During wotlk should have done around same character as war3 dk era as it was that arthas alone but no he became really one dimensional character in classic-wotlk. Then war3 his story uses so much cliches from 70-90 fantasy books like frostmourne( before SL) it was pretty much stolen from Works of Michael moorcock sword called the stormbringer. Then arthas and jainas romance made no sense as novels before war3 made it clear Wizards were hated and distrusted by all human kingdoms. Then good intended human Prince walks towards the path of damnation and Falls that was a overused cliche in 80's novels and many of them did that better blizzard did. Then uther and kel'thuzad are both mentor figure cliches for that kind of character which again blizz used. Using that many cliches and not Even doing it better than those novels from 70's-90's you can't have a character Be called well written.
they had a chance to make a movie trilogy based entirely around Arthas. And the brilliant minds behind the Warcraft movie decided to play the super long game and copy the MCU, hoping to save Arthas for a big baddie in a Warcraft Universe "phase 3." So instead of coming out the gate with their best story and character, they went "nah lets start at the very very beginning of Warcraft", which is something even some of the biggest Warcraft fans arent too familiar with nor that big fans of. Such wasted potential, they had a chance to do something no other movie universe can do, other than war movies, which is tell the same exact story, multiple times over and over and over again just from different perspectives. All they had to do was literally copy Warcraft 3. Tell the story of the lich king and burning legion from the perspective of all the other races after youve done the Arthas Trilogy. Arthas lost his way when he strayed off the path of the Light to seek revenge instead of justice and the safety of his people. Had he not claimed frostmourne, he would have never turned against his own.
Arthas is the best example i had seen of how you can do all teh things you consider rigth,do anything for your love ones, and still end in a dark side of the history.

Easily one of the greatest villains in all of fiction for me, and easily the single greatest villain of all of Warcraft. The only real mistakes Blizzard made were not having him be more personally involved as he could've been in Wrath, and of course, the fact that "there must always be a Lich King." That was dumb. Everything else though? The absolute peak of WoW, bar none. We knew from the very start of the expansion who our final foe ultimately would be. Our journey all across Northrend ultimately culminates in Icecrown, a bleak, cold, desolate wasteland, with the silhouette of the imposing citadel looming over in the distance. A fortress of dread. A monolith of despair. All our adventures, our struggles, our triumphs and losses, it all had brought us all to this moment. We pass through the gates that lead straight into an icy hell, and fight our way through to the top, every inch of our ascension met with ferocious resistance. Some of our allies fall in battle, only to be turned as our mortal foe, but we persist and press on, slaying mighty beasts and terrible abominations, pushing ever closer to the end, ascending ever higher to the summit of this terrible place. And there, the Lich King awaits us, at the very peak of the world, challenging us mortal heroes to come forth and try our damnedest to topple the throne he's sat upon, to pry his crown from his grasp. Everything we had done, everything we had fought for, bled for, had led us all to this very moment. A glimmer of hope, for a chance to end the nightmare that is the Scourge. The Lich King was the first thing I've ever seen from Warcraft. This dude was the introduction to it all. And what a fucking magnificent way to sell someone on this. The moment I saw that cinematic, I was captivated by it all. I had to experience it for myself. We will never truly get another character quite like Arthas, nor another villain of the same calibre as the Lich King. No villain has even come close, during my years when I was an active player. Nothing can even compare, in my eyes. Warcraft had gone downhill for a long while ever since Wrath, enough so that it's convinced me to never return. Some of the shit they've done is, I feel, irreparable. It's inexcusable that they dropped the ball this hard, when they've given us pure gold in the past. But that's not going to be the Warcraft I remember. It'll all fade away and be forgotten to time. But Arthas? The Lich King? Now that is a tale that's going to probably outlive some of us for a good while. I would personally hope it lasts for even longer than that. It's such a good tale, that it deserves to survive long past any of us. I was sold on Warcraft simply because of it's stories. And to the Blizzard of old? You had crafted your very best of them. And for that, I thank you. Now if only the lore and narratives these days could even hope to compare. (They don't.)

