@@diehlrThe N64's internal texture cache is twice the size of what the PlayStation had. The cache size wasn't the problem, it was simply starved by the use of cartridges which couldn't hold anything close to the amount of texture maps that a CD could.
As usual with your new Genesis & Mega Drive game videos, I've discovered a lot of games that I had no idea were being developed. Thanks for releasing these every year. Happy New Year, Pigsy. Have a great 2024.
Glad to hear it! I know everyone here is really interested in MD dev, so it can be hard to find stuff that they don't already know about. Happy 2024 to you too!
Sgdk is very special - even if you don't use all of it it's a fantastic base to start with. For our game Lufthoheiit we use sgdks - xgm sound driver, sgdk scolling/maps and general initialization. We use assembly language for the rest of the routines like sprite movement etc. Rescomp sgdks resource compiler would save any project a huge amount of time alone, hats off to the creator of sgdk Stephane.
Thanks for your continued support for other indie game developers, Pigsy! Personally, working on my game already drains all of my time and energy, but somehow you manage to work on your own game project(s), create tutorials, and also give visibility to other game projects. 👍

Really glad this is the first place we can see our new game in the cooking. Lufthoheit ! Shannon and Carsten are beast of work ! Working on the game and creating the soundtrack for this game is phenomenal. Thank you for the indie support !
As some ones who´s first console was a master system and then a mega drive I always seen my self as a sega connoisseur and it makes me happy to see the Mega drive keep getting loved even to this day. Seeing these games just warms my heart. But I will admit what I would love to see is some one getting like a licens to make a old school run and gun game set in Warhammer 40k would be epic to see 40k themed game on a master system.

I think an emulation console with a cartridge slot, cd slot and internet connection would be a good idea. They could then sell online and physical editions, not only of their console games, but of arcade games too! Even very cheap computers are capable of emulating up to Dreamcast/Model 3 now, so we should be getting close to the ideal $99 price point. Unlike the mini consoles, they could then continue to make money from game sales too!
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials Seeing that Atari entered the aftermarket with their 2600+, perhaps SEGA and M2 should jump on that bandwagon while they can. Maybe they could go above and beyond with new custom console shells (Green Hill checker pattern and Columns jewels), updated box/cart labels, manuals (Ex: Streets of Rage 2 or Phantasy Star 2 with the Japanese cover art and colored manuals) with an option for legacy versions ("American-ized" art with grayscale manuals), and the return of Mega Games multicarts.
I would buy a re-released Shinobi 1-3 special edition cartidge/box in a flash. I'm sure similar special editions (SoR, sonic etc) would sell too@@denraimei32

1:45 I think the one MAJOR factor that hold them back is indeed Cartridge Size. Many 3D effects could be "faked" using sprite animation among other tricks, one game that shows this off really nicely is Contra Hard Corps. Imagine the guys behind that title had 32MB to work with.
Thanks for mentioning my and @edmocaldas project Hayato's Journey (aka Kenseiden 2) Happy new year my friend and keep it up with your amazing Symphony of the Night adaptation!!!
Awesome job with the video, Pigsy! I made timestamps in another comment in case you wanted to integrate them so people can find a specific game easier. There's a lot of amazing games in the works right now! I'm personally most looking forward to Earthion, Lufthonheit, Daemon Claw, Heavy Recoil, Go! Go! PogoGirl, Kenseiden 2, BioEvil, Phantom Gear, and ZPF. So much impressive looking stuff! I'm hoping 2024 is the year where I actually start working on making prototypes of some of the ideas I've been kicking around since I first found your tutorials. All the best in 2024! 🍻
Just think small at first (try to put a single sprite on the screen, then 2, then the background etc). If you take things step by step then you'll get there eventually. Good luck!
It would seem nobody got what I meant. To me, the section with Starfox doesn't sound at all like what the Mega Drive hardware is possible of. Last I knew, the Mega Drive didn't use samples/soundfonts... something dubious is afoot.
Why shouldn't use them? MD/Genesis doesn't just have a chip for FM synthesis, it also has an old Texas Instruments SN for compatibility with Master System, through which it can produce digital samples very well with a old and well-known trick, plus it has its own processor for sound control, albeit only a Z80.
Time and technology are really unlocking these retro systems to their full potential!! Amazing to see these new games running on classic game machines!! Can you imagine when we get fully optimized development kits on all the retro systems? Think of the amazing games that could be made even on the most obscure game system! Great video!!
You really have to admire the outstanding accomplishments that are these projects. Demakes and impressive original games wouldn't be possible without bold and skilled developers who sometimes manage to push a retro system further than the best looking official game did. And the people who tinker with the console and create the tools that make homebrewing possible, they are often unsung heroes. I've always said mod and fan game creators are one of the best things about gaming. I've been keeping an eye at the evolving Sega Saturn scene. Once again developers are showing how amazing fandoms can be by actually working on that system too, they've tried to make the Saturn Sonic game Sega itself couldn't. Sadly most of attempts don't get off the ground, as to be expected. If anyone manages to create a good 3D Sonic it will be among the most impressive Sonic related homebrew projects. I'd like to know if it would be possible to demake Sonic Adventure on the Saturn.

