    Orchestral backing track is composed by Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist and band founder), and recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (including choir). If this was the only show Nightwish did they could have performed with orchestra, and that would be grand. But logistically and financially, the idea of touring worldwide with a hundred-member orchestra is out of the question, and would severely limit the venues in which they could perform. As much as we'd love to see it, we have to accept the recorded orchestral backing.

    • @cproteus
      @cproteus 3 года назад +9

      Yup. Large venues like the ones they play are poorly suited to ideal acoustic accompaniment. It’s best to have the instruments indoors.

      Could do what Evanescence did, which was crazy... play with local orchestras. Ola Englund had a great interview with Jen Majura where she talked about the experience. Like a day of rehearsal with the orchestra, and go! Probably wouldn’t quite meet Tuomas’ standards, though...

      Marco (bassist and vocalist, but left the band not long ago) - Awesome stage presence and amazing vocals for the parts he gets to sing in other songs. Not sure about now, but in his slightly younger years he could give Floor a run for her money when it came to high notes. (phantom of the opera from end of an era)
      Emppu (lead guitar) - Honestly I generally don't pay much attention to him... ^^;; But whenever he does get solos he's as awesome as the rest.
      Tuomas (keyboard and song writer) - Can't comment on his keyboard skills as I don't know much about it, but the sheer passion, variety and talent in his song writing skills is super genius level imo.
      Kai (drummer) - His showmanship isn't the same as Jukka, but his technical skills are incredible. I forgot who said it, but someone said "he's like a metronome".
      Troy (extra piped instruments and rarely vocals) - Wasn't in this song, but he can always puts so much emotion into his pipe instruments. I personally don't like his singing that much, but his instrumental skills are top tier.

    This band is from Finland.
    Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer.
    Marco is (was - he resigned just recently) playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
    Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
    Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
    Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
    Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
    This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
    It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.
    Here are some suggestions for your next stops:
    -> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.
    -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)
    -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)
    -> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)
    -> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, …
    -> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level
    -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind.
    -> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *)
    *****
    From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.
    -->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
    --> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
    --> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
    -> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
    -> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor
    --> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
    -> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
    --> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
    The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.
    *****
    If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own:
    Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on RUclips as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
    It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.
    *****
    * Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
    Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
    As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.
    One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet.
    Here is the open letter Tuomas / the band wrote towards Tarja:
    nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen
    And here is her response:
    nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_from_Tarja_Turunen
    From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed"
    They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it.

    All of the orchestral music and choirs are on a backing track that we hear during the performance. On top of everything else they do, they have to keep in perfect sync with the backing track for the entire song.
    Floor recently described what she is monitoring with her in-ears and she hears her vocals, the click track, the orchestra and choirs, keyboards, the instruments played by Troy (who you did not see in this performance) and a bit of the guitars.

      The sound engineers talk in some of the album creation documentaries about over 600 tracks which need to be combined and reduced to less than the 250 so the stage equipment can handle during a concert. Of course the final album master mix need to reduce further for an album..

    • @billattercliffe8655
      @billattercliffe8655 3 года назад +8

      @@ecbftl It was in the same documentary as the link I posted. They had over 600 tracks for the "Greatest Show on Earth" and their software had capacity for only 250. A typical pop song has 1/10th to 1/20th the amount of tracks.
      In "Gear Gods" we get a backstage view of the Nightwish crew and Tero showed the Pro Tools software he uses for each show. Every song that could possibly be on the setlist has a program track which has the orchestral and choral backing track, click track and the pyro all pre-programmed. He just complies the tracks according to the setlist provided and sets each one running in turn during the concert.

    Wacken is an annual metal festival in Wacken Germany and they were the main headliner in 2013. Floor Jansen (pronounced Yahn-sen) is the lead vocalist/Dutch Valkyrie Goddess, Tuomas Halopainen is the founder/keyboards and composes virtually all the tracks, Marko Hietala is the bass player and awesome vocalist in his own right, Jukka Nevalainen is the former drummer (Kai Hahto is current and was drummer for Noise) and the lead guitarist is Emppu Vuorinen. They use backing tracks recorded with philharmonic orchestras. You've only dipped your toe into the ocean of Nightwish, pretty sure you'll continue your journey down the rabbit hole. Gabriel Bardac, our Nightwish Army general should be along with history and proper links as suggestions for your path forward (I would say Storytime which is a more straightforward banger or Romanticide which is more hardcore). I already subscribed on your Noise reaction or I would sub again, nice job MrL! Oh yeah, Nightwish is a Finnish band, other than Floor. There's also Troy who is a multi instrumentalist and backing vocalist but didn't appear in this video. Looking forward to more NW!

