John Hancock and I will make a SEGA GENESIS BUYING GUIDE soon... what Top 10 MUST OWN games would you recommend? Not necessarily hidden gems...but if you had to only own 10, what would they be?
Thunder Force IV for sure. That game has it all.
Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Earthworm Jim, Sonic 2, Truxton, Ghouls n Ghosts, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Ghostbusters, Space Harrier 2, NBA Jam T.E.
1. Gunstar Heroes, 2. Thunder Force IV (aka Lightening Force), 3. Streets of Rage 2, 4. Contra Hard Corps, 5. M.U.S.H.A, 6. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 7. Strider, 8. Shining Force II, 9. Mickey's Castle of Illusion, 10. Castlevania Bloodlines. Honorable mentions: TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Rocket Knight Adventures, Revenge of Shinobi, Road Rash, Truxton.
I would recommend the Shining Force series. They are great strategy RPG's.
Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania, Sonic, Sonic 2, Shining Force 2, Streets of Rage 2, Wonderboy V, Mortal Kombat 2, world of illusion starring Mickey and Donald, Golden Axe, Moonwalker, Strider (10 is not enough :) )
That gargoyles game is awesome! Loved watching the show as a kid.
The Immortal John is awesome! Always dropping some serious SEGA knowledge on titles I've never heard about. Looking forward to many more, thanks MJR.
I love the fact that you change your opening theme to your videos. You keep us guessing what we will see. Awesome job man!
MetalJesus easily has one of the best gaming channels on RUclips. Your videos are timeless. I can go back to watch videos from years ago (this one's more recent obviously) and still enjoy it and learn more about collecting.
I know this was an older video but it made me happy to see Target Earth get some love. One of my first Genesis games, and I played the hell out of it.
RANGER X!!!!
So glad you guys covered this gem. It truly was an amazing Genesis game. I was trying to remember what the heck the name of it was. Glad you guys shed some spotlight on this much-deserved title. Thank you.
I really enjoy these videos! I am a huge Genesis fan and it allows me to get to see games I have maybe never heard of! Great work and keep em' coming!
Man I love the Genesis SNES and TurboGrafx 16 era! It's when games went from looking pretty good on the NES to looking awesome on the three mentioned above! What a great time! And because of u guys I started collecting for the Genesis, and hopefully the other two 16 bit consoles as well!!!!! Great job guys!!!!
Was thinking to myself it would be nice to see Ranger X in a list like this, Awesome video!!!
Thanks for making yet another great video! Keep on doing Genesis/MD Hidden Gems guys :D
you're awesome
I'm so glad The Ooze finally made it into one of these videos. That's probably my favorite Genesis hidden gem!
Metaljesusrocks rocks. Everytime I watch one of his uploads it reminds me of the saying 'there are no strangers only friends we haven't met yet'. One love, Jah bless and keep on keeping on!
So glad Crack Down made the list, I loved that game as a kid and no one I mention it to has ever heard of it!
Ranger X is definitely one of my favorite Genesis games. Glad you guys mentioned it.
check out Herzog Zwei. It's the best RTS game of the 16-bit era
Poverty Gamer , I'll go as far and say the best RTS of all time. Every rts since then has borrowed shamelessly from it. Sure, Blizzard has great rts computer titles. But Herzog Zwei rules over all, even today.
It was remade for modern consoles under the name airmech arena . Herzog is one of my all time faves.
I absolutely LOVED Ranger X when I was kid. I was so excited when it popped up on your show.
Star Control and Herzog Zwei are two overlooked greats!
emmapeel38 I kept my Sega CD all because of 2P Star Control. :)
thank you metal jesus! watching your videos keep me going in bad days!
im not a big time game nerd or anything and i really enjoy your videos, man. love the hidden gem videos especially keep up the good work.
Great lists, thanks to both MJR and the Immortal JH! Loading up my Mega Everdrive now that the Analogue Mega Sg is here. Genesis gaming renaissance!! :D Great to discover some of these games I never thought much about back in the 90's!
Thank you John Hancock and Metal Jesus, for the longest time i could not remember the name of the game Target Earth, that was such a great game and a hidden gem of Sega.
Another awesome video! Thanks! I'm in Tacoma and I'll see you guys at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo this year
It's good to FINALLY hear someone bring up Ranger X.
Gotta say Greendog, it’s never mentioned on any hidden gem videos and it’s a cool game. Cool beach music for its sound track, a frisbee as your weapon and decent graphics.
Just bought Gargoyles. Thanks for the suggestions Metal Jesus and Mr. John Hancock!
Thanks, General chaos! I've been trying to remember that game for days.
I get a serious John C Riley vibe from John Hancock, and it makes me happy.