Small correction: Insane Pain was not made by Davilia Games, but by Blast Process Games. I wouldn't expect any more games from them though. Cool video and great to have such an overview. I hope most of these projects make it to the finish line!
To think I’d live to see my old gaming rig port StarFox almost perfectly is something I’d never think of in a million years. Mind Melting. Also, your SOTN is coming along incredibly well, and I might just purchase an old MD just to play it. And BioEvil looks incredibly fun. The fact that games are still being made for this system is incredible.
I'm not a developer, but I wonder if there's a reason specifically why the post market releases became commonplace for the Mega Drive, is it its hardware design, video resolution, CPU and overall specs more appealing to development somehow, or is is just the most beloved classic console of the bunch?
Yea it’s the way the snes operates with external chips and weird coding I love the snes such I guess it’s just more attainable on megadrive to get the desired idea results
But really Xeno Crisis. A game made by (previously) retired professionals. It made money. Bitmap Bureau made it look easy. But they used to make SMD games.
The 68k processor helps in that matter. A lot of systems used it back in the day, so it's been studied/programmed for by many people over the years, and for all I know it's also friendly for C programming. That leads to the SGDK development kit that most devs are using nowadays. Having a modern, dedicated devkit is HUGE. And people aren't wrong when they say the MD was the superior machine compared to its peers (NeoGeo notwithstanding, as it was essentially an arcade board turned console) in what it could do by itself. The PC Engine was roughly an 8-bit system with 16-bit graphics, and the SNES' architecture was made to be reliant on external hardware (the many games with chips) after they had successfully applied that for the latter NES games. I believe we're finally starting to scratch the surface of the Mega Drive's true potential now, and I wonder what the console would be able to do had it not been "held back" by retrocompatibility with the SMS in its inception.
@deansatan9573this video has 5 SNES homebrews in it, 48 NES games (almost all Mega Man clones), 21 Genesis games, 51 Game Boy and GBC games. So NES and GB games dominate the video which use the 6502 system archetecture. It's the 6502 architecture, not the cpu clock speed is the bottleneck. I forgot specifically the issue with bottlenecks but it's actually related to how 6502 systems handle memory transfers (awkwardly). The NES dev scene seems quite strong despite this issue with 6502. But people have been homebrewing on 6502 machines for a long time, they are just more likely to be C64 and NES games. So if you are experienced with the 6502, you should be able to get good results. I feel the majority of NES games are hacks of Zelda and Super Mario Bros, so that's low hanging fruit and not really trying very hard at programming. I feel the Nintendo homebrew scene is more about adding levels and difficulty to already beloved franchises. ruclips.net/video/1AGMEZvU14g/видео.htmlsi=ehmRpjC8EuALXJOa
I'm a Megadrive child and love what you guys are doing. But I wish the SNES was able to be programmed for too. It would be amazing to see the old friendly rivalry like on Spurring the other team to do better.
The available tools are much better for the Genesis/MD from what I've seen, which is a major thing. There's no equivalent to SGDK or the music tools or anything else as far as I'm aware. Plenty of us out here know how to properly program the 65816 to go fast, but we're sticking with the Apple IIgs and Foenix F256/F256 Jr for now.
@deansatan9573 Yeah, it does seem the SNES doesn't get much love compared to the Amiga, Mega Drive and C64. The problem for the SNES is its architecture, which isn't the easiest to program for, whereas the Amiga and Mega Drive share many similarities that can make many cross-platform tools work well for the two and also why many games are being ported to the two machines. As for the C64, it's an 8-biy platform so the amount of work needed is much smaller and games tend to be smaller in scope for that and probably why we don't see that many for 32-bit platforms, the workload would go up a lot unless it's a simply game.
How do people continue to unlock power from this console?? It's the shonen protagonist of the video game world lol, at this rate I expect the people tinkering with it to say "this isn't even its final form" and turn it into a Saturn lol.
Right!? Well when you consider the attachments, like Pier Solar utilized Sega CD audio, you could make a real banger, given a dedicated enthusiast or team could produce.
@ When it comes to console capabilities, I look at add ons or mid gen upgrades in isolation. It's much more compelling to see a specific setup, like the base console, taken to new heights. Fans have studied the hardware endlessly, made tools that put the original SDKs to shame, practiced their butts off and worked much longer on their games to achieve what is being shown here. Developers in the 90s would’ve likely used a co processor or the 32X as a shortcut to achieve what talented and passionate fans are squeezing out of the base console. I wish people would make videos explaining (in a way a layperson could understand) and chronicling breakthroughs in game development for old hardware. Show the best looking official game compared to the best looking unofficial game, and explain the years long journey to reach the top of the graphical ceiling. Then show how fans decided that wasn’t good enough, achieved the impossible and shattered the old benchmark. Could be a fun documentary. Not everyone is technically oriented nor is it widely known that fans are outdoing the pros.
i wonder if the man working on an adaptation for ghouls n ghost that was close to be arcade perfect is still working on ths hack, I think I saw this project through your videos. Even with unfinished project, it is great to see people doing even 1 or 2 level of a modded game or their own game, seeing everyone's passion is heartwarming thanks
Weird how everyone knows of Yuzo Koshiro but his sister Ayano who was a graphics designer on Streets of Rage 2 and a bunch of other well known games is almost unknown in the west.
"The MegaGen is dead! Long live the MegaGen!" Thank you for putting together this video in addition to the work you are doing on SotN. While I enjoy seeing fan translations of games from other systems, Its even more exciting (for me) to see more and more new IPs developed that will be released as a FULL PHYSICAL game or at least have the potential to be. While 2024 is shaping up to be a great year for the MegaGen, it makes me wonder what kind of amazing things could be done if the MDdev community had understanding and fluency with the 32x.
Man watching this video at 12:20 AM on new year's made me so happy. I only like a handful of games on the Genesis like Comix Zone, Contra Hard Crop, Streets of Rage 1 & 2 and TMNT. Felt that it doesn't really have a good catalogue but then that's almost every retro console except the Play Station(s). Glad to see there are more games being made.
Very good video and outstanding work on SOTN. Too many games on the MD for 2024 this legendary console just refuses to get dusty. Also thank you for mentioning Super Power Kick.
I love the space hunter music (that would be the zillion theme! No wonder this comes from Brazil, where history books say zillion toys sold better than in japan.
Hey there, just wanted to say that your videos actually were a huge help for me developing and releasing my first Sega Genesis game. I never actually thought I'd be doing that honestly, and before a month ago I actually had never worked with C programming before. What a roller-coaster it was, but it was well worth it! I'm still very much an amateur, LOL. But it was still very gratifying to be able to make a game for my favorite 16-bit console.
Sure is! Lufthoheiit is using sprite multiplexing to show far greater than the normal system limit of sprites onscreen at once. This was a very rarely used technique so it's great to show what can be done in our game.
Earthion tiene una excelente música y sonidos de efecto los gráficos son de lo mejor Increíble lo poderosa que es la Sega Genesis siendo una consola de1988.
With the cost of memory today, they can make some really good looking games that can rival neo-geo in graphics... Yes the color will not be as good, but effects and sprites can be much better with more memory. Things that used hardware to do graphical tricks can now be done and saved in memory and streamed to the screen, so a hardware trick can be nothing but a preprocessed sprite.
Kenseiden is the most underrated Master System game of all time. I loved that game and its ( at the time ) unique game mechanics of learning new moves as you progress. A Genesis/MD sequel would be absolutely awesome!
All of these games look amazing, but I'm very interested in Earthion, Daemon Claw, Chords, Sacred Line II, Super Power Kick, Phantom Gear, and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. If the last one is even 95% accurate to the Neo-Geo version by the time it's finished it will show that a lot of the ports of the past were limited by time, budget, tooling, and knowledge. Even the PSX port had missing animations and stuff like that so if the Genesis version is more accurate that would be awesome.
Nintendo and Sega, should never stopping producing new games for Mega Drive and SNES with new technologies ,as these consoles were sold milhoes around the world, and many millions are still being used,
Thanks a lot for all the work you've done this year ! 2024 is going to be the a new Genesis era ! Lufthonheit is clearly the most technically impressive game of the list (considering Starfox will not go much further probably). I'm very happy to see CITY CONNECTION coming to the MD, one of my fav arcade games :)
luftonheit is awesome but I'm not sure a sprite multiplexer and some scaling is necessarily more impressive than an optimized 3d engine. a lot needs to go into those since the genesis is a tilemap system with a slow cpu and limited dma bandwidth. manifold supports sprite scaling as well as texture transparency and variable height sectors making it more like doom than wolfenstein. and star fox is completely nuts. gasega's been working on that on and off for probably close to 10 years.
That being said luftonheit is not only about multiplexing. The big technical challenge i see there is how to handle the collisions of so many sprites, even by using

