- On the morning of April 30, 2020, Cleveland Fire Department's Engine 2 encountered severe standing water on the roadway while responding to a fire alarm activation. The truck hydroplaned and flipped onto its side. The injuries sustained by the crew were mostly minor, and this documentary sheds light on the lessons learned that day, in the hopes to help educate other departments on safety.

As a former volunteer firefighter here in the state of texas, I'm so glad to hear that the crew was not injured seriously, just mostly minor entries and I hope all have recovered and are now back on the job. GOD BLESS YOU GUYS, AND ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WHEN RESPONDING TO THE FIRES!!

Exactly. I am glad they walked away from the wreck. Seatbelts should be in every apparatus we use.
Train drivers to slow down in rain and watch for standing water. The water did not cause the wreck; The lack of attention to detail from the driver caused the wreck. This was no accident, for sure. This is a great training tool for better driving habits.
“I remember a pine tree coming toward us.” Those darn moving pine trees.
I've been in some close calls while driving emergency to calls, but keeping in mind the conditions- speed- reaction times- time of day are key to being safer so you arrive at the emergency. When driving correctly as possible your only challenge is anticipated issues with other drivers.
As Captain I you have to be aware of your drivers and their driving behaviors. The number 1 lesson is to correct your driver if they get tunnel vision on the way to a call and tell them to slow down if needed. Just because your friends doesn't stop you from being in command of the fire truck!

Overdramatized to the max! The driver obviously made a mistake in in-climate weather and caused the wreck; It’s not an accident, it’s a wreck. If they were all wearing seatbelts, how come only one of the four were hanging from his belt? Should’ve been two stuck in belts as the truck was on it’s side. Drama to the MAX! 😂

@@djp_712 It would be interesting to read the investigation report and how they justified not issuing a ticket to the driver for his role is crashing the truck. The public is lucky that it was a single vehicle crash, because that could have been deadly.

I was thinking the same thing, all that happened was your truck tipped over on its side at a slow speed!🤦 Honestly it wasn't worth making a documentary about it!! You guys coulda survived that without seatbelts for crying out loud, you guys make it seem like 3 of you lost your lives, or was seriously injured, you guys didn't even have a bruse or a scratch.

Thank you for sharing. Too often mishaps are swept under the proverbial carpet. Hard to imagine that monstrously heavy rig hydroplaning, but obviously it did. Glad all lived to tell their stories.
This is the ultimate sweeping under the rug. The first thing the driver said was it wasn't my fault.
I'm also glad nobody was hurt.
One of the roll overs we had was a result of over pressure on the tires. Yes, I know this video is wet street related, but ours was dry daytime paved street. We had received 8 new pumpers all of same design built by a major american mfg., but they were of primarily lightweight aluminum, not steel as had always been. Our standard air pressure was 120# front and rear duals so thats what was used, without subtracting the newer weight loss. First thing noticed was fish tailing on turns, then the accident where a car ran a red light requiring a sudden maneuver to avoid collision and the pumper began to rebound out of control from left curb to right curb of street until it rolled with much damage but minor injuries. All were removed from service while investigation was made, which found out instead of 120# we should be using 90#. By lowering pressure it put more tire rubber flat on the road. Expensive way to find this out.

Great job sharing this incident with everybody. One thing I always teach my guys is that the human brain is not capable of doing more than one thing at any given time. If you are already thinking about the scene you are responding to, you are not driving the truck safely. You must take the response one step at a time. I like how these guys shared to stop for a second and settle yourself and think about what you are doing before leaving the station. That is great advice.
Too bad the driver took his mind off the task of keeping his speed/braking/steering in check to prevent the hydroplane that happened.
So thankful no one was killed or Injured!!!
First thing he said was “chief we weren’t flying!” = Chief we were flying. Lol.
You have to get to the scene of the emergency. In this case, it sounds like they hit a washed out section of road. In the rain, standing water is deadly, it multiplies the danger of hydroplaning. In mere feet, you can go from safe to sliding. Honestly, it's no laughing matter.

Cleveland is just 3 hours away from Buffalo. The difference in accents is night and day. Back to the subject, I’m glad these boys walked away to live and serve another day!

once the water shifts in the tank of a pumper it's tough to overcome that momentum and recover control of the apparatus especially in inclement weather.
Firefighters are human.
Navy (20 years retired Submarine Qualifed). Safety Supervisor. Accidents happen can happen to anyone at anytime. We would investigate the acident. Gather all information to the cause of the incident Develop a after action report. Develop training to prevent the incident from happening again.
No matter the quality of the training...Humans be Human! This is not the first Engine Roll Over nor will it be the last!

