How Mikel Arteta Just BROKE Man City's System

  • It'll never do down as a classic, but Manchester City and Arsenal's 0-0 draw was a fascinating one from a tactical perspective. Both Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta made massive changes to their side as the game progressed, but with the draw far better for Arsenal, it's the student rather than the teacher who can claim to have come out on top.
Adam Clery examines how, with just one slightly better decision in the final third, the 3 points would have gone back to North London.

He would have had to first touch one time it for the opportunity. Once he mistouches the first touch its too late with how solid city are. 100% arteta was fuming he missed it, but to be fair it was a very hard play to make because you have to either have a flawless first touch at full speed then quickly lead the pass, or you have to one time it at full speed. The only thing that was a little upsetting is that Trossard has been known to make a play that difficult throughout the season and even a few pivotal moments in the CL that required his brilliance. In a game with such few chances, that one moment gets amplified.

Lets be honest Gooners are a special team , , They had been criticized for not having a striker, Then they went on 8 Games scoring more than 30 goals in the process
They play Porto away, got blamed for not wanting to concede
Came back home penetrated through a tough low block to score the much needed goal to equalise.
Yester they played the best team who beat Bayern/Madrid/Inter and won everything , the game was at Etihad , now the defended well and get blamed for that.
BUT no one talk about how they are able to defend when needed and attack when needed, we talking about a team that score more goals and conceded few - remember that!
I concluded that Pundits will never stop criticising this team ,, they wish this was Lampard/Gerard who is doing this , the fact that its Mikel not seating well with Punditry Englishmen

And yet, we can all agree that this is another step in Arsenal's growing evolution. We all know that Arteta's men can play free-flowing, high press suffocating, attractive "halal" football. But to get everyone onboard to switch 180 degrees and play park-the-bus, concede-20-fouls, put-you-to-sleep "haram" is also somewhat impressive.

When City had controlled possession in Arsenal's half, Arsenal defended in a low-block system. This means that the distance between Arsenal's defensive lines and their goalkeeper was kept at a minimal. This consequently meant that one of Haaland's main strengths which is running in behind from Kdb's through balls was largely cut-out. I'd have preferred Pep to have taken out Haaland and either moved Foden in that false 9 role or brought in Alvarez to play that role. The combination of Haaland and KDB was simply not working against a well-organized and defensive-minded Arsenal. Had Pep brought in Alvarez or moved Foden to the middle, it would have allowed City to play quick passing combinations to open up Arsenal.
Additionally, Haaland offers very little without the ball. He does not press as intensely as his other City forwards.

In this video its pointed out that last season Arsenal tried to press City and that was the mistake as City thrashed Arsenal. So this year Arsenal was more pragmatic to the press. Because if you press City, they will exploit the gaps.
But Liverpool play the same way. They press high and with so much energy. Yet nothing happens to them. What's the difference with Liverpool's press that even though they press aggresively yet City can't carve a way out?
