Some people have said there “Safely remove hardware,” icon has disappeared on their Windows 10 computer. Safely remove hardware allows you to remove your USB flash drive from a computer, if you have this setup for better performance it's advisable NOT to just pull out your USB flash drive, this can lead to lose of data on that drive.
In this video, I will show you a fix for Safely Remove Hardware Icon Missing and How to safely remove hardware or USB flash drive in Windows 10.

If your using windows 10 April 2018 (1803 version) the message to safely remove hardware is blocked if you have "Focus Assist" ON ( By picking any other option but "Off" ) If it's set to "Priority Only" then right click the usb icon and select Eject, the message won't appear, but the USB will disappear from This PC drives screen. (So it's safe to remove it) Set "Focus Assist" to "OFF" then put back in your usb. This time when you right-click the usb icon and select Eject, you will get the message that it is safe to remove.
I never got a message when I dismounted despite always having this option off. Had to turn Focus Assist to Priority and then back to Off to get this message back. Seemingly there is a 1803 update bug in this. Hooray.

Found your video and I tried your method.... It WORKED!!! Thank you so much for putting this up. I was worried that I'd have to always close my programs & files and turn off my computer each time I wanted to disconnect my external components. Thanks to you, I don't have to fiddle with any of that inconvenience. Thanks again!! (BTW...in your video, it sounds like you're saying, "Safety Remove..." instead of "Safely Remove...". Was confusing at first but, I eventually figured out what you meant.)
The safely remove hardware icon is sometimes missing in my Windows 7 computer. That depends on the type of storage device. For USB flash drives, the safely remove hardware icon is there, but for hard drives or optical DVD burners, the icon is missing. Is this a technical glitch?
In windows 10 it is.

the pc is reading it like an internal HDD .
i tied all of these and all those are on you showed and still i dont have the icon for remove usb drives

Recently encountered this issue. The solution of "rundll32 shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" doesn't work either. When I press "Stop" it will say that this device is not removable. This happens for external USB hard drives and for flash drives too! It was working before. These external hard drives and flash drives have the "Eject" options (as they should) when connected to a different windows 10 machine. I'm seriously considering reinstalling windows 10.

Why in your description do you say Icon Missing in Windows 10 / 8 / 7.Am i missing something ???I Never heard you mention Windows 8/7 once!Are we to guess which of the fixes work on these systems?
Because this fix works on windows 10 windows 8 Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.

Hi Brian, I've followed your instructions but still can't remove my hardrive. Not sure what else I can do?
This means some program is using your hard-drive and so it can't be removed as it is technically still in use. You need to use a program like Microsoft's Process Explorer to search for open files on your drive letter and then close that file.
I have my phone in my USB 3.0 port. When I run rundll32 shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll the window is empty...
No reference here to how to do this on Windows 7. All you use is Windows 10 as an example. How is this meant to be any kind of answer for Windows 7????

Recently experiencing after my PC has been running for a few hours if i click on an Icon it highlights, then if i click on a second icon it also highlights, can't unhighlight the icon and if I move an Icon it makes a duplicate of itself. If I restart computer it's ok for another few hours. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks...

Any freely available encryption program (try Crypt) will do that. Windows Ultimate or Window Pro version will allow you to do that too.
how do i changve my external hdd from non removable to removable?its pain in the ass to shut down my laptop everytime i want to eject it

Brian, thanks for the helpful video. Some of this worked. However, did you ever post the link Allyana requested? You show it very quickly; and this what I think you are pasting (%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll) but I don't see this path text officially listed anywhere in this video or within these user replies; please verify what this should be. When I type this, it does not have the same screen response as what you show in the video. It opens up a new browse window but it lists a ton of dll files, not all of which are icons. Appreciate you sharing this.

Great Video! thanks for your work out there! save hours of nightmare honestly.. for me was working the last fix on windows 8.1-> Component Services / Services(Local)/ Plug and Play. I stopped the service and start it again and this fixed the problem! Note: The rate for this video is 10 out of 10! The owner of the video did his best to gather all ways possible to fix this and explain. Please don't downrate it as it is not his fault your fix might not working! Downrate the f...... Microsoft engineers who for the sake of a new product they need to sort out for sale daily they convert for the market any last night dream idea they got not even thinking of the user friendly software (putting in a dense frog everybody to lose hours from their free time to solve a problem) but only valuating the company profit!!!

I do not understand.What is the benefit.
If you try to remove a USB device by just unplugging it manually it can easily get damaged. The icon allows you to tell the OS you want it to stop using it.
