4K Aging EMD Locomotives Rescue a Stalled Grain Train at Warrenheip Bank

- English - Welcome to another Schony747 train presentation. This time it's a fantastic sounding presentation that is worth turning up the sound for!
Once again some of the former Victorian Railways EMD Locomotives came to the rescue of a Qube Grain Train that had stalled up the 1 in 52 grade Warrenheip Bank near Ballarat in Victoria. G521 and G512 saw themselves stranded half way up the bank with a fully loaded consist of grain wagons. X31 from dating back to 1966 and T376 from 1964 were called on to add the extra horsepower for the final leg to Melbourne.
All locomotives were on line as the stalled train started to move up the bank. The sanders on the locomotives were working overtime as well to stop the train slipping down the grade.

Love the sound of the EMD's ramping up under a full load.
Yes indeed. Proven quality as well.
Wonder what the ammeter readings were at first movement.
@@Schony747 I'm a retired US engineer. EMD's last about 1 day short of forever.
4:56 they tried with 3 locos first but it couldn't pull so they finally powered all four and pulled like a champ. That small front loco did the trick.
Yep! The little engine that could 😀😀
nice love the old school sound of these EMD's.
Those EMDs sounded good.
That's the sound Foamers live for!
Anything from a standing start really but more special as it's on a hill 😀😀
When those old girls found traction they dug in hard and didn't let go and powered up that hill, nice show of old traction being thrashed.
Yes they got off to a shaky start but then nailed it up the bank.
The tension when they try to get going !!! Shows my love for trains !
Yes they put on quite a show for us that day!
Schony747 you lucky person being there !
What a great display of raw horsepower and torque! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for looking 😀😀😀😀
Right-o you two young blokes, hold on and we’ll show you how it’s done.👍
Pretty much 😀😀
Hold my beer we'll be out shortly
Hold on Marge...
This is going to take some serious flooring.
Absolutely amazing sound of an EMD locomotive you are all the way in Australia still has that unique hum
Same mechanicals, different clothes.
Sure the Pilbera iron ore lines have American locos (only slightly modified) inc GE AC 6000 CW's (all now scrapped). But 1 loco on the mainline (former government railways) look the most American, well out of the hood units, anyway. The Western Australian L class. You'd have to look twice to see its not a Yankie, some like an SD (in fact it, along with many locos in Australia, is basically an SD 40 mechanically.
@@johnsergei I'm a retired US engineer. I have to know why all the GE's are scrapped. I'm an EMD man myself, ALCo second, never liked GE engines. I operated GG1's-E33/44 electrics, all kinds of GE's from U25B/C's all the way up those miserable P42's on AMT.
@@gordonvincent731 If were talking early diesels, proir to the 1990s (& the privatisation of Australias State government railways) GE diesels were almost unhered of here.
Evey state had its own idea on how to run its railways & most states, had a different gauge to it neibour, so there was little loco sharing (selling etc).
The early diesels were almost exlusivsally EMD, Alco, English Electric & with small Walkers diesel hydralic hood units (usually with Catapillar engines) as shunters on mainly the narrow gauge systems.
The Emu Bay Railway, a once private mining line in Tasmainia used these little Walker locos, to haul their trains, a bit like a miniture version of the Pilbera trains or an American coal train.
But even 4 x 55t locos is still a decent amount of heavy metal. @ some stage they regually ran fewer but longer trains with 7 locos up front.
These machines were smaller than even most shunters on the government railways & most of these were from those 3 big makers, with few from EMD, (with the exeption of Vicrorian Railways)
Only NSW, Victoria & South Australia had standard gauge or broad gauge tracks & here, even their early diesels were big.
Federal government (that ran the long distanse transconinental lines, mostly in South Australia) used EMDs. NSW has a small number of EMDs. Victorian railways was all EMD (apart from some early shunters & none were Alco or GE) So, wrong state if yuu, didn't like that those 2 strokers.
South Australia was mostly Aloo, with the EE 900 class, one of my favourite locos. There was nothing like them, They look very American, but there was nothing like thrm over there ether. Alco PA looks similar, but inside a 900 you'll find EE 16 cylinder 4 stroke diesel, they stutter, they don't splutter like an Alco.
The biggest system, NSW ordered Alcos, mostly & the private Pilbera mining lines, used Alcos that even today, are too heavy for the governmbent mainlines. Most of those oldies are now gone. They did have a few EMDs up there in the late 70s, but I think they were sold of to an American railroad. Pity that @ least 1 6000CW wasn't saved, but no buyer could be found & like a ship, the scrap price makes selling fror scrap, a viable option. It is 200t of metal after all. Shove it onto a beach in Bangladesh?
