    I also graduated 100 years ago in Spanish and spent a wonderful Junior year abroad in Spain and always had trouble with por and para and the subjunctive - these videos are incredibly helpful - I think for the first time ever I understand the subjunctive and have a much more comprehensive understanding of por and para. Thank you for all your time and the wonderful clear explanations.

    Several have commented on Prof J's speaking speed. They think he's too fast. He talks fast, occasionally he even looses me in English(my native language!). But its all good---we get exposed to what is probably normal Spanish conversational speech, while we have the sentences written out. I think this is really good for learning to understand spoken Spanish. So---we learn grammar AND get practice at hearing full-speed Spanish. Rewind, listen again, as much as necessary. I don't think you should slow down, Prof J.

    I am from Spain and usually we don't say "Fui al mercado por pan y leche", I say "Fui al mercado a por pan y leche", with preposition "a" before "por". Instead of "No me gusta viajar por tren", we say "No me gusta viajar en tren". Also instead of "Vamos para la playa" it is much common to say "Vamos a la playa". We don't say "Para un niño escribe muy bien" "but "Para ser un niño,,," Some of the expressions here are not wrong but sound quite strange for a Spanish person. Anyway, excellent lesson.

    • @dudeofsteel3118
      @dudeofsteel3118 4 года назад

      @@Fancylooks You came off to me as if you were making point that the other ways of speaking are weird, but I just read it with the wrong intention in mind. I speak spanish as well, but I'm latino so I'd rather say, "No me gusta viajar por tren" as it has the meaning of "by" to me... and I switch between a la and pa' la too by no real reasoning other than what I choose for the moment lol. Which reminds me again how different the Iberian Spanish is to Latin American. I see what you meant tho, so it's all good.

    Would it be a safe assumption to say that when it comes to motive to do something, if a verb is after "for" you should use para and if a noun comes after use por?
    As in: Fui a la tienda para comprar las frutas.

    There was only one of the quiz answers that you didn't explain, and that was for:
    ¿Votaste ___ Obama o McCain?... and that was also the only one I wasn't totally sure about. I guessed "por" so I got it right, but I didn't understand for sure. Is it because in this sentence por=to benefit/on behalf of? I was thinking of para because of the end results being the focus. Is either por or para possible depending on the context, or is this a clear "por?"
    Thank you.

    as a beginner in Spanish, the para used for the recipient of something - is this the same or roughly the same as the indirect object? Is para necessary for indirect objects?

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 8 лет назад +1

      +Howard Kitchens It's not necessary unless you are specifying that the thing or service received is intended or done FOR (not given TO) someone. To say, for example, "I gave the watch to him," you would say, "Le di el reloj" -- "para" is not necessary -- BUT you would say "El reloj es para él" ("the watch is for him"). Does that help?

  • @lionsareus
    @lionsareus 11 лет назад +1

    The web knows where we've been. It thinks I actually speak Spanish, as I watch videos & use Google's translator. Many of the ads come up in Spanish.
    One ad read: "Nada es demasiado cuando lo haces por tus seres queridos".
    I don't actually remember what they're selling, but it doesn't matter. I did, however, write down the sentence when I saw it.
    -----
    Por is used here, as you're "doing it on behalf of loved ones". But it seems to me, that in this case, para would also work, as what you're doing is "directed towards" those loved ones. Maybe there's a slight shade of difference between "para" & "por" here.
    Am I right, or not? Would both be OK in this context?

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 8 лет назад

      +lionsareus Both would be correct depending upon the precise meaning intended, but "por" carries with it the idea of "for the sake of," which I think translates better in this particular context, so I think "por" is the better choice here.

    @DJCOYFISH You can say it in many orders: "Hoy vamos a la playa" (no " Vamos para la playa", that is not correct), "Vamos hoy a la playa" or "Vamos a la playa hoy".
    In Spain we do say "Voté por Obama", but I guess the most common way would be to say "Voté a Obama" or "Le voté a Obama"

    Professor, one question... is "por" interchangeable with "de" in the case of "agent of passive constructions"? And would the answer be the same in Portuguese as well?

    • @Professorjason
      @Professorjason  10 лет назад

      Hmmm. I can't think of any cases when you would have "de" in this construction. It is almost always: Subject + form of SER + Verb in past participle (-ado/-ido) + por = agent. Did you see an example with de?

    • @DaBruizer
      @DaBruizer 10 лет назад

      Some times I converse with native portuguese speakers and I come across instances and wonder "why didn't they say "por" instead of "de" and vice versa so just asking for clarification. I will be on the look out for such examples and may be see what you say about them. until then I will hold to this rule when speaking in spanish and portuguese. Thanks again!
