i always love seeing meredith as megagirl tell her actual husband brian "you're nothing like my boyfriend"
Well they weren't married yet at that point but I still find it hilarious in retrospect lol
Darren was in the audience for the GLEE joke too lol, he’s who Joe winks at.
And he wrote the music lol
Hahaha brilliant!
kick it up a notch is one of my absolute favorite songs from starkid as a whole. the fact that dylan can sound THAT good while holding a puppet over his head for 10 minutes is hella impressive
Tootsie in his first scene: “A horse once ate my cousin!”
Tootsie later: “That stack of hay was my cousin!”
“Baby Joey!!!” I love how excited you were to see him
"I've heard of your dad!" "Yeah, I'm his son."
has the same energy as
"Did you grow up there?" "Yes, when I was a kid"
Or “he was born at a very young age”
"How did he go from Pincer to this?" He has the range, darling.
Facts
Kick It Up a Notch has gotta be one of their best songs ever
This was also the first time fans heard Dylan since he played Dumbledore. Not that he was a bad vocalist at that time of course, but when he opened his mouth at the beginning of Kick It Up a Notch, people were floored.
It was also the first show they were mic’d for. In so many ways Starship was a turning point.
This was the first show Denise did with Starkid. On homecoming she refers to it as a 3 hour long space opera with only 8 songs. She also talked about her mom said this is a show for dreamers and if people don’t like the show they’re not really dreamers. I’m so glad you saw Lauren as Taz. It’s so hard to say which character of Lauren’s is your favorite because they’re all so great in different ways.
Welcome to the Tootsie/Megagirl ship, it's one of the purest ships out there!
Btw the pink glasses are a Starkid in joke, kinda like Joey's blue headband xD
So we got that Tootsie Noodles once had a flirtatious relationship with a stack of hay, which was kind of weird because that stack of hay was his cousin.
A little earlier in the show, we learn that he and horses have a feud because a horse once ate his cousin.
Make of that what you wish.
my bisexual ass has never related more to anything than your reaction to Lauren as Taz
Saaaaaame
I relate to this comment
@VERONIKA ZIOUECHE what is polysexual??
Barbara: You promised me this was little mermaid!
People who’ve read the little mermaid: 😬
Also: "I still feel like the songs in this don't suit their voices well" oh don't worry, just wait for Kick it Up a Notch
Your scream when seeing Denise is such a mood, she is my favorite Starkid! Especially considering her type cast is the same as mine. February is my DREAM role
I love her so much
@@Barbara2.0 Your scream when you saw Denise gives me life!
"joey's skills are a combo of being a good actor and the hair style" -I cackled at that one. Never occurred to me, but that's funny! For the GLEE joke, the one loving it the most is Darren Criss. He actually wrote all of the songs while also being on Glee. Also the glasses are Darren's too. Or at least he wore them as Harry Potter.
Eventhough a lot of the Starkids' improved vocally since then, I think Starship has one of the best soundtracks. There's not a single song I don't care for. Every single one is great.
your reaction to seeing Lauren as Taz... i felt that in my soul
I felt that in my soul too if you know what I mean hahaha
God me too. Taz is my favorite
@Barbara 2.0
1. Starkid chose bugs as the main characters for this musical because the primary inspiration for the story was the sci-fi movie "Starship Troopers" and the aliens in that movie were bugs.
2. Brian Holden wore the shades at the end, not to look threatening, but because they belong to Darren Criss. It was a combination of homage to Darren because this entire musical was his idea and he couldn't participate because he was filming GLEE at the time and the in-joke that the shades belonged to Darren.
The bugs is one of the main point of reference to the movie - starship troopers. It's an old movie about interglacial war (starring Neil Patrick Harris) against a planet with giant bugs (from the pov of the troopers). The scene with the knife is a direct callback
Oh I didn't know that! Nice
Yeah i got starship troopers vipe and a bit of avatar
Yup! And Taz is a direct reference to Vasquez in Aliens, who is also a badass Hispanic lady played by a white woman.
@@wearethebomb42 in fairness, Lauren Lopez IS Latina!
"was that an armchair that just ate him??"
I CAN'T. I'M DONE. NOT EVEN TWO MINUTES IN AND I CAN'T BREATHE.
“this must be how joey and lauren fell in love” well the timing adds up..
This show is just the best thing every purely because of Dylan Saunders- speaking of Dylan if you want to hear more of him, there's a musical called Starry which was written by Matt Dahan (who's in the band for the hatchetfield shows) and has Mariah, Dylan, Jaime, Jeff, and some other Starkids in it. It's about Vincent and Theo Van Gogh (and Dylan plays Vincent)
Starry is great although so far it’s just a concept album it hasn’t been turned into a full fledged musical. They did do live performances at studio 54 before covid hit. Lauren performed in the show there.