Why do some people think that they know more about firefighters apparatus then they do.
Those that have never done the job always know how to do it better.
What’s to know? If you travel too fast for conditions or your tires are not properly maintained, you just might hydroplane and crash. That sounds like what happened here, of course I did not investigate this wreck, but from my past training and experience it sounds likely. Emergency vehicles are not immune to hydroplaning when improperly driven on wet roads.
Well, you must remember this is RUclips, hehe. I've driven my share of miles piloting fire apparatus. My experience is unique, I drove brush rigs (crew buses) in the dirt, in mud, in smoke, on roads no one would dare pass. Some have no idea.

This caught my attention bc I'm in the city of Cleveland, in, Ohio, and saw Cleveland on this video + realized this was some other city.(*They have a southern accent & knew it was a different city). I cannot imagine hydroplaning on water in a truck that size...these very brave 1st emergency responders were very lucky, and thank goodness they were secured by their seatbelts. The truck can be replaced- but the priceless trained workers have showed even after training- there are still many things to learn on the job.

I have hydro planed in my tractor trailer once before, I just barely kept my self on the road and it is most definitely terrifying to experience, I can't imagine how scary it was for these guys to realize they were not going to get control again
I hydroplaned on my motorcycle on the freeway once, but did not crash, luckily. I don’t blame the heavy rain. I was traveling uphill at the time and did not account for the possibility of enough water to cause the situation. Not very smart. 🏍🇺🇸🎒

How many of you know when hydroplaning can occur? I bet very few except Pilots!
The answer 9 times the square root of the tire pressure.
Stay below that speed and you will mitigate hydroplaning.

These fellas are just damn lucky that the fuel tank didn't breach and that diesel is pretty hard to have catch fire. The Mid Georgia Ambulance Service had a similar accident back in the 1980s with one of their gasoline powered ambulances, and the ambulance hydroplaned, skidded, hit a fireplug, flipped, and caught fire. A young African American power company man thankfully came along and freed them from the wreck before the ambulance was engulfed completely, and no patient was in back!

If you look at 6:43 when the apparatus is on it's side to me it looks like it was in need of a rear set of tires, but it is hard to tell

I did not know that you can control which braking system you wanted based on road conditions.
Truck engine compression or exhaust retarder brakes can be turned on and off if it is equipped

All I am reading is Firefighters and know it all civilians trashing the department. Firehouse Magazine's story states that NO charges were filed. That means there was no reckless driving by the engineer. The rear tires left the road cause of deep standing water. No matter what the engineer did there was no correcting and getting a grip of pavement. Maybe doing some research on the incident before you condemn the department and the engineer.
I am glad that they walked away from the crash, an engine can be replaced, lives can't.

Simple logic tells us he could have kept the truck from hydroplaning, especially since most vehicles on that road did not crash that day. Slow down in standing water on roadways, even when driving a fire truck. Simple as that!

Jesus... by watching just the first 5 minutes of this, you'd think they all died and took a group of kids crossing a crosswalk with them. A fire truck hydroplaned and everyone involved walked away without injuries. Why was this edited to make the viewer feel like they were watching a catastrophic reminder of a mass fatality incident?

I find it odd that they don't have dash cam videos on all fire trucks and Ambulance since they are always running red lights and going the opposite way of traffic flow. I guess they are still counting on "plausible deniability" to get out of at fault accidents.
The trucks in my department don't have Camaras. Why do you need them? If you can't see or hear and giant red truck that's on you.
@@deand8380 because most accidents involving a fire truck are 90% of the time the fire trucks fault. Most people don’t realize that when a fire truck runs a red light or goes in a opposite lane they are now the at fault party if there is an accident lights and sirens or not. Just like the accident in this video they were going to fast for conditions.

Wtf even is this? Next time show me a video of a Fire Engine drifting, getting squirrly and rolling over, instead of a Christopher Nolan flick where its a giant confusing build up to nothing.
Why would someone make a video like this. Would it make more sense to have the guys in one room and talk about the accident as a group. One here one there another one in the back field one in his office what the fk kind of video making is this.

Could you have made this video any more annoying to watch? The content is important and definitely needs to be shared but the constant switching between storytellers is totally distracting, unnecessary and annoying. Yet annother production that thinks it's music video instead of a documentary.
