To think, this was before the 6 hour Odyssey that was the Tokimeki Memorial review.
So Tim Rogers basically makes the equivalent research work of a scientific paper publication, but for video games and doesn't even talk about the game? I'm sold
I mean, he does. But he just takes a long, long, LONG time getting to talking about the game.
@@JoeCoolMaveric the intro for his tokimeki memorial video is like, an hour long, and somehow manages to be absolutely *riveting*
No, they undersell it. He goes on half hour long tangents, and just as long tangents of those tangents, that ALL is about the game in some way.
It's a Roman infrastructure of a review model!
“I’ve read every Halo book and now I’m the Master Chief of Loneliness”
So that’s why Adam Kovic rarely smiles
Also because he's got a plug up his butt.
you transform into the dr. manhattan of halo
Is that Tim Rogers or Brian David Gilbert?
Tim.

That face Woolie makes when Tim Rogers name is said. Dreamy
Woolie sending mad respect for people giving permanent chunks of their life bar to research a topic......as he does the same in the background to become a deep dive Lore God of Guilty Gear.
Was this foreshadowing
i guess Im pretty randomly asking but does anybody know a good place to watch newly released movies online?
@Ira Esteban Flixportal :)
@Lian Van Thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service =) I really appreciate it !!
@Ira Esteban No problem =)
Still deeply grateful to Tim for helping Moon RPG come out in the west. The good shit.
Saw his Tokimeki Memorial review the other day. I love this man for his admirably thorough review.
I also hate this man for making me really, really want to play a game I'm probably never going to be able to play.
It’s fan translated
I like that chat is asking if Tim is self aware, because it's impossible to describe Tim in a way that DOESNT male him seem like an incompetent dork. You need to experience Tim to understand Tim
Tim is Hyper-Aware. He is the most aware critic of them all. He just has a little thing called Style.
You may not like it but, Tim is what peak gamer performance looks like.
I am, straight-up, using Tim Rogers' material in my dissertation. For real.
Also, in case you see this, Woolie and Pat, thank you for being amazing. You make my heart warm and have helped me become a style toddler in DMC.
What is the dissertation about?
@@jcardenas_A Sorry it took me 3 years to respond; RUclips didn't tell me I had replies...
I'm looking at how the presentation of memory in a handful of games affects the experience of players. Specifically, with an eye for the rhetorical impacts (since that's what my degree is in). I'm looking at the Kingdom Hearts franchise, Final Fantasy 7 franchise, and a game called Code Vein. Thanks for asking!
@@SoloWingSheep Like I said, sorry it took me so long to respond. But thanks for the encouragement! Long, long term goal is obviously a book (like every academic wants) so maybe it'll exist in the world someday?
That period of time last year when Tim was putting out a kotaku video every few weeks (with topics ranging from "videogames that aim for your heart can't be reviewed" to "metacritic is better than yelp because not racist") was sublime.
DUDE. They couldn't even have known the Tokimeki Memorial: Forever with you video yet.
If you want to watch another Time Rogers video that is amazing, look up the 2017 Failure Workshop from GDC 2017. Tim Rogers was actually involved with the development of a game called Videoball which tanked miserably. As part of describing why it failed, Tim waxes poetic on Burberry scarves, the FGC making fun of him, visiting the dentist, a Jean Claude Van Damme statue in Belgium, and a tournament he hosted at his home themed around Little Caesars. It's good shit.
I've been a fan of Tim rogers since his 2010 article on how living in Japan was a surreal nightmare of people yelling about jeans and vegetarian ramen with beef broth in it. He OWNS
God sounds like I need to view his older stuff.
@@onimaxblade8988 HELL YEAH YOU DO
This is a good start for everyone looking to get into his older stuff

I was introduced to Tim Rogers via the Cyberpunk 2077 review. I remember seeing it and thinking "a little over an hour? must be pretty dense and talking about like pretty much everything"
Then I got about halfway through and he was talking about all the media he consumed to get prepared for the review and then I thought "huh.....s-so the actual review is coming, right?"
