    The pedal on a diesel isn’t a throttle, its a speed selector. The pedal position tells the governor or ECU in your case what RPM to run at, and the gov/ECU controls the fuel to achieve and maintain that commanded RPM. You halved the final ratio, so you halved the engine RPM and pedal position necessary to maintain a given speed. At 30K, your gearing should be delivering ~13,400# of thrust from the tires. That should be enough to pull you up 26.5 deg in first gear at peak torque. Your performance would be ~10% better with the original diffs Driving an engine at greater than peak torque RPM is like driving with an exhaust brake on. Thats where a large chunk of that 37% fuel increase is coming from, and why most report that their fan rarely cycles, you no longer have all that excess fuel burn heat to dissipate… great video!

    NICE! My 1083 will do at least 83 mph. Yeah it was stupid...but somebody had to do it.
    And I have not heard the BIG FAN since I installed the hubs.
    The truck is SO much more user friendly.
    Also, I talked to an Allison tech and he says he can reflash the TCM to start off in 1st gear. Which would be really helpful.
    It's on the list...

    Coming from a 4x4 off road background I can say the benefit of gear reduction hubs is that they reduce the torque applied to the driveline from large dia tires. So doing this will double the torque on the differentials and ujoints and transfer case. This will also cause the engine to actually lug below the PowerBar and likley increase your fuel milage. This would only be a benefit if in most driving situations you find that your engine is reving at the top or above recommended rpm range on road. My worry will be breaking drive axels or ujoints when offloading in low range as they are now being asked to do double the load they were designed to do. But I doubt you would actually drive your litteral house as hard off road as the vehicle is capable. CHEERS AND SAFE TRAVELS Steve h.

    Hey Mike I just finished binge watching all the videos in this series. I am impressed with your truck and all the work you did. it turned out fantastic. On your in cab video, you showed the AC center console. Did the folks you bought the truck from install the AC or did someone else and is the AC system of the installers design?
    You mentioned you're not a mechanic in this video and you weren't sure of the reason for the shims etc. That's okay I think I can explain if you'd like. If you remove the shim, you'll notice a nut behind it. That's the wheel bearing nut and like on most cars they use a cotter pin to keep the nut from backing off. In this particular hub, it used the 2 pins and inner gear that you removed to keep the wheel bearing nut from loosening. The inner gear was splined to the spindle to keep it from turning. So you can see that there was no way for the bearing nut to come loose. Keeping the inner gear splined to the spindle allowed the axle, (which you called the drive shaft and were careful not to pullout) to turn the outer gear which was floating. The outer gear came in contact with the 4 planetary (spider) gears which spun on the cross. As the planetary gears were being turned by the outer gear and rotating on the cross but being held stationary by the inner gear the only thing they could do was move the cross and it does it at a 2:1 ratio. The cross was held in place by the hub and the tire is attached to the hub. So the cross is what drives the truck down the road. Phew, that's a lot, so now we'll get back to the shim. The shim is used to take up or set the backlash between the inner outer and planetary gears. I know you used the recommended silicone sealant on the hubs, but I found a much better product It's an International Harvester brand silicone sealant T-442. On those Eco gears, all they need to do is machine out the inside diameter of the part the snap ring hits, problem solved. If they say it will make the part weaker there's plenty of room to make the outer diameter bigger and not interfere with the 12 bolts holding it on. Thanks for sharing your truck build.

    Definitely makes sense by removing the planetary/spider gears that the vehicle would yield better fuel mileage and increased speed by reducing the friction points .
    Perhaps the main purpose for the complicated gears is to manage turns on such a heavy truck. However , after 2800 miles seems like so far the benefits outweigh whatever features the spider gears provided.

    • @drivetheglobe
      @drivetheglobe  2 месяца назад +1

      I think the gears were put in by the military to hit some certain spec that was in the requisition. Not sure what that was but thats what I figure. For most of us I think these are all positive.

    • @cropperr
      @cropperr 2 месяца назад +1

      @@drivetheglobe The truck specs required that it be able to navigate an 18" vertical wall. Thus the tire size - to ride up over an 18" wall the wall must hit the tires below the center line sufficiently to climb it easily. The gear reduction is for that, and for the boundary conditions of the largest MTV (M1089 wrecker for example) pulling it's full rated capacity up the steepest possible grade. A combined weight of about 90k pounds. For such a load the hub reductions would very likely be required to even get the whole mess moving up a grade.

    Hi, I saw the episode that deals with changing the hubs, 75 miles per hour maybe in your dreams and if so then maybe for a few seconds downhill. And even then, it's very, very unsafe, and with a vehicle that weighs 15 tons, you should also have some responsibility regarding your data advertises. Do not forget that among your scouts there are many off-road truck drivers. another thing that I wanted to write to you for a long time, you don't drive the globe as you present yourself, you drive and travel especially in the USA, there are those here who have traveled through Asia on the Silk Road, crossed Russia to Siberia, visited all the countries of Northeast Asia, iran, all of Europe, africa and more and more so, I think you need to practice some modesty. besides that you have a nice channel, personally your bike trips are not interesting and you can also see that they have much less views. I hope you can accommodate a negative review as well, good luck.

    • @drivetheglobe
      @drivetheglobe  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you for your comments. I am very direct so hope that is OK. Yes- the truck will easily travel at a consistent 75 miles per hour (except uphill) . I very rarely do as I tend to avoid highways. I'm not sure why you would consider that unsafe. Semi rigs routinely drive at that speed and are far heavier. I respectfully would like to correct you on the driving the globe part. I have traveled to over 120 countries on 5 continents including almost every country in Africa, the middle east, Europe and much of Central America. I am not sure why you would say that I have not just because it hasn't been in the past 3 years? The bike trips are followed by far less people, however, the viewership is also far more interested based on a much higher total minutes watched result. So for those who don't like cycling- just skip those videos. Thanks again for watching- but most importantly get out there and travel.
