly for super-thick sludge, death, symphonic and djent that really push the boundaries of the front end :).
Anyone else not liking the guitar tone in the full mix comparison? I can hear the difference between the pickups, but both guitars seem to be lost behind the drums. Is it that rhythm tracks are intended to be washed out, especially when there are lead vocals or lead guitar going on?
Excellent video as always Glenn! Only useful information here! You get to the point and show us what’s important so we can get to work! Great work! Keep it up!
I got an older Ibanez RG that has a locking nut. Put new strings on it, stretched them, and tuned. I haven't had to retune for weeks. It has stayed perfectly in tune every time I pick it up.
I have been using graphtech nuts and tuners for the last few years, Super happy with them. Much easier to tune with the ratios imo. Even had my E string tuner break at one point and they replaced it quickly with no hassle. I am having my 12 string outfitted with graphtech nut and saddle right now as well.
Great video Glen!
I took my old RG320FM from 2003 and replaced every piece of hardware except the body, neck, and truss rod. I wasn't sure if I could replace the bridge, because tolerances, but I actually found an original Edge Pro locally by me. Switching to that bridge, same as Vais, the tuning is ridiculously consistent. I changed the pick-ups to Stephen Carpenters signature 6 string pickups by Fishman and now this guitar is solid. I'm now researching pickups for my 7 string RG from 2000. It too had an original Edge bridge. The cheaper guitars have knock off floyd rose bridges and that just don't last. The Edge bridges are quality
LOVED that lead tone!
Glenn, great vid. Those diy guitars, would love to see what you can do with one of those
In 2003 my mom bought me my first good guitar, an Ibanez RG320FM. I left it at home when I joined the military and 10 years later I brought it with me. During that time, the Edge Pro 2 rusted and the chrome plating chipped away. Everything was falling apart. My mom passed in 2018 and I decided to mod that guitar in her memory. Didn't have to but I changed the tuning keys to Sperzel locking tuners (redundant on a Floyd Rose), Fishman Fluence Stephen Carpenter signature pickups with push pull pots, all new hardware including a Fender selector switch which was the highest rated switch on the market in my research. But the most amazing upgrade was finding an original Edge Pro 1 bridge from 2003 I got used but looked brand new. That thing is so solid. That guitar went from premium to trashed to the best guitar I own and my most expensive guitar was a $1000 Schecter Hellraiser C1FR. It kicks all of my guitars asses in ever aspect. The sound is clean and clear and the tuning stability is unmatched. That trem is a work of art with how solid it is.
Boss man shredding the riff!! Tear it up boss man!!!! Sounds absolutely fantastic!!!!
Amazing video! You gave me a second thought of upgrading my 7 string Jackson x series which is rarely in tune after a decent shredding!
Not a huge incremental upgrade from legator pickups to fishman pickups. Not much of a difference according to my ears.
Ankur Chakrabarti "you just dont get it"
Ankur Chakrabarti I agree.
I was surprised but yeah really close.
Slightly more bite, slightly more top end, barely discernable. Want to give him the benefit of the doubt though because I don't think our speakers or headphones or even his microphone can capture the true tone.
I heard more bottom end and every string was equally punchy compared to the original pickups which sounded louder when the higher strings were played while the lower strings were harder to hear.
Use nut sauce to keep your G-string from getting bound. It sounds totally wrong, but it does work.. lol
+Gary Childress longtime user of Nut Sauce. Good stuff. The Graph Tech is a better solution though
Graph tech nuts seem to grind their way down in my experience. After a few months i just get shittons of fret buzz from open to 5th fret or so. really annoying
You must be a heavy gauge user like myself.
Nut sauce.
Dude, I love me some dirty jokes, but this... I salute you.
@AA AA I mean, that's literally what people call it
Plan on getting a set for my seven string rg7420pb these sounded great in this demo
Hey Glenn. I bought a cheap 7 string last year (Ibanez GRG7) and I've read a lot on the internet that the 25.5 scale length won't handle anything below drop a/b standard tuning. Could you make a video explaining the relationship between scale length, tuning and string gauge?
I just put some fishmans in my $400 Agile 8 string and I'm beyond happy with them! Definitely increased the quality of my guitar's tone by a lot!
Wicked thumb print on the neck pickup!
the ratio tuners are freaking amazing. got them when the first came out and put them on my am. strat.
Could you make another video for this but for drums? Thanks!
not only is this a great lil vid, but it was an awesome test of my new monitors too! Is there anything you don't do that is "above the mark" ? Hats off sir!
The fishman fluence have a lot more balls to it, also string definition and attack improved as well. Very good stuff Glenn!
