"lo" is an object pronoun, but also a non-gender article used to express very subtle and abstract concepts, and usually used with adjectives to transform them into nouns. For example: "Lo bueno y lo malo (de...) (( the good and the bad (aspects of...)))" is almost another way of saying: "el bien y el mal (good and evil)"... "lo oscuro = la oscuridad ( the dark = the darkness)", but in this case, "lo oscuro" can also have a profound meaning, not only related to a physical darkness, it might also refer to something phycological... Moreover, it's often seen the forms: " lo que", "lo cual", and it's like saying: "the that, the what, the which"... Spanish uses definite articles too much, you know.
Professor Jason, I love you man! There's nothing for me like diving into an extensive, straightforward, no BS video about a topic I'm interested in. You make things clear as crystal--it's a great format; it really works for me.
You have a nice, confident, but relaxed and easygoing teaching style. Thank you. I enjoyed this. It's like being in a small class with a friendly professor. Se is a real obstacle to us newbies and intermediates. All help like this is appreciated!
I love that I can go back to each lesson repeatedly and you can't ever become impatient with me! Since you're "pre-recorded" class is never over! Great lessons. You do a great job of keeping it simple and lighthearted.
Thanks for the video, alot of confusion has now been cleared up. I have been studying Spanish for a year now, and above everything else the whole "se" subject has been the most confusing to me. Now that I have a good understanding of it I'm going to read some Spanish articles and stories.
ProfessorJason- thank you for this video lesson! I’ve actually watched it several times over the last few years, and I found myself thinking about it again yesterday and today. Once again I learned a lot from it! I hope everything is going well with you! I’ve learned so much from you, and I really appreciate all of your Spanish speaking videos!
Excellent presentation by Professor Jason. The of se with or without the accent mark is more understandable. I have been listening to his tutorials and really enjoy them. Mas tutorials por favor.
I've been reading Don Quijote and I didn't really understand the no-fault se! This video has enlightened me. You teach with such clarity; unlike most of the spanish teachers I have had when it comes to grammar. Bien Hecho Profe Jason!
The more I study Spanish (going on ten years now), the more I'm frustrated by the language's idiosyncrasies, such as with the many uses of se in this lesson. You have helped me greatly. Thank you!
Although I only have a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish, I think I've managed to understand the gist of your presentation. It was really interesting. Thanks, Professor Jason! By the way, I've watched most of your videos.
Professor Jason! I might have written another review already, but I just watched this video again, and I wanted to post a comment saying how great it is! I’ve actually watched it about 10 times over the last three years or so, and I find it incredibly helpful! I’ve watched so many of your other videos also, and I have learned so much from them! Thanks for all you do!
All of your videos are extremely well-outlined,well-presented and very informative. I,actually, use them a lot in my study of Spanish. Thanks a lot and keep making new vids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EXCELLENT video! I have been reading news articles in Spanish and could not figure out why all of these "se" words appeared. Amazing and clear video explaining all the different uses!
I appreciate all your lessons. I moved to Bolivia five months ago with little understanding of the Spanish language. I have been learning Spanish on my own without an official teacher. Your videos have helped me tremendously to understand the more complicated concepts. Would you do a video on the uses of "lo". I've been reading and reading on it and its uses doesn't make sense to me.
you are great!!!!!!!!!!!,just owesome!!!!!!!!!!! the way you have explained nobody could.I have been living in spain for last four years and went to many friends and a few spanish professors but they could not make the mes clear. Thanks a lot
This has really helped me. Words can't even begin to describe how much I needed this video. i was just about to search for video lessons and you popped right up on my subscriptions list. And you explained everything that I really needed to know. Thank you so much.
This was fantastic! The final one (#6) was exceptionally helpful...that construction always left me feeling uncertain. Your teaching style is so easy to understand that I've subscribed. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your great Spanish video: The Particle SE in Spanish. So far this is the best lesson that I have found on what is sometime a difficult subject for students of Spanish. It has helped me to understand se and when it is used. For so long, I had found it incomprehensible; however, after watching your video a few times, I have got a much clearer understanding of it, Gracias a ti
Thank you for your explanation of the uses of 'se'. After watching your video I'm beginning to understand, very well explained. Greetings from England.
I like your, «blink and you miss it"», little sprinkles of humour. They’re very dry and cuasi British in their delivery. On a serious note I find your clases really useful.
Hi Professor Jason! I just want to reach out and thank you once again for taking the time and making the effort to put this together. I’ve listen to so many of your videos, including this one, multiple times, and I find them incredibly useful. I was driving to work in Connecticut today listening to this video, and once again, gleaned so much from it. I hope you’re staying safe during these strange times. It would be wonderful to meet you sometime. Sincerely, Matt Gordon.
Thank you so much for this video! I discovered your channel yesterday and have watched a few already. I hope to get through your entire catalogue of videos promptly. You are a great teacher and I look forward to more viewing. Thanks again!
Also, keep in mind that in true impersonal se constructions the verb can only be conjugated in the third person singular. One way to think of such constructions is to consider "se" as the subject (syntactically it is), a subject that is singular. So with "se" as a singlar subject whatever verb comes after it must agree and can only be in the third-person singular. In passive se constructions, the subject is the noun and thus the verb may be either singular or plural.
Muchísimas gracias profesor. Has explicado fantásticamente bien los usos de ‘se’. Es complicado creo yo, pero ahora es más claro. Gracias y que tengas una buena noche.
Thank you so much for making these concepts so comprehensible and for taking your precious time and compiling all these beautiful concepts together. I wish you a very good day and health . Saludos desde India !
What an awesome lesson! You gave such a clear overview of 'se' which has always been tricky for me. I say it every time but I loooooove your lessons - you can't imagine how they clear things up for me and tie things together. Thank you so much for taking time out of your summer to do this for your youtube students! I love these longer lessons - so complete and helpful. This is one of my fav lessons :)))
This is exactly what I need. Things become clear when you explain them. Sooo great that you don not make a show out of explaining, but stick to the point. 😄
I'm in an immersion class in Bilbao, Spain currently and this came up in class today. I was having such a hard time wrapping my head around it. Thanks so much for making this video and the other ones as well.
Disregard my prior post with question regarding compound verbs as I was delighted to find my answer in your other great lesson with the overview for 15 verb tenses. You are the best instructor on earth, Professor Jason!
Professor Jason- I want to thank you for your wonderful Spanish videos. I’ve written once or twice before. I’m a lawyer/judge in the US- born in Puerto Rico but raised on the mainland with no real need to speak Spanish. Although learning Spanish as an adult is incredibly difficult, there are a few resources I’ve found incredibly helpful, and you are definitely one of them! Thank you! This video in particular is terrific. I appreciate your style and all of the useful information and context you provide. That’s it. I just wanted to thank you. 😊Matt Gordon
Thanks so much. I have been watching and trying to understand se but to no avail. Your video and detailed explanation has really helped me to understand so much better. I just now need to practice. Thank you.
Matthew, an example like this could (technically) be written either as a 'se-passive' construction (as it is) in which the verb form corresponds to the subject comen/tortillas (plural) OR as an 'impersonal-se' construction: Se come tortillas de maíz. (One eats corn tortillas en Guatemala). Both constructions really are grammatical, but most 'experts' recommend the first construction (passive) if what you're talking about is plural, just to avoid confusion. Good question!
Thanks a lot for your quick response.. Thanks a ton for this video. until watching this video, the usage of "SE" was a nightmare for me. Now I feel it is very easy to learn it.
I'm a Spanish teacher for many years and I've always been confounded by Passive Se. I knew how to use it, but I didn't know the reason. Luckily, I was teaching beginning Spanish. Anyway, excellent teaching.
@PSNnightmare normally, the "uno al otro" is not even needed but is implied by the verb and context (tho not the case with peinarse). But take ABRAZARse or BESARse or ESCRIBIRse: Juan y María se abrazaron, Los dos se besaron, mi mamá y yo no escribimos todos los meses. (the uno al otro is implied with certain verbs)
Paul, Thanks for the comment. Let's get to the bottom of this. But first, what are these references you refer to? Butt and Benjamin? Is your main concern the no-fault se? A no fault se expression (e.g. Se me rompieron los platos) without the se is without a doubt (in my book anyway) a reflexive construction, if I have to chose between reflexive and impersonal se. Deleting "me" in my example does not yield an impersonal se. But elaborate a bit...
HI.. Just keep going. The hardest is motivation you can't teach that and stamina. I just accept there are days when I will be awful and other days when I can speak more. My native language is English so it should be easy for me (in theory).
thanks for this video, just thought I would let you know how I use a little trick to help me remember how se is used in the "no fault" se circumstance. I dont know if this is a coloquial thing or not, but where I am from we might say, "the toy broke 'on me'"---wasnt my fault, was just playing with it and it broke (on me)-------just a thought
Good to watch, simple and clear thank you. An improvement would be for example 26:00, should sound like se dice ques peligroso and 27. Secha la sal antes... The trouble we have with verbal explanations is in not realizing blending or continuous speech which combines the words. Sounds robotic and when we try to understand native speakers not hearing the blending is frustrating.
If we take the sentence: En este bar se habla so'lo espan~ol. The sentence is definitely in the passive voice. In this bar only Spanish is spoken. In Latin language the ser or essere constructions of the passive don't seem too popular and the se or si form seem to be preferred. Se habla italiano aqui' or Qui si parla solamente italiano. At least that is the impression that I have. Both are foreign languages to me and so I stand to be corrected on what I am saying. Thanks very much for your sterling presentations and Hasta Luego y Muchas Gracias! Saludos de Malta!

