It warms my heart to see people still enjoying this song I wrote. Cranius and I shared a phone call way way back and asked me if he could use the music I wrote and preformed originally. I knew I didn't have the time then to dedicate to a professional recording and thought that hey, the community really loved this tune and I might as well let it go to someone who has the chops to take it to the next level. So a big thanks again to you Cranius for making 'The Lament of Captain Placeholder' as great as it could be! - Eledainn-
LoL Darren, I just started playing the new Xpac today and realized I hadn't heard your song in years so I came here. I remember when you first played it for us at the old Mercury studio and we had the guild going....good times.
+Molliieee It makes me feel good again about World of Warcraft... This world has touched so many hearts... I heard stories of disabled people or whatever who could not get out of their houses and felt lonely and whatnot... but they found a new world to explore within their houses and were so to say saved by world of warcraft, from lonelyness and depression... This game is truly something special. And I can say this although there are way better games (graphicwise, gameplaywise or even storywise) out there... WoW is not dead. And it is still awesome...
klonvomhaus My dad showed me WoW when I was about 5/6 and I was too scared of all of the wolves to actually do anything, but I loved the game. Even though I've always sucked at it, it has a special place in my heart.
Being that currently the boat to Darnassus in Stormwind is broken, Argent Dawn (EU) has it's own resident Captain Placeholder. Someone went through the time and effort to create a Captain Placeholder character in RP, and have him provide portals to anyone who would need to get across to Darnassus. I donated 100g to this guy (although it isn't much, I didn't have that much on hand) for being just that epic, and he was actually a really cool guy out of character too. We need more people like this in our world.
As I am playing on Argent Dawn EU atm I must say, that the community has not yet died. A big war campaign is being played atm, it is being done regulary and that is on the Horde side alone. Ally have 90% of the server population, RP is everywhere :)
blazingdog offire i came in towards the end of BC, but that was, like, 7 years ago. i dont remember, though... i remember having a dreanei DK during wrath, and a tauren Arms warrior during BC. I have gone back in time and played vanilla, AKA i played on a private server. It was fun... they had put captain placeholder in there too, so it was pretty cool going into menethil and seeing this weird sailor guy just standing their, occasionally waving at people. he didn't "Send us 'cross the land" though... when you clicked on him he'd just say Greetings! I wonder how they did it... they may have used WoW-v.com... idk :\
All this time later, this truly is a time capsule of the passion that the community once had for Azeroth and its universe. The days when a useful test NPC could inspire a full song, and a damn good one at that. Rest in peace, Blizzard. You will be remembered for the highs, and forgotten for the lows.
He did _kinda_ return in SL and onwards as Captain Exposition, an NPC who appeared in Alpha and Beta builds who would serve as a stand-in for cutscenes that hadn't been programmed in yet.
Reminds me of back in the old days...when hunters used ammo and no one could find Mankrik's wife, and it was actually an achievement to explore all of Azeroth...good times...good times
*Barrens Chat* [1. General] [Somelowlevel]: CAN SOMEONE PLZ TELL ME WHERE MANKRIKS WIFE IS?! [1. General] [Everyotherperson]: STFU ive heard that so many times now u fking casual
This song is not just a tribute to some random NPC back in the day; it is a symbolic song about the good old days of WoW, for those of us who were around to remember them. Captain P himself is really just representing the past. How silly, yet simpler things were back then (mainly due to most us being younger of course, but still). Saying "farewell" to Captain Placeholder symbolizes waving goodbye to our past. He is a symbol of nostalgia, and good memories. We can linger there and re-call fond memories, but at some point we all have to wake up and face reality, even if we don’t want to. The “emptiness inside” is reminiscent of the pain we all feel when we think back to the past, missing it, wanting to experience it again, but never being able to. We can log into WoW, we can go back to where our characters used to be, but we will never have the same magical feeling inside us again, something is missing, we are “empty”. “Inside our hearts dear Placeholder will always be alive” is a very fitting end to the song. The days of old WoW may be over, but we will forever carry the memories with us, and no one can take them away. It’s a very catchy song too!
To this day I still return to this song. To this tale of a beloved, albeit fictional, person, who was never intended to become as memorable as he ended up, simply because of how much fans loved all the small things added to the game. It makes me sad that we rarely have something like this happen today.
no game ever had center stage of the hardcore gamers since this. blizzard was a titan. people never came together again since this even not including just games