Since you said that the fishman PU's improve String seperation it would've been great to hear some more distorted chords etc instead of some riffing on the B and E strings. Just some critique for future demos.
cheeeeeeers
+Mantis yep. Agreed
more fishman reviews!! :D
i really wish you would review clean. When you review distorted you're reviewing your amp and pedals not the guitar. And you should play on your own reviews. Youre a great guitarist. Most of the guys you have play for you are just djenters... Appreciate the reviews of brands other ..snobby.. reviewers wont. Im pretty sure we've seen enough paid fender/gibson reviews....
Dear Glenn, i love the vids keep em coming! When it comes to tone as far as the pickups go i used my sony headphones and i can barely hear a difference but then again i dont got "studio quality" ears. With that being said would you be able to eq the cheap pickup to sound like the expensive one? Have a good day man, cheers from seattlish.
I know glens channel primarily focuses on guitar, but the drums always sound gorgeous! What do you use to track them?
Your rhythm playing is great
Nice job, how much did it cost total and how it compares to more premium stuff from same price category?
what do you guys think about the Douglas brand 7 & 8 string guitars? they are dirt cheap but would it be worth it?
Hey Glenn, love the video. Ive been jamming with some friends for a while and my other guitar player refuses to upgrade his guitar so it stays in tune and wont buy a new one either. He acts like a bass player when it comes to absolutely everything. What should I do?
definitely thought the before & after side by side comparison was really cool!
Nice comparison Glenn! I have done that to a few guitars myself and brought them up from ok to great!
Sounds a touch clearer and brighter =) a great looking guitar too!
Love the new intro!
Hey Glenn love the channel. I've been having a problem getting a clear tone on my 8 string. It is 28 inch scale and has blackouts abh 1 pick ups. I'm only tuned a half step down and I have 9-80 Ernie ball strings on it. I have a peavey vip 2 vypyr. (The newer one) and I use the 6505 setting and I mostly use no effects but occasionally use the tube screamer on the amp. Sorry this is long, but I want to be detailed. If it matters I also have a 7 string legator bone stock. Tuned to drop a and sometimes drop g.
Hey Glen, were all the tuners upgraded? I have a similar project going on and cant seem to find a 7 string kit for those ratio tuners...
Sounds really good, are they active or passive, I really can't stand EMGs but if they are normal pickups seems like a good deal.
It's good that you love the mod. All I'm hearing with my noise cancelling headphones is a marginal goosing of the low end. I wouldn't do that kind of swap myself for that little benefit. Cheers!
i noticed you have a foam piece above the nut but not below the bridge. Have you tried both?
Nice! That does sound better!
Hey Glenn I was wondering if it is worth it or either get a seven string guitar or a six string but with heavy gauge strings?
Hey Glenn, whats with the foam beyond the nut? Are you getting a sympathetic feedback?
Hi Glen! Should I upgrade the amp first or the guitar? I'm playing for 2 years with the same cheap gear and I am in the point I wanna upgrade something and I really don't know what.
You intrigued me with the tuners, gonna check them out. I have one non-floyd rose and one floyd rose guitar, is that what you think would work best on my jacksons? they are both 6string and I don't tune lower than D
Could you possibly tell me what delay you used on that lead tone? It sounds great.
Love the intro
Hey man I was wondering what bands you have mixed and mastered and where I can hear their music
What would you recommend for recording desktop pc or laptop pc. Mac or windows. And would u recommend reaper or logic as a daw ?
the link you put for the ratio locking tuners was for a 6 string set... I was just wondering how exactly you ordered them?
fishmen fluence pickups are amazing, especially on clean tones
hi, i just dug out my dean ml, its really got some grit in its tone even with my cheap marshall amp n zoom pedal...... a case of expensive guitar and cheap amd setup working well...... have u ever had any experience with deans (was impressed cos id not used mine for years and it was still vertually in tune! lol)
ps yes am getting new strings on it
pps you rock!
hey can you do a review an the yamaha rbx170y they have an amazing tone for only being $200
I'd be curious to see you do an A/B with your Fishmans vs. an EMG equipped guitar
I've been use graphtech for years the saddles are nice too
GLENN what was that widening/echoey effect on his solo? I've been looking for a way to fatten my guitar solos for years. Help!
Hey - i have a 7 string ninja pretty much identical to yours...my question: which set of Graphtech tuners did you get for the reverse headstock set up? I hope you are still reading the comments from this video! Thanks!
I bought a $150 custom Schecter Diamond Series S-1 with a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup in the bridge and a Duncan Designed pickup in the neck.
It also comes with Grover locking tuners.
The only modifications I would make to the guitar when I get the money would be to rewire it a coil tap function for both pickups, a Dimarzio Liquidfire in the neck (For that epic John Petrucci solo tone), Schaller strap locks and the ESP double locking tuners found on the Eclipse Deluxe.
