- Join me on a behind the scenes tour of Fort Worth, Texas Fire Department with Public Information Officer Craig Trojacek. After completing a 24-hour shift with Station 2 Downtown, I visited the equipment shop where new and current apparatus are worked on, watched an emergency response at the Stockyards, got in-depth tour of GEAR 1, the Alarm Office, Texas Motor Speedway and finished off the long day with a working structure fire.

I'm a 35 yr retired FF from FWFD. There were Questions about why not clean Bunker gear in house or include an extractor at each station. Plus all the contamination that would happen and exposure and waste contaminated water. The state of TEXAS does an inspection of our gear throughout the year at each station plus the cost of an extractor at each station$$$$. Having a gear truck just makes most sense for availability at a fire. He stated small airports , Alliance Airport is a very large airport with UPS and FEDEX! Great JOB MR HURST!
I think that truck 14 that Eric is talking about the e1 with that 135ft aerial should be still good to use as reserve unit it looks to be in impeccable condition still but that's just my opinion I mean some fire departments are still using older ambulances and brush trucks and plus someone told me doesn't matter if the truck or ambulance is new or not as long you take care of the vehicle the vehicle will take care of you

Eric, i found your channel about a week ago and I’ve watched every video since. I’m a young guy in my early 20s looking for a career path and your videos have really got me hooked on the whole FD Scene and i thank you for that. Also being a native to Fort Worth born and raised, this video has been really cool to see some local stuff. Keep up the great work!
Check out South Metro Fire Rescue - Centinell Colorado
Eric is the PIO there, and it has a lot of similar videos
Dude do it.
Eric, as a retired Fire / EMS…..and police dispatcher (civilian), I am glad you are showing the dispatch side of the Fire departments. Although, I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT, it was not required for the job. It is interesting to see some of the dispatch centers. As a former dispatcher, I tried when I visited other cities, to visit their communications centers, and Fort Worth was one I got to see (many years ago). I heard the Captain in dispatch say that they can pull up the traffic cameras which I think can be a good thing. Hearing that, if you ever get the chance or the invite to visit Austin TX Fire department, try to see their communications center, as it houses Police, Fire, EMS, Sheriff and part of Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) all in one room. The reason I suggest this, is that TXDOT has a lot of their camera monitors on a large screen visible by the entire room. As I was mainly observing the fire guys, they said that sometimes if they happen to look up at one of the monitors, they have seen wrecks before the 9-1-1 calls ever start coming in and can already have calls entered for at least police units to start responding. They can also pull up any of the cameras on their screens directly, or request a specific camera be put on the large screen. Anyway……just a suggestion.
I grew up in a firehouse because of my dad. 21 years and I still learn something new!
One of my favorite videos yet! I'm just loving these videos in the North Texas area! Great work, and stay safe!
Loving this series
Me too. Eric is a great storyteller on behind the scenes.
the gear exchange is a wild concept, any other departments doing this on scene like this?
Yea seems like a huge hassle…I’d think it’s cheaper to buy two sets for each guy than stock and deal with this
I believe in Palm Beach county (Florida) they this type of unit but on theirs they actually have extractors to wash the turn out gear, stations to wash your gloves/boots/helmet, plus they have a decon station where you start your gross decon of your gear.
They do it a lot in Europe. They have several trucks that go to scene and EVERY part of the gear is taken bagged, and clean stuff issued. That way they have fresh gear.
Fuck that! Nobody’s gettin my gear, or cleaning it for me
So stupid
Another great one Eric! Thanks for sharing. That Gear truck was unique!
Thank you so very much Eric for everything you do on this channel. I also want to say thank all of the Firefighters for there service to our Country as well. May God always keep you all safe and healthy where ever you go
Gear 1 is a very cool idea. Another awesome video, Mr. Hurst!
I do rideshare in DFW and there was a large fire near Lake Worth once and that GEAR 1 passed me on 820. I am used to Dallas Fire-Rescue's red engines, so Fort Worth's white engines are neat.
Gonna miss old truck 14. She’s a beast
What happened to it
Progress
So cool, can't wait to work for Fort Worth FD some day
That was the second time that building caught on fire and had to be rebuilt. Glad you got to come visit but be sure to come back and spend some time!!
