Hey friends! A few things.. You can download the Awdry Map here steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3414112038 Please let me know if there's any problems and I'll fix em up. If you're super eager for the next episode it's available for Patrons and Members.
@@TiernanOleary In the (vague and undefined, so obviously he could have it so the currency is AUD) timeframe this cities set in, Australia would've still used the pound! So he'd also be 2 pound and 4 shillings
imho the worst part of this series is when the episode ends. i could literarily watch this with 100% attention for hours. everything about this is perfect
I am a road engineer grad, tips for 1960s road engineering: Make the roads wide, some aspects are rarer (crosswalks), a lot of awkward intersection configurations that prioritize vehicle traffic over pedestrian.
Considering you'll be laying down tracks pretty soon, I'd like to share a technique I use in my cities: I use IMT to place custom catenaries over rails (as a prop line). No fiddling with height or aligning them left/right. You just have to fidddle with the spacing settings and then copy/paste to other networks.
Man this series is so lovely. I really like the idea of naming locations after notable people in the community. Like maybe the town next to Sullivan is gonna be named "Revo Beach" or something like that, or the 2nd largest town on the islands opposite side might be named "Port Avanya". I am actually curious about one thing though. Are there gonna be trams in Sullivan? I know you probably have recorded other episodes already but I just feel like whether to have trams or not to have trams is a big decission pretty early on. And a lot of Australian cities did still have trams in the 60's, even if on a decline (though of course this is more of a whimsical mish mash of multiple time periods in that rough period). I do know theres some great Melbourne W class models on the workshop that would be a great fit. The W class is just iconic. And Sullivan looks like it could maybe have 2 tram lines going across it and maybe 3 bus lines? Time will tell but thats just my gut feeling.
I love the name Port Avanya! And yes I’m planning to add trams in Sully. Even thinking about the steam powered one even though it’s a bit before this time. There’s a great asset of it on the workshop, it might save it for another spot. Regardless yes!
One thing that might be a nice detail in this series (whilst perhaps a bit niche on my end, lol) would be perhaps to see what could be done about traffic lights. Whilst automatic, timer-ed lights have existed since the 1920s in big cities, some traffic signals were still operated in a booth by traffic controllers up until the 50s. I’m not sure how this applies in Australia, but I know my great grandparents had to drive from where they lived to larger towns in order to have driving lessons with traffic lights when they were younger
WOW! This series is going to be so good! This is an awesome start, and I can already see the potential of the map and town locations. And I love that you're making this in CS1 (the BEST CS). So cool to see a new series in this game. I hope someday CS2 gets to this level, but sadly for now, it is still in diapers.
Gosh this is such a captivating series and really reminds me how great the original game was/still is. It's a shame that the sequel just...doesn't hit this hard. Feelin' the same in the Planet Coaster community, honestly...but this is lovely! The creativity and awesome design is inspiring. Very excited for this "model train" series.
Thanks you for giving us the possibility to play with your fantastic map for free. You are one of the best map builder of the CS community, and I really want to thank you for sharing with us, your inspiration and creativity, the way you build your maps and your cities through all your projects since all these years. I have used your Oceania map since 2021 (that I modified a bit) and it is genuinely thanks to your work that I still play CS for almost a decade.
Taking some inspiration from the Railway Series, I think when you place the railroads it would be cute to have a through-running branch line that wraps around the bottom of the cliff and goes toward the north (in the video) of Sullivan and the future town location you mentioned. In the RWS there is the Little Western branch line that through-runs at Tidmouth. I even think a station at the mouth of the Avenue you were planning would make for a very interesting beach-front station and perhaps a Victorian-style tourist beach before going onwards to the future town location.
I've always thought the scale of the landscape compared to the roads in CS is off. Looking at a blank map, everything looks fantastic. Then you put down the first road and realize that barely noticeable slope is like a 30% grade. Then the auto leveling process creates bulbous transitions between the road surface and the surrounding landscape, making for terrible building areas. And you get all of the wonky artifacts, like you see here, that you have to fix.
Always a big fan of your work! CS2 is coming along but still can't hold a candle to the variety achievable in CS1. What is the big handsome red brick building? Don't recall seeing it on the workshop and I'd love to add it to my own cities!
I think a city name down the line should be designated the name, Allcroft. The person how introduced the show of the Railway Series, and her recent passing last Christmas is why I chose the name.
