Darren not only looks like he‘s the least prepared- he actually is. He arrived from Glee set 3 HOURS before the start of this originally 5 hour long show.
And the end with the saying goodbye always makes me cry because for a moment Darren slips out of character and it‘s not Harry saying goodbye to Hogwarts but Darren saying goodbye to Starkid.
That's what broke my heart about that end. You can definitely tell it's Darren saying goodbye :,(

I did a reading of it and it was the most insane ten minutes of any zoom call I’ve ever been in
Fun Facts!
At the end of this is the end this is the end, Meredith told Joey they were all going to snort so Joey does it but no one else and you can see the look of betrayal on her face.
Darren was still on the glee at this point and this caused a couple of issues. Darren only had like one day of rehearsal. They also couldn’t use his voice for the album so Clark Baxtresser sings for him.
The reason the music sounds so different is that the music for the first two shows was written by Darren. The music for this show was originally going to be written by fans but then Clark and AJ (I believe) wrote music and the Lang’s used that instead. That’s how Robert Manion got involved. He won the song writing competition and the costume design competition.
Britney Coleman (Bellatrix) actually improvised her part in When You Have to go All the Way Home. Nick Lang was really she did though.
Gilderoy is played by AJ Holmes. He was actually the understudy for elder Cunningham in Book of Mormon!
Nick Lang still prefers Toby Maguire over Tom Holland.
The person playing the candy lady is their manager. The narrator is her husband.
The Lang brothers think they ended the series prematurely and that they should have done more.
The unedited show was 5 hours long and they had to take an early intermission cause the actors had to pee. It included a scene of Nick Lang as a half goat anti christ and it is implied that he and Voldemort experimented sexually together. There is also a scene of gilderoy with the mice after he shrinks himself.

I legit just realized that Gilderoy was interested in Hermione’s first work when they met because she said that he fell in love with a “mousy girl” in it, and his dream is to be a Mouse Prince😂
The cast consists of almost every Starkid up to that point. Since it was the last AVPM they made it such a big thing and that's why the cast is so big
Tyler (Lucius/Cedric) was a Rockette when this show was put on. That is the reason for the line

Gilderoy's mouse prince monologue is my favorite thing, ever. It is just so ridiculous, and it never fails to make me laugh. 😂 AJ is awesome.
@Barbara 2.0 Darren has short hair in this because he was in the middle of filming Glee at the time. So that's his Blaine haircut. Because he arrived at the convention the day of the show due to his Glee shooting schedule, he was only able to make the rehearsal on the day of the show. That's right. Darren Criss did all of this with only ONE rehearsal.
The Narrator is Bob Joles. He's a pretty prolific Voice Actor and the husband of Pat Brady, the lady that played "The Candy Lady." Pat Brady is also Team Starkid's Company Agent.
"This School Is Mine" wasn't the original Wizard Duel Song. Team Starkid actually held a competition for fans to compose a song for that scene. Robert Manion wrote and composed the winning song. The song is SO good. But it's so complicated that, especially with Darren's schedule, there was absolutely no way for either him or Lauren to learn that song. So AJ wrote "This School Is Mine." Since they didn't use his song, they offered him a role in Twisted. He accepted and never left, actually moving from Australia to L.A. to pursue acting and Starkid. If you're interested, there is footage on RUclips of Starkid presenting Robert's song and the other winner's song (can't remember which scene that song was for) at a Q&A Panel.
They screwed up with Darren's Mic and it didn't actually record. So when you hear him sing, it's actually being recorded from the stage mic. Hence why he doesn't sound as clear as everyone else.
"When I Was" is a totally underrated song.
AJ Holmes, who played Gilderoy Lockhart, played Elder Cunningham in multiple different tours of "The Book of Mormon" from 2012 to 2018. So, yeah, dude is legit. Darren Criss did go on record in a Starkid interview as saying that he felt that AJ Holmes is a virtuoso. As a pianist myself, I'm inclined to agree with that assessment.
If you didn't cry during the end sequence, I would have thought there was something wrong with you. :p
I LOVE when Darren shouts out AJ's talent
Robert didn't get invited into Twisted because they didn't use his song, he got invited because after AVPSY, Meredith needed someone to quickly fill in and perform with her band (Jim and the Povolo's) and Robert hadn't gone back to Australia yet so he was still in the area after going to see AVPSY. They really liked his voice and everything as they'd heard his contest song, so she asked him if he'd help out and perform with them. Knowing his talent, they kept in touch and he was able to audition for Twisted. He wasn't the only contest winner for AVPSY there were several, 2 winners who wrote songs and several others who designed costumes.
I never knew I needed a mashup of One Step Ahead and This is The End but I'm not upset by it-