Then I make it to near the end and he reveals the true nature of the review and I was like "holy fuck this guy's a madman" and I haven't looked back since
In case anyone is wondering, I did 1 and 4 before doing 7
I feel like my grandpas are trying to explain to me why I should go to a 1950's Band reunion tour, very bizarre but I have to respect the sudden enthusiasm.
See, a clip like this might warrant putting some links in the description for all those things you told us to go look at

Here are some videos to get you started into the world of the glorious Tim Rogers.
Giving this thumbs up as I doubt Woolie will read very far down his comments section if at all
Literally just look up Tim Rogers doom and its right there
I came here from Tim Roger's review of Doom,
because someone down there commented they came from here.
but he's so comfy, tho
See, the important part is, Tim Rogers actually likes video games and plays them. He doesn't just pretend.
His Final Fantasy XIII review is the only review of that game that ever needed to be printed, and I'm not even certain that's hyberbole on my part.
I was introduced to Tim Rogers by his DMC5 video entitled "Devil May Cry 5 is the Holy Grail of Trash." It is one of my favorite videos of all time.
Sleeping on Jenny "watched every Land Before Time movie" Nicholson.
Jenny is a treasure. She's like some kind of magical whimsical media criticism fairy.
shes actually been getting worse but her videos are too strange and unique for anyone to point to another youtuber and say theyre doing it better
I can't get enough of "The Grim Dystopia of "A Christmas Prince""
Tim Rogers’ ramblings let him explain game design by explaining society and culture
I love the term "prestige tour."
Tim Rogers is one of my favourite writers and internet people. I hope to be half the man he is one day.
Tim Rogers sounds like a very talented guy but the “Start To Crate” system, as far as I’m aware, was the invention of Old Man Murray, a famous early game criticism site; it was specifically coined in one of their articles by future Portal/Psychonauts writer Erik Wolpaw:
www.oldmanmurray.com/features/39.html
Yeah, Old Man Murray was Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek, the writing team behind portal, and it is one of the funniest games review websites ever as a result. That article in particular was taking the piss out Paul Steed's complaints about poor reviews of Quake 3.
was looking for this comment. tbh i get the confusion as both old man murray and tim rogers are relics of the pre-social media internet, but someone had to set the record straight
His video on dragon quest XI when working for kotaku literally made me play XI VII and VIII and become a huge DQ fan (to the point where I’d say friendship ended with FF) man literally can make a 3 hour review entertaining and informative as fuck
"the Gran Turismo of walking simulators." made me not only buy Death Stranding- but made me love this man.
i started reading books after i finished his twelve thousand word ffXIII review (and every other thing i could find). i read god darn Moby Dick- and it OWNS.
That Doom review is fantastic I can’t believe how low the views are on his videos
It's pretty surprising actually usually super long video essays by people like Your movie sucks and Mauler usually get millions of views per vid
His own channel only has 3 videos so far and when you search the guy it takes you to Kotaku, which would have made me bail if it wasn't for these guys recommendation.
@@night1952 Here is a playlist of all of Tim Roger's videos he made or helped make for Kotaku, in case you don't want to interact with the rest of the channel. I highly recommend his series of videos comparing the original Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII with the PS1 English version.

Let's Mosey: A Slow Translation of Final Fantasy VII
I literally didn't know about his new channel before hearing about it here. Searching Tim Rogers ugly brings up his Kotaku vids
Because very few people can put with with rambling shit.
No link in the description but my boy Tim’s new channel is called Action Button. Literally the funniest (& most knowledgeable) man in gaming journalism IMO.
The Definitive Tim Rogers™ video is his Slow Translation of FFVII. However, it could be argued that every awesome video he makes is the Definitive Tim Rogers™. For instance, it only took one, 8 min or so video of his to convince me to look into Nioh.
Best/Most needed service announcement of all time. thank you for this.
I just found Tim too and i couldn’t agree more with what you said here
The Doom review is the best creative writing I’ve seen in video game journalism. It displays all the amazing quirks this dude excels at.
Tim Rogers Hideo Kojima's review of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is an amazing review.
Tim Rogers is a national treasure in the video game community. We must protect and support Tim Rogers.
