Is Lanai Worth a Day Trip? | A one day Lanai itinerary with the ferry from Maui

- Update: We recommend parking in the public lot across from Kam III Elementary School. This lot is only for 3-hour parking and meter maids have been aggressive lately. We recommend taking a taxi/Uber to the harbor or finding all-day parking. Come early for free all-day street parking (check the signs).
You bet Lanai is worth a day trip! Let us show you the things to do on Lanai for a perfect day. Hop on the ferry from Maui to Lanai to enjoy the beach, tide pools, Lanai City, and more.
The ferry from Lahaina, Maui to Lanai is about 45-minutes. Once you arrive, it is a 5-minute walk to one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii. Enjoy snorkeling in a marine preserve and take the kids or your partner to the tide pools on the east end of the bay.
There is a lot to do on Lanai for the day, more than we can cover in this video. Check out our Maui Adventure Itinerary for more things to do, places to stay, and the best food on Lanai.

I love the energy on the island, it’s calming and chill...good vibes ❤️
How was Larry Ellison allowed to buy Lana’i?
Good question. Chairmen of Dole and descendent of Sanford Dole put the island up for sale for a billion dollars. Larry bought it for $300 million. Land rights and property ownership in Hawaii is a dark and complicated tale, especially with the plantations.
As a long time Lāna’i resident I loved your video of our island but want to let others know we also have a taxi. See you on Lāna’i!
As always a great video thanks...
This island is the type i think of when i think of this state. It seems absolutely surreal. Great video!
I’m visiting Maui right now and I just purchased tickets to visit Lanai because of this vid. Thank you guys, keep up the good work!!
That's great to hear! Go early so you can get free street parking for the day.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Will do! Thanks for the tip
Wow, you convinced me! Lanai is a must see for me. What a informative and enjoyable video. Thanks. 😊
I have visited this beautiful island. I thought once was good, but after watching this video! Would definitely go again. Thank you
Love it. We had the best time on Lanai. What a beautiful, unspoiled place and magical, magical beach.
yeah, that beach will have us going back. Hopefully to swim with dolphins next time.
I live in Lanai I give it a thumbs up it is so worth a trip I hope you guys enjoyed it
Love your videos very informative and such beautiful shots from above!
Mahalo guys for this video! On all of our visits we have often wondered wether it was worth our while to visit Lanai, you have just convinced us it’s a definite thing for our next trip! Cannot believe that the little guy is growing like a weed, doesn’t seem that long ago that Henry was just a
little sprout! See you next year, I hope!
This is great to know! Thanks for all your tips!
You guys are amazing! Great info!
I will never forget Lahaina.
Can’t wait! First week in July we’ll be there! Great video. Thank you
Thanks for showing us how regular people can visit!
Thanks for the tour, really enjoyed it.
Super helpful video! We’ve been working to decide whether or not to visit Lanai, and I think you’ve made the decision for us! :)
Great to hear it! Call Expedition Ferry to make a reservation for the times you want!
We were fortunate enough to visit Lanai in November 2019. I was able to do snuba!
Thank you for this video. I definitely want to do a day trip in September for my birthday. Mahalo from fabulous Las Vegas! 😁
Really good video! Thanks❤️❤️
Lol when he said "we're moving" I won't even say what I thought he said lol.. you guys have great videos.. awesome family 👍👍👍
The day trip is absolutely worth it. Went last year and had a great time !!
Yes! So glad you liked it too!
Awesome video! Yes, Lana’i is definitely worth it, after looking at the island for so many years, it was an amazing experience to explore the island. Not only is the history of the island interesting, it fills the soul to see the pride the residents have for the island and its future. Mahalo for sharing your family experience with us! Aloha
thanks for watching and sharing the comment!
Great video!! Was wondering if that trip was worth it..... totally! Thanks guys!
Been there many times and it is always a great day.
This is great. Lots of info. It’s one island I haven’t been to. Maybe a flight to Maui will be fun
We just did the trip 6 weeks ago and it was amazing!!!!
This was great! Thank you.
Mahalo Nicole!
Nice review and great footage.
Mahalo🤙🏽
Want to try other places?