A lot of 'em. Others i'm looking forward to are Castlevania: SoTN, Daemon Claw, , Planet B and BioEvil. Then there's Chords, which seems like a Snatcher kinda game for cartridge and could be interesting. Kai Magazine seems to be coming up strong with Life on Earth and The Secret of the Four Winds. Then there's ColocoDX, which reminds me of an old Mega Drive home brew demo called ResQ and was a fun little demo. Real Bout Fatal Fury Special would be very nice, but it does sound rough around the edges. Manifold looks impressive, even windowed like that, but some of the color choices are a bit weird in some places. All the others could become interesting as well. Overall, the new year could be one of the best for MD home brews yet! Oh and, what happened to the Crypt of Dracula game that was in development some years ago? Have a great new year Pigsy!
Would love to have a complete StarFox MegaDrive version, but I guess its not going to happen. Also, a Doom game using Erick's manifold engine would be awesome!
Been a Genesis fan since the early 90's. It blows my mind that there is still games coming out for the system. Every year we get more replayability with a system most of us bought 30-35 years ago.
It's not just the Mega Drive/Genesis scene, but really all of them. It's awesome if you're into such things. For example, my team is making a new Neo-Geo game. And there are at least three other Neo-Geo titles that are in the works that I am aware of coming out possibly this year. Considering there was almost nothing for many years and now all of a sudden we are amid a resurgence of new games for old consoles is an amazing time to be alive IMO.
While physical games for this generation of consoles are becoming a thing of the past NEW physical games on Sega’s Genesis/MegaDrive sure is refreshing and exciting
Speaking of sound drivers.. Mega Turrican, by dev. Factor 5, had the most amazing music/FX Ive ever heard on the Genesis. -Audios Wave Slave MD driver (by Chris Huelsbeck)
we are no longer limited by storage capacity as it was the case for cartridge based video consoles back in the 90s . we can now make video games on snes , sega genesis that require the use of a large amount of data and store them on sd card (there are adapters)
It's good to see people are still developing games for the older generation consoles. I wish someone would develop some new games for SNES. Thanks for the coverage and information.👍🤙🕹
There's "Affinity Sorrow" , a JRPG developed by Second Dimension. They're using their own custom development engine . It's not 100% certain, but there's the possibility it will be completed by the end of 2024