Arthas and Ner'Zhul are the heart of Warcraft, and the whole story wandered aimlessly after their end. They are definitely (together as the Lich King) my favorite game character, and easily in my top three fictional characters of all media.

20 years of World of Warcraft, and Arthas remains the undisputed best villain of the franchise. A tragic story that can move even the coldest of hearts.
Wild speculation and wishful thinking on my part for a better finale for Arthas….They could always write it that part of “the war within” is a part of Arthas’ soul is etched into Anduin’s. I thought the way Anduin raised his sword to Thrall in TWW trailer cinematic was exactly how Arthas did in WotLK cinematic when he was raising Sindragosa. It might be a hint at what could be, and with Metzen back creatively, it could be a great way to finish it properly this time.
I started playing Warcraft 3 back when I was 7 years old and He was my favorite chatacter along with Illidan. I was expecting to Arthas to return in the Shadowlands but that was a lie. Since his soul faded away he can't return.
Yeah back then they made cool relatable characters. I started young myself(more like 10 but still). Now they destroyed him they essentially killed a lot of what made the game cool, and also he was most deserving of a redemption arc. Also them destroying his soul doesn't make sense, because if that were possible, why wouldn't all the souls Frostmourne took also be destroyed? But if that were the case he wouldn't have been defeated at the end of Wrath. But you know that it was Blizzard trying to kill of old WoW. Arthas Menethil did nothing wrong!
@@osiris8251 i agree, honestly Arthas should've been a character we meet in the maw later on. A character that has survived for years, without being caught. I guess also depending if you killed him or not will change the dialogue. He saves us but only so he can use us in exchange to help us escape. As the expansion we get more and more of his side of the story of what happened with all that has happened leading up to wotlk. It allows him to explain what went on while still not making him into a complete "oh im sorry I want to be totally forgiven". He knows he'll never truly be forgiven, but he doesn't want that, he just wants to find peace with his soul. In his the only way that can ever be done, is if the Jailer dies
@@dabihwow5550 I don't know I think that WoW has been just doing downhill further and further, especially with the Dragonflight DLC. Honestly what I would like to see would be either a complete retcon to a certain point, with players who bought the retconned dlc comped in some manner. Or we bring him back entirely and just have new DLC. Maybe this whole dragonflight stuff gets nuked or turned into undead or something really horrible and old school style, because I don't think that this new kind of Spyro kind of stuff they are doing is working. Also who does new WoW even appeal to?
This is what World of Warcraft means. There was no legend, no legacy, no story behond this one. I loved every single detail of Wrath of the lich king. Call me anything, but I loved its love story of Jaina + Arthas, what he became, and what everything had gone because of the lich king... Such a deep story.
Arthas genuinely is one of the best characters story and design wise. Not many other characters come close besides like, Darth Vader but even he isnt as good as Arthas. Plus Arthas just looks badass in the lich king armor
tbh - i am sure Arthas is heavily inspired by Vader. I mean both are young, powerful leaders. Both had to made very hard decisions and ended on the "dark side" after reaching for more power to safe those they loved.
Fallen paladins were already a thing in D&D, but whoever wrote The major portion of the storyline in Warcraft 3 about the kings’ son, a great paladin and his dark path to power was a genius
atleast Illidan is alive and so is Kael'Thas, o wait.. Shadowlands didnt happen, it was just a feverdream (its a non canon expac for me.. filled with idiotic retcons and story that made no sense in the broader sense of the WoW lore). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4:35 This is honestly one of my favourite leitmotifs for a fictional character. It's like the Imperial March for Darth Vader, Why So Serious for the Joker, or Davy Jones' theme from Pirates of the Caribbean in that it perfectly encapsulates just who he is and sets the tone for every scene he's in and every action he takes.
And that is what killed the game for me. They did such a dirty move there and they literally brought him up just to get some emotion out of us, then just killed him off. Given that Sylvanas said for him to be forgotten I think that was more the company and developers saying that than anything. Given what they turned the game into with Dragonflight everything I loved about the game is gone and I will never come back.
@@dabihwow5550 Yeah but they decided to have the jailer use his soul in a weapon or something and that was what apparently destroyed him which honestly makes no sense. However, given that Sylvanis said for him to go and be forgotten after his soul was destroyed I think that was more of a message from Blizzard and the devs telling us to forget what we liked about WoW.
No one cares about retail. The real story ended when Arthas fell. But I'm glad blizz has a great opportunity to use Caverns of Retcon to do something big now that a ton of old players returned to play wrath classic and then SoD. If all the lucky stars align, we might get a completely new set of parallel expansions with a new story and less feature bloat. And no in-game store or mtx shit with wow tokens or thousands of e-peen cosmetics, or overall trying to pander to everyone instead of the core fans and ending up disappointing everyone. They have a billion dollar chance with SoD to start a parallel story.
When Shadowlands came out, I was hoping we would see him return and get his redemption arc…and maybe reunite with Jaina. Alas it was not to be. I hope he’s finally at peace at the very least.
What's with this trend of wanting redemption arcs for everyone? Illidan gets one, fucking Sylvanas of all people is getting one now too (and that one especially ticks me off), next thing I know, Gallywix is probably next to get one. It's already a trope, and one that's not executed too well in my opinion, at least with Warcraft specifically. What's wrong with just letting evil characters just be evil? Not everyone gets a happy ending, and sometimes going for said ending is more of a detriment to a story.