The guy who plays Gilderoy is called A.J. Holmes. He wrote a lot of the lyrics and music for the earlier shows (like Jeff does now) and often was in the band that played the music during the shows. In Starkid Homecoming (which I highly recommend if you’re finished with all the shows) he is in the orchesta and pops out of it for a bit for this song! If I am wrong about anything or you want to know more please tell me!

Darren was busy with Glee at the time, he had either one or two days to prepare while everyone else had a bit longer

@@Sam-tk6dq lol Nick said that not only did Darren only got at the convention like less than 3 hours before the curtains opened but he got there thinking they were only doing a normal stage reading like Nick had told people they were doing, not an entire production with costume and all that so poor Darren had literally no idea what was going on, the only instructions he got was to follow Joey around😂😂😂

@@under_duck_622 The "flying diary" line wasn't improvised. That was in the script. Just like Joey and the Taylor Lautner Poster in Sequel. Starkid likes to do that; write in a scene that feels like it's improvised due to a screw up, but really isn't.
Honestly it was the best one, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RED VINES. Yeah, the avps was my first one and im too attracted to it.
This trilogy is a trip and a half that never should of been, but we are blessed it is. There is no other musical, I think, that can replicate the entire audience hearing a name, and sharing collective excitement and groans. Many do, but not many alter the timeline in such a fun, interesting, and surprising way.
I don't want to derail the love for this series and this franchise, but if you want something equally dumb and very fun, I suggest Avenue Q. Its like Sesame Street for adults. That's not a metaphor, it is Sesame Street for adults, in every way you can think of.

33:10 pretty sure the construction guy is supposed to be Dumbledore in disguise. As established in AVPM, if he puts on slightly different clothes, he isn’t recognizable.
The fact that Dylan had that beard on below his chin like he does with Dumbledore’s beard, and that he did Dumbledore’s accent makes me think I’m right 😊

Fun fact time! This show is long already, but the version the performed at the convention itself was even longer at over 4 hours including setup.
I think the Spies similarities may have to do with the fact that TalkFine did music for Spies and helped on this show.

Gilderoy is played by AJ Holmes. He’s helped score and accompany a lot of Starkid Stuff, he had a heavy hand in the music for Twisted, and has played Elder Cunningham in the tour of Book of Mormon, he’s CRAZY talented

Now you know why we said Ron is perfect in AVPSY? Sidekick is a masterpiece for his character, and the scene when he's trying to take Harry back and cries... Well, that always makes me cry. "Harry, he's got Hermione! And i can't do anything to help her!" - the way he sais it always breaks my heart. And the way he talks to Harry... Damn, that hurts. And that IS Ron the way i love him.
Also, "Everything ends" hits a little too close to home to me. I love it. But it's always painful.
And... Lauren crying after Darren's "that's why it's a good thing that we're friends"... It wasn't Draco i believe. It was 100% Lauren for me. And that made me feel things.
Yeah I totally get why people were saying "wait for it" concerning Ron now. And I totally agree, sidekick is an amazing character song

Honestly, my reaction first time watching [once I stopped crying] was basically "Play _Everything Ends_ at my funeral bc they have killed me so many times in 1 freaking show." 💀 All. The. FEELS.😭
This show is so chaotic, but that's one of the reasons I love it so much. The circumstances for putting this on were insane & they 💯 could've simply done a table read as planned, but they went so far beyond. Their passion & love for this series & their fan base & each other is palpable. And that even their slapdash content is of this quality? It's *absurd!* 😉
I know you’ll probably get a lot of requests for Holy Musical B@man because it’s so good, but I really love Ani (their Star Wars musical) and want to see your reaction! When you watch it, please go in without expectations-you wouldn’t be able to expect a single things honestly.
Yesssss ani is maybe the highest amount of jokes per minute and also manages to be lovely and heartfelt
highly recommend Holy Musical B@man!! it’s got one of the best casts of a starkid musical in my opinion (which is saying something!!) and is my favorite musical of theirs in large part due to the major nostalgia i get as someone raised on superhero comics. one of the most notable distinctions between hmb and other starkid shows is its sense of humor: it’s not as crass throughout Most of the show (not all of it, of course) and is unfairly witty with a downright obscene amount of puns. really think you’d enjoy it!!!