Just watched almost all of the reviews on his action button channel because of pat. The way he describes him I always thought he was super unhinged and out-of-touch, so now after actually having watched him I'm coming back to this to listen to in context LOL.
I don't even give a fuck about the games in the reviews. I watch for the anecdotes. mark my words: Tokimeki memorial review will be studied in universities in the future
The once a month was sadly not possible but it’s so worth it seeing a new Tim Rogers video pop up after months to a year not getting a new Tim Rogers Action Button video, and each one being longer then the last of perfect because that’s more Tim Rogers talking about games on a higher level then any other reviewer on the internet and talking about his life that has a connection to the game.
I found out who Tim Rogers was when he made the FF7 review and then I went to watch every single video he's ever made.
If these guys love Tim Rogers, then I love these guys. Subscribed
Thanks guys for giving me the gift of lengthy videos to make my super long work week.
I've been a fan of Tim since before he quit Kotaku and he's really something special. His Death Stranding review is one of my favorite videos ever.
Now THIS is the acknowledgement I needed!
I watched the whole Doom review...such a fascinating and off the wall way to review games.
And to find out that he is doing these kind of reviews for 10+ years i really crazy to me.
I highly recommend his channel.
Tim Rogers’s reviews of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition captured me in a way I cannot yet finish comprehending. I’m currently 100+ hours playing the late game and have fully enjoyed every second of it thanks to Tim. Check out his 3hr review of Final Fantasy VII Remake, you will not be disapointed.
Tim Rogers makes kino
His DQ 11 videos are incredible. Same with all of his Action Button Reviews
Hello, and welcome to VIDEO GAMES!
I actually seen his Doom review, this man is one of a kind. Truly entertaining content on another level compared to the usual RUclips content. You have to find the time to watch those huge videos tough. Can't recommend it enough.
This is so crazy because I knew about Time to Crate and I know about Tim from his Dragon Quest reviews and just never put those two together. He looks so young so it just never crossed my mind.
thats because start to crate is from old man murray, not tim rogers
I'm so glad I found Tim. Dude is a crazy genius
BINGO!
(Doom shotgun)
(Mario oof)
HELLO
This is a comment in the style of Tim Rogers, Kotaku man and video game enthusiast, you're reading this in my voice...because I want you to.
So this madlad made a 6 HOUR video on Japan-exclusive game about dating girls....
I don't know how you can't respect this man.
So he promises that his reviews won’t be longer but they are? Sounds like Hbomberguy.
His most recent video, of Tokimeki Memorial, is nearly 6 hours long
@@NestorTheMindSculptor at least he gives you permission to skip two of the sections, essentially cutting the video in half (don't skip them)
Get Tim on the podcast!
I didn’t even know about the Kotaku stuff, I just loved his infomercials for indie games.
Love that boy, Tim Rogers could make a video on anything and I'll watch it.
Bro I thought Tim just stopped making videos (I don't follow Twitter). Thanks for bringing attention to his new stuff, I don't think I would've found out about myself
Love Tim!
Tim Rogers is our generation’s Hunter S. Thompson.
He just released a 6 hour review of a game that it's only in Japanese.
Tim rogers should be paid by the government to review games for the Smithsonian so that future generations actually know what the early years of man +video games was all about.
The Mark Twain of our time for what we refer to as video games.
Tokimeki Memorial's Review is one of the best Reviews out there .
I’m hooked on Tim Rogers
You told me 2 years ago, and I didn't listen, I didn't fuckin listen but I'm not sleeping on em now holy SHIT.
Tim Rogers is a modern day wonder of the world. I can listen to him not review a game all day.
So watching Mauler was just prep work for my discovery of Tim Rogers channel.
You watch Tim Roger videos for Tim Rogers , the games are just a bonus.
Holy shit I have to watch this now
I only recognize the name Tim Rogers from the Alien Resurrection shitstorm video where Pat tried to explain the 'start to crate' concept to Matt
I fucking love Tim Rogers
Thank you for reminding me about "Hmm. Suspicious."
Glad Tim Rogers is starting to get more attention
Did anyone write them an angry email saying that Time to Crate was coined by Erik Wolpaw on Old Man Murray?