    • @Arrythmic798
      @Arrythmic798 3 года назад +4

      Before Floor Jansen there was Anette Olzon, who was more of a pop-style singer and struggled to perform many of the songs written until then, so the songs from her era are more of a dumbed down vocally (my opinion, Amaranth for example). Before Anette we had Tarja Turunen, with a very beautiful operatic voice much like Floor. Great example is for example the song Beauty of the Beast. I think Floor's voice is slightly heavier than Tarja's, you can fit example compare this song to their 2004 version of Ghost love score. I'm in love with the early Nightwish :) but that being said, Floor is the only substitute for Tarja that I could approve, still I would want Tarja back.

      @@Arrythmic798 Floor is the perfect lead singer for Nightwish, IMO, because her voice is incredibly versatile. Like Tarja she can do the big operatic pieces, but she can flip right into a more pop style, or a more classical metal style, then back into opera. It's incredible the control she has over her voice. Plus she's huge and gorgeous, which just fits their theme so well.

    • @EagleScoutmano
      @EagleScoutmano 3 года назад +3

      The previous lead singers have already been covered by other responses, but don't go leaving Tarja out of the conversation about Nightwish...
      They wouldn't ever have gotten as big as they are without her unique voice (see for instance how far they've surpassed the popularity of other symphonic metal bands like Leaves Eyes, Epica, and Within Temptation).
      Floor is pretty dang good, too, but not quite as uniquely powerful a voice as Tarja's.

    Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish & singer Floor Jansen, This is a 4 day festival and on this night they were the headliner with 82,000 there . The song "Storytime" from the same show Wacken 2013 will leave you speechless

    Congatulations, you've got your first Floorgasm😎 My advice - never ever pause the video when Floor sing☝️

    This is combined with orchestra and choirs. They made a backing track so they didn't have to take the whole orchestra and choirs with them on tour.

    82000+ people at the Wacken Festival. Nightwish was the headliner on this stage on this, the last and main day of the 4 day festival. You obviously have a keen ear for talent and wonderful musicianship my friend. This is a unique and special song, which would only be composed by Tuomas the keyboardist of Nightwish. They use a backing track for the choirs and orchestration. Just subbed for the ride. See you soon I hope MrLboyd. Peace. ✌

    Has Gabriel shown up yet? He's kind of a lorekeeper for the Nightwish Army and usually has the cogent suggestions. Welcome, you are on the precipice of a deep rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride! The Nightwish Army cometh.

    Great reaction video! As a metal fan I love to see someone’s reaction to a metal band and see them slowly becoming a fan before our eyes! Respect 💯

    Couple things, one I love how the 1st time listening to Nightwish is almost always an instant join of the Nightwish army. That's all it takes is one song. Other people have already hit on Floor's amazing capabilities, (they were blessed with 3 of the most amazing singers on the planet) Two, thanks for touching on the amazing talent level of Jukka. A lot of reactions for some reason ignore the insane level of talent he has, not just keeping time but playing an integral role as an instrument. Honestly from the first time I heard them (I wish I had an Angel was my first song) I was in love with this band. Tuomas is our generations Mozart, truly a world class composer. Finally, one of the things I've truly enjoyed about your videos is you keep so calm (I freakin love your voice) and have such an expressive face. Seeing the "Floorgasm" the first time you hear it is always amazing, and you may have one of the best reactions when she hits that last note with such power and emotion. Thank you, sir. It's a pleasure watching you.

    One thing (there are many more) I love about Nightwish is it all about the music. All members of the band serve the music and step back behind it, also step back when one member has a solo, give him/her the time to shine.

    The genre is what should be popular and played on radios. The talent of all involved is mind blowing. One of my favourite genres
