So I always feel like towns that have an odd kind of landmark are usually unreasonably proud of it (I assume for tourism reasons), no matter how silly it is. So, since this was a mining town, why not have "The Big Nugget": just a big, oddly shaped and oddly colored rock? Maybe have it gold colored and shaped like the nugget that founded the mine there originally?

Trains aren’t slow in Australia. We don’t have high speed rail, if that’s what you mean, but our normal trains run at normal train speeds.
A quick Google will tell you that the National train speed limit is 160km with the average speed for the XPT (regional link trains that run between cities) being approx 113km/hr. The XPT speed record is 193km/hr.
Trains within a city have a speed limit of 130km/hr with an average 43km/hr because they barely have time to build up to top speed before the next stop.
Just because city trains go at slower speeds doesn’t mean Australian trains are slow. They go slow in cities all over the world and faster in the country. It’s just how trains work.

Maybe something with aspects of Ballarat and Seymour? Ballarat has a living museum that's based off of an old gold mine, it also has lots of historic buildings and a heritage tramway (all the big regional cities in Victoria had tram networks that were very small) and Seymour is basically a quintessential railway town, they've still got all the old rail infrastructure there from back when the railways were a lot bigger. Might be worthwhile to take a look.

    • @billdoggonejones

Also, most regional towns have ANZAC memorials in them in the center of the city.

Names for the town that I think might work:
    - Tailings Bend (it’s at a bend
-Aurum Creek (Aurum being the latin term for gold)
    -Miner’s Rest
-Macquarie Creek (there’s way too much stuff in Australia named after Macquarie. Feels like a good name to use as a fallback).
A small suggestion with regard to the park: I feel like maybe there’s a bit of a larger park there, not too large, just large enough to contain a small sporting field, thinking a rugby field (I figure there’d be a cricket oval elsewhere in town). On a side note, I feel like the park there might occasionally be used as a market space, or a small rural showground. Or perhaps not here, but a few of the towns dotted around should probably have those. Another side point, definitely need to get some props made for outdoor barbecue areas. It’s such an Aussie thing that I feel like it has to be represented.

Maybe the ‘big thing’ could be in that empty corner to the right of the highway? They seem to usually be placed right next at a highway for maximum exposure as you’re driving passed :)

I have another example of a bridge that was once being used but is now not used as commonly. In the swiss town of Baden, there's the old bridge which connects to the medieval town and it's made out of wood, we call it Holzbrugg (wooden bridge). The main bridge, which is way higher up, has all the traffic and connects to the big roads, we call it Hochbrugg (high bridge). Your new town is so interesting to me because I go to school in Baden and I can see these bridges all the time

The "big thing" should be a giant pickaxe, or something along those lines to pay homage to the towns mining history.
Also, the giant pickaxe could be an entrance or attraction for the "this towns name" museum of mining and engineering. Also paying tribute to the towns mining but also the engineering it took to create the roads and infrastructure just to get to this location and start a town.

I've done Sydney-Dubbo or Gunnedah/Tamworth trips many times passing through Bathurst Orange etc so what you're constructing really resonates. By the way, just noted there's a mod called SingleTrackAI in the workshop that will help with the single track theme we have in Australia. A train won't enter that section apparently if another train is on it. Haven't checked it myself but worth a look maybe. Cheers.

I think I know how to make waiting tracks. Vanilla CS has this route modification that allows you to turn off or on traffic lights or add stop signs. On junctions on tracks you can place stop signs which turn into signals. If you put the “stop” sign on the markers, it would act like another place to stop. Also for the blank area you left at the end of the video, maybe take inspiration from the tracks in the QLD-NSW border. The swerving tracks could be useful. I live in Brisbane and trains are very fast here, faster than the ones in Sydney :) .

Another great episode. Definitely build something "big" in the town, its quite common in NZ too. Check out the big carrot in Ohakune, the big L&P bottle in Paeroa. Also a horse racing track is really common in NZ rural towns, looks like they exist in Aussie towns too. You pretty much did it already, but have a look at the Raurimu Spiral. Its a single track railway that negotiates a 139m height change using switchbacks and tunnels. I hope you're not done with Dundee - I know things a scaled down but that city could be twice the size. And the beach area your created a couple of episodes ago could use an ocean side pool in the rocks, like Bondi Icebergs ;)

A spiral with some bridges and short tunnels would be good. There are 2 spirals in NSW as well - Bethungra in the south and Border Loop in the north. Or he could have gone full Lithgow 10 Tunnels - maybe a bit overkill on a CS map though.