Idk if you’ve finished watching all the starkid musicals but tcb (tin can bros) have made the solve it squad (not really a musical but a hilarious parody of scooby doo) and the wayward guide a werewolf show. They aren’t musicals but I think you would really like them:) just a suggestion ❤️

I would like to say that the origins to the Snickers joke is that one day during AVPM Joe asked Jim to get him a protein bar, and as a prank Jim got him a Snickers. By the time Jim got back Joe was completely in character so he just turned around and yelled *”SNICKERS?!?”* in the Voldemort voice (there’s a video of him talking about it on yt)
i didn't realize it until bingeing these reaction videos tonight that voldemort's opening line for To dance again is the same tune as the opening line of Always dance. and some of the lyrics are also borrowed. it makes for some top notch storytelling. and yes, making joe sing after all that WAS mean! but starkids are... a different breed of excellence.
This show might actually be my favourite out of the trilogy, I love all the character development and Voldemort's backstory. By the way, the music was written by the same people as the music for Spies Are Forever, so that's probably why they sound so similar. I actually never noticed that!

Gilderoy Lockhart was played by AJ Holmes, who co-composed the first AVPM, this show, and Twisted with Darren. He also played piano in the pit for AVPM , so you can sort of spot him if you rewatch it, and makes a cameo in Starship as the guy who got eaten by Pincer in the flashback video. When this came out, he had already gone pro in the touring production for Young Frankenstein as Frederick Frankenstein, and he has since gone on to play Elder Cunningham in multiple productions of The Book of Mormon. So yes, he is totally awesome :)

I know I'm late to your reaction to this, but it had me right back in my feels watching you react to this.
I remember when I first watched AVPSY. It was after the final book and film came out - back when that was it. There was just no more Harry Potter to look forward to. (Before Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts were on the radar.) And this musical made me UGLY cry with the final few songs and the final monologues.
And yes, I reacted the SAME way when I first watched this and saw Evanna on stage.

Btw you might have said it somewhere already but will you be doing Nightmare Time? :D oh, and I know you probably get a lot of requests but I really recommend that you watch Wayward Guide For The Untrained Eye by the Tin Can Bros! It's not a musical but it's a really cool series that includes like. Every Starkid/Tin Can Bros/Shipwrecked member ever haha

Draco's friend Dora at the beginning is a real children's tv character, Dora the Explorer. Of course her inclusion is still highly random (we would expect no less), but the Spanish makes sense because Dora the Explorer does teach bits of Spanish.
I recommend the musicals Once On This Island (2017 revival) which is based loosely on the Little Mermaid, and Come From Away which is the musical adaptation of a collection of memoirs from 9/11 and 48 planes had to stay in a small town in Newfoundland. Both of them are really underrated in my opinion.

This one is a wild ride that I don't think I've watched the whole way through more than once, but I love the message of the show, and how it brings those nostalgic feelings for HP back in a way that also says goodbye to the franchise. Also, yes, Hermione wrote the Harry Potter books, I agree, why would anyone ever say any different?
Here's a suggestions of a musical (that has no relation to Starkid) to add to the list because I've been obsessing over the soundtrack for a solid two weeks now: Come From Away - please give that a listen, it is amazing!

i love watching your reactions to starkid, specifically the harry potter musicals, because it lets me relive watching them for the first time :')
the end of this one was a big goodbye to harry potter and that resonates in a different way now that a lot of fans are getting older and growing out of the fandom (and now i'm about the age that a good portion of starkid actors were at the time of this musical and that just hit me like a ton of bricks WOW), AND with all the jk rowling stuff going on a lot of people have sort of given up on harry potter. i'll never be able to get over my favorite series from childhood but dang those ending speeches gets me every time. i love starkid so much and i love watching you love them too!!