You realize SGDK is special when 90s legends are using it.

This still thriving scene makes me wish SEGA would greenlight a MD Mini Console full of nothing but indie games.
@@PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
Seeing that Atari entered the aftermarket with their 2600+, perhaps SEGA and M2 should jump on that bandwagon while they can.

Pigsy is a great narrator, developer and editor. What would the retro gaming community be without him, his presence?
1:45 I think the one MAJOR factor that hold them back is indeed Cartridge Size. Many 3D effects could be "faked" using sprite animation among other tricks, one game that shows this off really nicely is Contra Hard Corps. Imagine the guys behind that title had 32MB to work with.

Didn't think the Mega Drive could reproduce the Starfox soundtrack so accurately...
while i only listened through an SNES walkthrough, the MD version sounds so much better imo!!
It would seem nobody got what I meant.
To me, the section with Starfox doesn't sound at all like what the Mega Drive hardware is possible of. Last I knew, the Mega Drive didn't use samples/soundfonts... something dubious is afoot.
@@ryansteele2111possibly sample streaming & PCM software mixing?
Why shouldn't use them? MD/Genesis doesn't just have a chip for FM synthesis, it also has an old Texas Instruments SN for compatibility with Master System, through which it can produce digital samples very well with a old and well-known trick, plus it has its own processor for sound control, albeit only a Z80.
Many exciting and creative new games over the horizon for the Mega Drive.

SGDK
I think this shows how powerful the genesis was. Despite having a weak color palette it has much more raw power than the snes
I'm a Megadrive child and love what you guys are doing.
But I wish the SNES was able to be programmed for too.
It would be amazing to see the old friendly rivalry like on
Spurring the other team to do better.
Yeah, it would be great if there were lots of SNES games coming out too
The available tools are much better for the Genesis/MD from what I've seen, which is a major thing.
13:52 Coloco DX actually looks a lot like Sub-Terrania on Genesis.
It does a little!
It's actually very close to the unreleased game ResQ.
Kenseiden 2 looking like an official sequel.
I like it a lot!

Genesis/Mega Drive lives on!
4:00 that's on the genesis? that's crazy!!!

Lufthoheiit is using sprite multiplexing to show far greater than the normal system limit of sprites onscreen at once. This was a very rarely used technique so it's great to show what can be done in our game.
Earthion tiene una excelente música y sonidos de efecto los gráficos son de lo mejor
Increíble lo poderosa que es la Sega Genesis siendo una consola de1988.
Thank you for sharing these with us.
Great video! I'd be very interested in composing music for modern 16bit games!
I would also add Affinity Sorrow, The Cursed Legacy and maybe Golden Axe 32X Edition (which now runs on real hardware)
