  • Part two continues with the Mamas and Papas story and their heavy involvement in producing the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967. The joy created from this festival did not last and the group faltered. Solo careers followed and the sad death of Cass Elliot. Matt puts the myth on Cass's death to death and goes into detail with clips of many of their best songs and deep cuts.

As someone who grew up when the Mamas and Papas hit big on AM radio in the 60's I believe their influence on pop music has been underestimated. Cass was a great talent who never really got her due. A good appreciation.

This is one of my favorite series you ever did. This was my father’s favorite group as a young man and he died last year. I have taken over the mantle of fandom and it has been a pleasure getting autographs from Michelle Phillips and getting to know John and Michele’s daughter Chynna and Cass’s daughter Owen thank you once again.

Terrific Matt. The breakdown of their finances vis a vis Dunnhill was revelatory. You always do such a great job revealing the back half of the careers of these bands.... Denny once did an interview up here in Canada and talked about how he got sober and how tough the road was for John. I will never forget his words. It helped plant the seed for me getting sober years later. I always regretted not thanking him. On a different weird tangent, their set was great from Monterey, however, I wish someone would also have released the Association's set from Monterey. Windy and ACM sound terrific from that first night.

Great post! And thanks for spending time on Monterey Pop. 1967 was a much rosier time time than 1968, which stirred up the public's feelings, often contradictory, from events like the assassinations of RFK and Martin Luther King, a divisive presidential race, and in January, Hanoi's Tet offensive which prompted Walter Conkite (our CBS uncle who always told the truth, so we thought) to criticize the war on the evening news. (Remember that there were only 3 channels in '68). Crowds at concerts were more politicized, and plans for a second Monterey Pop festival were nixed by area conservatives who criticized the '67 Festival as the rock and roll brought sex and drugs (!!!)near their homes.

Great job Matt, their story is incredible and also incredibly sad when it comes to Cass - who let’s face it had a great voice and knew how to use it. John’s dissent into hard drugs shows that too much success may not be good for anyone. They deserve their place in history and John’s work for the Monterey Pop Festival lives on - definitely the best festival of the sixties.
    Cheers.

Even when I think I know a lot about a particular 60's group, you never fail to impress with a very informative and enjoyable band biography. I particularly appreciated how you started the entire story going back to The Journeymen. What has impresses me most about the Mamas and the Papas is the legacy they left behind after only three years of existence (and contentious years at that). Hard to think of any band with a similar resume in such a short period of time. (And they did not have the benefit of notable solo careers that might have carried the music forward - I consider the "New Mamas and Papas" to be a rather marginal substitute to the real thing.)

I love their appearance at Monterey Pop Festival. Although the performance is ragged, and the harmonies in particular are pretty rough sounding, it still manages to exude charm and even optimism, and Cass' between-song banter is a hoot from start to finish. They hated the fact that it was released as an album, and as an album it is indeed pretty subpar. But if you want to get some of that Summer of Love feeling, its really a pretty fun set to hear. Really enjoyed these episodes!

My takeaway from this series, is that The Mamas and the Papas, through their association with Lou Adler and Dunhill Records, had creative control, enjoyed the fruits of their labor, and had all the benefits of their own label, something their contemporaries all struggled to achieve. The Mamas and The Papas had their business side taken care of in a tidy fashion. The foundation John and Michelle Philips established through the Monterey Pop Festival, still benefits public school music programs in Monterey County, CA. I might also add that the DVD of The Monterey Pop Festival is excellent, and includes performances that did not make it into the movie.

Hey Matt! I loved your recap of the whole M&P's story!!
I have some info regarding the People Like Us sessions...
As you mention, John was in full control of the engineering of the album, and at first, Cass very prominent throughout the whole tracklist of the album, but by last minute decision of John, he erased her from many parts or even songs, like in the single Step Out (it's up to us to judge why). Later in 2010 a compilation album came out that contains full remixes of the PLU recordings. I am not sure if they were left as John pretended back in 71, or they were manipulated in some way, but the importance is that Cass' voice can be really heard, and honestly, I prefere some of them much more than the originals... You can find these remixes on youtube, in Reese Scott's channel!
    Thanks again ☺

Really nice research there regarding the Dunhill deal, as well as the sandwich myth, and everything else---as usual! Thanks.

Well documented as always, awesome deep dive! I just thought my Dad was being rude when I was a kiddo explaining Cass' demise (clearly he was sort of, but always wondered). TOTALLY forgot about the Mackenzie Phillips connection, always felt terrible for what she went through.

Great show as usual. I heard that John was upset with the recording of "Dream A Little Dream Of Me"

Thanks Harry. He wasn't upset about the recording, just that Dunhill billed it as Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas. Denny and Michelle were not pleased either.