Today, You can still here 2 stroke EMDs but only on some trains on certain lines (usually a mixed consist, newer 4 stroke GEs etc) EMD 2 strokers haul some passenger trains in Victoria still (N class) Alcos will be hard to find today, but a few are still in uses. Locos like the NR & similar looking quiet beasts, dominate, nowdays. But once, it was the Australan eqivilent of an F series EMD, or a World Series Alco, based on the FA. or smaller 6 cylinder hood units of those machines.Funny that, the small brancline units were the most numerous, but on the mainline, you saw more of the big stuff.
eh
Always loved the Alcohol chugging
Oh that sound brings back memories of the F units I grew up with
The stuff I grew up with as well. Thanks for looking.
@@Schony747 Come to NZ and you'll hear that on the regular, we're still using Clyde Engineering rebuilt units initially made in the 50s
I'm glad to see the youth of today are involved in positive things like study and helping others, instead of wasting time vandalizing railroad cars.
Well at least some of the art has a bit of skill behind it. It's not the first comment of it's kind and won't be the last either I'm sure.
Damn he knocked the hell out of that other locomotive.
Yeah they didn't do a bad job!
Yeah that was a hard contact hookup, power unit shook when it hit!
Had a short lunch break.
made even more dangerous by crew member standing on locomotive when rule say he should be ground guess he want to be killed
I love the sound of hard working EMDs... of course the American EMD "Geeps" are very common where I live in the Southern US State of Mississippi. The small rail yard behind my house commonly use EMD GP38-2s for switching and pulling locals.
The part from 6:50 to the 7:05 mark.....just wow!!.....love the way it trails off through the trees in a symphony of sound, sand and exhaust........Clyde-EMD muscle 👌🇦🇺🇺🇸👍
Yep from around the 5 minute mark, it's really impressive.
I could listen to that turbo whistle all day!
I could sit and listen to the whole consist all day. Thanks for looking 😀😀
Many years ago I was on a old Red Rattler travelling between North Melbourne and Footscray. Just before Footscray we stopped with an abrupt jerk. Opened the door and looked outside. Saw a stalled goods train ahead. Next heard/felt the electric motors on the Red Rattler spooling up and we, and the goods train, moved off 🙂
That's a great story! And back then when you opened a door there was no harm or bad intentions either!
Great video and camera work!
Watching all that power at work is awesome. These engines must be working close to their absolute limits!
Superb catch, those locomotives were working hard. Great sound
Thanks Paul. Right place right time as I was visiting my parents.
Great video. This is something I have never seen before. Thanks for sharing. Dave
Yep a first for me as well. Plenty of standing starts but not in this situation.
Love the sound of the x model. Reminds me of my childhood when used to given a ride at nyah west. Was good having a grandfather that worked in the railway’s
Made. In. Mc.cook. I'll. Close. 2. Chicago.
Took them and "WALKED THE DOG" on up the hill.....loved it....
Thanks and very enjoyable to see it live as well
It's such a blokes video but I really loved it thank you xx 💖
Girls too ! I fell in love with trains at Dubbo and nearly got run over by steam trains asa kid with my dog
Have facilitated the train thing with my grandkids at timbertown , it’s a vital part of childhood
Us girls can love a thrash and clag Vid as good as any guy.
Saw this train sitting there on my way to work and thought it was a little unusual, now I know why! Cheers
Lets hear it for the "OLD GUYS".
Yes. Plenty of old action in Victoria!
👏
Thank you! Really appreciated.
Thanks for looking. Really appreciated.
In the turn of events, this video was fantastic and Interesting!!
Good to see the old girls are still in service!
Yes and after this video they are still getting lots of mainline work.
older locos to the rescue !
Yes 50 years old and still going strong!
I am glad to see that we in America are not the only ones that paint the sides of the cars.
you're glad???? this country also suffers.
Is called rust prevention.
Love the new standing-idle-too-long-in-the-railyard livery!
Too long in the open in unprotected rail sidings.
That is just the BEST sound. Nothing like it.
Yes indeed. I was pretty happy I could capture this!
I have seen this video a lot of times. It is beautifull listening these old wonders with the EMD roaring inside.
Best sound from a loco mate
We love a Stalled Grain Train on the Warrenheip Bank
We love any freight trains running up Warrenheip Bank
I made that 4 engines dragging 40 grain wagons , rocking it a bit to initially start it all rolling ; way to go mate !
The older EMDs have been quite busy lately rescuing trains in Victoria!
dal daa dala da da da.....as she's really getting going there was a rythmical sound something like that...beaut job ...mighty EMD's are the best
Yeah that's the general consensus about EMDs.
Love the sound of old EMDs... of course where I live in the Southern US, EMD power Geeps are quite common, especially the EMD GP38-2.