Do they make that exact guitar in a 6 string? Maple fretboard, string thru, etc?
hey glenn! awesome show! what could you advice on maple board maintenance, your fretboard looks pristine and so far the only thing i've red is, stay away from lemon oil. thx in advance, cheers from Mexico
Sounds sick! I like the Seymour Duncan Invaders myself...massive sustain, and violent crunch!
The mid range on the fishmen were scooped but idk if its worth the price of routing and installation and initial cost of them
Hey Glenn. What's your opinion on Fernandes pickups? Also do you like Kng Crimson? Love from Sweden.
quick question glen: if i wanted to buy the tuners, do i have to buy 2 sets of 6? can't a set of 7 be found? thanks
Hey Glen! You've talked a lot about the Peavey 5150 and 6505. What is your opinion of the Fender/EVH 5150III amps?
Hi Glen! How about Warmoth guitars?Have you ever play them?I'm thinking about order a stratocaster neck and body from them and do the rest assembling with my guitar-tech friend.Any suggestion?THX
I have a Epiphone Les Paul Ultra 3 that’s my favorite guitar. I swapped out the plastic nut for a compensated brass nut, swapped out the stock tune-o-matic for a roller bridge, and replaced the tuners with some hipshot open gear locking tuners. I’d like to try a string butler but not sure it’s worth the $50 price tag. All in all every change was totally worth it.
Thank you
I recently picked up a JT700 and personally but It's not really the best for technical death metal. What kind of pickups should I get for it so can put out a more technical sound?
Glenn, would you think about taking a look at the Peavey Transfex amplifier? 2 speaker cabs, and I think it sounds amazing.
May I ask how much you paid for your guitar and your upgrade? Thanks
Hey Glenn, what do you think of duncan designed pickups vs Seymour Duncan pickups?
Hi Glenn, awesome video as always.
I've seen you guys use the Jim Root telecaster in the telecaster metal video, what are your thoughts on it? Could you maybe do a review about it? Much love from the Netherlands.
Is a brass all around for setup better for sustain, ie Saddle? The roller saddle is good for tuning also.
Where did you find a set of Graph Tech tuners for a 7 string? The link you provided is for a 6
Another tuning suggestion for many 3x3 tuning peg guitars is a String Butler, which makes all the strings go straight through the nut.
What do you think about the Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 401?
Where did you get the ratio tuners for a reverse headstock 7 string - just bought one and looking for a set.
How's the overall fretboard has there been a slight shrinkage where you had to bevel the fret ends.
great drummer
I can't find the Ratio tuners in a 7 String set. Doesn't look like they make them. How did you get them?
What do you think about dimarizo evo 7 string pickups?
I can't seem to find anyplace to buy a 7 string guitar build kit. I have a 6 string Aria and a 6 string Gladiator I am giving to my grandchildren. I want to build a 7 string with the same upgrades you put on your green guitar. Am I going to have to buy a 7 string guitar off the rack and upgrade it? I want it set up with a separate volume for each Humbucker but I want it to have the push/pull switch that splits the Humbuckers into single coil pickups. I'd like it to have the same layout of the 4 nobs and a 5 way switch that the Aria has.
Any opinions on a pick up that would fit in my esp h207 neck position that would sound as close to the classic fender neck/middle position tone as possible?
Did you try the push pull on the tone knob?
would those pickups fit in a jackson js22-7?
What kind of foam do you have behind the nut?
Really liked this video! To my ears there was a dramatic improvement. I could definitely hear more low end and the overall tone just got fatter. I've never thought about changing out my tuners, though. I've got a BC Rich that I just love the tone of, but I can never bring it out to a gig because it loses its tuning halfway through a song! So this has definitely given me something to think about doing later on. So thanks!
I just recently switched out the pickups in my old Ibanez RG550 with some Seymour Duncans. I'll be able to pick it up this weekend. I can't wait to hear the difference!
This inspired me more to upgrade the guitar that my wife gave to me. And nice groove there!
i know this video is old. but can you tell me is there shorter guitars and longer. because I feöl in love with a schecter and it felt shorter.
Hey Glenn! Awesome video as always! Really enjoyed this one, was very interesting! Just a little tip that would instantly improve your picking technique: try playing everything downstrokes, especially in standard metal riffs. It's a lot harder in the beginning, but if you do it for a while, it sounds so much better and more powerful! That trick helped me a lot to get my rhythm playing on point.
Nice upgrades.
How can i make a muddy too dark sounding string trough 7 brighter?Beside the PUs?
Hey Glenn, good video. It's probably not much related to what you usually make videos about, but since you mentioned tuning could you make a video about what makes a good tuning stability for guitars with floating bridge? I have a Schecter Omen 6 FR and every time it's a pain to get it in tune. It's hard to get it in tune first, then it looses tuning after you lock the top locks and then while you use a fine tuner to tune one of the strings it affects the tune of the others. Kinda feel that there should be an easier way to keep that monster in tune.