I never thought I'd feel so incredibly emotionally attached to a throwaway band-aid NPC I never saw in a beta I never played from a game I haven't touched in a decade.
This video is a classic, and hits me right in the nostalgia. Fun facts about Captain P, and why he even existed in the first place: - The boat from Menethil was repeatedly broken during Vanilla, and would periodically take passengers far out to sea, and then vanish, dropping them to die (literally) of fatigue. - Blizzard added Captain P. so Alliance players could get from one continent to the other, while they attempted to fix the boat system. - The CEO of Blizz even hand-wrote an apology letter to players regarding the error (as well as addressing server stability issues). This was a very different time, before WoW became as main-steam as it is today. 3:18 though...now even Theramore is gone. WoW has changed so much. :*(
It would be cool if they way you get to the south seas is that captain place holder has a dock that is a sanctuary so no pvp can happen , but he takes both horde and alliance to the south seas expansion.
All the comments are so old, you just feel that so many people lost their love for the game. Even I don't play it anymore, just come here with my guitar to play this song and reminisce on the old days. It was amazing
This may make me sound really young for this comment section, but I remember listening to this back when I was around 14 and it filling me with a strange sort of nostalgia for a time I wasn't even around for in terms of WoW, and being really touched by it. I am now sitting here at 23, getting in the mood for re-subbing to retail and I am full on crying to it. 11 years after I started playing WoW, it's now so very actually nostalgic it just hurts in a good way. I can now also hear how much of a genuinely great, great job both lyrics and vocals are. Man, thank you for this. Here's to hoping I'll wash up back here in another decade.
Shoutout to the awesome WoW community! I am not a part of it and neither are any of my good friends, but you guys are an amazingly strong, respectable community. Keep gaming, my friends!
You must mean the old wow community, that was true gold,if you take a look at wow now you'll just see the difference from the old times,it's actually sad.
I honestly felt an immense wave of nostalgia, as I spoke to the NPC on Menethil Docks in October, 2022 to travel to Northrend. The NPC is no longer called Captain Placeholder, but, what's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.
How sweet to see players waiting for boats. Now everyone just flys there, but it reminds me of my old WoW days when my good friend and I would role play there. Thanks for bringing back the memories. :)
imo..they should remove flying on azeroth... but then all the kids start complaining cause they dont have patients..they will never know how it was to walk up to 40 and only then getting a mount
Man.... . These game change our life so much. Look at us here. All difrent age, lifes, factions bound together by probably the best game who was ever made. I know its no longer the same. But, the moments we spent in these world.... . Tank Thank you Blizzard! Tank you Cranius!
No matter how long it'll be since I played WoW, I will always return to these songs. I never got to interact with him, but I'll sing along to this and raise a glass high for Captain Placeholder.
Every time I listen to this, I get the slap of nostalgia to da face, this song is perfect example of how simpler things were back then and that such minor things would make someones day, nowdays you bearly know anyone and Blizz just gives everything to you without needing to leave major city 😭😭
This is what it's like to grow old. You start remembering things that people around you have probably not experienced, and you think back on those moments or people dearly. Yet we always forge on. Thanks Captain and thanks Cranius for this beautiful song.
I had a Screenshot on my old computer wherein me and the guild were all dancing around Cpt. Placeholder. It was actually fairly emotional when my PC had to be wiped :(
I'll agree with you there, I left not long before MoP came out, although at the moment I'm currently playing WoW again out of sheer boredom, playing in the same old guild just different people that I don't know so it doesn't feel the same and I guess I miss the old days of WoW.
This song and Darrowshire. Those two take me back. I raise my wine glass, glad I come still find these songs on youtube and enjoy them all these years later.
I played Alliance during Vanilla and a part of BC, and then went Horde for the remainder of my time. Finding this, just gave me a rush of memories from my olden days waiting for the boat. The feels :(
every so often I pull up these older warcraft vids to feel the nostalgia wave roll by. Good times long gone, can't bring them back but for a moment it's almost there.
People, I think I got it! Placedholder's ship is just on the other side of Azeroth, and when we can go there he'll be there, it's so clear! Honestly though, with the amount of fans this guy has, even though he was just a beta character, I wouldn't be surprised if he does return even just as a joke one day. Time will tell my friends, only time will tell.