Eric, it would be awesome if you could do a ride along with DFW airport FD or some large airport FD. I always wonder how a large airport FD functions.
Great video I think that you would really geek out at how many fire apparatus & fire departments that are here in Clark County NV it'll blow your mind. You would probably need a week to check out every fire department
A station I recommend is a Virginia Beach Fire & EMS station! They have a super unique setup for their rescue squads, check it out!
Love that you are showing some of the behind the scenes information! So many including myself that don't know this side of things. As a medical personnel I find it very informative to see how all rescue departments function. Thank You!!
I appreciate the content you are creating! Well done brother!
Great videos. I remember when E-One first came out with the 135’. There are a lot of the high water vehicles like this in the SE Texas area.
My family and I were at the Stockyards when a medical emergency occurred right along the cattle drive. Saw FWFD respond. Crazy
I love those designs for the fire trucks they make in the USA 🙌
They do that gear exchange in Europe a lot. There is a Dutch channel I watch that I discovered that. It was interesting to see that they take everything so the crew has all fresh gear. They are not even issued masks, they use clean ones on the truck for every fire and are given new masks by the gear crew.
That must be Brandweer Lunteren. What they call GEAR 1, they call Occupational Hygiene.
great video and channel - enjoyed learning about GEAR 1. can you cover more about risk benefits of gear swap. which fire house started this kind of thing?
St. Louis City Fire Department use to do the total quint concept & all Engines were rescue engines with Hook & Ladder company also Quints but longer reach instead of 75' they were 100'+ then they still today run 2 rheavy escue squad companies Squid 1 out of Station 1 at Jefferson and pestalozie Squad 2 out of Station 29 at Forest Park Pkwy & Vandavener. Now they have only a hand full of Quinta & more traditional units.
They have some really cool trucks! love their color scheme.
In my area of NJ it's more common for police to have high water units then it is fire. Police departments are manned 24/7 but more FDs are partially or wholly volunteer run. The other difference is that with the prices of MRAPs and M114s the departments have the ability to have a dual purpose rescue rig - one that's fine for shooting scenes/barricaded suspects and is fine with high water rescue. The fire departments still handle swift water rescue though.
Really enjoyed this video. Shout out to friend from 44 that clued me in on your channel
Another awesome video, thanks Eric!
1. Eric, love your videos!!! 2. As a Texas native, I hope you actually took some time to take in the Stockyards while you were there. If you do, get some custom cowboy boots from ML Leddy’s (this is not an ad), as they started in my hometown and got a location in Fort Worth.
That's gotta be the coolest PIO ever!
And Truck 14 is now retired and is slated to go over training center.
Whats awesome to see is these apparatus heading to there forever homes leaving Wisconsin
Erick, Fort Worth is really spending the big bucks $, please memo their Chief that he is doing a superb job in getting his city council to INVEST in the safety of their city. This from an 80 year old firefighter 🚒 great video
Eric it would have been cool to see how they use the automated dispatch.
Haven’t watched the video yet but I know it will be great! Erik does amazing work and Ft. Worth FD I know is great!
Love the series you should come down south towards Corpus Christi
Another great video Eric!
Great stuff Eric
Always with crazy uploads! Hope all is well
I know the GEAR truck concept would never work in our Little County but hot dam that is an amazing set up. My one issue is the 3rd party company who washes the gear why not do that in house? may cut down on turn around times for the gear!
Great video, question do they swap gear every shift per group working? Seems there’s a lot of work come shift change to swap some gear out for the on duty working
Eric great video, why a truck with gear instead of a extractor at the fire house would be cheaper than the truck and his salary.
I am former Roanoke County Fire Department volunteer with defunct Clearbrook Rescue Squad
I was down in Dallas back in the 80's and applied to the DFW airport after talking to them about their unique way they do public safety. Sadly they told me for out of state people you get to come down there once for several day to take all your testing and interviews and get it all out of the way in one visit. When I got the letter about testing I called and they said they changed it all now and I would have to make separate trips for each thing. Was not going to be able to make that many trips to Texas so that was it for me. Might have been a great job
Great video!
Welded those beds for skeeter now firefighting, sweet company
Shared and liked your video 👍🏻🚒
Kind of weird that the race track has them for the fire protection. Most tracks have their own fire services. Surprised Texas allowed that since they are owned by SMI which owns 12 other tracks who do have their own fire protection/department.