My most popular train videos are the old EMDs.
Fabulous sound from the EMD's
Yes an oldie but as popular as ever!
@@Schony747 I used to hang out at spencer St station on the weekends just to hear them pulling out.
Those two G's were never going to get up that grade pulling those loaded wagons. Great vid, thanks.
It's not the first and won't be the last either. There has already been a couple this grain season that have failed as we.
@@Schony747 Seems like the place to be on my next holidays. Chair, esky full of beer and a camera.
I have a mate that lives across the road from that first steep bit of Warrenheip Bank that's still in town, usually where they're trying to get a bit of speed up for the bank itself and by god you can hear the steam trains when they're doing it. It's great.
You can hear the trains all the way back to Ballarat East!
wow great video
Thanks again 😀😀😀😀
Absolutely fabulous to hear and see.
Thanks alot 😀😀
Sure good to hear good old EMD's running. Which are still very popular around the world. And I read that they now come up to Tear 4 final.
Any old EMD that runs in Victoria such as these always draws a big crowd. This train had people out right along the line.
Very nice, even better when there's a loco thrown in the mix with a decent colour scheme as well!
Yes. The X certainly made the train I reckon.
Luvverley !! Enjoyed every minute !
Great. There was lots of waiting around but I enjoyed putting it all together.
Great footage, it's something you don't see ever day.
Not everyday but it's happening more than Qube would like I'm sure. Thanks for looking.
love the old VR colours
The old girls are digging in! Love working in 🇨🇦with old gp’s the noise and smell love it.
Yes I enjoyed filming this evening though it was for the wrong reasons. Thanks for looking.
06:00 I like those engine sound when big diesel locomotives set off. Cool Video! Greetings from USA!
Yes. This has been a pretty big hit already all over the world. Thanks for having a look 😀😀
@@Schony747 No problem! If you have time check out my channel. Thanks.
But the bigger diesels, the 2 square locos from the 1980s, are quieter & the modern locos, (bigger & more powerful still) are just too dam quiet.
All these 4 babies are 2 stroke EMD designs, though the bodies & shape are different to American locos.
When I was a boy , the old locos like the T & X class were all we had round here.
@@johnsergei I noted that the two stalled units appeared to be oriented in reverse of North American practice, with the radiator fans in front, behind the cabs, as opposed to at the rear of the units.
@@whiteknightcat The two G class units (the original locos which stalled) are dual cab. So unless the radiator fans are smack in the middle of the loco, they'll be behind one cab or the other.
EMD train is gorgeous
Nice video !!!
And sound great. Thanks for watching 😀😀
Excellent video! Really enjoyed that thanks.
Great. Thanks for looking 😀
Impressive acceleration really.
Love this. Who on earth could dislike?
There's always someone who dislikes a video.
Probably a environmentalist
That's some serious brute force in action!
Just a bit and as usual.the antiques come to the rescue.
Incredible
Love those EMD engines
Yes mate! A favourite of many.
Thanx Shony love Ur videos!
Thanks always 😀😀
I saw a photo of this consist in the new Motive Power yesterday, with a big cloud of exhaust coming out of T376's exhaust pipe.
There were many photos. The one taken from the elevated view at Warrenheip was very good.
An extra 4000hp or so usually does the trick.
Did in this case. It made a pretty quick escape when all 3 locos fired up!
JS317Productions one of the G’s I presume
@@Schony747 hello my friend I think you need to watch your video again as all 4 locomotive are power on
with regards from big man
More like 2700 hp, the X is 1800 and the T 900
Awesome video
Thanks Mate 😀😀😀😀
The older Loco's be like hold on kids we're goin for a ride.
Thanks!
Thanks for looking 😀😀
Very interesting & well shot; congrats from Canada. Never seen so much graffitti, unreal !
Thanks for watching! These grain cars sit around for long periods so are a sitting duck for our talented artists!
@@Schony747 I don't call them 'artists.' They are graffiti vandals who damage private property.
@@edmundcarew7235 Perhaps it was sarcasm? In any case, I agree. I hate graffiti in all its forms. Even hate those ugly graffiti covered Melbourne lane ways that people rave about.
Beautiful video!
Thanks 😀😀
Excellent video, and wonderful audio!!
Thanksc😀😀😀😀
Great sound, great art work.
Some if these "street artists" would do very well legally if they had the opportunity I'm sure! Thanks for taking a look.
That was an awesome video, love the sounds of those diesels at full power. Not easy to get them momentum up and the train moving uphill. Those traction motors would have been very hot.
It was pretty good trackside!
Cool thanks mate
Thanks for looking mate 😀😀
that was fantastic !
I'm surprised you haven't watched that one before! Thanks for having a look 😀😀
Great video luv it
Great! Thanks 😀😀😀😀
that EMD sound
That's outrageous! 😎
But brilliant video!