She did not write the railway series Wilbert Awdry wrote the railway series she she came up with the idea for a tvshow about Wilbert Awdrys. Books if you do not know that Wilbert Awdry created the railway series YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CALL YOURSELF A THOMAS FAN.
Speaking of which I think we need a Smithville 😉 got to show some love to the people who have been watching the longest. Harryville? Feel free to give me a better name
I love this project you're doing. It's super fun to watch but I do have a couple of suggestions: 1. For the park a fun touch would be adding some benches, a barbecue pit, a playground, and having either an elementary or high school close by. My suggestion for the name of the park is Kaharore which is derived from the Maori phrase "te kaha o ngā rore" that means the place of many bird snares. 2. For future development you should add some trails by the creek the bridge crosses and in the headlands. I don't know if it's super realistic for the 1960s but I think it would be a fun amenity to add for the citizens. 3. A lighthouse perched on top of the hill by the beach and core development of Sullivan would look fantastic. Not only that but I feel it's also a realistic location for a lighthouse since it'd be in close proximity to the main shipping lanes.
Very very cool stuff! It’s re-inspiring me back to CS. CS2 will be awesome one day, but the assets are just so polished. I really appreciate it, looking fwd to new eps. - but I reckon you should have Australian/NSW govt and emergency vehicles. 👍👍
29:06 in the park, beginning at the gazebo closest to the large building, headed toward the sidewalk, I think there should be a desire path cutting through the grass, because a good amount of people would be too lazy to go all the way around that bend if they were taking a shortcut through the park.
I'm both looking forward to this series and dreading it. While it's going to be awesome to watch you build my home city with your own flavour on it, I know the whole time I'm going to be like "Carrington bridge should have been further up Throsby Creek.", "Where's Nobby's?", etc... I'm going to be too critiquey. I'm going to try though. 😋
It would be cool to see a small coastal neighbourhood like Burrill Lake NSW for example in Awdry. It's a small getaway holiday location that's rich in history.
You could put a passenger ferry that goes from the downtown over to the beach on the other side of the river. And maybe build some old historic resort or hotel buildings next to the beach over there. Like some place the city people would go in the weekend to relax and get out from the city.
Welcome back in the only game where creator's skill really meter and where you can really create something unique! Honestly someone with your skill is a bit wasted at the moment in cs2.
The bridge reminds me of Story bridge in Brisbane. Maybe some inspo from 60s Brisbane would be cool, fits the smaller city vibe as well compared to Melb/ Sydney. Especially with the snaking river!
Nice video, nice map, will definitely have to DL that. Those buildings are fantastic. Something's been bugging me a bit, though, and it's taken the full length of the video to work out what I think it might be. I'm not sure a bridge as ornate as that would be in the place it is, on the coast, especially leading into an industrial area and through a place out on a limb to a road where people wouldn't naturally go - through a swamp and stuff. I think it would be better suited well up river near the hills. Maybe a plane concrete flyover bridge would be more suited where the bridge is, but what do I know? Keep up the good work mate, looking forward to the next installment
Great to see you back in the best game out there. Why don't you try wearing the roads on the bridge with Intersection Marking Tool? Instead of a line, use a decsl (e.g. road wear by Ronyx) to create a more worn look. ISM is the mod of 2025 out there. Time to use it properly, 2D20!
Fun fact, if you were to correct your channel's name by the evolution of inflation of the U.S Dollar since your first video, then you'd be named two dollars eighty-two by now.

unbeatable game, even after 10 almost years

Nice to see the return to the original game. Thanks!
It’s really great to be back
I like how you used the Szabadság híd (Liberty bridge) from Budapest, Hungary. I see it every day and it made me smile seeing it here too :)
my god the sims 1 music is bringing me SO MUCH nostalgia. And so fitting, since that game when it came out was also made insired by the 50s/60s!

I defintely think trams on one or two of the main streets would really help cement it into the time period
I was thinking the same thing and Im glad you got there first. Commenting so that hopefully more people see this

Nice start to Sullivan $2.20. CS1 lives on with you & a few others I watch.
Note that you can remove fences from those Australian houses by renaming the building if need be
So happy Cities Skylines content is still happening. 💜
"This is gonna be based on 1960's gotta think how cities were 50 years ago!" Is this case of 1990 was 20 years ago?

God I love Cities Skylines 1
You can redraw the ship paths with find it so that your harbour can be wherever you want!
I suggest a bush area like a forest be named after City Planner Plays' iconic Verde Beach series - perhaps Verde Bush (which also means green bush!)
It would be cool to see a small coastal neighbourhood like Burrill Lake NSW for example in Awdry. It's a small getaway holiday location that's rich in history.