I only now got to watch this vid cause I hadn’t watched AVPSY when this was posted... I’ve been a fan of Starkid for almost 5 years but only yesterday did I watch this musical. All these years I was not ready to say goodbye to their Harry Potter universe which is ironic considering the message of this show is that it is okay to let go.

I'll be honest... I don't love this one. Not because of the production values, like for some, but for the story - most of it up until the end just came off as mean-spirited to me, more so than even the first one? Particularly the Voldemort flashbacks? Idk? I've also never loved Chamber of Secrets in general outside of the film version, so that might be part of it. Also, they once again did Hermione dirty, just in a completely different way XD.
That said, it has its high points: "This is the End", "Gilderoy," "This School is Mine," "Sidekick," and of course the freaking return of "Back to Hogwarts" are all bangers, and "When I Was Harry Potter" was quite lovely. There was so much love put into this, and as this was the last Starkid production for a number of the players, it is quite bittersweet.
PS - Also, ironically, the Cedric/Lily pairing, as absolutely garbage as it is, does kind of make sense if you consider Lily was 19 when she died while Cedric was 17 or 18? Buuuuttt, still messed up.
I just started watching and heard you say “at least a the audio improved a lot” and I winced for you lol I hope someone gave you a heads up before you watched this that it was put together very last minute and they were reading from scripts
It makes sense how Darren is the least prepared, pretty sure the reason this was only in leaky con is because he was already on glee and together with this fact during the space tour concert dvd interviews Meredith mentions how Darren was always the worst student, as in he wouldn't show up to classes or don't do stuff but then sail through on talent. And this tracks with him still nailing the role in this while def being the least prepared.

@@Barbara2.0 You should check out Tessa Netting's RUclips Channel. Tessa is Joe's Fiancée. She has him bust out Snape occasionally for bits on her Channel. Like she has a video of him reading some video comments as Snape. She's also in the Tin Can Bros production "Spies Are Forever." Oh and she and Curt Mega did a parody of "I Wanna Be" from Starship, but instead of them wanting to be a Starship Ranger, it was "I Wanna Be A Starkid Actor." It's on RUclips. The irony, of course, is that, now, they both kinda are Starkid Actors. Curt Mega (who, incidentally, is ALSO in "Spies Are Forever" as the Main Character) was in Black Friday. He was the President of The United States. So, while Tessa is tangentially a Starkid by virtue of being a Tin Can Bro and marrying a Starkid, Curt Mega is, legit, a Starkid now. Funny how fate works. :D
Darrens voice in this was owned by Glee at the time of filming, so they had to alter the sound whenever he was singing to not get sued. That’s why it sounds like his mic goes in and out every now and again
No it's because his mic was was messed up and wasn't picking up his voice. What was recorded came from the Stage Mic, hence why it sounds so echo-y and far away. It wasn't intentional.

So the guy who played Alastair, moaning mertyl and Tom riddle senior is Chris Allan. He is really funny and I love his voices. He plays Alfred in Hoy Musical Batman and Anikan in Anie. If you are a star wars and Batman need I highly recommend them! Ani doesn’t get enough credit because it came out the same time Trail to Oregon but it’s sooo funny! The songs are also Clark!

ASGHSFRDLJG YES! The trilogy is complete! I feel like I say this every starkid show, but there are some phenomenal classics in this show, my personal favorite being Everything Ends, which always makes my heart hurt ;;. I am also of the opinion that this version of Gilderoy is 100% the best, and that 👏 Scarfy deserved better 👏. I also find it a little funny that the bromance between Harry and Ron is so much better than pretty much every other romantic relationship in the AVP series, (excluding quirrelmort of course). Another wonderful reaction 💖!

Just a side note on the bit where a bunch of Slytherins come into the room and in the background was a few bars of “Cool” from West Side Story.
Also, when I was watching your AVPS video I noticed the doorway/arch in the background looks similar to the cover art on the first book, so at one point when Harry crossed the arch and caught the snitch he was replicating the cover art. Dunno if anyone else pointed that out for you.