Man you're a freaking legend! I still remember/listen to your big blue dress song :D gives me goosebumps just singing the lyrics in my head, for some reasonxD
I'm playing mage in wow classic now and I've decided 'to make portals for free for anyone that asks in honour of captain placeholder! Cheers to Captain P!
The nostalgia when listening to all of Cranius' titles. Praying for his return :) Will never forget the time I met him in-game and he told me he's working on a project with Legs, only to find The Story 2 coming out a month or so later. Good times :)
We still miss you Captain Placeholder! I hope you're having some great adventures, wherever you may be... /salute
nobbel you are a a LEGEND too ^^
Love your videos, Nobbel!

Hey. Hi. Thanks for the song. :) It still pops into my head every now and then.
***** My absolute pleasure Ellis. Glad it still lingers on!
You deserve a medal for writing this song. You have my respect and therefore, I salute you, sir.
BampfTV And I salute you sir!
It's 2023 and I'm not crying. You're crying.
It's 2024 and I still ain't crying. You're crying.
we all crying let's just admit it. 😢😢😢
We both are my friend
I have never interacted with Captain Placeholder
yet, this song touched me on an emotional level
+Molliieee exactly the same, -wipes tears away-
+Molliieee I feel like singing this in the street at the top of my lungs, even though it's 2 am.
+Molliieee Amen. I hear that.
That's so awesome! Guess he was Captain Placeholder's Captain Placeholder ^^

2024 we still miss you Captain Placeholder!
Well i think Nixxiom is Captain Placeholder because he teleported me here...
I agree :D
Ditto! I was around for vanilla, but I only came in just before BC and totally missed this guy :(
blazingdog offire good for you! :D
blazingdog offire i came in towards the end of BC, but that was, like, 7 years ago. i dont remember, though... i remember having a dreanei DK during wrath, and a tauren Arms warrior during BC. Fart Vader He was probably Captain Placeholder's first mate.
"Captain P you'll never know,
The emptiness inside,
As we sit ashore in Stormwind Port,
Waitin' for a ride."

Blink, blink ah man 10 years or was it 20 that went by.
Hugs 🫂

Damn right we do

Maybe, just maybe, Captain Placeholder is the guy from the MoP cinematic!
I thought that it was Admiral Taylor
Valkaring Nope. No one knows who the orc and human are in the cinematic.
Isabel Wenzel well, yes they do. It's Admiral Taylor.
FlagueDehman It is? From what I heard from people, they didn't know who it was.
Who knows ? The second one should be General Nazgrim than, and he don´t absolutely like the orc in the video. It can be anyone...
Still here. Still miss this time. Still remember this when it was on Google Video.

words describe best how I feel about wow, about past
i miss the old days ...
+Mangs Well constructed comment, cheers for old memories :' )
+Clay™ you wouldn't understand, you never played vanilla.
Captain Placeholder has become relevant once again with the dark and stormy launch of WOTLK "Classic". Never forget.
2019, still lamenting....
Eturyu Eternity Right there with you, brother. Merry Christmas! Cheers to Cap’n P.
we should petition for Captain Placeholder to become a lore character
he already is *wipes tears*
At least they could do is add him to hearthstone!!
He basically is, Blizzard adds a Captain Placegolder somewhere to expansions since Pandaria now. There's one in Suramar right now
Moon Man how is captain p not on hearthstone?
He's back in The War Within Alpha.
Up-rezed and as magnificent as the day we lost him.
Perhaps Captain Placeholder can take us to the Broken Isle in World of Warcraft: Legion. We miss you captain.
Based Memestar he could take us to kul tiras in the next expansion
I learned about Captain Placeholder today 08/2023. WOW I love this game /salute captain!
Lots of memories. Hard to watch this.
I know man, I thought the same thing when I saw it. its silly to think this game had such an impact
+James Alaimo ik
Yeah I totally agree :P
I was 17. And now I am 32. It's not the same, and it's sacred that it stays in history. But golly.. still chokes me up.

