I got mine because I wanted access to lower notes, but didn't want to sacrifice the higher notes by down tuning. Plus, I really like the way clean stuff sounds in standard tuning. Another reason is that I like to jam along with some of my favorite songs (80's Thrash), and many of those are in standard tuning.

Waiting for my new and first 7 string to arrive now! I've been a half-assed player for the last 5 years or so, playing on occasion but never really expanding my skills. However thanks to 2020 I've been so much more dedicated thanks to excess free time and youtube. I'm a death metal/deathcore player and want the ability to play lower tuned songs, but the more I've researched 7-strings getting prepared for the extra string and found myself exploring the fretboard like never before. Stoked for you videos man, thanks for all the help and pushing my playing.

When I started listening to Carcass, Hypocrisy and other 7 string bands at that time, I became obsessed with buying one. I have 7 string Ibanez RG1527 (made in Japan) and it's absolutely fantastic.
The whole point for a 7 string, is that it gives you total different chords. It might take a while to adjust and get used to it, but it's absolutely amazing.

this lesson rips, needed some 7 string inspiration, I typed in "Learning metal on a 7 string" so glad i did, my 7er is a Schecter JL-7FR with the newer Duncan Jeff Loomis pick ups, I truly have never heard actives sound this good, stainless frets, it sings for days, a very very stable guitar, one of Schecter's best. I tend to noodle too much on a 7 string because they sound incredible and are too much fun, this video helped me focus on the chord progression

This is a great video, and your best tip is #7 - don't restrict your playing to just chugging on the low string!
I also got mine for compositional purposes but it helped that I'd been playing a 5 string bass in a prog metal band for 4 years.
I'd been writing a lot on that bass and I got sick of detuning my guitar so I got a Mark Holcomb signature PRS which I love!

@@jasonstallworth OK Jason I have a question. My primary amp is a Marshall Origin 15W. I'm thinking it's not the right amp for the 7 string as the low string gets super muffled and distorted. Any tips on the right amps for low grinding metal? Or even some amp/pedal settings you find that work well? I started playing metal when I was 14 - all on solid state amps but now in my 40's I play all genres. Jazz, blues and rock sound amazing on the Marshall but I'm wondering if the tube amp isn't for metal. What do you think? For reference I'm looking for a sound like 'Burn" by In This Moment. Solid, low, percussive fury...

An update in case anyone else is dealing with the 7-string amp question. Turning the amp master way up solves the problem. As always the metal solution is the best solution. Not sure my family appreciates this approach but I believe my problem was trying to practice at a reasonable volume.

And i think you are the best person to answer my question.
right i`l get straight to the point,
ive just turned 50 and probably bought 6 guitars over the last 30 years and each time had them for a few months then sell because i felt i was getting nowhere,
but recently i have tried again and bought a schecter hellraiser c-1 6 string and man i love it has the split emgs pickups,
i can play some basic chords and now bits of songs but its only now its finally starting to sink in and improving slowly!
    but more than ever before.
so hope your still with me and not fell asleep!!!
so here's the thing I'm 6`7" rocking 19st my sound im after is like carcass/paradise lost so im torn on which guitar to go for next ?
So 7 string or 6 string baritone!!!!!
so if you're in my shoes what would you pick and why Jason it would just help to know your opinion if possible?

    • @jasonstallworth

Dude, my honest recommendation with a 7 string is don't touch the tuning. Just leave it in standard and when you want those lower notes, play those on that heavy B string. As far as strings, I've been using Elixir Nanoweb lights for a long time now.

      @jasonstallworth  2 года назад +2

For me, the standard B is low enough. I don't understand why anyone would want to tune down further than that. Hi Jason. Thanks for a another great video. I stumbled upon your channel awhile ago and I must say you have helped me a lot.
A year ago I picked up playing guitar again after a long break. And I have played regularly ever since, mostly autistic. I have played a lot when I was younger so I didn’t have to start al over. As a reward if I continued playing I would get me an electronic guitar and amp. Which I did( an Ibanez GRG121DX and a Boss Katana MKII). I absolutely love playing the electric guitar, metal all the way. With a lot of help from your videos.
So I am already planning to upgrade to a better guitar. I love the sound of 7- and 8-string guitars(Meshuggah), the heavier the better.
So my question is if I should go for a 7 string for my next guitar? I know I have just started my guitar journey. But I wouldn’t mind playing just 6 strings on the 7 string for a long time just to get used to the feeling and then start slowly adding the 7th string
What do you think? Any help is appreciated. All the best from Sweden.