We sailed to Lanai from La Haina in 2004 aboard the Paragon catamaran, for the day. Scuba'd (is that even a word?!) off the boat, than went ashore and lunched on the beach. Awesome day, great sail, and the crew was great. It was our 40 th anniversary.
We are big fans of Sail Maui! We are looking forward to doing that trip this summer!
You guys should stay a few days and get to know the locals. Biggest aloha of all Hawaiian islands I know...born and raised here
We are planning on a trip to stay. We get that vibe every time we go!
SAME HERE BORN AND RAISED
Would love to come stay a few days on Lanai!! ♥️🌸🌺
Great video thanks fabulous
😢why I didn’t see this video before….this could have been such a nice place to visit while in Maui …
Thank you for showing us in a well explained way all the places to be and how in Hawai, great job 👏🏼
perfect reason for another trip! See our things to do on Lanai article for more thehawaiivacationguide.com/things-to-do-lanai-hawaii/
Great video
BEST SNORKELING EVER!
Saved 10% because of y'all. Thanks so much. Booked a tour with Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel to Lanai and since we're staying at Aina Nalu, we can just walk there in the morning to the harbor.
Perfect! Aina Nalu is a great place to stay, have a wonderful time snorkeling. We are doing that snorkel tour next week!
Wow what a pretty beautiful place! 👌🏻😍🌈🌸💖🎉
when the sun is out, Lanai City looks a lot better!
Mahalo Erica and Jordan! We’ve been on island (Maui) for a week now.
Late flight out so we’re going to Lana’i for a half day excursion.
Your vacation guide was super helpful. Mahalo!
Heading to Lana’i is a great idea for a late flight out. Thanks for watching and great to hear your trip went well.
Went to Lana'i for my Maui honey moon 2021 and we both loved it. The jeep rentals were so worth it. Definitely recommend going to Lana'i. The beaches next to the ship wreck we had them to ourselves. Respect the locals though.
One of our favorite Maui activities.
Do you want new travel locations?
Watching the video again for Henry 😍
Love lanai’i. We highly recommend going with trilogy. Such a complete day.
👋 lovely
Thank you for this video. We visited Maui earlier this month. Although we did take an amazing whale watching tour, we didn't take the ferry to Lanai. Next time for sure.
Oh Lahaina you were so beautiful. Wish I could walk down baby beach everyday again😫
My wife and I have stayed on Lanai' many times. It is worth it!
What a a tree before the boat ride.. Very cool looking
The banyan tree is awesome. A great place to chill under.
I’ve always wondered if it was worth it to spend the say on Lanai. I’ll have to see if we can fit this in on our anniversary trip this fall. Thanks!!
Book a stay at the Four Seasons Lana'i while you're at it Dayna!
Nice video! The only quibble would be skipping Garden of the Gods. It’s pretty amazing, like being on Mars.
We will do it on our next trip. A lot more to see on the island. We ran out of time on this day trip but thanks for the tip!
I went to school here. My dad was ichiban for dole. Been back to hunt.
The meter maids gave us a ticket . Parked across from kam 3 elem school.Left for lanai at 9:45 am and came back at 3:15 pm trip.
So find parking for 8 hours($5 parking near front st). Our parking ticket cost us $60 .
come on noobs!!! you forgot one of the coolest things on Lanai - Lanai Cat Sanctuary
DejaVu. We camped and hiked there in '81 and '95, pre-Ellison. We flew from Maui on a small prop plane. In '95 there was a Kona Wind which made snorkeling dangerous.
That sounds like a great trip. I'd of loved to be on the island back then.
I just got back from kauai imthe last time I was in Maui I stayed on Kaanapali I was always so interested in that little island in the distance. I REALLY wish I had went. Next time for sure!!
hop on the ferry to check it out!
We are planning to make a trip to Lana’i in July! So excited after seeing your video! Do travelers have to take another covid test before getting on the ferry?
No they don't, just fill out the travel paperwork again and a temp check. Have a great trip in July!
@8:30 "Lanai has only 3,000 residents, making it the smallest inhabited island in all of Hawai'i."
You forgot Ni'ihau. Slightly bigger than Kaho'olawe, it has a population of maybe 100 residents.
Hi guys! I recently found your channel, and I love it! So much information!
