Fun Fact regarding Commander Keen: John Carmack put a hanged Commander Keen as a kill trigger in Doom 2 because he absolutely hated the game's cutesy aesthetic and used Doom 2 as a way to get back at it. The hanged Commander Keens only appear in the 2nd secret level and is used to unlock the level's exit, for a pacifist run, the Commander Keens have to be killed by the Cyberdemon that acts as the level's boss.
If you're looking for a random weird game that has 2d platformer elements, I would HIGHLY recommend Rain World. You play as a creature at the bottom of the food chain and have you traverse the land while getting food and hibernating, but that's the very VERY basic premise of it. The enemy AI is the best I've seen from any game and the mechanics are incredibly diverse

Yeah back in the DOS days CTRL and ALT with arrow keys was a pretty common control scheme for platforms. If you look at a standard keyboard it makes a certain kind of sense. They're large buttons that are easy to press and back then there was no windows key or function key crammed down there so there was just some empty space between them which made them pretty easy to hit without hitting anything else and your fingers wouldn't feel quite as cramped as if you used, for example, z and x, which is popular with a lot of Japanese games. I'm not really sure when they started to fall out of favor.
So one thing Doug didn’t include was him beating the first boss after like an hour, with him getting more and more frustrated even tho he was playing on the hardest difficulty…
Rain world is another amazing but pretty brutal 2d platformer, though it's more of a 2d exploration game. gives you an brief tutorial and then just tells you to...figure it out. highly recommend.

You should try the GBA version of The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. It's a combination of both a decently hard 2D platformer with hard combat (while platforming).