I love these videos, gives me ideas on what to add to my collection. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ghostbusters for the genesis. Easily one of the best Ghostbusters video games and very rare at that
Excellent video, MJR! I'm very pleasantly surprised you included Ranger X in this video. Awesome game and unfortunately too often overlooked. Some other hidden gems you might check out in the future:
- Beyond Oasis (arabian themed action/rpg)
- Crusader of Centy (action/rpg Zelda clone)
- Skeleton Crew (isometric run n' gun)
- Misadventures of Flink (platformer)
- Wings of Wor (ancient Greece themed side scrolling shmup)
- Phelios (Ancient Greece themed overhead shmup)
- Gaiares (side scrolling shmup)
- Hellfire (side scrolling shmup)
And here's a few (unfortunately expensive)Japanese exclusives:
- Alien Soldier (run n' gun/boss rush)
- Eliminate Down (side scrolling shmup)
- Gleylancer (side scrolling shmup)
- Panorama Cotton (3D shooter somewhere between Space Harrier & Star Fox)
Good video as usual!! Gain ground has been my bigger Genesis surprise. Give it a chance.
Metal Head, I love your videos and all the cameos! Please keep posting the 'gem' videos, they freaking rock!
When he was talking about crack down and the levels being timed it reminded me of Alien Breed and Eagles Nest. Two of my favourite old classics.
Ranger X finally made a list! Solid list John thanks!
Gargoyles looked super awesome! Thanks for the tip!
Tried Midnight Resistance last night and I gotta say, I absolutely loved it!
THE BEST of the BEST Sega Genesis title. A half dozen of us played this game back in 1993 and have never been so addicted to a space chess meets space war type game. To this day I've never played a game as much.
I first played The Ooze on the Sega Channel back around ‘94. It’s unique and fun.
John sure loves his shoot ‘em ups
So awesome target earth is on hidden gems. The game soundtrack is pretty epic!! Not really a hidden gym but i a huge fan of road rash which has awesome levels, great music and allows you to purchase new bikes as you progress through the game such a great racing game
I freakin' love General Chaos, and this is the first time I've seen it brought up on RUclips. So much awesome.
I remember EGM and some other mags back in the day making a BIIIIG DEAL about Star Control being the first 12-meg cartridge on Genesis.
really enjoy these videos
I was looking forward to this! :D
+MetalJesusRocks diggin the new font graphics.... way to keep things fresh MJ!!!
Great video as always guys!!! How about a sports title or 2 in the next video? I know not everyone is into sports games on any system, but the Genesis has some great ones. Super baseball 2020, mutant league hockey...
Target Earth. I love the music in that game, grew up playing this game, really good once you get in to it.
Some hidden gems which I love for Sega are Kid Chameleon and DeCap Attack. I'm not sure if they are popular, but if not they are for sure hidden gems in my opinion. Always love the videos Metal Jesus, and The Immortal John Hancock!!!
MetalJesus you really need to do more PC stuff, you have so much knowledge about it that would benefit the videos!
Man, when I saw the list in the description, I was looking for to see what Mr. Hancock would say about Ranger-X. That is a game that I discovered because of Classic Game Room and became one of my favorites for the Genesis. Very nice choice!
Edit: the entire list is great (I really love these Genesis episodes), I just have a soft spot for Ranger-X now.
Oh no, Metaljesus released a new hidden gems Video. Quick, we have like 10 minutes until the scalpers arrive to buy these games.
+Sheepy007 Patreon subscribers get these videos early if that's a concern for you
Sweet, with your advance advice it should work out well for me. Basically like insider trading.
Tom Wilson I'll be going to white-collar/people prison. I don't think there would be an issue with Mexican cartels... or scoring drugs inside the prison. Anyway, I'd rather somebody stayed on top of MetalJesus' video game stock tips, I'm going to need start up cash once I get out.
If you need two guys on youtube to tell you how to value Genesis games that have been out for almost thirty years, perhaps low-fee index funds are more to your investment speed than individual stock picks.....
If you don't already own these games...doesn't that make you a scalper like the rest of us?!? :-P
I've said it before but I have to mention it again! John Hancock is a very polite and truthful. I'm always smiling while watch him on this channel. I thumbed up the video before watching it because I know that it will be awesome. Not that others aren't good! They are all great but I think john is the best cohost on this channel. Metal Jesus is great as always.
Soldiers of Fortune. Originally known as The Chaos Engine in the UK and Europe, it was first published on the Amiga, before being ported to the Genesis, Super Nintendo, MS-DOS, Atari ST and Risc OS. Genesis version seems to be the closest to the Amiga in my view. And it's awesome. Two players, or single player and CPU assist. Steampunk shoot-em-up. What's not to love?
Awesome list. Man I really dont know the genesis library, only knew the ooze. Love all the couch co op games
Nice, tons of shooters. love them
Awesome video, MJR. I loved Master of Monsters back in the day. It's not really recognized as how great a game it was for its time. Also was a big fan of Star Control.
