CV Axle/Transmission clunk and movement

  • 05 Honda Accord LX with the 2.4 liter four cylinder. This is a noise I’ve been trying to hunt down for a month now after replacing my Cv axles. To reproduce this noise, I have the front wheels off the ground and the vehicle in park. Then I have my foot on the brake and I shift into reverse. With my foot still on the brake I give it a little bit of gas. I do this same procedure in drive. When I lower the car, it still does this, and it will even do it without my foot on the brake if I start in park and jab it in reverse. However the noise is only made once, and won’t make the noise again until I change directions.

For anyone asking: I sold the car not long after making this video, for fear of transmission failure. I was never able to figure out what the problem was, however my mind always goes back to the aftermarket axles. If you can, do NOT get aftermarket CV axles for Hondas, as these cheap Chinese manufacturers can never get it right for some reason. You’re better off going to a scrap yard and getting an OEM one, or sending yours to Raxles and having it rebuilt.

I just had a look at my sisters 2012 malibu today. The front motor mount was shot and caused the bearing inside the transmission to wear because of the axle being in a bind. Never seen a motor mount cause such damage! Poor woman still owes on the car and it MAY last a few more months if she's lucky. I'm currently seeing how much trouble getting the transmission out is gonna be.. pretty sure it has a sub frame 🤦

  • @liquidzorch

In my case, I found the issue after weeks of diagnosing (during my free time). I was having this exact same sound, only once during each acceleration, i.e. acclerate, noise, then no noise even if I reved up, it wasn't until I braked and then again on next acceleration one more clank. Same going in reverse. I lifeted and felt the inner CV and could feel the noise coming from it when doing this test (as shown in this video), accelerating while holding the brake and swapping to reverse and repeat. I swapped the cv axle, but the same issue. NOW, after weeks of testing and always coming back to the CV joint since I can actually feel the clunk when touching it I finally found it. For some stupid unkown reason, my left engine mount was loose, and not by much, just 3/4 a turn on one nut on the engine side. After tightening, noise is gone. Might not be the same for everybody, but that was it for me, and it was identical to this video. Like I said, I could even feel it while touching the inner cv joint on only one side (passenger).

I had a similar issue. I've been looking for similar clunk for months, I recorded underneath of my car and it's the same. but mine only happens when the car is cold. And oddly enough the same clunk would happen when I'm reversing in an incline. I checked everything from loose bolts, mounts, subframe, suspension etc.
What fixed mine was I added CV grease in the inner and outer cv joint. Even without any rip on the rubber boot or signs of leakage. I just removed the clamps, added grease and reclamped it using the original clamp. Made sure the cv axle was attached properly in the transmission. Cleaned the splines joints as well and tighten the axle nut properly. That solved my issue. All the clunk was gone.

I repiacea my engine & transmission mounts ( arove
it for months with the mounts wasted) . now I have
this same noise when I reverse or brake going 40+. 1
diagnose it today, conformed the noise coming
from cv axis/ transmission sections. I'm thinking
the axis bended due to the engine weight due to to
wasted mount. So replace with new axis? How ever
I'm worried that gears inside of transmission are
bended due to same issue. So should i replace axle
or drive till the transmission gives and then replace
everything? Any help or guidance with be appreciated .

Me too. It didn't do it before I changed the factory axle. Now it does this same thing from the wheel. Everythings tight too. No idea why it started this.