I have a question for you. We have never been to Hawaii and we are looking to go this July. We are looking at Airbnb in Oahu, and I am just wondering how hot it gets during the night? Most places I see have either a window AC unit or no AC at all. Would you suggest that we definitely get a place with AC for July?
Also, we are having a heck of a time finding somewhere in Oahu due to the laws that are being implemented for short term rentals? Any suggestions? How is the situation in Maui?
Thank You!
Rebecca
Hawaii stays the same temp night and day and year round because of its position near the equator and low elevation. Between 65-85 degrees night or day, any season. It’s kinda awesome.
Heartbreaking seeing the lahaina harbor and banyan tree 😢
YES PLEASE
I had no idea ferries were a thing from each island!!! 😱 I guess it’s not for all the islands, but boat travel would be so easy!
Only Maui to Lanai
@@michaelmiller2475 no other island have any ferry or boat travel? 😢
Maui to Molokai too. They tried a ferry service to each island about 11 years ago but it got canceled for a few reasons.
yes yes yes and yes!!!
Also if we experience the sunrise at Haleakala early morning, what else can be done after this in the nearby area to cover?
Is the sliding sand trail close by and doable?
Also, can it be combined with the Pipiwai trail, Banyan tree, etc?
That and your Hanauma Bay question are all included in our itineraries! That's where we go into the most detail on what to do and have excursion days that get you out seeing things on carefully planned routes: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-recommendations/best-hawaii-itineraries/
I can heartily recommend visiting the Lanai Cat Sanctuary located near the airport. People capture, neuter, and then care for feral cats in a humane and loving environment in an effort to protect native Hawaiian birds. Currently there are more than 600 cats living in this cat friendly paradise. Visitors enjoy being surrounded by dozens of friendly cats begging for your attention. Don't worry, the grumpy cats avoid people in this spacious compound.
Heard Taylor Swift's "Anti Hero" mentioned an island turned into a cat sanctuary. J.S. Always LOVED Bob Barker's message of spaying cats and dogs.
Wow how the weather in dec i have to visit this island 🏝 🙃
Went there for a weekend a few years back..happened to have a friend who lives there that took the weekend off to show me around. Not so bad if you're a "beach" guy; besides that, nothing else going on there. Only have one gas station and I think only one traffic light. BUT, if you're into drinking and jointing w/friends, while having the biggest opihi, wild pig, and venison meat grilling on the 'cue - then, damn, this is the place. I doubt, however, that most of you are into that, LOL//
Who’s your friend??
Thanks. I’ve been waiting on your take on a Lanai day trip. Molokai next?
Mahalo! we are planning to do Lanai again soon. We are going to Molokai once the pandemic is well over.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide if you aren't going to Molokai now what makes it safe for you to go to Lanai? The pandemic is still happening. The locals don't want your disease. They had no choice but to open.
@@heatherh3330, They live on Maui and there is ferry which runs between Maui and Lanai everyday. They have to fly to Molokai and inter-island travel requires testing both ways etc. It’s not really worth it right now.
@@hotmessjess3390 my point exactly. This is not the time to be promoting travel anywhere in Hawaii. I live on Maui and the fact they are new here and advertising to tourists to come here during a spike in cases, or at all during a pandemic just kills me.... and most of the people I know feel similar. Been here since 93.
@@heatherh3330 🤡
Don't forget to take Henry to the Lana'i Cat Sanctuary. It's a fantastic experience!
we have gotten a lot of comments on the cat sanctuary, we plan to go next time!
hey! It looks like you guys went pretty recently so I have a question - are car rentals available right now? I'm going to maui in 5 days and we're wondering if we can squeeze in a day trip to lanai!
Thanks in advance 😊
call local places for rental cars as the island is running out. Also try Turo. be flexible on the days you need a car. A trip to Lana'i means you won't need a car for the day!
Hey!! We were on the cacao farm tour with you. I was wondering if you had a you tube channel and lo and behold!!
Thanks for finding us! That was a fun and informative cacao farm tour!
YES!!!!
Could you please make video on Hanauma Bay. Can we reserve tickets in advance for this?
We share info in our Oahu snorkeling video. You can't reserve tickets. We give strategies to enter in our Oahu itinerary: thehawaiivacationguide.com/oahu/
You need to incorporate Paradise Helicopters into your itinerary. They are wonderful people.