@@salehryan2906 Tell me about it. They lack nuance. He had the chance to kill everyone with the scourge but didn't and instead was trying to build up his power based as to fight the burning legion. That was the point of building the undead army early because people were going to die naturally and in war but that is not going to be much help when the planet has been destroyed. Additionally he became cruel after losing his soul. But overall his core ethic remained which was to do anything needed, which he had ever since the death of Invincible. In fact that is why his song is called Invincible, because that one moment was his defining moment even more so than finding Frostmourne.

Arthas is heavily inspired from the character of King Elias from "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" by Tad Williams. There are several parallels in their character development. I don't want to spoil the book series for anyone who hasn't read them yet otherwise I would have listed them all here.
His overall idea is also a direct anti-parallel to Arthur. Excalibur brought peace, Frostmourne brought ruin, Excalibur was in water, Frostmourne was encased in ice

She's the one who cared for him the most out of all of his victims and she wouldn't be foolish enough to confuse that forgiveness for love. She would forgive him because she's one of the few who had the most to lose due to him and also one of the few who understood him and the forces that were at work in his life to make him into the Lich King. I don't think that she would forgive him easily, as honestly, who could? But I think that she would, especially when you consider that Sylvanas and Uther were some of his more prominent victims.
Yeah, he was the prince, a paladín of light, and it's like he was almost destinied to become a great king one day... Darkness wants to corrupt us all, but it puts special attention and energy in the best of us. Arthas was one of the best, as it is Anduin. There are so much similarities in both of them, both great leaders, great paladins, great men, but both also corrupted, chased, broken by the evil.

The appealing of Arthas is simply that he sacrificed everything for the greater good. He is by definition what a hero looks like, whether you like it or not. Yes this may be a cliché as Nietzsche defined this sort of being as "Über mench" and has been defining like Superman and many other superheroes. Is it over-used story plot? maybe, but the human race seems to forget what a true hero is. A hero never get praised or loved - they suffer alone and die alone as their destiny.
Moreover, not only the fact that he sacrificed everything in desperate attempt to save everyone... HE DID IT alone, THEY ALL LEFT HIm, when every second counted, He did the bravest thing, ALONE, he made an impossible decision, to STAND UP to overwhelming evil, and immediately, not thinking of saving himself, not thinking to use it for his ambition, not thinking to EXPLOIT everythinh, young inexperienced but selfless of them all, left by everyone, even love of his life (though she never stopped loving him), And He decided alone to FIGHT, against ovewhelming universal darkness. How it should have ended in Shadowlands We find Arthas imprisoned by the Jailer siphoning his energy away for his plans putting into endless torment. We are.conflicted cause he deserves it but if we leave him the jailer keep using his power. We get him out and have him atone for his Sins and get forgivness from Uther. In the end he can find peace and pass on wich serves as a mirror to Sylvanas, since she is pretty much in the same position as Arthas was and lost herself. The song alone tells you what kind of king he was supposed to be and what ideals he tried to live up to. Arthas Menethil, in my eyes, is one of the most tragic figures in Warcraft Lore. And I STILL hope that someday someone will pick up his story and turn it into a GOOD TV series. Preferably with Henry Cavill in the leading role!