Your reaction to taz is fueling my bisexuality because ✨same✨
Good, that was the intention hahaha
literally me too
I'd love to see you react to Holy Musical Batman, Joe Walker's Batman is fantastic and Brian Holden is hilarious as Superman. Also, Jeff Blim as Sweet Tooth is just amazing. (Lauren plays Commissioner Gordon if that helps)
It's on the list for this year! :)
Robin has to be my favorite Starkid character!!!
Can we just appreciate Dylan's dancing back and forth in anticipation when Mega Girl downloads "love"? Brilliant bit of physicality.
You bring up such a good point though; the green one WOULD make a fantastic table.
Hahahaha good to know I'm not alone xD
Pincer's tell me all about her pose is the best puppetry of all time change my mind.
I highkey relate to your reaction to Denise. Also your reaction to Lauren as Taz was such a mood! Same with Meredith as Mega-Girl.
Also I loved that Sci-fi DMA joke and immediate retraction upon seeing Up's personality.
"I always go from head empty to what is the meaning of life" may be the best description is Starkid lyrics I've ever heard I love it!
Also: I think Nick Lang made the 2D puppets. The 3D ones were done by Russ Walko, Artie Esposito, Carrie Kiker and Brett O'Quinn!
Wow is there anything Nick can't do?
@@Barbara2.0 this question has a definite answer of no, he is a brilliant writer, actor, artist, dancer, has great hair, and weirdly one of the things that impresses me most about him is his memory like he can recite entire movies and stuff
oh hi avalee
My fan theory: commander up is a descendant of general McNamara
20 WHOLE EPISODES?!? We've gotten so far on this journey
Tell me about it! :,) I'm so happy
at 29:27 Bugette is Eponine and I will never stop loving it.
Going from head-empty to "what is the meaning of life?" is the summary of my entire life hahaha
Oh you missed the pink glasses reference !!!! Bless your heart !!! I guess you'd have to be an early fan to get it. Darren used to rock those constantly for every occasion! They were his signature style. Hence the pock
Yeah I'm slowly getting the inside jokes hehe
LITERALLY DROPPED EVERYTHING TO SEE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not kidding. My hair dryer is on the floor, still going.
Oh my God girl, please don't burn anything hahaha But really appreciate the support, much love ❤
@@Barbara2.0 I turned it off after I finished fangirling, lol.
Hahahaha good good
Just realized this was up and STOPPED THE WORLD
I love that this is a Denise Donovan appreciation video
1000000000%
The inspiration for the bug aspect probably comes from Starship Troopers. In that novel, a group of human space mercenaries go out to fight off a colony of bugs, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by that. From what I heard, someone pitched this musical as The Little Mermaid meets Alien.
Since I watched these shows as they came out, I have the opposite reaction from you; where these guys are my OG, and I'm missing them when I watch the newer stuff.
The cameos in the beginning are the people from A Very Potter Musical and Sequel that couldn't be in this production. It's nice to see them again.
Man, as a fellow Lauren stan, I cannot wait for you to see her in A Very Potter Musical
Same, Ari, same 🤩
Let’s expose ourselves, what would your Farm Planet names be? xD I'll start: Content Movies
Sing Fanfiction seems about right, lol.
Writing fanfics starkid
Scrawl Drama, sounds about right
Sleepy Arts
I'm Writing Books, lol
This is probably my third time watching this reaction and hahaha 2:36 Joey and Lauren fell in love looking at each other's bugs hahaha
Your FACE when Taz first came on? Absolutely brilliant, my god.
If you want to listen to Get Back Up and Kick It Up A Notch after all the Starkids got more experienced with singing, I can wholeheartedly recommend the clips of the Apocalyptour floating around on youtube, they're a doozy!
I love the part Lauren says "dónde está la computa?" Bcus "computa" means computer but "puta" mean the b word lmao
Omg I love this show so much probably my favourite starkid production
Kick it Up a Notch is my all time favorite Starkid song and Starship is my second favorite out of all their shows (the first being TGWDLM), I'm so glad to see you enjoy them and spread the cult of Starkid.
The movie “Starship Troopers” is a a big thing the show gets inspiration from
"Thats like my science projects in school, pretty but useless" (officer February comes on screen)
The "not Taz, CABRÓN!" is delightful.
Also I highly reccomend you listening to Status Quo (the song joey sings in this) .... from Starkid Homecoming.. female harmonies! But also the 4 guys did it on tour and THEIR HARMONIES! Uhg melt.
Tte spaceship tour! If you google status quo starkid you'll see the album picture (that's the best quality as the tour videos have too much crowd noise)
The Way I Do is my favorite Starkid love song! It's so good! This show doesnt get enough respect. It was their first one outside of school where they were in charge of everything and a critic shat on this show! I like a lot of the songs! I dont get the hate!
