I drove a 1969 VW van from Western Idaho to Western Indiana (where I attended undergrad) in the middle of the winter (early January). The aftermarket, gas powered heater gave up after just 50 miles. I was wearing three layers under a full-on snowmobile suit, woolen socks, winter boots, gloves and mittens, and an Elmer Fudd hat for the four days it took to make my way 2,000 miles. Oh, and my top speed, going downhill WITH a tailwind, was 55. Going over the mountain passes in Wyoming was particularly embarrassing. I literally drove on the shoulder in second gear with my warning flashers on so that the semitrucks in the "slow" lane could blow by me. Sleeping on the windswept plains of Iowa was super not fun. Had to get up every hour or so to run into the rest stop bathroom to use the hand dryer to warm up. The trip back in the Spring damn near killed me (multiple times) and I ended up abandoning the rig in Salt Lake and hitching the rest of the way to Boise. I now drive a much more modern rig and I won't be going back. Ha!!

Dang, gotta work on your preplanning skills 😂 minimum should have expected breakdowns and had some road flares to put out so you don’t get clobbered on the side of the freeway like that. They sell battery powered ones, invest in some. Also an AAA membership for towing! Also they have battery powered heated blankets, jackets, gloves, sleeping bags, etc. Or at the minimum grab some hot hands at Walmart for your feet and for under Callie’s blanket.

Aside from the anxiety/panic that this series is inducing in us, you are showing very good real-world charging experiences especially for AC charging. I think you and your viewers would benefit greatly from checking out Kyle Connor’s channel out OUT OF SPEC and his Vlogs concerning the charging experience for the newer fast DC charging connections. This is what people really need to know about before investing in an EV or indeed converting one. I drove my converted VW bus on sunshine for over a year but only because I charged at home. Going on the road is an entirely different matter, as our friend Jack Smith has shown, in his and Electric Tribute to the Lincoln Highway cross country round-trip earlier this year in Michael Bream‘s converted VW bus. Afterwards, in that same bus, I learned some of the same lessons on our annual border to border VW caravan.

I started watching your channel for this series and I like it. I love this kind of adventures. A little advice for you is not to make the 12v battery lose all its energy because that makes it not work permanently. Buy a new backup full battery , and when the battery in the car loses 75% of its energy, chang it immediately , thats how u save the battery to not die , best wish for u and safe trip

I am loving watching your adventure and have enjoyed many of your other vlogs. The only thing that makes me worry in your vlogs is the human food Callie eats. You have such a special bond with her and I believe you only have her best interests at heart but there are foods and spices that can make her very sick or worse fatality harm her. So often people think dogs can eat everything we eat and sadly that isn't true. I would feel so much sadness if something happened to your sweet Callie girl due to food she had eaten and I hadn't said anything. Sending positive, healthy vibes to you and your little family.

You are operating under a nearly continuous level of maximum stress that I am feeling as well. I have to remind myself that I am in a safe, warm place with plenty of food, heat and bathroom facilities. When you are at the side of the road with 2% batteries I begin to sweat. I now believe the most important emergency resource for a trip like this is a 6000w gas powered generator, just in case the vehicle goes to 0% in the middle of nowhere. You need greater range that would allow you to use the 80/20 charge/discharge rule...or LiFePO4 batteries that would let you safely go to 95%/5%.
You are a brave man, Charlie Brown!
