Check this hack how you can use washer to copy uneven wall profile to your laminate plank and make seamless contact. If you need washer you can get it here amzn.to/3Xc8fd8
If only there were some type of board to install at the base of the wall that would cover the gap and still allow for the recommended 1/4” expansion gap between the laminent and the wall 🤔
The general idea of using this technique to scribe along an irregular edge is still fairly solid in my opinion. Not perfect, but decent enough...especially for those above who want a little space between the wall and the piece.
As others have commented, failing to leave the gaps at the edges of LVP will cause the flooring to buckle. I wondered how much vinyl really expands; some quick googling and calcs showed most rooms need at least the 1/4 inch space. If the floor might ever be outside the recommended range of 65 to 80F (like in a prolonged power outage) 1/4 inch would be inadequate for a large floor.
Let's say you had a crazy out of true wall that the baseboard couldn't cover the gap and you needed to do this. Besides leaving the gap, wait until you have a few rows of flooring down. If you're off even a little bit in having the first row square to the room, you could have a gap too big for the baseboards to cover.
The amount of people that don't understand that this video is *not* about how close to the wall you should install the flooring is staggering 🤯 This is the proper technique to avoid having to put in really thick baseboards to cover wide gaps. You want the same size gap along the whole wall. Never thought about using a washer though! I'll try to remember that for next time. Which is really soon 😀 And for those that don't understand how to get baseboards to follow along that wall. Pro tip: most baseboards are flexible 😉 Just push them against the wall and fasten them with nails or screws. You might need more than usual, but it'll do the trick.
I can tell this is your first time cos that cut is all over the place. Dont push the jigsaw. You guide it. Can address the lack of expansion gap and other issues when you can at least cut a straight line
How …. You’re suppose to make the cut install the floor and THEN add spacers …did you think he nailed it down? Lmao you’re suppose to leave room for expansion but the wall CLEARLY is completely out of line . You don’t do floors and if you do then you’re horrible at it
The begining sides is what needs the gap the ending could be flushed against the wall the floor with have all the other quarter inch space around the room to expand
I think it's a great idea but after you cut it you put spacers and that way when you start putting your other tiles it'd be easier and they don't separate
I think some people are losing the plot here. Yes, you need to leave a quarter inch gap. Hopefully, what he was trying to show is how good the fit is. With a fit like that, when you leave your gap, you do not need base and quarter round to cover your gaps at the wide spots.
@@missinglinq u can say it 25 times still doesn’t make it true. The manufacturer still calls for 1/8” and I’ve seen it expand and contract. They also want u to acclimate it inside your house for 48 hours prior to laying so it’s not too dimensionally sound is it. 😂
Perfect example of why you should be sure you’re giving good advice and the correcr advice before posting videos that tons of people who have no knowledge of flooring will see. a generation of shotty DIY RUclips university instructors. Not only will baseboard go down over that? but If I remember correctly, all instructions say to leave a gap when you purchase the most basic installation kits. Some even come with plastic spacers, they might be used for a reason. Otherwise I guess cool hack, using a washer to draw a wall line but irrelevant pretty much any application I’ve ever seen. If I didn’t know any better, though, I would’ve probably followed this based on the views, only to have a nightmare shortly after.
Honestly there are too many people on RUclips showing how to do a project that has no business doing so but it's their project or home. Doesn't affect me. So let them have at it. I know better. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I had laminate flooring installed directly on top of concrete and cannot walk on the floor because itr hurts my feet soo badly....can this be fixed or do I have to move out of my home 😢
Laminate needs an expansion gap and if I did something this stupid I would use my dividers, a tool designed for the purpose. But I guess if I was this stupid I might do the same stupid thing you did. 😆
The space is good. Either way the flooring has the other side of the wall to expand. Not to mention this room is probably no bigger than 50sqf so this floor will probably expand 1/8. My concern is not the gap but the room is actually squared out... cuts like that might throw your line off by a quarter to half an inch. That stuff is noticeable..
Yeah I wish the shawty contractor My wife hired to do our vinyl floor did this..... I just had to fix all his stupid mistakes The hardest part was he laid the vinyl flooring down on one side of the room and didn't check the angle so now I'm trying to fix the other side and the whole entire vinyl floor is about an inch cocked across the room.....
I hear the gap thing. I think it’s fine. Just move it away form wall to allow for the gap. Now the base board will cover the plank with out the gaps he would have had. Just slide the planks toward you
That’s what baseboards are for I understand what your trying to do it’s good craftsmanship but in that line of work the faster you are the more your gonna make you probably could’ve layed 5 rows in the time that took to do that

How not to install flooring.
Never never ever do this with a plank . Always leave some space , baseboards will cover
Why? That's not wood nor is it engineered. It's a a picture of wood laminated onto a piece of plastic that is dimensionally stable.
Baseboard wouldn’t cover the larger gap. Do this then put spacers behind, creating an even space that the baseboards will cover.

Incase you spent your last dime on laminate flooring, and a washer.

It was just an example.. clearly, someone can now add their spacers against the wall, and know that their baseboards will still cover the gap.

There should be 5/16” space between the wall and the flooring. That will buckle when it expands.
Good tio but it needs expansion gap anyways so in this application pointless
It needs space anyways it doesn’t have to be completely close. It needs air going in and out. Plus you can close it with the skirt boarding
Clever . You need expansion gap though.