This is just a guess, as I don’t know for sure, but I imagine all the fire coverage on the track is done by track safety personnel who are specifically trained for events on the track itself, such as wrecks and extrication if needed. Some of those guys may be from area Fire Departments who also work for TMS. I think FWFD probably handles a lot of fires on the entire grounds (parking, infield fan area, some medical), especially the days leading up to the event and following the event.
@@davidbehrend7054 know that. But what I’m saying is, the tracks have their own fire depts that cover everything on the property. From on- track to the parking and camping. It’s the tracks fire department, not an outside entity creating an additional command and station just for the track. I know I’m not making sense, it’s late and I’m tired.
Great Video.
My favourite fire dept would be the FDNY companies
You should go to station 43 in urbanbale
Awesome fire video ❤
U should come ride along with a Wisconsin department
im 15 yrs old born and raised here in fort worth tx, and i was wondering if you could do a video of station #29
Eric you should come to Seattle....We have TDA's...
Gear 1 truck is very cool
can you do Maple Shade fire department in New Jersey please they get calls mainly for fires and car accidents are rare in my town
Man I thought you and SMFR stopped uploading the schedule is so scarce. Do you still work for south metro? They seem to not prioritize community outreach videos of any kind keeping it so rare for an upload.
u gotta upload again
Any plans on coming to ride with Houston Fire Department?
Nice captured! Remembers me my ride alongs with FDNY units in the 1990's, videos right here on my channel. Eric, did you film with DJI Osmo Pocket 2 or 3 or with the action cam from DJI?
As im sure you know Im in the Hillsborough County Fire District and we use quints, and at the station I want to work at, it actually does have a quint! Station Number 42 by the way.
Have you gone to Minooka IL? I know a volunteer fire department chief there.
So is Fort Worth FD PIO also a active FF who has gear or just a pio
Waiting for the FDNY video!
FDNY has its own RUclips channel.
Any chance your coming to Austin?
Eric are you still with south metro PIO have not seen a video from you there in a long time
My grandpa worked for fwfd 25 years
Still cant believe there are career departments that allow shorts and t-shirts on the fire ground. Apparently OSHA doesn’t exist in Texas.
eric can you do FDNY?
shout out eric hurst and shout out all forth worth texas fire volunteer
Apparatus placement on that working fire 🤦🏻♂️ battalion chief might have well just pulled into the driveway
Thank you Eric for the awesome video I miss my south metro pio friends you kim Connor and Lauren your friend In Springfield Missouri kyle
Do Tulsa FD
Your cool
Please do a ride out with Station 8 San Antonio fire! Good department and a different culture
What’s the culture like?
Some lafd or lacounty would be awesome to watch
Would Love to see A Detriot Ride along
Maybe go to clovis NM next?
Or have a cleaning system in each battalion save a bunch of money and time
Meanwihle in Germany is the change of the gear normal. In our city, we can take a quick warm shower to clean the whole body also and than we get a complet new gear, include the underwear.
Hey dude. I know Arkansas is a smaller state but I recommend trying to go over to North Little Rock Fire Department. North Little Rock is different from Little Rock, but I love the firefighters at North Little Rock. I'm from there so it'd be cool to see you do some stuff out there.
Check out Saint Louis Fire Department
My fire department has some quints (Hillsborough county fire rescue fl)
you should do Pittsburgh fire
You go out Check out Boston Fire Department Do a and do a ride along there
What a bunch of show boats. They attend calls that they don’t even need to be at. They don’t tell people that only 3 to 5 % of their calls are even fires. Replacing trucks that are virtually brand new. The taxpayers are the ones they are truly hosing.
Seems like the GEAR 1 truck concept is a huge waste of time, money and effort. Just assigned each FF 2 sets of gear
Actually that`s not the case, in the Netherlands they call it Occupational Hygiene, and it prevents dirty gear to be worn inside the cabs, it significantly reduces work related cancer.
Jesus gear exchange after a fire absolutely ridiculous fort worth obviously has money to burn literally
Why is it ridiculous, what is ridiculous is the worker comp cost that a city pays out for cancer. This is much cheaper
Made me want to barf when I saw it was a gas truck