It happens in SoM just happened to me lol
It's 2021 and this song still gets me every time!
Its fine guys, Placeholder finally got a ship.
He'll come sailing in to save the day during the South Seas expansion.
Which will never happen.

it makes me happy people are still watching/ commenting on this :)
I stopped playing WoW about a year ago now, but I remember the good captain, I still love this song :) Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
In the final expac against the Legion or Old Golds. PlaceHolder needs to lead the combined armada of Horde and Alliance ships in the final charge.
***** that would be amazing
I'm still giving this a listen. Sometimes its just nice to remember better days.
I hope this never leaves RUclips.
We need him back! Zeppelins and Boats aren't working :(
right!?
This beauty of a song just got a callout and cover on the new Warcraft Drawfee episode
That's what brought me here as well
I'm 6 years late and I love this.

John Björkman
Most yes. But there are still good people. Mostly on RP realms. but still. many WoW players are selfish fucks.
Hello Captain from 2022... we still miss you.
Farewell to thee Cranius..... This is some kinda melancholic nostalgia
Captain Placeholder didn't arrive when the boats and zeps stopped working over the past week...
Love your work Cranius , I found you from big blue dress all those years ago
Keep jamming my friend
Miss your music Cranius! Legend :)
man finding this after so many years
been a dormant memory yet i remember the tune and lyrics
solid banger
They should put this song in the game...
ShadowZeal Definitely a rare playing of this song in the tavern nearby.
Would be a legendary Easter egg.
This song is so much nostalgia. Thanks Cranius and Eledainn!
Placeholder may have become a Deathknight and tought them the Death grip Bug which also sent you across Azeroth ^^
+Orkar Isber (Estar) ASMR? ::p
I really enjoyed this game. It has left me behind. I love these songs reminding me of my early days

ty 4 this ...omg how to stop wow now =((
This is late but you still have to take a boat to get to other continents, either that or portals.
Boats Are Great :D and with random (jaw open noob) solo sucks
Awww 🥰 I'm so glad this song's still here. I still miss him.
this is an excellent song for literally anyone whos missing someone at the moment.

Shoutout to X
Placeholder needs to be a garrison follower
YES!!!
I still come back here and think about our times with captain placeholder
This song was actually so good it gave me chills.
This video doubles for me as a testament to what that dock used to be, and how utterly dead it is today.
It saddens me greatly that a song as genius as this hasn't even got a mil views :/
it simply amazes me how someone can make such a touching song out of something as simple as a WoW npc :')
This song has 1.4 mil views now
No matter how long it'll be since I played WoW, I will always return to these songs. I never got to interact with him, but I'll sing along to this and raise a glass high for Captain Placeholder.
A fucking awesome tribute to a npc. Thank you Eledainn and Cranius for this wonderful song.
Truly, he was the best of us. Fair winds and clear skies, Captain.

Captain Placeholder's legend surfaces once more!
this song comes to my mind every time im in menethil, all these years later
O Captain! My Captain!
Forever in our hearts!
...Robin Williams...You made me cry again...
My late wife who played WoW with me most times, loved this song. RIP Sabetheli😢 you were an awesome wife and warlock❤
Sorry for your loss 😢 may she rest in peace.

Anything's possible...

your assistance and services are greatfully appreciated and will be missed
Farewell to you placeholder your ship has sailed to sea we'll tip our hats and pray one day to be as great as thee
I play this on loop during Ulduar HM Prog with my Guild
2021, still lamenting
still as good now 14 years later
They just don't write songs like this anymore. ♥
Ah hell at least he held a place. So many years go by and I remember it still. And until I die, he will have a place somewhere.
Man you're a freaking legend! I still remember/listen to your big blue dress song :D gives me goosebumps just singing the lyrics in my head, for some reasonxD
whoohidini 91 The beat is almost the same. :) That song got me to play Mage haha.

i get the feels everytime i hear this, but i love the feels.
I remember Captain Placeholder, and Captain Placeholder's Lament. Oh, those old days.
This is my travelling song in WoW, such a good tune to listen to while walking along the roads, especially near the sea, Captain P. we miss you.
I haven't played WoW in many years, but I still love this song.
Its been so long, ten years, i listened to it and got the most chills i have ever gotten
This song makes me want to love WoW again, warms my heart every time i hear it.
Can't you come back and make the world feel magical again?
Come along my friends, let's raise a glass up for his name!
Inside our hears dear Placeholder will always be alive!
Song makes me tear up every time. Dont know why i keep coming back to it.