The public parking you recommend in the video, across from the school, is only good for 3 hours according to all the signs.
Neat and quaint little island . Are these shuttles waiting by the harbor, so we can embark on the tours?
only Expedition Ferries and they leave every few hours, check their schedule
Smallest inhabited island is Ni'ihau. And feel free to come to Moloka'i. Just respect the aina, be polite, be respectful and use aloha liberally.
Wtf hell naww molokai has the worst data service, expensive food, and just overall boring. Lanai is way better
Cool story bro. Don't come back. Or just keep insulting the locals who know the secrets of the island.
Wondering when you booked tickets for this? I am coming to Maui in July and would love to do this! When I go to book, it says there’s no availability until November :(
You need to call them to make a reservation for the boat. We booked a day or two in advance. But if you know when you want to go, book early!
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thank you for letting me know! I will have to call them 😊
May be a stupid question, sorry, but did you walk from the beach to the tidepool in 20 mins or drive?
It’s a two minute walk from the beach
Nice video. Really enjoyed seeing the town and hearing about it. Have you ever gone to the Lanai Cat Sanctuary? That’s the place I would really like to visit on Lanai.
Did you have to covid test there from maui?
Is that pickleball sounding in the background of the first few seconds?
GARDEN OF THE GODS?!?!?! ❤❤❤❤❤
We went there on another trip when we got a Jeep rental. We went all over the entire island. Shipwreck Beach was our favorite.
You said the shuttle ride was $10/ person for the ride up to Lanai city, but you never said what it cost to get back. is the fare a round trip or did you spend $60 to get up and back?
It is one way, gotta pay twice.
Were you able to see spinner dolphins at the resting area near four season?
Not on this trip! Better chances of seeing them via a snorkel tour.
I visited Lanai for a 2 night stay in 1989. Was much better then.
I did a sail boat trip in 2019 and throughly enjoyed it! Wish we had more time tho. Highly recommend!
Did you stay till the evening and go back to Maui? Is 1 day enough?
We did one full day but you could certainly find enough to do to fill an overnight stay.
We left on the 5pm boat. There is more to do there and many stay a few nights.
Do you recommend bringing beach chairs?
they can make for a lot to carry but if you like beach chairs, go for it!
I live here!!!
me too! let's do a meetup at my basement
@@mrnarwhal8085 I’m down, where’s your address?
@@mrnarwhal8085 Aight bet, I’ll be there in 5
Awesome! Do you know if there’s ferries to maui?
The ferry goes between Lana'i and Maui and there is a ferry from Maui to Molokai. There are no ferries between the other islands.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide thank you!
Do you know where to ferry las leaving from now
Ma’alaea Harbor but check their website as they may only be transporting residents.
It is worth a trip I live here
did anyone happen to see Tom Cruise there and was he driving a Land Cruiser??
What underwater camera are you using?
GoPro hero 8 works for us
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide great! Thanks!
In 2024 if in Kauai can you ferry to Lani?
No, only from Maalaea Harbor on Maui to Lanai.
It reminds me of Saipan or Palau.
Did you get to see any dolphins from boat OTW to lanai?
Not on that ferry trip. Watch our Lana’i snorkel video as we see dolphins on that trip.
just make sure you know that public parking lot is only for 3 hours, else you’ll get a ticket 😬
Hi do they have a ferry from Ohau?
No ferry. You can ride a prop plane or swim. I'd recommend the plane
Today we took trip to Lanai. Ferry was great. Parking was not good DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT ACROSS FROM KING KAMEHAMEHA III SCHOOL! $60.00 ticket. Very bad advice. Town trip was important but only 4 places were open on Wednesday. Cultural Center does not open til 1pm so can't fit that into the plan very well . Best restaurant is Pele's Other Garden. Snorkeling after about 9am is a bust... Dangerous conditions, hard surf, sandy water, no fish, no dolphin, hard riptide. Need more than one day to see any other sites. Tour are expensive. Maybe try again in a few years...
Hi, can we get Uber in Maui and in Lanai??
Yes on Maui. Lanai has one Uber driver but there are shuttle/taxis
No stay at four seasons?
we wish! for another trip
Did you visit Larry Ellison?
He stopped responding to our calls. Weird
