Ivan, The S classes are very nice vehicles, just check the thickness of the windows glass (it is twice as thick as other cars, that is one of the reasons why its so quiet. Why don't you buy yourself a 20-30 dollar ODB2 auto checker that has software that you can run on your iPhone, connect the ODB2 sensor to the the yellow or white port close to your steering column and using the Bluetooth connection of that sensor and your iPhone and run some diagnostics and see wat kind of the problems the car has, do this before you take it to the garage. Some of the ODB2 sensor can be used to reset the Check engine light, run some diagnostics and some even give you a report with what parts need to be replaced and the approximate cost of repair. If the shop you are taking it does not have the right ODB2 software for that model car, do not use that shop. You can also go to a Mercedes dealership and ask for an estimate, if they provide freed diagnosis. This is NOT the type of car that most backyard mechanics can fix. You need a shop that does Mercedes as a specialty, otherwise you will get all kinds of wrong diagnosis and pay for things that you do not need. Trust me.

@@CalunMackinnon I don't think it can withstand anything more powerful than a BB gun, but I remember wen my windshield was hit with a falling brick, it stopped the brick from getting into the cabin (at freeway speed)!, but I don't think it is bulletproof at all like the Cybertruck that can withstand a 9mm round.

I second the motion for getting OBD access. Blue Driver is pretty good, and unlike some of the crappier Chinese dongles it won't break anything. Of course a proper bi-directional scan tool would be nice too, but when you are traveling light Blue Drivers are pretty nice. If I thought it would get there I would send you one. I wonder what an Autel goes for in Thailand?

Yes, fast - but not instantly! Every time you notice a somehow strange sound around your car, you should check or having it checked by a skilled and engaged mechanic. That sound can be produced by the timing chain, but all parts around it should also be checked. Maybe something else is broken.

Do not let "some mechanic" work on this car, no matter how good he is on Datsun and whatever. This is a Mercedes. I turned my audio all the way up and listened t the car run and so did my brother and while it may be the timing chain Although we didn't hear any evidence of it i and my brother can both tell you that you have a problem with your belt tensioner. Have that checked out first and you will probably save yourself a lot of money and headache. I think you got a good car there and you may even want to ship it to America if you come here because those cars are only going up in value over here.

I doubt it was the timing chain also. If it had that much slop that you can hear it then it wouldn't be noticeable in the engine performance. By his reactions driving it, it seems to be running and accelerating fine. If anything, probably a pulley or tensioner somewhere. Just my guess from 13.000 miles away.

Water pump, steering gear box leaks, and/or engine and transmission oil contamination would be more concerning for me.

But ,as I had noticed, I would buy something , what is more locally known by mechanics. That would be smart. Not the car for travelling around Thailand unless you plan on staying on the main highways and expressways. You need a car with good ground clearance like an SUV or pickup. If you plan to go anywhere interesting like the 120 National parks, nature reserves and mountainous areas get yourself a 4Wd pickup. The Merc looks cool but won't look so cool stuck on a mud road up in the North mountainous provinces of Thailand.

Thailand will soon brand you a dealer and make you buy a business license. How long was the Datsun love story? 2 weeks? lol. Good luck with this one, although buying the cheapest S class in Thailand is not necessarily a win.
