  • In 2011 Southern Shorthaul Railroad commenced an operation to haul coal from Newstan colliery to the unloader on Kooragang Island in Newcastle. The loaded 4000 tonnes trains faced an immediate 1 in 40 grade away from the junction of the colliery branch with the main northern line at Fassifern, necessitating the use of bank engines to help with the climb to the summit. The following scenes illustrate some of the locomotive combinations used on this impressive operation.

    Great footage of noise you got there, good spot to see vintage trains hauling up heavy cargo!

    Wow! What an impressive lineup of locos. Great to see the Streamliners and the surprise of the old 48s puffing away. Thank you

    Great video with a very big variety of motive power, wasn’t expecting to see a 48 on the back, and really wasn’t expecting a 42 to be in there as well putting in the hard yards! Thank you for sharing.

    Great video as always, does anyone know the reason around 5.26 (may be some before and after) why they use extension couplings.

      It is something to do with weight restrictions on some bridges? The long drawbars spread out the load over a number of cars? Seems a bit weird but I dont think it is used anymore?

      @@FishplateFilms yep the idea was go distribute the load further. The wagons are still in use I believe, but no other ones have been built since so the benefits mustn't outweigh the costs

    So 13,000+horsepower for A 4000 ton coal train,ok. How much horsepower did two Garrett's need for a 1600 coal train with friction bearings compared to 4000 roller bearings coal train?

      i get this feeling that some of these operators have no idea or just want to play big “trainsets” with their loco lashups…no serious operator would do some of the things that you see in NSW with over powered trains…they’re just big kids with lotsa $s wasted

    Suburban electrification only ?? Freight traffic only under diesel locomotives?

    • @moblet
      @moblet 2 года назад

      The electrification of this line is only 1500V DC. Enough for passenger units but not for freight locomotives.

    Is there that big a shortage of Motive Power that they still use Streamliners and 48s

    • @AustralianRailwayVideos
      @AustralianRailwayVideos Год назад

      I believe SSR use alot of formerly retired locomotives to run their trains, outside of SSR there aren’t many streamliners in regular service that aren’t purposed for heritage. And as for the 48 classes, they aren’t as commonly seen in use anymore.

  • @johnnywarbo
    @johnnywarbo 3 года назад +1

    Those 48 classes should be re-classified as steam engines I hope the greenies don't see this. Great viseo.

      @@sydneytransportvideos8444 The bank looking South to Fassifern station and the bend at the top. It is the ruling grade on the Short North. The colliery line branches to the right in the video at the Northern end of the station. One garratt would load the train and another would arrive Light Engine and couple on. They pushed the train out in reverse onto the main line and blasted their way to the top. Lots of steam leaks near the end of steam. I read a few years ago that Newstan was closing down. A 59 class and a garrett or two garratts would take trains from Newstan South and branch off to the left at Awaba Station to Wangi Wangi Power Station. It was a very polluting station and lots of kids living nearby got sick. Google Earth Satellite photos show the big brick power house building and where the sidings were. In 1968 in the Christmas holidays, the SM at Awaba let my mate and I sleep in the up waiting room. There was still a 36 class based at Broadmeadow, maybe more. Some were put back into service because there was a big upsurge in freight in the late 60s. Some worked to Goulbourne. The engine crews wanted them gone because the reversing wheel took so many turns and they did not want to work pick-up freights. Some were fitted with power reversers from 38 class. My mate was asleep and I could hear the beat of a steam loco for minutes toward the South. I had not heard of the long bank called Hawkmount to the South. All went silent for a while and then suddenly the station shook and a 59 and a 36 thundered past on a freight train. I will always remember the sight of the locos and the open firebox on one glowing orange while I was half asleep. In the morning, double garratts paused their coal train at the station and the guard asked us to get into the van. As we rolled down to the power station sidings, the guard said he was going to cut the van off while they were moving which was against the regulations. He climbed around the side, uncoupled it and slowed it with the handbrake. One of the firemen jumped off and switched points to let the van roll into another siding. They did this all the time to avoid shunting the van to the other end of the train.
      On the Northern end of Fassifern station a line branched off to the left. About ten kilometres long to Toronto on Lake Macquarie. 30 class tanks ran in to Toronto with end platform cars and after the passengers got off at Toronto, it ran around a loop and came back to the station. Sometimes the locos were in reverse for the whole trip. Passengers were not allowed on it while on the loop. I have seen photos of railcars on the line and a 59 class ready to leave Newcastle tender first on a Toronto train. When steam ended, the loop must have been removed because I have seen a photo there just showing goods sidings. I think the railway formation is now a cycle path.

    Is the horse power rating the same as here in the USA, around 4,400 hp per unit?

    • @robertbensley4987
      @robertbensley4987 3 года назад

      HP varies. Details of most are on the operators website www.ssrail.com.au. The C and G class are 3300hp, little 49 class only 950hp. Most are GM/EMD powered except for 48 and 442 which are Alco. Brief appearance of a pair of 47s which have Caterpillar engines and Hitachi electrics.

      The HP in the Locomotives used in this video range from as low as 800hp (48 class ) up to about 3000hp in the C and G class Locomotives

    • @Aaron-uf3sl
      @Aaron-uf3sl 9 месяцев назад

      Mk1 48s (which comprise 4 of SSRs DL531 fleet) put out about 950hp for traction, 47s are about the same, 49s are 875hp. These 3 classes of locos were original meant to replace steam locos on branchlines. Moving up the GMs and 42 are about 1600hp each. 442s are 2000hp and the Cs and Gs are 3,000hp each.