Nice, y'all have interesting looking trains and fantastic graffiti down there! Happy Holidays!
These grain consists are like sitting ducks so it's no surprise they get the art treatment.
Looked like it was the first time that driver had ever coupled up...BANG!
That's pretty normal from my observations
In general here in USA the knuckle couplers have a minimum coupling speed of 3mph to get enough force to make a join and push the knuckles closed and locked. I'm going to expect that holds equally true Down Under.
Scott FW thanks, interesting point. I am not too familiar with the Buckeye coupler, but will bear this in mind should I encounter one.
common sight on the Warrenheip bank. Many EMD's have powered to a stand in notch 8. Makes for awesome videoing
Yes. I still enjoy filming there
Such a colorful train :)
Yes it a world wide thing now with locos and a colourful freight consist in tow 😀😀
GM to the rescue..
Yep and not the first time either.
Nice job!
Thanks 😀😀
In the timeless words of Jeremy Clarkson: POWERRRR
Yep and lots of horse power as well!
magnificent.
Yep 😀😀😀😀
Thanks
Thanks alot
Wow!!! Tagging to the extreme.
Nice catch, Wilmer sent me.
Thanks for having a look 😀😀
Highball mate!!!
Thanks 😀😀
Aging EMD Locomotives? Son I think they're already aged!
Yes I well past their use by date but still going strong!
old EMD's: "They don't make 'em like me no more!"
Nope but the modern stuff an has the NRs, SCT etc is pretty good as well.
wow, that horn placement
I'm pretty sure I've seen similar EMD power up here in Queensland. They also have had stalled locomotives sometimes, they were pulling a heavy load up on the crossing into Mareeba where I used to live and needed to get an additional pair of locomotives to pull a particularly long train over the Granite Creek crossing. Very large amount of motive power needed, fortunately at the time they had extra motive power available from other trains in the yard that could be used. I think they would have had to cut the train in half otherwise. On one occasion the train was being shunted back to assemble it for a long freight train haul back to nearby Cairns and they tried to reverse the train up the hill. Train said nope, they ended up getting a pair of 1760D's which were new at the time to pull the train out of the hill and finish assembling it. It's unfortunate but Queensland Rail ended up ripping up a lot of track over the years. Now the only trains that go through are a tourist railmotor.
I'm sure it happens everywhere on the occasion
Great video again, brings back memories, if Big Dave was on the throttle this wouldn't not of happened.
Big Dave you legend
Thanks 😁😁😁😁
@JS317Productions
Keep pumping the wheels with sand & crank it upto notch 8
@JS317Productions
Just need more power
@JS317Productions
Typical G Class throwing the too hard switch, doing the same thing when I was working at Qube
@JS317Productions
Tell me about it, top up the oil, top up the sand, maybe some water, diesel & away you go again.
Awesome 👌 👏
Thanks. It was impressive trackside
Just watched a Rod Williams stall.(El Zorro) at the same location. I would not have thought that 2 G classes stalling on that very same place.
There's been a few stalls this year. Both PN and Qube sharing the honours.
So your telling me these 40? Year old trains had to go rescue at train about 15? Years old
Danjw07 YT the G’s may be newer but are still 25-30 years old (build 1984-1989) and the older ones where low horsepower due to the high number of branch lines in Victoria at the time
There's a story about a Garrett rescuing a stalled diesel and its ore train somewhere near Broken Hill. Pity phone cameras weren't around then.
Good video.
Thanks for taking a look 😀😀
Great Video. Roger 😎 in (England).
Thanks. I haven't had a good look at your channel yet but I'm enjoying what I've seen so far and I look forward to regular subscriber updates!
Best video yet . . . Wonder how frustrating it is for an engineer to be halfway up a hill then to stall? Not sure how they work out the mathematics of a gradient of a hill vs weight of the train vs Loco hp. Cos obviously the sums were wrong here and the train embarrassingly stalled!!!
512 had a traction motor issue which may explain the stall. 6am in the morning knowing Ballarats weather would have been an issue as well with slippery tracks I'm sure!
Title should be the graffiti train omg they tagged it good. Them engines had hard tme getting that to go. Lots of weight behind them engines. Thanks for sharing. Awesome video.
The artists hsve plenty of time for their hobby as this BG doesn't get alot of use. Thanks for looking 😀😀
well that was nice art exhibition on those oil carriers.
Actually grain wagons but art is pretty common on those wagons these days.
So are the wagons just left unprotected a lot of the time or are the artists allowed to spray them over there?
There was a CD train at north geelong lines do you think it was this one
Seriously 41 dislike this video..really.. great video Brendan.. A really good catch I loved the sound