Aw this made me really happy I'm so glad you appreciated taz, and tootsie and megagirl! Also if you haven't been told yet look up Starship: Requiem, it's an audio reading of a sequel focusing on tootsie and megagirl where they go meet megagirl's robot family
Oh yeah, I've heard about that. I'll definitely check it out
OMG I'm sooooo excited. Also. WOW. You made a video of 34min out of a musical that's 3h long. You are crazy hahahahahah.
It was SO much work. But my equipment just won't take longer videos #struggles
Loved your reaction! By the way, a lot of the stuff you were wondering about in the show came from the movie _Aliens_ , which I think was a bigger influence on it than _Mermaid_ . Brian Holden described Starship as " _The Little Mermaid_ meets _Aliens_ ". If you haven't seen it, _Aliens_ was a scary 1986 horror/scifi film about a spaceship crew stranded on a remote planet infested with giant alien insects, which were trying to implant their eggs in the humans. When the eggs hatch the larva burst out of the person's chest, killing him. It was a good movie but nasty and xenophobic, and I just LOVE how the Langs gave it the _Wicked_ treatment, writing the story from the bugs' perspective, with the moral that all life is beautiful. Lauren as Taz was doing a wonderful takeoff on Vasquez, the tough, Latina trooper in the movie. Holden as Junior played a spot-on version of the evil company weasel Burke (Paul Reiser). Megagirl was taken from the evil robot from the first movie _Alien_ .
Wow Sean, that's such great info. Definitely with you on the "Wicked treatment" bit, that's beautiful writing
This is personally my favourite out of all the shows and maybe one of my favourite shows of all time strictly for the music, status quo, kick it up a notch and the way I do are some of my favourite Starkid songs of all time
So fun to see this. Thanks! A few random comments.
"Have I finally opened the box that was keeping my sh*t together?" = genuine literal LOL moment for me. So funny. Second only to your "you do you, mate - oh! heard it as soon as I said it" comment from TGWDLM video.
"Why bugs?" I'm not sure, but I get strong "Starship Troopers" vibes, from the propaganda clips at the beginning, and that movie used the term "bugs" for the aliens and there are a lot of parallels with the bug society in both, so I'm betting that was an influence. Obviously Alien/s was a big influence too. Starship Rangers are like both the Starship Troopers and the Colonial Marines from Aliens (Taz is an even more over-the-top version of Vasquez).
I liked how you paused the video for your longer reactions in a lot of places. Relieves the tension from both wanting to listen to what your saying but also listening to the video.
There's a short "sequel" script that was released I think last year as a perk for something that follows Toosie and Megagirl as they visit Megagirl's family!
I've heard! Need to check that out
Taz is my favourite of Lauren's characters. I can't wait to watch you reaction when she comes on. Her opening monologue about Up is FABULOUS!
I just binged all of your Starkid videos, and it was glorious! I loved your reactions, they are so genuine and fun. But i absolutely love your end reflections, they're always extremely intelligent and introspective.
I wait eagerly wait to watch the rest of your reactions!
That is so freaking sweet! Welcome to the channel ❤ I really appreciate your kind words, so happy to have you here and to know you're enjoying the content 😊
Don't mind me I'm just back for the third time in two hours. I love that your Lauren trajectory has gone from less to more spectacular- can't wait for you too experience Draco Malfoy
I take it you like the video then? Hihi I can't wait for Draco either 😍
@@Barbara2.0 perfect storm of this being one of my favorite starkid shows, being in the car when I got the notification, and a Great reaction vid. My hats are off to you! I continue to feel like I'm in a giant slumber party on this channel and I Love it.
Oh my God, the slumber party bit is just pure facts! I always have the best time on these comment sections 🤩
this was denise's first starkid show.
Oh nice! Didn't know that
one time in highschoool I was Taz for halloween. I carried my calculus book with me.
Truly one of my favorite shows just because of how nostalgic it feels even though I didn't watch it that long ago. It just makes me happy and like you said, all the characters dynamics are wonderful.
Your reactions and commentary are everything I want and need from my friends when I try to show them StarKid! Love it! I kinda wanna watch this and Starship Troopers back to back!
There were jokes in the Apocalyptour that this show is basically The Little Mermaid in Space. But it definitely smashes that up with Alien.
I had a lot of trouble getting into this one, but I eventually got it going and had a blast by the end.
They are bugs because it is partially based on the setting of Starship Troopers (a movie series).
And my farm planet name would be Snacky VideoGames
Oh yeah time to kick it up a notch
Just came across your page. This is my favorite Lauren Lopez role. She’s great as Draco but Taz is just unhinged. 😂
This was truly entertaining!