Wild speculation and wishful thinking on my part for a better finale for Arthas….They could always write it that part of “the war within” is a part of Arthas’ soul is etched into Anduin’s. I thought the way Anduin raised his sword to Thrall in TWW trailer cinematic was exactly how Arthas did in WotLK cinematic when he was raising Sindragosa. It might be a hint at what could be, and with Metzen back creatively, it could be a great way to finish it properly this time.

I started playing Warcraft 3 back when I was 7 years old and He was my favorite chatacter along with Illidan. I was expecting to Arthas to return in the Shadowlands but that was a lie. Since his soul faded away he can't return.

Yeah back then they made cool relatable characters. I started young myself(more like 10 but still). Now they destroyed him they essentially killed a lot of what made the game cool, and also he was most deserving of a redemption arc. Also them destroying his soul doesn't make sense, because if that were possible, why wouldn't all the souls Frostmourne took also be destroyed? But if that were the case he wouldn't have been defeated at the end of Wrath. But you know that it was Blizzard trying to kill of old WoW.

@@osiris8251 i agree, honestly Arthas should've been a character we meet in the maw later on. A character that has survived for years, without being caught. I guess also depending if you killed him or not will change the dialogue. He saves us but only so he can use us in exchange to help us escape. As the expansion we get more and more of his side of the story of what happened with all that has happened leading up to wotlk. It allows him to explain what went on while still not making him into a complete "oh im sorry I want to be totally forgiven". He knows he'll never truly be forgiven, but he doesn't want that, he just wants to find peace with his soul. In his the only way that can ever be done, is if the Jailer dies
@@dabihwow5550 I don't know I think that WoW has been just doing downhill further and further, especially with the Dragonflight DLC. Honestly what I would like to see would be either a complete retcon to a certain point, with players who bought the retconned dlc comped in some manner. Or we bring him back entirely and just have new DLC. Maybe this whole dragonflight stuff gets nuked or turned into undead or something really horrible and old school style, because I don't think that this new kind of Spyro kind of stuff they are doing is working. Also who does new WoW even appeal to?

This is what World of Warcraft means. There was no legend, no legacy, no story behond this one. I loved every single detail of Wrath of the lich king. Call me anything, but I loved its love story of Jaina + Arthas, what he became, and what everything had gone because of the lich king... Such a deep story.
Arthas genuinely is one of the best characters story and design wise. Not many other characters come close besides like, Darth Vader but even he isnt as good as Arthas. Plus Arthas just looks badass in the lich king armor
For me I kinda like his Death Knight era more though.
tbh - i am sure Arthas is heavily inspired by Vader. I mean both are young, powerful leaders. Both had to made very hard decisions and ended on the "dark side" after reaching for more power to safe those they loved.

Fallen paladins were already a thing in D&D, but whoever wrote The major portion of the storyline in Warcraft 3 about the kings’ son, a great paladin and his dark path to power was a genius

4:35 This is honestly one of my favourite leitmotifs for a fictional character. It's like the Imperial March for Darth Vader, Why So Serious for the Joker, or Davy Jones' theme from Pirates of the Caribbean in that it perfectly encapsulates just who he is and sets the tone for every scene he's in and every action he takes.

And that is what killed the game for me. They did such a dirty move there and they literally brought him up just to get some emotion out of us, then just killed him off. Given that Sylvanas said for him to be forgotten I think that was more the company and developers saying that than anything. Given what they turned the game into with Dragonflight everything I loved about the game is gone and I will never come back.