It's super super fucking annoying when someone gets super hype about their supposidly favorite content creater but start giving them credit for things they never did. It makes taking their word that Tim Rogers is good hard to believe when they can't even cite his works accurately which just makes them seem not as big of a fan as they say they are. Which makes their Tim Rogers is a genius complements seem utterly vapid. Like this is my legitimate first time hearing about Tim but they can't get information on him correct then I can't take their word for it.
@@tylercafe1260 chill out dude.
I was expecting them to tell me this is the same guy from “Gaming in the Clinton Years”
This dude sounds like exactly the same guy.
Everyone should watch at least 1 review of Tim Rogers, even when he was in Kotaku, specially his Dragon Quest XI one, as for the Action Button YT channel, my favorites by a mile are Boku No Natsuyasumi and Tokimeki Memorial, both are huge, both are about japanese games that never left Japan, and both have 30-40 minutes of tangents that talk about the game, but in other ways that you don't usually see it.
Oh. And this is before the Tokimeki Memorial madness. Bless, indeed.
Tim Rogers might be the least healthy vampire.
Tim Roger's Death Stranding review(s) is the best review of anything I have ever witnessed ever. It wasn't even like I was watching a review, it was like individualizing its own hypertext narrative for itself interdependent of Death Stranding.
Ever see his 2 hour review of a controller?
Funny they didn't mention Joseph Anderson who only has 1+ hours reviews of games in painstakingly fine detail and is currently on the journey of reviewing everything witcher, which part 1 is 4 hours long.
Or "*blank*"(his youtube channel is literally a spacebar) who dissected the star wars universe down to it's essences (he himself said that for the video he had watched all of the main series at least 50 times)
10:56 *Shadowgate Hall of Mirrors theme begins to play*
i am now going go to find if Tim Rogers did a review on dmc.
Time to crate has nothing to do with Tim Rogers though?
Welcome back to video games
Ah the podcast in which we find out that Pat is *still* wrong about dogs being able to talk. Wonderful.
One of my favorite reviews ever is Tim's review of God Hand told entirely through metaphor. Its on RUclips. Check it out.
Tim's Death Stranding review perfectly surmised how I felt about the game.
Action Button made Videoball, right?
Yep
His red dead content was so good
so he's a gonzo games journalist? fucking amazing
Me and a couple of my friends are watching every single scooby doo movie right now, so I can kind of understand this pain. Just so you know there are over 40 films.
I thought there were like..6
(hearing Woolie and Pat describe these reviews)
Wait, isn't that Noah Gervais?
Yeah lmao I was also having a flash of other creators appear in my mind as they described him. Tim Rogers might be funny but he's certainly not the only one who does those kind of videos.
@@tylercafe1260 After watching one of the Tim Rogers videos now, I can say that Tim does in ways meander towards nonesense (his TLOU review, for example, describes every physical video game copy he has in full detail). But a lot of the stuff he steers towards is to get to some specific points about the game and I felt that was pretty on par with what Noah does. The bigger difference is that Noah explores narrative and game design in relation to culture and literature wheras Tim (seemingly) spends more time engrained in video game's industry and the greater context of these games in that industry.
Tim cares about presentation to a frightening degree, Noah does not seem to know what the meaning of editing is. Noah's content is interesting, but the video production is extremely amateur, to an obnoxious degree, imo.
Noah's tangents are pit stops on a road trip. Tim Rogers' tangents go over the mountain range and then come back to go over a different mountain range on the other side of the road.
This clip is good and important
The only time Tim has lead me wrong was DQ11, but other than that I love him
11:32 - 11:38 I am going to need a link to that, please. Thank you.
NitroRad and Thorhighheels are following suit of this psycho I have never heard of in my life. Imma watch that Doom review while fucking around in Warzone.
Is there a reason they didn't mention Videoball? Tim Rodgers made a game, a fun couch coop multiplayer title.
He's made other games too. Ziggurat, heck he designed the seduction minigame they used in Killer is Dead.
_sees Tim Rogers’ name_
YOOOOOOOO
I still rewatch his fake infomercials
Alright, gonna watch that Domm video
I bet they don't know about Videoball yet.