Thanks Professor Jason. Everytime I need make sure how to use "se" in Spanish, I will watch this video of yours to gain clarity. You have done a wonderful job with summarizing those six ways of using "se". Thanks a lot! Just one question here, in the "se passive" structure. I often see people use " se + verb + noun" structure, but you are using " noun + se + verb" structure. For example, "se exportaron los productos " is the same as "los productos se exportaron", right? Also, I was listening to the song "Bailando" by Enrique Iglesias, the last sentence of this song is " es que se me va la dolor". Is it a " no fault se" structure? I translate it to " here is, the pain is leaving me". Gracias de nuevo. Acabo de comenzar a aprender Español por solo uno mes, me resultan utiles sus videos ;)
i like the videos and have been trying to learn spanish on my own for some time now. I wish that you would say what differnet words mean (in English) so I can learn them as we go. It is my hope that Khanacademy formally use your videos on Spanish grammar to cover the subject of Spanish language.
Thanks, Lakshmy. You are correct. I forgot the accent on Sé más romántico :)
Me has ensenado mucho, gracias Jason.
The best class on the use of se
Great explanations thank you
iv been too lazy to actually sort out some revision and learn what this omnipresent 'se' is and this came about just in time.

really great video very clear and concise
A thousand likes for your lesson at 29:53 and beyond!
Super lesson. Super instructor.
yayyyy I frekin loveee professor Jason he is the best!!!

Okay, this lesson was great. I hope you teach for a living.
Haha. Thanks! I do.