Caliber. 50 was a game I owned as a kid, and have never seen it since. Controls had a bit of a learning curve, but think back on it with a lot of nostalgia.
Jason you should do some beer recommendations in your game videos like Kelsey. Nothing can beat the games and beer combination, it's just awesome :)
Donald in Maui Mallard: Cold Shadow
More people have to know about this amazing platformer, almost like Earthworm Jim.
Target Earth is an excellent game and thoroughly enjoyed it and now I'm also enjoying Assault Suit Leynos on my PS4 which is from the HD remake.
i owned general chaos don't recall being overly excited by it. loved the gargoyles show as a kid might check out the game cause aladdin the game was good. ranger x is another i recall and is pretty cool.great list guys
Target Earth. Great, great game. Brings back good memories
love it, love bein' here
Oh man I remember having SO MUCH FUN with General Chaos
I grew up playing The Ooze as a kid. Game was such a strange concept but I loved it
Ooohhh General Chaos is so Rad!
More ps2 hidden gems please!!!! There's such a huge library of Games so there's got to be loads more games to show
Haunting starring poulterguy was one of my favorites as a kid. such a cool concept.
The ooze! I used to play that game all the time back in the day on my Sega Radica Plug N Play ;)
Oh wow, I loved Gargoyles when it was on.
Ranger X is incredible, had it back in the day. Up there with Subterrania as one of my favourite Megadrive games.
General Chaos was a really fun game. My brother and I used to play it quite frequently.
what happen with comix zone for me is a great game a little bit difficult but is a really true hidden gem, nice video and take care guys.
Ranger X is fantastic! I don't have much patience for complex games but I had Ranger X down fairly shortly, it's worth a little extra time.
Ranger x has really weird controls which may turn some people away, but once you get used to how it plays, it's easily one of the best games on the Genesis
All great games! I just wanna say that I’ve watched so many of these Sega favorites and hidden gems videos and I haven’t seen anyone mention Mutant League Football or Hockey. They are such great and funny games. I guess it’s just me haha
Master of monsters was one of my all time favorite Sega games that and warrior of Rome. . This is the first video to mention it. Cool.
Also I liked star control but my friend Andrew would always just kick my ass
Ranger X was and always will be one of my all time favorites.
keep up the great work everyone that work's hard on the videos, your work is very much appreciated ^_^
NBA Jam was one of favorite games as a kid.. and still is!
my brain totally deleted general chaos from my memory until i watched this video. that was one of my favorite games of all time to play with my brother.
Target Earth was one of my favorite games on the Genesis, And I loved the Star control games, but I played those on the PC.
Ranger X was my absolute favorite to play on sick days in elementary school.
I highly recommend a PAL only release called Cannon Fodder which supports the Mega Drive/Genesis mouse but controls well enough with the control pad. Its a real gem with very addicting game play.
Yeah! Ranger X!!! Loved that when i was a kid :D
"Sit down with a beer" Yeah, that beerbelly is undeniable.
Good video lads, the term to use is 'run and gun' for many of those games rather than the longer 'action, sidescolling shooting etc'
Good video guys! I played most of those games on an emulator.
one of my favorite games for the Genesis / PC
0:06 - I love the John Hancock "hand slap". I want to make a montage of all his hand slaps on Metal Jesus' channel.
EVERYTHING Electronic Arts touched in this era was gold -- NBA Live, Madden set the bar for sports games -- but the other stuff was mind-blowing. I wasted so much time on Buck Rogers, General Chaos, Road Rash III, and Haunting starring Polterguy-- so much glorious time!
There was also one game I had -- an EA Title -- it was a Sega CD game. A strategy title that played like Command and Conquer, but set in medieval times, IIRC. All I remember was that you had to keep killing sheep to feed your warriors, and the game was extremely prone to crashing. Even the crashing could not stop me from playing.
Besides the Electronic Arts titles, Cool Spot, Flashback and Caesar's Palace were three other games that repelled girls out of my dorm room back in the day.
But, yeah, EA ruled.
Star Control is one of the best Genesis games.
@MichelleObama isAman I'll take it over every Sonic ever.
great video!!! i have a pal copy of ranger x! its very expansive! i found it for 2€ and i am very proud! but no manual in it!!!
Target Earth was one of the early games I played on Sega Genesis. So much fun. I could never get passed the 2nd level lol
the snow Bros home ports were all awesome so it'd be nice to see one of them represented in one of the hidden gems lists.
Ranger X is one of my favorites! Some more hidden gems? High Seas Havok, Herzog Zwei, Atomic Robo Kid, and Decap Attack.
Pirates of the Dark Water is such an awesome hidden gem. It's very pricey nowadays however.
JH youve done it again!
Such good memories of general chaos
I had Ranger-X it was awesome!! :D
That Gargoyles Game looks badass. I want it