On the commuter trains I work on (Stockholm, Sweden) 40 is the speed we go whenever a certain safety procedure calls for it. For trains it’s really incredibly slow, meaning even a long train of several hundred meters will be able to stop quickly.
If we discover that we have people hanging on the outside of the train (thrill seekers) we lower to 40, until we reach the next stop.

    • @daveg2104
      @daveg2104 3 года назад

The rural (and even interstate) train lines in New South Wales are mostly still steam era grades and alignments. Couple that with the fact that there isn't a huge population out in the countryside, and there isn't a big incentive to improve them. So there isn't a lot of opportunity for long high speed runs. Freight trains don't care quite so much about speed, but a new freight line is being built between Victoria and Queensland across inland NSW, bypassing Sydney, and a lot of the more mountainous areas.

  • @KiroWhitefin

If you make each track one-way and provided you are running the mod that supports single-track train AI, they should actually wait for each other. The issue is congestion stacking up from either side so the trains can't enter the line any more. If you have complete control over how much traffic the track can have ( no external connections) it should still work fine.

Maybe you could do a sort of thing where a new highway. is parallel to an old one similar to [4] Western Motorway, and [44] Great Western Highway. And when it starts to get out of the metro area the new highway could terminate onto the alignment of the old highway. By this i mean doing like what happened in Lapstone where the [32] Great Western Highway was split and the alignment changed to the [4] Western Motorway, and yet you can still see a path which seemed to be the original aligned of the Great Western Highway between the [32] part and the [44] part.

12:21. Ummmm...That town is right downstream from an earthen dam in a relatively flat area and it's main routes of transportation outside of the town are right in the path of the river. There is NO way this place didn't get hit by a dam collapse in the past! (Which admittedly would be a cool backstory. Well, if you don't count the death, that is.)
Edit: 20:55. Yep. This area definitely had to have suffered from a dam collapse some years ago. Not only would the water have followed the natural course of the river, the topography up in the surrounding foothills would also push it onto a one lane road and a major railroad bridge, destroying both with ease! I refuse to believe this area somehow hasn't suffered from a dam collapse yet. Also, putting a full two lane highway on an earthen dam is just ASKING for a disaster...

Love the new town! Given it's on a creek and west (I think) of Dundee, what about West Creek? Were you intending on doing a spa/water town? Where spring water is bottled. Near the dam might make sense!

If you’re basing things of Bathurst - how about a bit of a mountain town halfway between this town and the city?
Base it off of Katoomba or Blackheath?

The railway line could probably do 50 on those tight corners, up to 70. Trains don't slow down that much over an old bridge, at that point they'd repair or build a new bridge next to it.
I'd really like to see a tunnel near the summit, and an old zig-zagging line (train stops and reverses) that isn't used anymore, like Lithgow has.

And- keep in mind, a train can't climb much more than 3%. The network multitool's slope feature will tell you what the slope profile is. You could probably do 4% or even 5% as a fudge if absolutely needed, such angles are hard to see in the game if you use them sparingly!

I highly doubt there is an asset for it, but the Big Gold Planner would be perfect. Not only for the IRL Bathurst (also a former gold mining town), but the lore for this town too

Not exactly a 'big thing', but maybe this new town can be known for it's train museum! The museum showcases historic trains from Oceania in their community created Oceania livery

Since your making a city like Bathurst, Any plans to make Mount Panorama racing circuit? The workshop has the race track assets to achieve this.

The landscape over there will be very suitable for a nice winery, but please, no goon!

Here’s a name for the new town, Picton, it’s a small little country town in New Zealand and Australia, it feels like a comfortable name for a little town

I feel that the XPT and Endeavour trains are great for the regional lines, however for the city in order to be more representative of more of Australia/NZ avoiding the double deck Sydney trains would be good. Something like the Melbourne metro Comeng train would be a better fit.

personally i would set line speed based on the curve radius and level crossings, as basically all level crossings in game have full active protection. gradient wouldn’t play too much not a part in speed limits, but no more than 1 in 30