You should react to 36 questions
Everything made sense when I saw which musical it was 😅😅❤️
Kick it Up a Notch is a Disney villain song and no one can tell me otherwise.
Tag urself I’m tOoTsiE NoOdLes
Im not sure if this was their intention for the story or not, but this is what im seeing.
Setting: Starwars *being in outer space*
Main plotline: The Little Mermaid *protagonist wanting to be someone different, and getting magical help from the main villain in order to lie about who he is so he can fit in. Also, Bug's friend, Roach, kinda reminds me of Flounder*
Characters: A Bug's Life *do I really need to say?*
This was my first Starkid musical, and I had pretty much the same reaction to Lauren as Taz.
I love this series! You should do “The Mad Ones” next!! It needs to get way more love. It’ll break your heart btw.
agreed!
Always down for heart breaking ones hahahaha
"my brain is telling me to look at the bug, but my heart is a bitch" can I steal that please? also, just an FYI, this is my favourite musical ever. not just starkid, my favourite musical OF. ALL. TIME. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
For another Starkid musical, I think you'll really enjoy is Holy Musical Batman
But besides it - I'd love to see you react to Something Rotten, I think you'll have a blast!
I'll do both :D
The bugs are because it's a spoof of the movie starship troopers, which is about people crashing on a big planet and such
I would love to see you react to Starkid's Holy Musical B@man. The music is awesome (in my opinion), the story is super sweet and I can confirm you can enjoy it even if you're not a comic book fan.
I will! And I'm a comic book reader who loves Batman, so this should be fun
@@Barbara2.0 I'll be looking forward to it :) it's one of my favorite shows.
First time watching this for ages... Man Dylan really showed everyone else up in the singing department didn't hey!!!
Ikr
Yknow if u liked the hatchetfield musicals (the guy who didn't like musicals and black friday) I reccomend checking out nightmare time. It's a series of short stories in hatchetfield and expands the lore, explores old characters, adds new characters, plus there's 11 new songs, so I highly recommend u check it out, the first season (3 episodes) r on RUclips rn.
I will, thank you!
So I'm pretty sure the inspiration for this was the movie Starship Troopers. Just, look it up I can't do it justice, lol. It's a B sci-fi movie and it's just *chef's kiss*
Ok 1. I love this series and it's great seeing you discover every starkid musical
Oh I didn't know that. They seem to be sick a lot during filming days
I think you would honestly like holy musical batman solely for the music and the Joe love, because he is amazing in it.
It's coming soon ;)
Honestly your analysis at the end there was so on point 💯💯💯
the reason for the bugs is because of a movie called starship troopers where there was an alien planet full of bugs. The difference is, the movie was about the humans, and the bugs were the 'bad guys' so this is like a backwards parody of it
Oh nice info! Thanks for that, Casey :)
Me, before I've seen the entire musical: hmm, doesn't really sound like my cup of tea
Me, after seeing this reaction, watching the musical and listening to "Kick it up a notch" on a loop for a while: they all have five communal braincells and toss those around like hot potatos; i like them so much
Hahahahaha ❤
Thank you for unintentionally posting this on my birthday
Happy birthday!
[serotonin levels increase]
Ok u joke, but the first time I saw kick it up a notch, my only thought was "my god this mans voice is butter" and i realized I too would do anything he says. I have a problem.
I was joking but not really hahaha
I remember suggesting this show to you! I told you it was the little mermaid in space!
I love this show, though it's a little too long to watch regularly. It's so strange seeing everyone so young (since I started with Firebringer). If you don't mind I'd like to recommend a show. I think you'll like We Are The Tigers. It's a high school murder mystery with some absolutely amazing harmonies
Lots of people suggested that show, I'll definitely check it out. Cheers!
@@Barbara2.0 omg PLEASE do we are the tigers!! it's one of the best musicals ever. the creator, preston max allen, is cool with the video being passed around so long as the whole thing isn't posted on youtube, so if you'd like i can send you a video of the performance to react to!
Appreciate that, but if he doesn't want it posted on RUclips maybe I shouldn't react to the video, right? The cast recording is definitely on the list though :)
@@Barbara2.0 i do see your point about that, but also, so long as the whole thing isn't posted, i think he'd be fine with it! although it is up to you, the musical is a murder mystery and therefore is better watched instead
Oh I see. I'll look into it. Thanks for letting me know, Beck!
Barbara just rocking the series
for your information this is all based on the movie series starship troopers. but seeing this before the movies gives a different exspirience. its not like the movies are super plot heavy lol. but they are fond memories nontheless.
“i wonder what they did with the props, i want the green one”
*flashbacks to when i helped destroy the set of my school musical*
Amazing! I love this show! Very very good!!!!
So excited to watch this after work
PERFECT. BIRTHDAY. GIFT!!!! I mean, almost.