However, given that Sylvanis said for him to go and be forgotten after his soul was destroyed I think that was more of a message from Blizzard and the devs telling us to forget what we liked about WoW.
Blizzard be like "Nah but we'll give you more uber Sylvanas. That's what you want right? RIght?!"
No one cares about retail. The real story ended when Arthas fell.
But I'm glad blizz has a great opportunity to use Caverns of Retcon to do something big now that a ton of old players returned to play wrath classic and then SoD.
If all the lucky stars align, we might get a completely new set of parallel expansions with a new story and less feature bloat. And no in-game store or mtx shit with wow tokens or thousands of e-peen cosmetics, or overall trying to pander to everyone instead of the core fans and ending up disappointing everyone.
They have a billion dollar chance with SoD to start a parallel story.
Arthas’s story is the saddest of them all… his downfall was painfull… and caused so many bad things to happen… the saddest story of a character… 😢

When Shadowlands came out, I was hoping we would see him return and get his redemption arc…and maybe reunite with Jaina. Alas it was not to be. I hope he’s finally at peace at the very least.
What's with this trend of wanting redemption arcs for everyone? Illidan gets one, fucking Sylvanas of all people is getting one now too (and that one especially ticks me off), next thing I know, Gallywix is probably next to get one. It's already a trope, and one that's not executed too well in my opinion, at least with Warcraft specifically.
What's wrong with just letting evil characters just be evil? Not everyone gets a happy ending, and sometimes going for said ending is more of a detriment to a story.

@@salehryan2906 Tell me about it. They lack nuance. He had the chance to kill everyone with the scourge but didn't and instead was trying to build up his power based as to fight the burning legion. That was the point of building the undead army early because people were going to die naturally and in war but that is not going to be much help when the planet has been destroyed. Additionally he became cruel after losing his soul. But overall his core ethic remained which was to do anything needed, which he had ever since the death of Invincible. In fact that is why his song is called Invincible, because that one moment was his defining moment even more so than finding Frostmourne.

Arthas is heavily inspired from the character of King Elias from "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" by Tad Williams. There are several parallels in their character development. I don't want to spoil the book series for anyone who hasn't read them yet otherwise I would have listed them all here.
His overall idea is also a direct anti-parallel to Arthur. Excalibur brought peace, Frostmourne brought ruin, Excalibur was in water, Frostmourne was encased in ice

She's the one who cared for him the most out of all of his victims and she wouldn't be foolish enough to confuse that forgiveness for love. She would forgive him because she's one of the few who had the most to lose due to him and also one of the few who understood him and the forces that were at work in his life to make him into the Lich King. I don't think that she would forgive him easily, as honestly, who could? But I think that she would, especially when you consider that Sylvanas and Uther were some of his more prominent victims.

Darkness wants to corrupt us all, but it puts special attention and energy in the best of us.
Arthas was one of the best, as it is Anduin. There are so much similarities in both of them, both great leaders, great paladins, great men, but both also corrupted, chased, broken by the evil.

Wrath of the Lich King was literally a second Star Wars.
The appealing of Arthas is simply that he sacrificed everything for the greater good. He is by definition what a hero looks like, whether you like it or not. Yes this may be a cliché as Nietzsche defined this sort of being as "Über mench" and has been defining like Superman and many other superheroes.
Is it over-used story plot? maybe, but the human race seems to forget what a true hero is. A hero never get praised or loved - they suffer alone and die alone as their destiny.
Moreover, not only the fact that he sacrificed everything in desperate attempt to save everyone... HE DID IT alone, THEY ALL LEFT HIm, when every second counted, He did the bravest thing, ALONE, he made an impossible decision, to STAND UP to overwhelming evil, and immediately, not thinking of saving himself, not thinking to use it for his ambition, not thinking to EXPLOIT everythinh, young inexperienced but selfless of them all, left by everyone, even love of his life (though she never stopped loving him), And He decided alone to FIGHT, against ovewhelming universal darkness. If this is not the greatest heroism, i don't know what is...

We find Arthas imprisoned by the Jailer siphoning his energy away for his plans putting into endless torment.
We are.conflicted cause he deserves it but if we leave him the jailer keep using his power.

Arthas Menethil, in my eyes, is one of the most tragic figures in Warcraft Lore.
